The best Serie A kits of the 90’s

We all love football kits. There’s something about seeing a certain jersey from a time forgot, and the instant nostalgia it brings along with it – resurfacing memories of the beautiful game that had been pushed to the recesses of your memory to one day be unearthed once more.

During the 1990s, the Italian league was regarded as the best in the world, showcasing the best teams with the best players, and a style of football unknown to the people of England. Channel 4’s broadcasting of Football Italia brought a newfound fandom for Italian clubs from the people of the United Kingdom, seeing the Catenaccio system full flow and in all of its beauty – along with some of the most iconic and eye-catching kits known to man.

When looking back at the Italian kits of this era, you can see the inspiration that they provide even now, and it can be hard to choose your favourites from that time, with so many incredible examples to choose from.

With that being said, here we are going to have a look at some of the best kits from the ’90s in the Serie A, in no particular order of course – given that would be an impossible task to perform. So, without further ado, here are some of the best Serie A kits of the 1990s…

Parma A.C. Home, 1995-97

This was a great one from Parma back in 1995, the club wore this kit until the end of the 1996/97 season. The first campaign with it the club managed their highest ever finish in the Serie A, coming second place and just one point behind Champions Juventus. It was also Carlo Ancelotti’s first season managing the club, and what a great kit it was to do it in.

The manufacturer’s Puma really went for it with this one, and the patterning on the sleeves along with a great sponsor is what sells this one for me – whenever someone says Parma you instantly think of the Parmalat sponsor, as well as the iconic white, yellow, and blue colour pallet. All in all, this was a lovely kit, it’s just a shame Stoichkov couldn’t score more goals in it.

Inter Milan Home, 1992-94

A stand out of the 90s era for kits, not just in Italy but worldwide. The Inter Milan home kit that debuted in 1992, is an absolute masterpiece – the standout feature being the iridescent INTER that you can see faintly across the iconic blue and black stripes.

The gold badge and logo are also a standout feature, as well as a fantastic sponsor in Fiorucci – the collar and button are another nice touches, along with the gold INTER also stitched alongside the button on the said collar. This season saw the club win the UEFA Cup against Casino Salzburg, beating the Austrian club 2-0 on aggregate.

SSC Napoli Home, 1989-90

This iconic Napoli kit was made famous for the man wearing it, Diego Maradona. The 1989-90 season saw the club win their second-ever league title – thanks to the attacking talent of Maradona and Gianfranco Zola, finishing the season on 51 points, two above second-place Milan.

This season saw the Argentinian forward score 16 goals in the league for Napoli, captaining the team to a historic title win. The best thing about this kit is the simplicity – the all-over blue with a fantastic ‘Mars” sponsor, but the collar is one of the standouts, it is simple yet effective, and another key aspect was the choice by the manufacturer Ennerre to swap their logo and the club badge around.

Usually, the club badge is placed on the left side of the kit and the manufacturer logo on the right – another aspect that made this kit unique and different despite the simplicity.

AS Roma Home, 1990-91

Another simple yet effective kit from the Italian manufacturer Ennerre – the AS Roma home kit of 1990-91 was an absolute stunner. Roma home strips have always been recognisable thanks to the deep and rich carmine red along with the subtle golden yellow that is iconic to the club, and this kit was no different.

The club won the Coppa Italia that season with a 4-1 victory over Sampdoria – with most notably Rudi Völler upfront for I Giallorossi, with this fantastic kit showcased along with it. The Barilla sponsor is a classic for Roma and something that many associates with the club – the short sleeve take on the kit is my personal favourite, and the golden yellow pop up collar is something that makes this kit a real classic.

Fiorentina A.C.F. Home, 1998-99

The infamous Batigoal in action for Fiorentina, sporting quite possibly one of the best kits the club has ever had the pleasure of wearing. Fiorentina has a great history with their iconic purple home kit – and the 1998-99 strip followed suit.

The fantastic Nintendo sponsor stands out the most, along with the glistening purple and the white panel detail on the top of the sleeves. The club finished third in the Serie A that season, with Batistuta finishing the campaign on 22 goals and was named the Argentine Player of the Year in the league, as well as finishing 3rd for the World Player of the Year award. An iconic shirt, worn by an iconic player.

Juventus Home, 1992-94

It wouldn’t be an article on the 90s Serie A kits without the inclusion of the Old Lady. This simple yet classic strip was used for the 1992-94 season and is sportingly shown off here by Del Boy in 1993 after joining from Calcio Padova.

The classic black and white stripe are synonymous with the club, but the use of just the two gold stars for the club badge is what made this one a classic, along with the simple green Kappa logo rather than the classic Kappa sleeves that you often see on the manufacturer’s kits over time.

The Danone sponsor is another aspect that sticks to mind as it fits along with the aesthetic of the kit. The club finished 4th in the Serie A during their first season in this kit but saved their season by winning the now Europa League, beating German club Borussia Dortmund 6-1 on aggregate. Roberto Baggio finished the season as the top goalscorer for the club, with 21 goals, despite being played as a trequartista.

U.C. Sampdoria Home, 1990-91

The classic kit was worn by the club during their first and only title-winning season guided by Serbian manager Vujadin Boškov – along with Gianluca Vialli becoming the club’s top goalscorer that season in the league with 19 goals.

The kit was not much different from the season before, with Asics taking over as manufacturer, and placing the iconic ERG sponsor big and bold above the club badge and the iconic white, red, and black stripes that ran around the kit – along with the Italy badge on the top left shoulder.

The kit features a wide v neck collar, a very Italian stylistic approach, along with the lovely shiny bright blue base colour of the kit – overall a timeless classic that Sampdoria has become remembered for. The kit was worn by the iconic Vialli, Mancini, Lombardo, Pagliuca, and Vierchowod during the season that went down in Samp history.

A.C. Milan Home, 1991-92

The 1991-92 season was Fabio Capello’s first in charge of Milan, and the club finished 1st in the Serie A after an incredible unbeaten season that saw start striker Marco van Basten avoid injury to finish the season as the club’s top goalscorer with 25 goals in the league and 29 in all competitions.

The form of the team was no surprise, with defenders such as Franco Baresi, Paolo Maldini, and Alessandro Costacurta and midfielder such as Carlo Ancelotti, Ruud Gullit, and Frank Rijkaard – all of which ran the Serie A that season in this iconic Milan kit.

The classic red and black stripe is simple enough, but along with the classic Adidas badge and great sponsor – as well as the gold star badge and Champions League trophy underneath for European competitions, the kit has became an instant classic, and one of the clubs best in history.

Celtic news: Hoops step up their scouting of gifted playmaker

Last year, Celtic were extremely close to completing the signing of a gifted Motherwell youngster, David Turnbull. Unfortunately, the now 21-year-old playmaker failed his medical exam due to a knee concern, sensationally collapsing the whole deal in the end.

It was seen as a huge blow for both parties and the youngster was devastated. Now, however, according to the latest information from The Scottish Sun, Neil Lennon is stepping up the Hoops’ scouting of Turnbull as his development continues.

Not only that but if his impressive comeback keeps on going, Celtic may very well make a fresh offer for the youngster and bring him to the club in the not so distant future.

Interestingly, Turnbull was exceptional in essentially every single game he played and started so far this season, including an incredible strike in the 2-2 home draw against Livingston. Of course, the Bhoys will face Motherwell and their young playmaker at Parkhead on August 30 and this will be another chance for Lennon to scout the player.

As things currently stand, however, they like what they’re seeing and a year after his dream of playing for Celtic was shattered, Turnbull may very well get his transfer after all.

The source doesn’t exactly say anything about the price or the negotiations that are bound to take place but it does seem like a real possibility further down the line.

Verdict

Turnbull was a great talent last year and he remains a great talent now. Needless to say, Celtic’s interest is not a surprise at all and can only grow as the 21-year-old keeps impressing the right people.

Of course, the clash at Parkhead at the end of the month could very well be his ‘trial’ with the Hoops. If he brings his A-game to the pitch then, there’s every chance Lennon will be ready to pull the trigger.

Tottenham Hotspur: Darren Bent raves over ‘brilliant’ Spurs star as news emerges

Darren Bent insists Tottenham ace Erik Lamela ‘has got a point to prove’ after his ‘brilliant’ performance against Manchester United on Friday.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs striker was impressed by the Argentine’s display at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last week.

The outlet revealed earlier this month that Lamela only has nine games to convince Jose Mourinho he deserves to stay in north London.

He played 70 minutes against the Red Devils before he was replaced by Gedson Fernandes.

Spurs started the game well after Steven Bergwijn scored the opener but Bruno Fernandes levelled the score with a penalty in the latter stages of the game (BBC).

Bent told assistant editor Russell Edge “In terms of standout performer, I thought Lamela was brilliant, I thought he played really, really well.

“Listen, he played really, really well – he got on the ball, was tenacious in the tackle, tried to make things happen, drove with the ball. At times his decision making wasn’t the best but he really impressed me.

“He probably has got a point to prove because as long as he’s at Spurs, I can’t ever see him being one of his main men where you go they’ve got to play him, he’s got to be the first name on the sheet.

“If he keeps putting in performances like he did on Friday, I think that will help and endear himself to the fans more. If he can put in those kind of performances again, he’s someone you can rely on.”

It is hard to argue with the pundit here, as Lamela seized the opportunity with open arms.

As Dele Alli was suspended for the Premier League clash, the 28-year-old stepped up in his absence.

He took 37 touches of the ball, registered 17 out of 27 passes with a passing accuracy rating of 74%, successfully completed 3 out of 4 dribble attempts, and made 2 interceptions (via SofaScore).

These stats don’t really paint the full picture, as he helped to set the tempo early on to unsettle Man United in the first half.

His influence all over the pitch helped Mourinho’s side earn a hard-fought draw with the Red Devils at home.

Spurs are currently eighth in the table, four points behind United, and nine points behind fourth-placed Chelsea.

With all that being said, Mourinho is well aware his budget has been severely slashed ahead of the transfer window, and the club could be forced to sell the  £14.4m-valued star to cover the costs of a squad overhaul.

Tottenham fans, should Daniel Levy sell Erik Lamela in the summer? Let us know down below!

Last summer was Levy’s worst transfer window at Spurs

Daniel Levy has been Tottenham chairman since February 2001 and since then, he’s overseen, orchestrated and administered almost countless incomings and outgoings at the north London club, always remaining a central figure in transfer matters.

And on the most part, it’s hard to dispute with the work he’s done. Tottenham’s recent rise to Champions League finalists is often seen as Mauricio Pochettino’s hard work alone but really, Levy’s been at the epicentre of a transformation that’s taken a whole lot longer.

Come the end of the first season in which Levy was at the helm, Spurs finished 12th. In the time since there have been peaks and troughs (fifth place in 2006/07 followed by 11th the year after, for example) but ultimately, Tottenham have been on a continuously upward trajectory throughout his tenure.

Much of that has indeed owed to Levy’s dealings in the transfer market. His knack for buying young players, selling them on for considerably more and then reinvesting a fraction of the profits has worked a treat time and again.

A true test for any Spurs fan: Can you match these iconic images with the right results?

Levy secured massive markups on the likes of Gareth Bale, Michael Carrick, Luka Modric, Kieran Trippier, Kyle Walker and Dimitar Berbatov, while there have been plenty of incremental gains as well. Benjamin Stamboui was at Spurs for just one season and yet Levy still secured over £2m in profit on him.

But it hasn’t always been smooth sailing and even the best at what they do make mistakes. Many will point to how Levy re-invested the Bale money in summer 2013, when Etienne Capoue, Roberto Soldado, Paulinho, Nacer Chadli, Vlad Chiriches, Erik Lamela and Christian Eriksen were brought in. Only the latter pair went on to any longevity at the club, the other five being little short of absolute flops.

But that summer, Levy at least made a profit of over £11m for Spurs and brought in Eriksen for just under £13m. He’d go on to make over 300 appearances for Tottenham, bagging 69 goals and 89 assists, before being sold this January at an eventual profit. Lamela is still at Spurs as well.

And that’s the case with most of Levy’s windows at Spurs. Whether it’s simply the net spend surplus, like during the two transfer windows in which Tottenham famously signed nobody, or the odd gem amongst an otherwise uninspiring rabble of signings, there is usually always one or two positives to take from Levy’s dealings.

But last summer remains a real exception to that as things stand, and may well go down as his worst ever transfer window at Spurs – not least because he veered so far away from the usual script, without anything of genuine note to show for it so far.

First and foremost, Spurs uncharacteristically produced a negative net spend of over £80m last summer, albeit somewhat justified by the fact they’d gone almost 18 months without signing anyone. But secondly and more important is the worrying lack of value for money within the cohort that arrived.

Of course, time may go on to paint a different picture, but the near £35m spent on youngsters Ryan Sessegnon and Jack Clarke doesn’t look like good business akin to low-cost punts on the likes of Dele Alli or Walker, or even for that matter Kyle Naughton and Lewis Holtby.

Clarke has failed to make any sort of impression on loan at Leeds and QPR already this season, whereas Sessegnon has gone from making eight Premier League goal contributions at Fulham last term to starting just four top flight games for the Lilywhites, despite Tottenham struggling for bodies at left-back for most of the campaign.

But perhaps the even bigger concern is Tanguy Ndombele. Again, Levy broke usual habits by splashing out a huge £54m fee, but the big gamble hasn’t paid off. He’s been left with a club-record signing who’s only been able to make 12 Premier League starts and appears to be completely at odds with his manager. Jose Mourinho has criticised him in public more than once, most recently after hooking him off at half-time against Burnley.

That leaves the loan swoop for Giovani Lo Celso as the only silver lining in Tottenham’s summer, but even that remains somewhat tenuous considering he’d only made three Premier League starts before being signed permanently on January 28th. Really, the first half of the season was just an extended trial, one that actually cost more than £15m in loan fees. Again, hardly fantastic value for money considering they then paid another £27m to acquire him full-time.

No doubt, a lot can change in football very quickly. Clarke and Sessegnon could go on to become key figures at Spurs in the coming years, and Ndombele may well turn out to be a talent worthy of club-record status.

But as things stand, it’s hard to see what Spurs have really gained from last summer’s spending apart from a significant transfer deficit and a number of potential duds, and this was acquired with the added luxury of just reaching a Champions League final – something that should’ve given them extra pulling power in the transfer market.

Last summer has all the makings of being remembered as Levy’s worst window for Spurs.

Arsenal fans hail Gabriel Martinelli after goal-scoring display against West Ham

Well, well, well. Talk about making an introduction. Having shown glimpses of his enormous potential in the Carabao Cup and Europa League, Gabriel Martinelli put the Premier League on notice with a terrific performance on his first start in the competition.

The Brazilian arrived to relatively little fanfare in the summer, but had gotten his Arsenal career off to a flying start with seven goals in his first 13 appearances. He had yet to make the breakthrough into the team that featured in the league however, and fans of the north London side had even been clamouring for him to play from the off against Brighton in mid-week.

They may not have seen that come to fruition, but after his goal-scoring display against West Ham on Monday night, it was well worth the wait. The Brazilian scored to haul his struggling side level, before the Gunners went on to secure an impressive 3-1 victory away from home. And having seen his performance, Arsenal fans flooded to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the teenager.

Some Gunners fans were keen on hailing not just his goal, but his overall work ethic and hunger, with the Brazilian often seen haring after West Ham players in an attempt to win back possession – as per Sofascore, he actually made a team-high three tackles.

Understandably, some Gunners fans were so excited about the 5 foot 11 man that they couldn’t help compare him to some of the north London side’s talented and iconic forwards of yesteryear.

Lofty praise indeed. But in such a difficult season that led to the sacking of Unai Emery just a couple of weeks ago, Martinelli’s performance offered a rare silver lining. And that is something for the Gunners to desperately cling on to.

Meanwhile, Arsenal turning to this man who masterminded a humiliation of Tottenham would be a smart move.

Man Utd fans fuming with reported contract talks for Eric Bailly

Having arrived from Spanish side Villareal in a £30m deal back in the summer of 2016, Eric Bailly has had a wretched run of luck at Manchester United.

The Ivory Coast international has had his Old Trafford career blighted by serious injuries, meaning that he has played just 74 times for the Red Devils since joining. The 25-year-old has been out of action this season with a knee problem suffered against Tottenham in pre-season earlier in the summer, and there is a real question mark over his long-term future at United.

His current contract expires at the end of the campaign, and The Sun now claim Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side will take up an option that will extend Bailly’s deal by an extra year. The report reveals that this is down to ensuring they do not lose the centre-back on a free transfer.

After hearing the update on Bailly’s contract, United fans took to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the situation.

Many supporters of the Manchester side insisted they couldn’t believe the club would be thinking of extending the Ivorian’s deal, and insisted his injury troubles have proven that he wouldn’t be worth it.

Tottenham fans debate whether Danny Rose or Ben Davies should be first choice

Tottenham fans have been discussing who Mauricio Pochettino should pick between Danny Rose and Ben Davies, and it seems that no agreement will be reached.

Much of the discussion has been sparked due to the fact that Davies picked up a fine assist for Wales against Croatia on Sunday, as well as the fact that Danny Rose hasn’t shown his best form in the eight games he has played this season, and was criticised by Three Lions fans for his performance against the Czech Republic on Friday.

The England international played in the 7-2 defeat against Bayern Munich and though Davies came in to replace him for the trip to Brighton a few days later, Spurs still conceded three.

Pochettino, therefore, has a dilemma on his hands and it is not easy for him to find a solution, with the different fan opinions highlighting the fact that both players have flaws in their game.

Having performed well over the international break, though, Davies could be given a chance to impress. His three starts show he is yet to be given a regular run yet this term and Pochettino picking him would please some fans.

However, others would be frustrated at Rose’s exclusion, as the following reactions show.
