Celtic should explore Jordan Larsson deal

Celtic’s transfer window started off in a quiet fashion but now the campaign is underway, they are approaching the market with a sense of ruthlessness.

The Hoops have signed a title-winning goalkeeper in Joe Hart and signed a top-flight’s leading scorer in Kyogo Furuhashi. Now, however, they could welcome the son of a club legend to the club; Jordan Larsson. What’s the word?Speaking to Rekatochklart (via Glasgow Times) this week, former Sweden star Marcus Allback touted Henrik Larsson’s son as the ideal signing for the Hoops in a revealing interview.Jordan currently plays his club football for Spartak Moscow in Russia where he has caught the eye with his goal-scoring antics.Consequently, he earned a place in the Sweden squad for the recent European Championships.Speaking in light of that, Allback commented: “If Jordan Larsson was to sign for Celtic, I know that would be a great signing for both the player and the club.”Allback continued: “Jordan is a great player and has a lot of good qualities that he could bring to the team. He’s not the tallest, but he is strong, his mentality of working hard and always making runs, taking on players and his effort to defend, is something that would suit playing for Celtic.”Better than Henrik?Although the chance of Jordan signing for the Glasgow club has been ruled out in the past, stranger things have certainly happened in football.Valued at £13.5m via Transfermarkt, his price tag would surely be out of the range of Celtic – even if they do sell Odsonne Edouard. However, if the opportunity emerges to sign him, Ange Postecoglou must do everything in his power to lure him to Paradise. After all, this is an offensive player with the world at his feet, an individual capable of dominating defences and taking the opposition to the cleaners.Described as a “great talent” by Allback, he has 25 goals in total for Spartak, 15 of which came during a wonderful 2020/21 campaign in Russia. On top of that, he provided five assists for his teammates while completing two key passes per game.Larsson is yet to score this term but has racked up a jaw-dropping 4.3 key passes per match. In comparison, only Ryan Christie – 4.5 per outing – comes anywhere close to replicating those sorts of numbers this season. What’s most appealing, though, is the idea that he could become better than his father.Henrik will always go down in Celtic history as one of the greats to wear the jersey. The Swedish hero bagged 174 goals in 217 Premiership outings for the club for instance. His son doesn’t find the net with the same regularity but claims have already been made that he’s on the right path to stardom.Speaking in 2016, Henrik Larsson commented: “I have said all along that the only way to deal with people comparing him to me is to become a better player than I was.”“He is already on his way to doing that. Jordan is playing in a higher division than I was at his age and he has already been capped for Sweden – and scored – at under-21 level, again, something that I had not done at his age.”The 24-year-old has since become a prominent player in Europe and is well on his way to becoming a genuine star on the continent.Celtic would be foolish to pass up a transfer as romantic as this if a deal can be arranged.Sadly, that does feel slightly farfetched for now.AND in other news, Alan Nixon issues ten-word Celtic update that’ll surely leave Hoops fans buzzing…

Devi Worrel dies a forgotten man

Devi Worrel, who played for Southern Punjab in the early to mid 1960s, died on August 19

Cricinfo staff07-Oct-2008Devi Worrel, who played for Southern Punjab in the early to mid 1960s, died on August 19. He was 67 and had been in ill health for a number of years.Worrel, a useful opening swing bowler, learnt his cricket under, among others, Lala Amanath, and he earned his nickname, Worell, after bowling the Frank Worrell in the first over of a friendly match for Patiala in the 1950s.He made his debut aged 14 for Patiala in the Ranji Trophy in 1954-55, failing to take a wicket. He had to wait almost seven years for his next first-class outing, this time for Southern Punjab. In six matches for them over five seasons he took 11 wickets, six coming in one innings when he took 6 for 17 against Jammu and Kashmir in 1963-64.After finishing his playing career he went on to coach school and college teams in Chandigarh. In later years he was dogged by ill health, suffering from diabetes and heart problems. He had to have a foot amputated and also had several heart attacks. At the time of his death he was almost penniless.”When I look back today, I feel I would have been better off as a labourer since the game gave me nothing,” he told the Tribune in 2005. “This is the fate of a sportsman in our country. Today, I feel deserted, unwanted and dejected. Looking at my state of affairs I have arrived at the conclusion that it is very important for a cricketer to be born into a rich family. The ordinary man gets nowhere in the game, gets left behind in the race to the top.”I’ll never regain my lost glory but I long for a piece of sky as I stand on the cricket ground. It’s a dream. I wish I can stand again, live to realise it,” he said. “I want this misery to end. I deserve a better end.”

Leeds United eye Sampdoria’s Mikkel Damsgaard

Leeds United are plotting a record-breaking transfer move for Sampdoria star Mikkel Damsgaard.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent weeks have suggested that Marcelo Bielsa’s team are one of the sides interested in signing the Denmark attacker, with Turkish publication Sabah claiming that the Yorkshire club, along with the likes of Barcelona, Juventus and Liverpool, among others, are all interested in landing him too.

And now, according to Il Bianconero (via Sport Witness), Leeds are pushing hard to get him to England this summer, although it will not come cheap.

The report claims that Sampdoria president, Massimo Ferrero, will not sell him unless he gets a good offer, and that’s said to be more than €30m (£26m).

Bielsa will be buzzing

Having splashed out a club-record fee of £26m to land Rodrigo from Valencia last summer, a move for Damsgaard would have to end up being a record-breaking one for Leeds, given Ferrero’s reported stance on the matter.

But, given his performances for both club and country, it would be money well spent.

Dubbed as “magical” by Norwegian football expert Martin Mikkelsen, he also added that the 21-year-old is “dynamic and can go both ways. He is creative but also so mature in his decisions.”

The £26m-rated star has also been hailed as being “phenomenal” by Denmark teammate, Kasper Schmeichel, for his performances at EURO 2020 over the summer – Damsgaard of course struck that superb free-kick in the semi-finals against England.

After hearing about the links to the Dane, former Leeds man Noel Whelan raved about the prospect of him arriving at Elland Road.

He said: “Wow, now he would be a signing. From what I have seen, he is the next big thing coming out of Denmark. Again, we are looking at players who are the right age and of the right profile. Somebody who would compliment what Marcelo Bielsa already has.

“Leeds nowadays are very intense and aggressive in their style of play and fitness plays a huge part. He looks to me as if he could do that as well, which is important because it’s not just about the little flicks. Damsgaard is a very exciting prospect. If we could get that deal over the line it would show just how far we’ve come in the last couple of years.”

With his ability to play all across the front positions, and the fact he’s only 21, Damsgaard appears to be the kind of perfect, versatile signing that Bielsa will love at Elland Road.

Meanwhile, Phil Hay has dropped an exciting Leeds United transfer update…

Notts scrape to victory over Ireland

A round-up from the latest Friends Provident Trophy matches

Cricinfo staff 26-May-2008Midlands DivisionThe game of the day was Nottinghamshire versus Ireland at Trent Bridge by a big margin, given the narrowness of the win – Nottinghamshire triumphing by one run to go top of the table. Ireland may have been the wooden spoons but they were certainly prepared to stir Nottinghamshire, albeit in agonising pursuit of 241. Kevin O’Brien shone with an unbeaten 93, building on Reinhardt Strydom’s 49. Nottinghamshire had their middle order to thank for rescuing them from 22 for 3, with Adam Voges, Samit Patel and Chris Read each making fifties.Warwickshire emerged winners of a game against Leicestershire made lopsided by intermittent – and interfering – rain showers at Oakham. Batting first Warwickshire made 187 for 8 from 49 overs, having lost one over after the players departed the field, then returned, in the 46th over. Leicestershire set off in pursuit but at 19.3 overs, when on 53 for 2, the rain came again, leaving them eight runs short when Duckworth-Lewis was calculated. Having restricted Warwickshire, to lose in such a manner was a big blow for Leicestershire who are still not through: they need a point in their final game on Wednesday.

Norwich set to return Kristoffer Ajer

Celtic’s summer transfer window is likely going to play with your emotions if you’re a fan of the Hoops.

They have already confirmed two new signings but the mass exodus from Paradise is still very much on the cards.

What’s the word?

The likes of Moi Elyounoussi, Diego Laxalt and Jonjoe Kenny have all flown the nest but there is still a large fear that Odsonne Edouard may take his leave too.

However, after a move to Leicester fell through, it looks more likely that Kristoffer Ajer will be the next Hoop to exit.

Ajer has attracted the interest of Newcastle, Bayer Leverkusen and RB Leipzig while Norwich have also been appealed by signing the defender.

Norwich and Leverkusen submitted bids of £10m last month but they were rejected by Celtic, a decision that left the player far from impressed.

A new report from The Sunday Post (via Glasgow Live), suggests that the Canaries are set to return for the Norwegian with a bid that, including add-ons, would eclipse the previous sum of money they offered.

Huge blow

Celtic may be holding out for more than £10m but with just a year left on the centre-back’s contract, they can’t afford to be too picky over his price and destination.

Ajer has acted professionally during his time with the Bhoys and unlike Edouard, he looked as though he wanted to play during the second half of the campaign.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-celtic-news-doig-nketiah-mccann” title= “Read the latest Celtic transfer news!”]

The Frenchman, however, appeared to down tools and looked a shadow of his former self.

Despite talk over his future and a disappointing campaign from a team perspective, Ajer still stood up tall and acted as an example for those around him.

He was a rock at the back, the glue that bonded everything together during one of their worst defensive seasons.

They conceded 16 more league goals than Rangers last term and they could get worse if they allow their best defender to leave.

Unfortunately, the player may have all the power here. He has vented his frustrations at not being allowed to join Norwich and if this saga continues into the season, it’s unlikely his attentions will be fully focused on playing.

They either need to accept that they’re losing him for free next summer or cash in now. Either way, his exit would be a big blow, one that isset to leave fans disgruntled and gutted.

They have witnessed a number of their star players leave over the years with Virgil van Dijk becoming renowned as the best defender in the world after departing Scotland.

For the sake of a measly £10m or so they’ll fetch for Ajer, they’ll be hoping his career turns out slightly differently.

Another injury setback for the Cidermen as Francis breaks a finger

Richard Walsh04-Jul-2002A lot will be expected of the Somerset batsmen when they resume their innings in the morningThe first target for the not out batsmen Mike Burns (51) and Keith Parsons (13)will be 458 to avoid the follow on, but knowing that they will be without the services of paceman Simon Francis for the Surrey second innings they will be hoping for a lot more.Early on this morning Mark Ramprakash brought up his double century, before he was out to Steffan Jones after giving an impressive demonstration of his batting talents, that had spread over four sessions of play.Ricky Clarke and Ed Giddins then took the Surrey score onto 608 for 6 until just before lunchtime, skipper Adam Hollioake called it a day to post a massive challenge to the Somerset batsmen. At the declaration Clarke had made an unbeaten 153, his maiden century in the championship.During the morning Somerset had lost the services of paceman Simon Francis, who damaged a finger fielding a shot from Ricky Clarke off his own bowling. Anx-ray of his injury has revealed that he has broken his finger and will be out for three weeks. In reply the Cidermen’s openers Piran Holloway and Matthew Wood made a superb start and put on 202 for the first wicket, with the Devon youngster scoring the second championship century of his career, before being bowled by Jimmy Ormond for 106.The opening partnership was a new Somerset record against Surrey at the County Ground beating the previous record of 184 that was set in 1925 by Jack MacBryan (109) and Tom Young (71).The diminutive Cornishman Holloway also demonstrated an array of attacking shots to announce his arrival back on the first class scene this season, before he too became another victim of Ormond’s when with the score on 271 he was caught at slip by Hollioake for 77.By the close of play the ever dependable pairing of Mike Burns and Keith Parsons had taken Somerset onto 304 for 3 wickets, but there is still a lot of hard work needed from them on Friday. After the game Kevin Shine told me: “I’m very pleased with the way that things went for us today. We made a great fightback. Going in on a good wicket chasing a big total I’ve seen it all go downhill, but we batted very professionally.”He continued: “Piran Holloway and Matthew Wood set us off really well, and Woody’s century was excellent. He seems to bat better everytime that he goes to the wicket.”Regarding Simon Francis he told me: “He is incredibly unlucky to get an injury. Even this morning he was still beating Mark Ramprakash and was showing his real potential. He is the real thing, and then this happens, we don’t need that kind of luck.”

Fry reveals Toney clauses after Brentford promotion - Exclusive

Peterborough United Director of Football Barry Fry has confirmed that the club are set to receive millions across the next season due to the clauses included in the deal to sell Ivan Toney to Brentford.

The striker was sold last summer for an initial £5m and has gone on to enjoy a terrific campaign with the Bees as they won promotion to the Premier League.

Toney made a total of 45 appearances in the Championship and scored 31 goals, while also laying on 10 assists, and he was on the scoresheet as Brentford beat Swansea City in the play-off final to seal their promotion.

Fry has previously revealed that Posh landed a £1m windfall because of their rise into the top-tier and he has now told The Transfer Tavern that there will be plenty more money filling the Posh’s coffers over the next few months.

Indeed, he has confirmed there is a sell-on clause, meaning Posh will get a percentage of any fee if he does leave this summer, and there are also clauses for Toney scoring goals and playing games for Brentford next season.

Speaking exclusively to TT, he said: “Going on next season we’ve got a sell-on, so if they do sell him we’re laughing.

“If they don’t sell him, we’ve got a lot of money on games, we’ve got a lot of money on goals, we’ve got a lot of money on Brentford retaining their Premier League status so we’re still in clover with Ivan, it’s an ongoing thing that we’ll get more millions so I’m delighted.”
