Can Bangladesh give Mushfiqur a fitting farewell?

Preview of the first T20 between Zimbabwe and Bangladesh in Bulawayo

The Preview by Mohammad Isam10-May-2013Match factsMay 11, 2013
Start time 1330 (1130 GMT)It has gone downhill for Mushfiqur Rahim after the drawn Test series. For the time being, the team has to give him a fine send-off•AFPBig PictureZimbabwe’s last Twenty20 experience at home is a cheery one. In the final of an unofficial three-nation tournament last year, they crushed a South Africa XI by nine wickets. There were several heroes that day for the home side, and as they play their first home T20 international in 18 months, the spirits would still remain high. Bangladesh, meanwhile, are at the opposite end of the cheery scale.Zimbabwe have just clinched the three-match ODI series after coming back from a game down. They have a few more players who have stood up when the chips were down. The Taylors and Masakadzas took a backseat as Vusi Sibanda, Sean Williams and Tendai Chatara grabbed their opportunities to turn in match-winning performances. Zimbabwe would still rely on a strong bowling performance to pull them through, like in the last two ODIs. Chatara complemented Kyle Jarvis and Brian Vitori quite well, using his accuracy and bounce to surprise the visitors.Hamilton Masakadza will be at the forefront of their batting and, with Sibanda also in form, there will be much to look forward to for the Bulawayo crowd that turns up on Saturday afternoon. The same cannot be said about the visitors. After going down in the ODI series, they have lost their leader after he resigned in a fit of rage. Mushfiqur Rahim will still lead the team out but these will be his last matches as captain. For the time being, the team has to give him a fine send-off.Bangladesh, just like Zimbabwe, have been without a win in their last five matches. Remarkably, for a young side with lots of trigger-happy batsmen, Bangladesh admittedly struggle in T20s. It will still be a close contest at the start but the team with more confidence will take this away quickly.Form guideZimbabwe: LLLLL (completed games, most recent results first)
Bangladesh: LLLLLPlayers to watchHamilton Masakadza has six international fifties in this format, and can be explosive during a chase. He recovered from a poor spell in the BPL with a more productive performance in Zimbabwe’s domestic T20 tournament, averaging 44.83 at a strike-rate just under 140.Bangladesh don’t possess too many T20 specialists but Ziaur Rahman is one of them. His big-hitting abilities have not come to the fore so far on this tour but this is a format where he has made a name for himself. With his medium-pace is coming together, he should go into these two matches in a confident frame of mind.Team newsZimbabwe are likely to continue with the combination from the ODI series. However, Elton Chigumbura has been ruled out of the T20 series after suffering a groin strain. Fast bowler Shingi Masakadza or legspinner Tinotenda Mutombodzi may find a place in the playing XI.Zimbabwe (possible): 1 Vusi Sibanda, 2 Hamilton Masakadza, 3 Sikandar Raza, 4 Brendan Taylor (capt & wk), 5 Malcolm Waller, 6 Sean Williams, 7 Shingi Masakadza/Tinotenda Mutombodzi, 8 Prosper Utseya, 9 Kyle Jarvis, 10 Brian Vitori, 11 Tendai ChataraShamsur Rahman will most likely come in, having been around the team since the end of the Test series. He did well in the BPL this year, so he has the runs behind him to stake a claim. The rest of the playing XI could remain the same as the ODI series.Bangladesh (possible): 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Shamsur Rahman, 3 Mohammad Ashraful, 4 Mushfiqur Rahim (capt & wk), 5 Shakib Al Hasan, 6 Nasir Hossain, 7 Mahmudullah, 8 Ziaur Rahman, 9 Abdur Razzak, 10 Shafiul Islam, 11 Robiul IslamPitch and conditionsThe 1:30 pm start will aid both both batting sides because the Queens Sports Club pitch flattens out in the afternoon. There will also be slight movement for the quick bowlers.Stats and trivia Zimbabwe and Bangladesh have played just one T20I in 2006. Bangladesh beat Zimbabwe by 43 runs in that game The Queens Sports Club ground in Bulawayo has never hosted a T20 international Ireland (30) have played more T20 internationals than Bangladesh (28) and Zimbabwe (24) Hamilton Masakadza’s six fifties are the most for any batsman on both sides. Abdur Razzak, with 36, has taken the most wicketsQuotes”It is a format we haven’t played a lot of. But playing at home and winning this series, it gives us some momentum to take forward. We have a few things to work on. But we are going to be up for it.””There are a couple of Zimbabwe guys who also play in the BPL. They know how we will go about the T20s, but we will hopefully bounce back.”

Ryder's absence will be felt – Chand

Delhi Daredevils batsman Unmukt Chand has said the absence of two key overseas players in Kevin Pietersen and Jesse Ryder will increase the responsibility on the rest of the team during the IPL

ESPNcricinfo staff01-Apr-2013Delhi Daredevils batsman Unmukt Chand has said the absence of two key overseas players in Kevin Pietersen and Jesse Ryder will increase the responsibility on the rest of the team during the IPL. Ryder, the New Zealand batsman, was in a coma after he was assaulted outside a bar and has since begun the path to recovery. Pietersen had to withdraw from the tour of New Zealand early due to a knee injury and was ruled out of cricket for up to eight weeks. Daredevils are yet to name their replacements.”Jesse’s incident was unfortunate. We really feel sad about it. His absence would mean additional responsibility. He will be a big miss this time.” Chand said. “We have to rise to the occasion. It probably gives some of us Indian batsmen an opportunity to put our hands up and perform well.”Ryder was hospitalised on Wednesday for a fractured skull and a collapsed lung. Over the next few days he came out of coma and on Sunday was released from the intensive care unit.Chand made his IPL debut for Daredevils in 2011 but didn’t feature regularly over two seasons, having played only four games for them in total. He led India Under-19s to victory in the World Cup last year and featured in four Champions League games in South Africa later in the year. He was in good form in the recently-concluded Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament, smashing back to back centuries for his state team, Delhi. In the Ranji Trophy, he hit 445 runs in eight matches with a century and three fifties.”I have played well in Ranji matches this season. I hope I will be able to retain the form I displayed in Ranji matches,” he said. “I would like to take the confidence and momentum from the couple of hundreds that I scored in [the T20s] in Indore last week. I hope I am able to replicate that in IPL.”While the IPL may not match up to playing for India, it still required players to perform at their best, Chand said: “Even though you are not playing for your country, you have to raise your game to international standards. Being able to play with some of the big names and with everyone watching you, it sure is a big platform.”Chand opened the batting for Delhi in the domestic T20 games, but isn’t sure where he will fit in for Daredevils. “The team management had not told me anything so far. I will bat in whatever position the team management asks me to.”Daredevils play their first game on April 3 against Kolkata Knight Riders – the tournament’s curtain-raiser.

Michael Hogan, the Western Australia fast bowler, will quit Australian cricket after one more season in order to take up a contract with Glamorgan which had been due to start later this year.Hogan, 30, was due to link up with Glamorgan for the last two months of the 2012 English season but will now see out his Warriors contract before switching. Hogan holds a British passport so will not be classed as an overseas player, but regulations mean he has to stop playing Australian domestic cricket.”He has recently announced that he will retire from playing cricket in Australia at the end of March 2013,” a Glamorgan statement said. “He will then join up with his new team-mates ahead of the start of the new season and will play for Glamorgan for a minimum of two seasons.”Hogan has played 27 first-class matches and taken 100 wickets at 28.46 with a best of 6 for 70.

England need quick response to stay in series

The first one-day international was a rude awakening for a young England team and already the talk has begun of ‘here we go again’ when it comes to their one-day record in India

The Preview by Andrew McGlashan16-Oct-2011Match FactsOctober 17, Delhi
Start time 1430 (0900GMT)Alastair Cook was the one England batsman to shine in Hyderabad, while Jonathan Trott continues to provoke debate•AFP

The Big PictureThe first one-day international was a rude awakening for a young England team and already the talk has begun of ‘here we go again’ when it comes to their one-day record in India. The warning signs are certainly there – three years ago India won the first ODI in Rajkot by 158 runs to begin their march to a 5-0 scoreline before the series was curtailed – and it will be a major test of the Alastair Cook-Andy Flower combination to respond to the opening result. A five-match series gives the visitors time to fight back, but that recovery has to start in Delhi otherwise there will be too much daylight between the teams.Back on home soil, with time to move on from the defeats in England, India looked much more like the marauding force that took the World Cup. For Duncan Fletcher (and, to a lesser degree, MS Dhoni) the India team is a long-term project as a rebuilding phase begins and he’ll be heartened by some of the performances. Put coloured clothes on Suresh Raina and he’s a world-beater, R Ashwin is a promising spinner, Umesh Yadav has a bit of pace and the fielding is showing signs of improvement. Then there’s the captain himself. Dhoni is a phenomenal cricketer and not only because of that helicopter shot that keeps depositing balls into the stands. He just keeps on going. Straight after the England tour – which pushed him to the limit – he was leading Chennai Super Kings at the Champions Trophy and now there’s this series. Then West Indies arrive for a full tour before a trip to face Australia down under. He’s had one break this year, but after his struggles on the early part of the England tour, is back to delivering consistently with the bat. However, despite the positive signs for the hosts, this series isn’t yet beyond England. They have shown, time and again, their ability to bounce back from disappointment. This is a team made of stern stuff. But they need to play smart cricket and think on their feet. The fast bowlers didn’t react to Dhoni’s onslaught in Hyderabad, while the middle-order collapse against spin wasn’t a new phenomenon. The batting order continues to vex minds – for, example, where is Jonathan Trott’s best position and should Ian Bell play? – while Samit Patel hasn’t really done enough since his return to the team. Flower has made tough calls in the past, but he has also remained calm under pressure. This situation calls for both traits.Form guide (completed matches, most recent first)
India WLTLL
England LWTWWSpotlightIn the absence of Harbhajan Singh, R Ashwin has become India’s senior spinner in one-day cricket. Tall, able to extract bounce and with a well-disguised carrom ball, he caused England plenty of problems in the opening game. None of the batsmen appeared to be able to pick his variations and were often left waiting to play off the pitch which leaves precious little time to adjust. Harbhajan may well be back before too long, but Ashwin has more than earned an extended run.Kevin Pietersen has insisted he knows the secret to turning around his one-day form and England need him to prove it in Delhi. Shuffled back up to No.3 on Friday with a tough target to chase, he never settled while making 19 and appeared more troubled by the pitch than many. When the ball bounced, or kept low, Pietersen’s reactions made sure everyone knew the ball have done something alarming. Throw in his poor fielding display, where he let through three boundaries, and it was a performance to suggest all is not quite right.Team newsThere is little reason for India to tinker with their side after such a comprehensive performance. The initial squad was selected for the first two matches so it will be interesting to see if any changes are made for later in the series.India (probable): 1 Parthiv Patel, 2 Ajinkya Rahane, 3 Gautam Gambhir, 4 Virat Kohli, 5 Suresh Raina, 6 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 R Ashwin, 9 Praveen Kumar, 10 Vinay Kumar, 11 Umesh YadavEngland tend not to rush into changes after one defeat so the odds favour them giving the same side a chance to make amends for the opening display. However, legspinner Scott Borthwick and seamer Chris Woakes showed form in the warm-ups and are options to strengthen the bowling attack possibly at the expense of Samit Patel.England (probable): 1 Alastair Cook (capt), 2 Craig Kieswetter (wk), 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Kevin Pietersen, 5 Ravi Bopara, 6 Jonny Bairstow, 7 Samit Patel, 8 Tim Bresnan, 9 Graeme Swann, 10 Steven Finn, 11 Jade DernbachPitch and conditionsThe Feroz Shah Kotla stadium regained its international status in time for the World Cup after the ICC suspended the venue following the abandonment of the India-Sri Lanka ODI in December, 2009. The old wicket was a flat track full of runs, and while the new strip is not as lifeless, it is unlikely to give the bowlers much joy.Stats and trivia England have played two ODIs in Delhi (it would have been three but the 2008 match was cancelled) and they have a 1-1 record. In 2006 they lost by 39 runs but in 2002 clung on for two-run victory which kept them alive in a series they would finish sharing. In his last four ODI innings, MS Dhoni has hit 284 runs for just once out which has lifted his average back over 50Quotes”We were outplayed by the Indians on this occasion. They out-fielded us – something that doesn’t often happen to us – and we didn’t deserve to win the game. But one down in a five-match series, we’re going to look to do something about that in Delhi.”
Andy Flower keeps a level head about England’s position”We always kept our heads high and that probably made the difference in this first game. We would like to continue with that attitude.”

I want to bat at No. 4 – Umar Akmal

Umar Akmal has said that he is keen to move up the batting order for Pakistan and will work towards convincing the team management about his promotion

ESPNcricinfo staff04-Jun-2011Pakistan batsman Umar Akmal has said he is keen to move up the batting order and will work towards convincing the team management about his promotion in the national side.”I feel that No. 4 is ideal for me and I am trying to do well lower down the order with a view to maybe being promoted up the batting order,” Akmal, who currently bats at No. 6 both in Tests and ODIs, told . “But I need to win over the captain, coach and management, and convince them that I am responsible enough to bat at No. 4. However, I’m grateful that I am in the team and would bat at whatever position the team requires.”Akmal, who has made 988 runs in 15 Tests, at an average of 36.59, said he was focussing on becoming a better Test batsman. “Test cricket is where I really want to make my name and that format in which I feel I can achieve the most,” he said. “I am still learning the game, but I feel I can definitely make great strides in this format and prove to everyone that I have the skill and temperament to play five-day cricket.”To do this, Akmal is aware he will have to curb his penchant for throwing away solid starts. In the recently-concluded Test series in the West Indies, he got past 30 in all four innings he played, but managed to cross 50 just once making 56.He admitted recklessness has no place in the format. “Test cricket has changed over the years and scoring rates are much quicker, matches are finishing quicker, but that does not mean that a reckless approach is necessary.”My approach will always be positive and if I see a bad ball I will always try to hit it to the boundary, but my main objective is to bat according to the team’s requirement at that time. Nobody feels worse than I do when I play an irresponsible shot. Walking back to the pavilion is hard enough after playing a poor shot, but then having to sit there and thinking about the shot you have just played is really tough, especially when the wicket is a good batting track.”Though he looked to be striking the ball well, Akmal did not make much of a contribution with the bat in the West Indies, apart from the solitary half-century in the Tests. His top score in the limited-overs leg was 41 in the one-off Twenty20 game at Gros Islet. Akmal said he felt the tour could have gone better for him. “I’m not entirely satisfied with my performance in the Caribbean, but then again not totally unhappy with it. It was an average tour but I need to move on and look ahead to the future.”
