Sai Sudharsan, Prasidh Krishna consign MI to big defeat

There was some concern for Titans as Sai Sudharsan left the field clutching his left hamstring after a diving effort, but Shubman Gill later said that it was a cramp

Pujara: Good to see Prasidh developing variations

On a black-soil pitch in Ahmedabad where 180 was expected to be the par score, Gujarat Titans (GT) posted 196 for 8 after being put in. It proved to be 36 too many for Mumbai Indians (MI), who, despite Hardik Pandya’s return after an over-rate ban, were found lacking in all three departments. While it was not a perfect game for GT either, they did most things right, including selecting a slow surface for this game, as their assistant and batting coach Parthiv Patel revealed during an in-game interview. Their main concern seemed to be B Sai Sudharsan leaving the field clutching his left hamstring after a diving effort. But Shubman Gill later said that it was merely cramps.

Gill, Sudharsan maximise the powerplay

Before the start of the season, Gill had said he wanted GT to do as much as possible in the powerplay; they were the slowest side in that phase last season with a run rate of 7.72. Both Gill and Sudharsan did their best to improve that number. Each scored 32 off 18 balls in the first six overs and took the side to 66 for no loss. It was their third-highest powerplay score in the IPL. For Gill and Sudharsan, it was their fifth 50-plus stand in five innings of opening together in T20s.

The calm after the storm

Once the field restrictions were relaxed, MI pulled things back. They conceded only 13 in the next three overs and dismissed Gill. It was a short ball from Hardik and Gill pulled it straight to Naman Dhir at deep square-leg. Hardik has now dismissed Gill four times in 18 balls in T20s while giving away just 11 runs.Jos Buttler ended the boundary drought by hitting Mitchell Santner for a six and a four off successive balls in the tenth over. He hit a boundary in each of the next four overs as well, but Mujeeb Ur Rahman ended his stay on 39.

Fifty for Sudharsan, not much for the others

Sudharsan kept GT going for a while. He brought up his second fifty in as many games, off 33 balls, and took the side to 170 for 3 after 17 overs. But GT collapsed after that. On the last ball of the 18th over, Trent Boult trapped Sudharsan lbw with a yorker, Rahul Tewatia was run out on the first of the 19th, and Sherfane Rutherford holed out to deep extra-cover the following ball. Despite Rashid Khan and Kagiso Rabada hitting a six each, GT could manage only 26 in the last three.Sai Sudharsan goes up, over and behind•BCCI

Siraj strikes twice in powerplay

Coming into this game, Mohammed Siraj had conceded 74 runs off 55 balls to Rohit Sharma in ten T20 innings without ever dismissing him. Rohit looked set to extend that record when he hit Siraj for two fours in the first three balls of the chase. But Siraj finally had his man two balls later with a scrambled-seam delivery. It cut Rohit in half and hit the stumps.Related

Tilak Varma attacked straightaway and hit Rabada for 4, 4, 6 off successive balls in the next over. But Ryan Rickelton was struggling at the other end. In the fifth over, he tried to smash Siraj only to get an inside edge onto his stumps. MI ended the powerplay on 48 for 2.

Suryakumar keeps MI afloat

After that blazing start, Tilak slowed down considerably, but Suryakumar Yadav kept MI in the game. Facing just his second ball, he brought out the shot to hit Siraj over fine leg for a six. Not long after, he meted out the same punishment to Ishant Sharma.R Sai Kishore was not spared either. He beat Suryakumar in flight, but the batter still hit him over extra cover for a six. Suryakumar and Tilak added 62 off 42 balls for the third wicket in which the latter’s contribution was 21 off 22.1:06

Prasidh takes the pace off to take MI down

MI needed 100 from the last nine overs with eight wickets in hand – far from an unachievable task. But the slower balls were gripping in the surface. Hardik had used this ploy in the first innings, and Prasidh Krishna did the same for GT. Introduced in the 12th over, he had Tilak caught at wide long-on with a slower short ball. When Suryakumar tried to counter that tactic with the , he gloved it on to his helmet.Hardik was booed at this very venue in IPL 2024 for having left GT for MI the previous season before coming back. Tonight, when he came out to bat, the crowd chanted his name. But it was not easy for a new batter to score freely. With Hardik struggling and the asking rate climbing, Suryakumar decided to attack Prasidh but holed out to long-off. This, too, was a slower ball. How slow? Just 97.1kph.When Rabada dismissed Hardik in the next over, which went for just four, MI’s hopes were buried. They needed 73 from the last three overs. While Dhir and Santner hit four fours and two sixes between them, the task was virtually insurmountable.

BCCI to set up domestic anti-corruption unit

The BCCI has roped in Ravi Sawani, the former head of the ICC’s anti-corruption and security unit (ACSU), to head their new domestic anti-corruption bureau. India will be the fourth country after Pakistan, Australia and England to have an independent ACU unit.”We want our own ACU unit because at the moment, for tournaments like the IPL, we need to hire people from the ICC and then there is also a lot more domestic cricket played in India,” Rajiv Shukla, the BCCI vice-president, told ESPNcricinfo. “So the BCCI felt we should have our own watchdog.”Sawani moved on to become a consultant at the ICC after retiring as ACSU head last year, but his term comes to an end at the end of May this year. The terms and conditions, the exact nature of his job, the kind of structure the BCCI’s ACU will have and other details are yet to be worked out. It is understood that Sawani would be given complete authority to set up the unit. It is expected that Sawani will hand pick his team and it will probably comprise of very few people. The BCCI, an official pointed out, was only following the rule laid down by the ICC executive board, which made it mandatory that all member boards must have a domestic anti-corruption code of their own. “But to enforce the code, you need an agency to do that. That is what the BCCI are doing now,” the board official said.Sawani was not available for comments but a BCCI official said its ACU would keep a close eye on the exhaustive domestic set-up, which was also in the eye-line of the illegal betting industry and made players “vulnerable”. “We have a large number of domestic tournaments in India that attract an equal number of bets, which are unknown to the outside world. So players are vulnerable in these tournaments.”In addition to their domestic and IPL duties, Sawani and his team will also educate young players at the various BCCI state academies about the anti-corruption code, and largely extend the work done by the ACSU for the international players.Asked specifically about the IPL, whether there was any hint of corruption so far in the league, the BCCI official said nothing of that nature had been established. He said that having an exclusive ACU wing would only tighten the existing cracks in the anti-corruption programme, with the IPL in focus because it “needs more eyes than any other team in the world today”. “It is not that anything wrong is going on [in the IPL], but because the vulnerability is so much,” he said.In the past the BCCI has turned a deaf ear towards putting a security mechanism in place, typified by its response to security in the first two editions of the IPL. In its inaugural year, 2008, the IPL gave the ACSU a very short notice – just about a week – to come on board. When the IPL was played in South Africa the following year, the Indian board did not have ACSU services for the entire tournament, saying the cost of $1.2m charged by the ICC for the services of their ASCU was too high. In the last three years though the ACSU has been given free reign during the IPL, even though some sections of the board were defensive about paying big money to retain them. The BCCI official said that by having its own ACU wing in place, they could now breathe easy. The official said that board president N Srinivasan had been very keen to have a domestic ACU. This new anti-corruption venture, the official said was the “initiative of N Srinivasan” because “India is a too big a country to risk anything”.

Jaffer century ensures draw

Wasim Jaffer returned to form with a comfortable century, which forced Saurashtra to settle for the draw

Nagraj Gollapudi in Rajkot09-Dec-2011
Scorecard
Wasim Jaffer returned to form with a comfortable century, which became the only element of interest in the match on Friday, which Saurashtra had dominated on the previous three days before having to settle for a draw. They earned three valuable points to keep their chances of making the knockout stage still alive. Despite getting only a solitary point Mumbai are well placed, on 17 points and in second spot behind group leaders Karnataka. The early morning chill on Friday was an encouraging sign for the hosts’ new-ball pair of Jaydev Unadkat and Sandip Maniar, Saurashtra’s first-innings’ hero with a five-for. In the second over, Unadkat duly angled a delivery across a helpless Kaustubh Pawar, who could only edge it back to the wicketkeeper. Pawar had managed only eight runs in the first innings and the second time around he could add only five more. His opening partner Sushant Marathe, who had made an eight-ball duck on Wednesday evening, battled for 100 minutes for just one run. Then he played a cross-batted stroke too far from his body to a delivery that moved away from him. It seemed to take a thin edge on its way to wicketkeeper Sagar Jogiyani, who accepted his second offering of the morning. Marathe remained unimpressed with the umpire’s decision, shaking his head in disapproval throughout his walk back to the dressing room.As the sun came out, Jaffer and Suryakumar Yadav played with more assurance to dominate the bowlers. Yadav, who had hit an aggressive century in the first session on Thursday, was more circumspect and took eighteen deliveries to open his account. Jaffer, who hadn’t made even a fifty so far this season, returned to form, playing elegant strokes and lofting the slow bowlers for his trademark straight sixes.Once the match moved to the second session without the fall of any more wickets, it became of academic interest. So much so that Saurashtra bowled only spin after tea and Jaffer helped himself to his first century in twelve months. His last Ranji hundred came in a winning effort, against Gujarat last December which Mumbai won by an innings and 167 runs.

Somerset happy to 'bully' India

Somerset believe they have played an important part in giving England a head start to the Test series against India after being able to “bully” India for three days in Taunton

Somerset believe they have played an important part in giving England a head start to the Test series against India after being able to “bully” the visitors for three days in Taunton. The Indians were never a threat in their lone warm-up match before Lord’s as their bowling was twice taken apart and the batting folded for 224.For most of the contest, once they had lost the toss on a flat pitch, the Indians didn’t appear to have their heart in the game whereas the county side took it very seriously. They were determined to limit the value India could take from the outing, which is why they didn’t enforce the follow-on. Then Peter Trego embarrassed them with a 57-ball 85, which left them looking well short of readiness for the first Test.”I fully understand it’s quite difficult for Test sides to get themselves up for these games, however it’s about practising good habits,” Andy Hurry, the Somerset coach, said. “They are going to come up against a stern test against a side challenging to be No. 1, so they’ll have to lift their game. I’m sure they will, playing at the home of cricket, but it’s been interesting – their approach and how that reflects in the way they performed.”It was important that we gave it our best shot and really put them under the pump. We won the toss on a great batting pitch, dominated the game and started to bully them, which is a great position for England to sit back in their seats and appreciate what we have done for them.”We had an opportunity to build scoreboard pressure, then got our rewards and bowled them out,” he said. “They were looking for the follow-on but we weren’t giving them that. It was an opportunity for us to go in again and reinforce our position before giving them a little dart at the end to try and bowl them out.”Andrew Strauss, preparing for the Test series with a guest appearance, made the most of his time with scores of 78 and an unbeaten 109 to ensure he enters the main contest in good spirits following his lean time against Sri Lanka earlier in the season. Hurry couldn’t praise Strauss highly enough for his short spell with the team and the benefit it brought to the younger players.”It’s been a perfect three days for him,” Hurry said. “We kept the Indians in the field for a number of overs. He looked really busy at the wicket and built his innings. He’s been outstanding to have in the changing room. The boys have thrived on having him around. He’s been a real good egg.”It’s had a huge positive effect on the younger players. Guys who have aspirations of playing for England now understand what the England captain is about. He has an aura about him. [As he] sat in the changing room, the guys were listening to everything he said about batting and the England set-up. It’s been positive from all sides.”

ESPNcricinfo previews the IPL match between Pune Warriors and Deccan Chargers in Navi Mumbai

Start time 2000 (1430 GMT)Can Pune keep their slender hopes alive?•AFPBig PictureKolkata Knight Riders’ loss to Royal Challengers Bangalore has kept Pune Warriors’ wafer-thin chances of making the play-offs alive. They would need a host of results to go in their favour, apart from having to win their three remaining games by big margins to get their net run-rate up. That would seem an uphill task for a side that managed to lose seven consecutive matches earlier this season, but Pune have begun a semblance of a turnaround with two wins on the trot.Pune’s bowling attack has been responsible for these victories, keeping the opposition to modest totals which the batting has had no problems in chasing. Format designed keeping top teams in mind – Ratnakar Shetty

The 2011 World Cup’s format was designed keeping in mind the commercial significance of the top teams making it to the knock-out stages

ESPNcricinfo staff09-Feb-2011

Filling up Indian grounds for non-India games will be tournament director Ratnakar Shetty’s biggest challenge•AFP

The format for the 2011 World Cup was designed to give the top teams the best chance of qualifying for the knockout stage, tournament director Ratnakar Shetty has said.”Economically, we all know that India is the financial powerhouse of cricket,” Shetty said in an interview with . “The exit of India and Pakistan from the 2007 World Cup was a disaster for the tournament. The sponsors, broadcasters, tour operators, West Indies board – all lost a lot of money. The format was changed in such a way that it gives all the top teams a chance to compete. We have gone back to the same format that was used in 1996.”Shetty was satisfied with the improvements at the Wankhede Stadium, one of the four World Cup venues that were running behind schedule. Talking about the Eden Gardens fiasco, he said the BCCI and ICC could not have averted the situation by being more involved. “Unlike in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh where the Boards run the show completely, in India, the BCCI doesn’t run daily cricket. In our case, the stadia are completely managed by the state associations. The ICC has documented the progress of each venue. The BCCI monitored the reports of the venue, but to ensure that the work is completed was the responsibility of the state association.”Apart from security, Shetty identified filling up Indian grounds for non-India matches as the biggest organisational challenge posed by the tournament. “We have directed all the state associations to throw the gates open to the school children to enjoy a good day out. The tickets have been very reasonably priced too. The ICC is running a lot of contests, and free tickets will be issued to the contest winners, so in our capacity we are doing the best to ensure that the stadia will not see empty stands.”Shetty also stressed that the Indian board made a conscious effort to make the Indian grounds more spectator friendly, something that hasn’t been a concern in the past. “To a large extent, the BCCI have taken the spectators for granted, because irrespective of who India plays, the crowds turn up,” he said. “There was a serious discussion in the board to make the stadiums spectator-friendly. We didn’t want to go by just the numbers. Wankhede’s capacity could have been increased, but we have reduced it from 45,000 to 32,000. Similarly the Eden Gardens capacity has been reduced to 65,000. There is more space between the seats.”The toilet facilities, food courts and the media facilities have all been given a massive facelift, so I am sure people will not complain this time. The IPL has brought a lot of female fans to cricket. Female following has tremendously increased, so we have taken all this into account before redeveloping the stadia.”
