Charlton fans respond to Joe Aribo’s Twitter message

[ad_pod ]

Charlton put Rochdale to the sword on Saturday, with goals from Lyle Taylor, Joe Aribo and Krystian Bielik, as well as some fortunate results elsewhere, meaning that the Addicks soared into third place in the standings.

Aribo has been a huge part of Lee Bowyer’s side’s success, chipping in with nine goals and five assists from midfield, and his exploits have seen him even linked with a move to Arsenal – a switch that could easily come to fruition, with the 22-year-old’s contract running out in the summer.

The Londoner’s all-action displays in the middle of the park have won him plenty of admirers at The Valley and elsewhere, clearly, although it could well be his last term in Charlton red if Roland Duchatelet and co don’t put a new deal in front of him as soon as possible.

The indoor football skills in the video below have to be seen to be believed…

The number 17 took to Twitter to express his delight at another great win and a fantastic season overall – a message which the SE7 faithful responded to in their numbers. You can check out the best of the reaction below…

Pundit View: Noel Whelan highlights Leeds’ signing of the summer

[ad_pod ]

Speaking to Football Insider, Noel Whelan has highlighted the one signing Leeds United need to prioritise above all others this summer.

The BBC Radio Leeds pundit has claimed that above any possible moves in the transfer market the Whites must keep Marcelo Bielsa at the club.

What’s been said then?

Amongst all the speculation that the former Marseille boss is set to leave Elland Road Whelan has said that his former club need to tie their manager down.

“If Leeds can get Bielsa to stay for one more season that would be the best signing of the summer.

“The way he goes about his job and gets the best out of the players at his disposal, the attractiveness of the playing style, he leaves no corner unturned.

“His first season was a great effort, no doubt about that and I’m sure he has learned a lot from it that would hold him in good stead if he returns.

“If we can get a deal over the line that is absolutely key. It’s been difficult for the club and Mr Bielsa to make plans because we don’t know what league we’re going to be in next season. Keeping Bielsa will put a lot of the players’ minds at ease.”

Statement of intent

The 44-year-old has never been more right when talking about United.

What the Argentine brings to the team couldn’t be replaced by any potential signing this summer, and therefore keeping him at the club must be Victor Orta and Andrea Radrizzani’s priority.

Tying the 63-year-old down to a new contract amidst interest from Roma, Girona and Celta Vigo would not only benefit them on the pitch next season, but it would act as a statement of intent that could entice new signings to Elland Road.

For Leeds to beat out these European clubs for Bielsa’s signature shows that they are serious about getting back into the Premier League, and perhaps that would encourage other players to join the Yorkshire outfit.

Stat deficit: Naby Keita must stop being dispossessed so much to win Klopp over

[ad_pod ]

Following a difficult spell where he struggled to break into Liverpool’s starting XI on a regular basis, summer arrival Naby Keita is finally beginning to make his mark at Anfield.

The 24-year-old scored his first Premier League and Champions League goals for the club against Southampton and FC Porto respectively earlier this month, and he made the team-sheet for the third successive game in all competitions against Chelsea on Sunday.

The Guinea international may have won the man of the match award against the Portuguese outfit last week, but one stat proves that he still needs to improve a certain area of his game to truly win manager Jurgen Klopp over.

Being dispossessed

It happened on three occasions alone against the Blues at the weekend, according to WhoScored, which matched the tallies of teammates Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane as well as being one fewer than Mohamed Salah.

Of course, those three players should be expected to lose the ball in attacking areas more often given they should be taking opposition defenders on more often, which makes Keita’s number all the more disappointing.

Chelsea fans were giving it large at Anfield on Sunday. Watch their afternoon get slowly ruined in the video below…

As per WhoScored, he has lost the ball on average 1.2 times per game in his 23 Premier League appearances, way above Jordan Henderson, Fabinho and Georginio Wijnaldum, with only Firmino and Salah having an inferior record to him.

What does he need to do?

The former RB Leipzig midfielder is certainly working his way further into Klopp’s starting XI plans at the current time, but if he really wants to nail down a regular spot next term he needs to be better when on the ball.

Yes, the 24-year-old should be taking a few risks from central areas to try and get the likes of Salah, Firmono and Mane away on the attack, but there needs to be a balance and his manager also needs someone he can rely upon to keep the ball.

The stats suggest Keita isn’t doing enough in that respect right now.

The African midfielder has already shown a big improvement in recent months though and appears to have turned his Liverpool career around following a disappointing start, so you wouldn’t bet against him achieving this too.

Leeds fans fuming with Sky Sports after Villa fixture is moved for TV coverage

[ad_pod ]

Leeds fans on Twitter have been furious with Sky Sports after their fixture against Aston Villa was moved for television coverage.

The match which was set to be played on the traditional slot of Saturday at 3pm has now been moved to Sunday at Noon.

Fans are unhappy as the match has now affected some supporters’ weekend plans in terms of travel and work.

The game against Aston Villa is Leeds’ final match at Elland Road this season and there is a possibility that the Yorkshire club could secure promotion to the Premier League that day, sparking wild celebrations.

Leeds fans from all over the country were planning on coming to the game but now the kick-off time has been changed, some will inevitably be forced to alter their arrangements.

Twitter was filled with fans complaining about Sky after the announcement, with many claiming the broadcasting corporation don’t give enough thought to the supporters.

Here’s what Leeds fans had to say on Twitter…

Newcastle: Benitez rumour sounds like an early April Fool prank

Newcastle are still hopeful of getting Rafa Benitez to agree to a new contract at St James’ Park, and once Premier League safety is assured, the process of negotiating an agreement between the two will start properly.

But according to a report in the Newcastle Chronicle, there has been a sudden bout of speculation that the Spaniard may be set to become the next Celtic manager.

Alex Apati, who works for Ladbrokes, says the sudden interest has them “scratching their heads” as to where it has come from.

Rafa has always said that his preference is to stay at St James’ Park, and Magpies fans will be hoping for that outcome too.

But it is up to Mike Ashley to thrash out a deal that is acceptable to both club and manager, and it will likely mean the owner having to agree to a host of demands the Spaniard has requested.

As is usual in these types of negotiation, Rafa will not expect to get everything he is hoping for, but it is a sensible approach to ask for more, and hope your counterpart will meet somewhere in the middle.

The result, of course, is that the manager will get most of what he realistically expected, but as they say — if you don’t buy a ticket, you can’t win the lottery.

Even if the unthinkable were to happen, and no agreement is reached, it would be hard to envisage Benitez going to Celtic.

Yes they are a massive club, with a huge fan-base, but it would hardly be the type of challenge Rafa likes.

Celtic would probably offer him a huge salary, but if that was his motivation, he would have already signed the lucrative new deal Newcastle have already put on the table.

Rafa loves Newcastle, that has never been an issue. But he also has a long-term vision for the club. He knows where it should be. He knows how to get it there.

It is up to Ashley to see that too.

Do you think Rafa would go to Celtic if he cannot agree a new contract, Newcastle fans? Will Ashley convince him to stay? Let us know your thoughts…

Look at him now: Iago Falque at Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur have had a number of players that have come to the club and fail to make a real impact, however, there will not be too many who failed as spectacularly as one man that had a really good start to life as a footballer.

Remember Iago Falque? You would be forgiven if you don’t. He had what can only be described as a forgettable time at Spurs, making just 11 appearances for the club during the three years he was at White Hart Lane – and managing to get on the pitch in the Premier League for just five minutes in 2012 when Andre Villas-Boas was in charge.

Originally signed on a season-long loan from Juventus in 2011, the former Real Madrid and Barcelona youngster was mainly handed his opportunities in the cup competitions, with the Europa League where he clocked up the majority of his appearances.

With the background he had, it would not have been difficult for many at the club to believe he could turn out to be a rather promising acquisition. Hell, it appeared he did enough to convince the Premier League outfit to sign him on a permanent deal in January 2012 for a figure of £900,000 under Harry Redknapp.

And, looking back on his time at Tottenham, Falque has since admitted that it was the wrong choice and chose the ugliest part of the game – although that is something many would have been able to work out for themselves.

“Tottenham was the wrong choice: I looked for the money and not the sporting challenge, I saw the ugliest part of the game,” he told La Gazzetta dello Sport in February 2018.

“I was just a number, zero consideration, but that also made me stronger.”

Falque’s time at Tottenham had been hampered by injuries, whilst he was also competing alongside an emerging star in Gareth Bale at the time as well, which obviously did not help him. But things really had not improved for him up until recently.

He headed to Southampton, Almeria and Rayo Vallecano on loan before sealing a permanent move to Genoa, who then sold him to AS Roma, before joining his current club Torino. And, it would seem the 29-year-old has finally found his feet in Serie A as he has become a key figure for his current club.

Falque has four goals and seven assists to his name this season in his 24 appearances across all competitions, as they look to compete for European football next year.

Tottenham fans, do you remember Falque being one of your players? Or had you completely forgotten about him? Join in with the discussion below by sharing your thoughts with us.

Fulham fans fume at Ranieri’s double substitution

[ad_pod ]

The Fulham fans could not quite believe what head coach Claudio Ranieri did during Friday night’s Premier League clash with West Ham United.

At the interval of the match, with Fulham 2-1 down, Ranieri decided to bring both Jean Michael Seri and Ryan Sessegnon off, with Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa and Lazar Markovic entering the field.

It would be fair to say that the double change did not go down well with the Fulham supporters, with many taking to social media to blast their head coach.

As it transpired, Fulham suffered a 3-1 defeat at the London Stadium, despite taking the lead in the early stages through Ryan Babel, so it’s safe to say the half-time switch-up didn’t work out.

Indeed, goals from Javier Hernandez, Issa Diop and Michail Antonio secured the points for the Hammers, leaving Fulham in 19th position in the table, eight points from safety.

A selection of the Twitter reaction from the struggling club’s fans – in relation to the double substitution at the break – can be seen below:
