Mourinho, Klopp, Guardiola & the Premier League managers that have thrown their players under the bus

The relationship between a manager and his players is often a very complex one

Despite what they might say in the confines of a dressing room, managers will seldom shame their players in the public domain.

Although, that isn't to say that they are totally exempt from criticism in press conferences and interviews, especially when the man in the technical area is at risk of losing his job. The pressure faced by managers can sometimes lead to them airing their dirty laundry in public, but it very rarely ends well as supporters are left to pick sides between players and their boss.

Steven Gerrard made the mistake of replacing fans' favourite Tyrone Mings in the role of captain at Aston Villa whilst simultaneously questioning his mentality. The Villa boss soon restored the England centre-back to his starting XI after his public shaming didn't go down too well with those in the stands.

With that incident fresh in the memory, here are a collection of other scenarios where players have been publicly thrown under the bus by their managers.

GettyDuncan Ferguson & Moise Kean

Duncan Ferguson has taken charge of just five matches in his coaching career, all of which came during two separate stints as caretaker manager at Everton. Although, in that time, he created enough headlines to last a full season.

Perhaps the most iconic memory of his brief managerial career came when he took the Toffees to Old Trafford in December 2019. With Everton 1-0 in front with 20 minutes left, the Scotsman replaced the injured Bernard with highly-rated Moise Kean.

However, the young forward didn't even see out the game as he was brought off for fellow striker Oumar Niasse in the dying minutes. Ferguson tried to play down talk of a fall out following the match but, having ignored Kean after substituting him, it was clear that the caretaker boss was far from impressed.

AdvertisementGettyRoberto Mancini & Carlos Tevez

To say Carlos Tevez was a character during his playing career would be a huge understatement. Before retiring just a couple of months ago, the Argentine was a player capable of single-handedly winning a match whilst equally capable of winding up a whole fan base in the blink of an eye.

His move across Manchester – from United to City in 2009 – understandably raised eyebrows but he didn't let the controversy affect his performances on the pitch. Although, during the 2011-12 season, Tevez and his manager at the time, Roberto Mancini, had an almighty falling out.

Their feud came to a head when City travelled to Munich to face Bayern in the Champions League. With the German giants 2-0 in front, Mancini looked to his bench to bring Tevez into the action but the striker refused to go onto the pitch, having been frustrated at not being included from the start.

After the game, the usually-calm Italian was livid, he said: "For me it’s a bad situation because it is impossible for a player to refuse to play and help the team. He was disappointed that he didn’t play but we play with 11 players. To do that is just impossible."

Mancini then added: "He is finished for me. If I had my way he’d be out of the club.”

GettyThomas Tuchel & Callum Hudson-Odoi

Callum Hudson-Odoi has found regular game time hard to come by at Chelsea despite signing a bumper contract in September 2019. He has struggled to fit into Thomas Tuchel's sytem and has often been played outside of his regular position in one of the two wing-back roles.

However, in February of last year, the Blues boss brought the winger on at half-time for Tammy Abraham with Chelsea a goal behind against Southampton at St Mary's. Despite the visitors equalising through a Mason Mount penalty, Tuchel had seen enough from Hudson-Odoi and replaced him with 15 minutes left of the match.

He didn't mince his words after the game when asked why he made the harsh decision to re-substitute the young forward. He told : "We brought in Hudson, but with Hudson I was not happy with the energy and the attitude in the counter pressing so we decided to take him off again because we demand a lot, we demand 100% and I had the feeling he is not right in the shape where he can help us."

GettyJurgen Klopp & Dejan Lovren

Jurgen Klopp is widely considered one of the coaches with the best man management qualities in world football. So for that reason, it was very out-of-character when he singled Dejan Lovren out for criticism following Liverpool's heavy 4-1 defeat against Tottenham at Wembley in October 2017.

It was far from the Croatian's best game in a Reds shirt and he was culpable for both of the home side's opening goals; missing a header for the first and missing the ball in a similar fashion for the second. While public shame is never the correct way to address a poor performance, Liverpool supporters totally resonated with Klopp's post-match comments.

"It was just really bad, bad, bad defending," said the German. "The second [goal], a counter attack, when the ball passes Lovren it is already too late. If I am involved in this situation on the pitch, then Harry cannot get the ball. It wouldn't happen if I was on the pitch, but I am in the middle of the technical area in trainers."

England hopeful over Brunt for World T20

England remain hopeful that pace bowler Katherine Brunt will be fit for the World T20 after injury forced her out of the current tour of South Africa. She has been included in England’s 15-player squad for the tournament in India which begins on March 15. Brunt flew home from South Africa after suffering a back spasm during the second one-day international in Centurion.Of the players currently on duty in South Africa, Lauren Winfield is the one not to make the final cut for the World T20. Tash Farrant, the 19-year-old left-arm seamer, who was called into the one-day squad following Brunt’s injury, will travel to her first ICC event.

Charlotte Edwards (capt), Tammy Beaumont, Katherine Brunt, Georgia Elwiss, Natasha Farrant, Lydia Greenway, Rebecca Grundy, Jenny Gunn, Danielle Hazell, Amy Jones, Heather Knight, Natalie Sciver, Anya Shrubsole, Sarah Taylor, Danielle Wyatt

Mark Robinson, the head coach, said: “We are all looking forward to testing ourselves against the very best cricketers from across the world and playing the ICC Women’s World Twenty20 in a cricket-mad country.”It will be a great experience for all of the players selected – both those who have had this opportunity before, and for the likes of Tash Farrant, selected for an ICC global event for the first time.”Tash really impressed during England women’s training camp to Sri Lanka before Christmas last year, and adds a different dimension to the bowling attack as a left-arm seamer.”England have reached the final of the previous two World T20s – losing to Australia both times in 2012 and 2014 – and open their campaign in this year’s tournament against Bangladesh on March 17 in Bangalore.

Vettori, Guptill topple Afghanistan

New Zealand bowled Afghanistan out for 186, becoming the first team to dismiss five opposition teams in the World Cup

The Report by Alagappan Muthu07-Mar-2015
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsFive matches. Five teams bowled out. Five victories. New Zealand have been off duty the past week at the World Cup, but their ultra-attacking brand of cricket was as finely tuned as ever. Daniel Vettori made it look even more menacing with a touch of spin and a lot of guile. His 4 for 18 eased him past 300 ODI wickets and left Afghanistan all but out of the World Cup.A target of 187 was not going to be taxing, and it provided opportunity for Martin Guptill to find some touch. A 76-ball 57 included some forceful punches off the back foot and handsome lofts down the ground – both trademarks of the batsman when in full flow. Ross Taylor and Grant Elliott, members of a middle order that had not done much in the tournament so far, too made the most of their time in the middle as the hosts won with 83 balls to spare.Afghanistan’s bowlers were easily handled, especially after Brendon McCullum took the score to 53 in the fifth over, but New Zealand’s were a different story. Trent Boult and Tim Southee had the new ball on a string. As usual. Adam Milne racked his pace up to 150 kph three balls in. Nothing new there. McCullum employed seven catching men when Vettori was on a hat-trick. Yawn. New Zealand have been so intimidating on the field in the World Cup so far that you expected all of that. Afghanistan, having traversed 10,000 kms in the last week, walloped by Australia in Perth and barely surviving a cliff-hanger with Scotland in Dunedin, appeared tired and outclassed. At least until Najibullah Zadran and Samiullah Shenwari used their nervous energy to get a few big hits away and created some breathing space. They came together at 59 for 6 in the 20th over, waited for the swing to fade away, Vettori’s spell to end and the fifth bowler Corey Anderson, to push New Zealand into bowling the most overs they have in an innings in this World Cup.The seventh wicket added 86 runs as Najibullah made a run-a-ball half-century, including a six off Southee that landed on the roof, and Shenwari batted through a nasty blow that left a visible dent on the back of his helmet to make a hard-working 54 off 110. Their application should please Afghanistan as much as the lack of it from the others should displease them.Vettori’s first wicket was a happy accident, although it came off the first ball he bowled. He was sneaked into the attack in the third over to allow Southee and Boult to switch ends and the bonus was Usman Ghani playing down the wrong line to lose his off stump. The delivery, though, was a beauty. Tossed up, drifting with the arm and skidding between bat and pad.But McCullum preferred pace with the new ball. This time Southee and Boult were bowling at the ends that assisted their respective away swingers. Boult heightened his threat by coming round the wicket and his captain encouraged the search for the outside edge by providing two slips and two gullies. But Asghar Stanikzai would feel disappointed that he fell into that trap off a short ball that should have been hammered over Martin Guptill, and not half-heartedly guided into his hands.Vettori returned in the 12th over and squeezed Afghanistan further, not that 35 for 3 needed much work. It was a used pitch at McLean Park. It was dry and expected to play slower than usual. But it didn’t have much turn. Vettori isn’t the kind of bowler who gets the ball to hoop around corners anyway. But Afghanistan’s inexperience meant they kept playing for the ball moving away and were consistently found out. As Nawroz Mangal showed when he was bowled trying to cut an arm ball on off stump.Vettori was nagging, his line barely drifting too far from the stumps, although his pace did flit about between the 80 and the 90kph marks. He dismissed Mohammad Nabi, who was playing his 50th ODI, and Afsar Zazai in successive deliveries to cap off a spell that read 10-4-18-4. It was the first time he’s claimed a four-for since June 2009.McCullum the batsman was smash without substance today, but McCullum the captain might think that a positive – if only in private – considering the middle order got some match practice ahead of the quarter-finals.

Want to brush off India loss – Amla

Hashim Amla has urged South Africa not to overreact after their defeat to India on Sunday and pinned their uncharacteristic blow-out at the MCG on “a few mistakes” from which they could “move on” fast.

Firdose Moonda in Sydney25-Feb-2015Hashim Amla has urged South Africa not to overreact after their defeat to India on Sunday and pinned their uncharacteristic blow-out at the MCG on “a few mistakes” from which they could “move on” fast.”Everybody in the team has played enough to know that you do win and lose games. There can only be one winner and one loser. So, let’s not get too dramatic about it,” Amla said in Sydney, where South Africa are preparing to face West Indies. “We didn’t play good cricket, but we take the knock on the chin. We know we have a few more games in the round-robin phase, and guys have been playing well. So we don’t want to dwell too much on it. But going into the next game we certainly know we’ve got to perform better.”South Africa’s 130-run loss on Sunday was their worst at a World Cup, while batting second, but it is not likely to have a significant impact on whether they qualify for the knockout stages. At worst, it could impact where they finish in the group and who they face in the quarter-finals, but for Amla that does not really matter.”You want to finish as high as possible but if you qualify for the quarter-final, so be it,” Amla said. “If you want to win a World Cup you’re going to need to play the best teams to win it. There’s no trying to avoid anybody.”Instead of focusing on opposition they will face only in three weeks’ time, South Africa are concentrating on the aspect of their game they need to improve now: top-order batting. It’s a concern South Africa seemed unlikely to have, especially with the likes of Amla and AB de Villiers in their ranks, and one they tried to brush off as nothing serious after the showing against Zimbabwe. In the aftermath of that game, where they thundered to 339 after being reduced to 83 for 4, de Villiers was right to defend his frontmen. He reminded critics that the top four were precisely the reason South Africa had won matches in the past and if the sometimes soft middle order had hardened up enough to make up for it when they didn’t, there was actually a lot to be pleased about. All that was reversed against India, when South Africa recovered from a stumbling start but were then shot out for under 200 and lost 7 for 44 along the way. Amla called it a one-off.”We didn’t manage to string enough big partnerships closely together and we lost wickets at key times. Things like that happen,” he said. “You don’t want it to happen, and fortunately over the last few years it hasn’t happened to us too often – getting bowled out for 150 or 160. We just want to brush it off, take the knock on our chin, and get our heads up for the next game.”That change will have to stem from the top, where the partnership between Amla and de Kock is yet to show what it is capable of. In 32 innings together, Amla and de Kock have scored 1551 runs at an average of 48.46; at the World Cup, they have managed just 10 and 12 with de Kock appearing out of touch and Amla fumbling instead of playing fluently. Both problems, Amla hopes, are temporary.”I’d love to score runs every game but I don’t think it’s possible. It’s been a slow start and hopefully it gets better. I’m feeling good. Everybody goes through a few games in which they don’t score runs,” he said. “Quinny is striking the ball really well. On any given day, he can kick into first, second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth gear. Although he hasn’t got many runs I don’t think anybody in the team is too concerned with him not getting enough batting time because he does hit a lot of balls in the nets and he does put a lot of care into his batting.’Since his comeback from an ankle ligament tear, which was expected to keep him out for up to three months and two games of the World Cup but healed in a month, de Kock has only had one score over 20 in seven innings. That came in a warm-up game against Sri Lanka in Christchurch, when he made 66, and Shaun Pollock believes de Kock could still be working through the lack of match time in his own mind.”Quinton would have loved to have a nice series against West Indies before coming to the World Cup. He is probably a bit short on match time. It’s more from a mental perspective because technically we know what he can do,” Pollock said. “It’s about trying to get into the rhythm.”Luckily for de Kock, and for South Africa, there is still some time to do that. “The round-robin phase does allow you, if you do have a hiccup like we did on Sunday, some time to get back and align everything in the right way,” Amla said. “But it’s still early in the competition.” So, as they say in Australia, for Amla there are “no big dramas at the moment.”

Rehman back at Somerset for 2015

Abdur Rehman will return to Somerset as their overseas player in 2015, the club have announced

ESPNcricinfo staff07-Nov-2014

Pakistan spinner Abdur Rehman is expected to be available to play a full season with Somerset in 2015•AFP

Abdur Rehman will return to Somerset as their overseas player in 2015. The Pakistan spinner enjoyed a successful spell with Somerset in 2012 – as well as picking up a 12-week ban for smoking cannabis – and becomes the club’s first signing since Matthew Maynard was appointed as director of cricket in September.Slow left-armer Rehman has taken 99 Test wickets but was not involved in Pakistan’s most recent series, the 2-0 win over Australia in which spinners Zulfiqar Babar and Yasir Shah played starring roles. Rehman’s last ODI, in March, saw him removed from the attack for bowling three illegal full tosses but if his international career is now at an end it will be to the benefit of Somerset, who have signed him for a full season, an increasingly rare luxury for counties.”I am very happy to be going back to play for Somerset,” Rehman said. “I hugely enjoyed my time at the County Ground two years ago and I look forward to playing for the county again for the whole of this coming season.”Rehman, 34, took 27 wickets at 14.18 in four Championship matches in 2012, including a career-best 9 for 65 against Worcestershire, and was due to return the following season before being called up by Pakistan. As well as bringing the experience of an 17-year playing career, he will be able to tutor Somerset’s two young left-arm spinners, Ireland international George Dockrell and Jack Leach, both of whom recently signed new contracts.Having topped the Championship table at the halfway stage of the 2014 season, Somerset subsided to finish sixth and made the decision to part company with Dave Nosworthy as director of cricket. Of their 16 matches, Somerset drew 10 – the most in either division – and Maynard hopes that Rehman will add bite to the attack and help break down opponents, particularly at batsmen-friendly Taunton.”Abdur Rehman is a really good signing for us,” Maynard said. “He is a quality spin bowler and will hopefully help us to turn some of those draws into victories. Abdur will be coming back into an environment he is familiar with and playing alongside team-mates who he knows from the time he spent here a few years ago. He is also a more than useful lower order batsman, a terrier in the field and is available in all three formats all season. He’s a quality all-round cricketer for us to sign.”

Zimbabwe victory still possible – Raza

Taking eight wickets in two sessions and seeing out the last 24 overs of the second day would have been pleasing for Zimbabwe. After losing an early wicket, the unbeaten batsmen, Hamilton Masakadza and Sikandar Raza, dominated the Bangladesh bowlers towards the end. But the bottom line remains that Zimbabwe are 390 runs behind Bangladesh’s 503.Raza knows it all too well and is prepared to dig in deep in the third morning. How to go about this job has been shown by the Bangladesh batsmen, who have demonstrated an overall consistency in the last couple of weeks. Raza remains hopeful of a massive turnaround in the game, as every Zimbabwe player should, but Bangladesh have only lost one Test match after scoring more than 500 runs in the first innings.”I do see a result in this game,” Raza said. “It has to go our way. We are definitely playing as though we want to win this game. For that to happen we have to bat out of our socks. Hopefully as the days go on and the ball starts to creep low then you never know. Coming into today, they were 303 for two. No one would have thought they would have been 500-odd all out. Having said that, the last partnership had 50-odd runs on the board so if you take that away it could have been 460. We will keep believing.”I think Bangladesh were hoping for a few more wickets then they had. We will definitely take the confidence from 113 for one. We will take the last session as well. We have toiled hard under the sun and I think the correct way has been shown to us by Bangladesh. They have done it so consistently. To me it is just a matter of time to start clicking, hopefully we can take the momentum ahead in the next day and the day after.”

‘We have to be patient’ – Rubel

Rubel Hossain enjoyed hitting four sixes on the second afternoon but is aware of the hard work that lies ahead as a bowler.
The Chittagong wicket is arguably Bangladesh’s most batting-friendly wicket, evident in the 19 draws out of 43 first-class matches. The last two Tests here have been high-scoring draws, with Kumar Sangakkara scoring 319 and 105 in February.
“Batting is fun,” Rubel said. “It was the last wicket so I played a few shots. I timed the ball well, so I felt really good. Never thought I could bat like that though. It was a good wicket so it worked.
“Our target was to make a big score and play until the tea break. The wicket is very good for batting. There wasn’t much swing or turn. Maybe we can understand on the third or fourth day how much it will break. Tomorrow morning, if we can take early wickets, then maybe we can have some control. The main thing is that we have to be patient here. Getting wickets will be tough, so we have to be patient.”
It is still too early to be negative in a Test match, especially having made 503 runs. Bangladesh remain on course as the only trouble they faced was in the last 24 overs of the day.

Raza hit all his boundaries in the second session in front of the wicket. He drove through the covers at the start of his innings against Shafiul Islam and pulled Rubel Hossain quite easily. However what would please him was his proper use of his feet. He charged Taijul Islam and Shakib Al Hasan at every opportunity, and even when it didn’t come off, he could at least get the ball away as he had thrown his body behind the it.On the third day, he said he will have to bat with more savvy about the pitch and bowling as he expects the ball to start keeping low.”There as a basic plan but the thing is there are things I work hard in the nets when it comes to the game. You don’t really say anything to yourself, you just see and play accordingly. On a track that I thought wasn’t turning, using my feet is part of the plan. The plan will be to see ball and hit ball. I don’t think anything needs to change for tomorrow. My instincts will be slightly to bat smarter, and take where it can take me.”As the sun beats down on the surface, and as the players run on the tracks there will definitely be [breaking in the pitch]. There already are a few cracks and some are actually creeping low and some are bouncing low. I expect it to play slightly differently tomorrow.”
