Sunderland handed Dion Sanderson boost

Sunderland have been handed a boost in their quest to sign Dion Sanderson permanently this summer, following an update regarding his future.

The Lowdown: Sanderson impresses for Sunderland

The 21-year-old spent last season on loan at the Stadium of Light from Wolves, catching the eye as the Black Cats reached the League One playoffs.

Sanderson made 26 appearances in the league overall, slotting into the defence impressively and being lauded by the fans for the impact he made, with supporters revealing their ‘love’ for the youngster and asking to sign him permanently.

The Latest: Black Cat given boost

Those fans will be delighted now, as Sunderland are thought to be keen on signing Sanderson permanently this summer and a positive update has emerged this weekend.

According to Yorkshire Live, talks over a Sanderson move to Huddersfield Town aren’t as far along as some have claimed, acting as a boost to the Black Cats.

The report names Sunderland as one of many clubs chasing a deal, revealing that the Terriers are now unlikely to be part of that competition, which is a boost for those still hoping to secure his signature.

The Verdict: Sign him permanently

Sanderson did enough during his loan spell to suggest he should be signed permanently ahead of next season, especially considering Wolves appear happy to cash in.

At 21, he is a player with a bright future who should only improve in the coming years, with an average of 2.7 clearances per game in the league last season outlining his defensive ability.

Lee Johnson will be keen for new signings in the summer transfer window, in order for another promotion push to materialise, and signing Sanderson would be ideal – he knows the club, has proven his mettle and his arrival would excite the fans.

In other news, one Sunderland player has reportedly been offered an exit route out of the club. Find out who it is here.

Leicester City linked with Jonas Hofmann

Leicester City’s transfer plans have been dealt a big blow ahead of the upcoming window as Borussia Monchengladbach name their price for Jonas Hofmann.

What’s the story?

The German outfit’s sporting director Max Eberl has been discussing the much sought-after 28-year-old and revealed that a summer exit is on the cards, but only at €40m (£34.5m) or more.

“We live in a time when you can’t rule anything out,” Eberl told Bild am Sonntag (via bulinews.com).

“We certainly don’t want to sell Jonas. But if at some point a club is offering 40 million euros for Jonas, we can’t say we’re not interested.”

Rodgers will be gutted

Previous reports have claimed that Hofmann would be available for around £14m over the coming months, so to hear that his actual price tag is around £20m more than previously expected will surely leave Brendan Rodgers feeling gutted.

It’s believed that the former Liverpool and Celtic boss wants to strengthen out wide to add cover for Harvey Barnes ahead of next season. A serious knee injury cut the England international’s campaign short in 2020/21, and the lack of natural replacements saw Ricardo Pereira and Ayoze Perez playing out of position in the final weeks of the season.

However, with two years left to run on his contract, an abundance of potential suitors, and Gladbach in no desperate need to sell, it appears that Hofman will only be departing the Bundesliga side for a premium price.

The Germany international was one of the club’s standout performers in the 2020/21 campaign, bagging eight goals and providing an impressive 13 assists in all competitions, but it’s not the first time he’s caught the eye.

“He’s been one of our outstanding players, one of the winners of the season. He’s been playing brilliantly,” said former Gladbach coach Dieter Hecking back in 2019

Continental giants such as Chelsea, Atletico Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur are also credited with an interest in Hofmann, further reducing the Foxes’ chances of securing the 28-year-old.

If Rodgers wants his Leicester side to finally break into the Premier League’s top four next term, then it looks like he may have to do so without one of his main transfer targets.

Spurs hold further Martinez talks

According to a report by Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur have now held three rounds of talks with Roberto Martinez and more in recent days as the club ‘close in’ on appointing a new manager.

The Lowdown: Spurs hold ‘extensive’ Martinez discussions

Recent reports by the same outlet indicated that ‘extensive discussions’ have been held with the 47-year-old who has been shortlisted by Tottenham for the role.

They also emphatically claimed that the Spaniard has been making a ‘huge play’ for the job behind closed doors and is very keen on succeeding former boss Jose Mourinho.

The Latest: Further talks emerge…

Bringing an update on this story, Football Insider now believe that further negotiations have been held in recent days which brings the total to three rounds of Spurs discussions with Martinez.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/all-things-spurry/” title=”Spurs news and gossip!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The first two came before the 2020/2021 Premier League season ended last weekend, meanwhile the third round of talks have come only in the last few days.

Football Insider also say that the Lilywhites also closing in on a new manager with Martinez shortlisted.

Indeed, in an encouraging claim, the outlet believe that Tottenham are ‘confident’ of appointing a new manager this week and in a matter of days.

The Verdict: Mixed bag…

While it is fantastic news that Spurs are allegedly close to an appointment behind the scenes, Spurs fans may be hoping that man isn’t Martinez despite former Scotland boss Alex McLeish lauding him as ‘world class’ recently (Football Insider).

Reports have now emerged that former fan favourite Mauricio Pochettino has held talks with Spurs and is apparently eager to make a return to the north London club (The Athletic).

Depending on the validity of these claims, with conflicting reports also emerging, we believe that the Argentine would be a far superior candidate to Martinez given everything he achieved at Tottenham in his first spell – including a Champions League final appearance.

However, if Spurs want to appoint him, they will apparently have to fight tooth and nail given PSG’s alleged stance.

Leeds must land West Brom’s Matheus Pereira

Leeds United could land an exciting summer signing in West Brom’s Matheus Pereira amid Jon Newsome’s transfer verdict.

What’s the story?

The Daily Express claimed that Marcelo Bielsa’s side are one of the teams interested in signing the Baggies ace his summer, and that they are set to face significant competition from the likes of RB Leipzig and Leicester.

And now, Newsome has suggested that he could see the £17m-rated Pereira fit in well at Elland Road, and dropping into that number ten role just behind Patrick Bamford up front.

Speaking exclusively to FFC, he said: “I think one of the roles, I wouldn’t say they struggle with, but that 10, in behind Patrick Bamford, that No.10 role.

“Tyler Roberts has played it for predominantly most of the season and, although he’s had a decent season, he’s still not got off the mark in terms of scoring goals. I can see him (Pereira) dropping in there. That is an area that I think the club will be looking at.”

Exciting signing for Bielsa

Hailed as a “genius” who “who has a technical ability that I have never seen before” by former Nurnberg coach Nate Weiss, the 25-year-old Pereira has been one of West Brom’s standout performers this season in the Premier League despite the Baggies’ relegation.

He’s scored 11 goals and provided a further six assists in the league alone, and has done his best in recent weeks to almost single-handedly drag West Brom away from the drop – his last eight games in the competition have seen him score six times and set up another three.

Another former Leeds man in Noel Whelan has backed Leeds to make a swoop for the winger, saying: “It is a mouth-watering prospect. We missed out on certain players last season, and this is a player that excites everybody. I would definitely take him all day long.

“He’s a fantastic player, he’s great on the ball, he can turn people inside out. Pereira’s another option we can use right across that front three and maybe in a number 10 role as well. He’s the right age and he’s the sort of player we should be looking at. Imagine, if you put him alongside Raphinha, Rodrigo, Harrison etc, that’s pretty formidable.”

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Leeds transfer rumours and news!”]

It’s exactly why Victor Orta could help complete a “mouth-watering” attack for Bielsa’s Leeds by signing the 25-year-old. He could well be the final jigsaw piece to finish off the Whites manager’s dream attack as Whelan says.

Meanwhile, Leeds are eyeing a move for this Bundesliga sensation…

Howey urges NUFC to stick with Bruce

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, Steve Howey, who made 157 appearances for Newcastle United, has urged the Magpies to appoint an English manager if Steve Bruce leaves this summer.

Bruce was on talkSPORT earlier this week and he claimed that his future is for other people to decide and not himself, as speculation grows whether or not he will remain in the dugout at St James’ Park next season.

This comes after reports earlier in the year that Mike Ashley would be offering Bruce a new contract at the end of the season if he managed to keep Newcastle in the Premier League, which he has managed to do.

Speaking on why he would like Newcastle to appoint another English manager after Bruce and how there are a lot of good managers in this country, Howey exclusively told FFC:

“I think we’ve got some very good managers in this country but for some reason we always want to go foreign, and there are some very good foreign managers don’t get me wrong, but it puzzles me.

“For some reason clubs always want to go foreign first, and that’s their prerogative, but I would always look at home first.”

Bruce appeared to be in danger of losing his job after Newcastle’s 3-0 defeat away to Brighton earlier this season with even some players thinking he was about to be sacked, but he stayed in the hot-seat and has turned the club away from relegation.

A name that has been linked with taking over from Bruce if he was to depart this summer is Gennaro Gattuso, who has recently managed AC Milan and is currently in charge at Napoli.

Spurs must seal Rodgers and Andersen

Tottenham Hotspur may be without a permanent manager right now, but it seems full steam ahead of their summer transfer plans…

What’s the word?

According to the Telegraph’s Mike McGrath, Spurs are in pole position to sign Joachim Andersen following Fulham’s relegation to the Championship.

The 24-year-old is due to return to his parent club Lyon at the end of the season before he is likely to be sold in the region of £20m, though Daniel Levy is facing stiff competition from arch-rivals Arsenal.

However, Spurs do seem like a plausible destination for the Danish centre-back. Eurosport’s Dean Jones added fuel to the fire with his comments on a recent episode of the ‘Touchline Talk’ podcast.

“To be honest, I think Arsenal face a battle to get him. From what I’ve heard, Tottenham are definitely in pole position to get him,” he said.

“They’ve monitored him for quite a long time. At least three years he’s been on their radar and they’ve been considering a move for him. I think, from what I’ve been told, his performances at Fulham have just convinced them that this is the guy they need to go for.”

Imagine him and Rodgers

It is no secret that Spurs are looking to bolster their backline, irrespective of who takes over from Jose Mourinho.

As per the ever-reliable Alasdair Gold at football.london, the North London side are looking for a new central defensive leader to spearhead their back four after a clear lack of cohesion and leadership throughout the season.

He would also ideally be one of two new specific additions to that role.

Andersen is certainly an interesting candidate but he will need the right manager to help continue his impressive progression in the English top-flight.

Of course, his current manager Scott Parker has huge claims in this regard and according to Football Insider, the 40-year-old will have talks with the club in the coming days.

However, fellow managerial target Brendan Rodgers, who Spurs have not given up hope of securing just yet, would be absolutely ideal given his proven track record in developing young players.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast in March, Dean Windass claimed the 48-year-old is “unbelievable” for his transformation of zero-to-hero striker Kelechi Iheanacho.

Players like James Maddison, James Justin, Wesley Fofana and Harvey Barnes are several other examples of his fine work in recent times.

Andersen appears to be a more commanding and reliable defender than any of Spurs’ current options, managing more aerial duels won (3.2) and interceptions made (1.4) per game, via WhoScored.

This season, the Cottagers loanee has been lauded as “absolutely sensational” and “magnificent” whilst ‘The 2 Robbies’ podcast gave a glowing verdict over his leadership qualities, especially as he’s still young for a centre-back.

“He’s 24 years of age – he’s a man back there. He can win it, he can play, looks like he’s got a little bit about him to organise those in and around him,” he said,” claimed ex-Wimbledon star Robbie Earle.

Pairing up Rodgers and Andersen this summer would certainly be a massive statement to the rest of the league, and one that would kickstart an exciting new era at the club.

Levy must swoop for both at all costs.

Alan Nixon drops Derby takeover update

Mel Morris is in talks with a number of interested parties regarding the sale of Derby County.

What’s the latest?

That’s according to The Sun journalist Alan Nixon, who claimed in a recent post on Twitter that there are a number of live bidders for the Rams, while also suggesting that the club’s impending points deduction may not be as bad as first feared – if new owners are in place upon Derby’s appeal.

Nixon said: “Derby County. Live bidders plural. Top insiders also hinting that points penalty could be less on appeal if new ownership in place down the line.”

Fans will be buzzing

Considering just how much their club has been through this season, having to endure the heartbreak of two failed takeover attempts and seeing their side barely scrape Championship survival after a number of catastrophic performances on the pitch, Nixon’s latest update provides Derby fans with a figurative light at the end of the tunnel.

With Morris appearing to be absolutely desperate to sell the club, the Rams cannot truly begin to move forward under Wayne Rooney with an owner who is not committed, either financially or emotionally.

Furthermore, with Nixon claiming that Derby’s pending points deduction for breaking the EFL’s Financial Fair Play rules will likely be reduced on appeal after the change of owners, there is even more incentive for a sale of the club to be completed as rapidly as possible.

And, it goes without saying that the chances of the Rams’ sale actually going through are dramatically increased by more than one interested party bidding for the club.

As such, the journalist’s update is something that is likely to leave fans of the club buzzing, as once their side have sorted matters off the pitch out, they can begin to plan for next season under Rooney, with the aim of putting on a much more respectable showing in the Championship than last time out.

– O Barrios é a nossa referência.
