Three things we learned from England’s 2-0 win over Malta

With all the press surrounding Gareth Southgate taking charge of England following Big Sam’s dismissal, the ex-Middlesbrough manager’s first game at the helm almost became a sideshow.

Southgate’s debut as manager of the national team started with a comfortable 2-0 win against Malta, thanks to goals from Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge and Tottenham’s Dele Alli.

With England facing a side ranked 167th in the world, there was less emphasis on the victory – which was seen as almost a formality – and more on Southgate’s team selection and the form of one player in particular.

Fans and pundits alike were keen to see how captain Wayne Rooney would be used having struggled for form this season, resulting in Jose Mourinho dropping him for Manchester United.

Before the game, Southgate called for a “brave” performance from an England side and claimed they would have the freedom to play exciting football.

So which players delivered? Football FanCast looks at three things we learned from England 2-0 Malta.

ROONEY DOESN’T SUIT DEEP ROLE, BUT HENDERSON DOES

Southgate sprang a bit of surprise in his team selection, keeping faith in his captain but moving him into a deeper role next to Jordan Henderson.

Rooney didn’t particularly impress, tending to play his “Hollywood balls” to the full-backs rather than the killer passes his manager would hope for.

He also lost possession more times (25) than he gained it (14), a stat which doesn’t make kind reading for a player charged with retaining the ball.

Henderson looked a lot more comfortable on the other hand – moving the ball nicely and playing some dangerous crosses – and laid on the first goal for his Liverpool teammate.

ALLI COULD BE ENGLAND’S NEW NUMBER TEN

After a stunning breakout season and productive start to this campaign, many people wanted to see the Tottenham midfielder in his strongest position – behind the striker.

Southgate gave him his chance and he didn’t disappoint, grabbing the second goal and proving a constant threat to the Maltese defence throughout.

The 20-year-old managed three shots on target and provided a constant surging presence throughout the middle to cap a promising display.

A few more performances like that and Alli will end up taking the number ten shirt from Wayne Rooney.

RASHFORD NEEDS TO START UP FRONT ON TUESDAY

With three premier league goals this season and a hat-trick on his under-21 debut against Norway, a number of England fans were clamouring for Marcus Rashford to start.

The 18-year-old had to settle for a place on the bench, however, as Southgate opted to start Daniel Sturridge. Rashford did come on for Theo Walcott in the 68th minute but was ineffective out wide.

While Sturridge took his goal well, he should have added more, having blazed the easiest of his five more chances to score over the bar.

If Southgate is going to play Rashford, it needs to be through the middle where he can finish chances rather than create them.

Comandado porCarlos Sánchez, o time do Santos teve oportunidades com o próprio uruguaio, Pituca e Soteldo.

Tricolor volta melhor

Renato leva a melhor

O camisa 11 tocou rasteiro, no canto.

Bahia oficializa empréstimo do zagueiro Marllon

Nottinghamshire face nervous wait over pitch

ScorecardPeter Siddle claimed three scalps as wickets continued to tumble on a spicy surface•Getty Images

This match is in the balance, with Nottinghamshire needing 174 runs to win with seven wickets standing on a pitch that has been unpredictable, even in a generous assessment. Whatever the outcome, the home county will be face a nervous time at the close, when a pitch panel convened by the ECB will meet to determine whether action is taken after 33 wickets fell during the first two days.Nottinghamshire, of course, are at risk of a points penalty if the surface is judged to be of less than a reasonable standard. That could range from eight points if the panel concludes that its position is poor, to 24 points if it is considered to be unfit. They may escape unscathed. There will be a debate to follow, either way, over the alteration to the Laws that allows the home captain to decide if the heavy roller is available for use, by either side, during the course of the game. Nottinghamshire may not have helped themselves in this instance by deciding it is not available, the consequence of which is that dents to the surface caused by the ball can remain a factor for longer than previously, leading potentially to uneven bounce and unpredictable sideways movement.Nonetheless, the state of the surface remains their responsibility and the panel may ask why Nottinghamshire, who tend to prepare ‘result’ wickets without apology, chose to use a pitch well towards the Bridgford Road side of the square so early in the season.Whatever the panel decides, three innings completed by tea on the second day can be no one’s idea of acceptable progress in a first-class match, not when there are eight Test players involved. Batting is no picnic at this time of year, with moisture still close to the surface, but the balance between bat and ball here has been too heavily tilted in the bowlers’ favour.Even Ian Bell, capable of mastering any conditions, as he did in the first innings with the outstanding century that may ultimately be Warwickshire’s match-winning factor, found the going tough this time. He had made only 5, having already been beaten twice in the over, when he gave a catch to Chris Read off Harry Gurney as the left-armer slanted a ball across him. That Nottinghamshire have a chance of winning is a turn-round, however, which may help their cause. Tony Pigott, the ECB pitch liaison officer, arrived at tea to see the target of 300 to win, one that had looked too much at first in view of what had gone before, reduced by 92 during a partnership between Phil Jaques and Michael Lumb for the second wicket, with the demons in the pitch seemingly gone to ground.Yet there was another twist to come as Lumb was leg before, playing back to Jeetan Patel’s offspin, and Jaques, whose 64 is his best score so far for Nottinghamshire, succumbed to an unplayable lifter from Chris Wright that took the edge and had him caught behind.Warwickshire had been bowled out inside 40 overs, with three wickets each for Gurney and Peter Siddle, the Australia Test bowler, whose value to Nottinghamshire is becoming apparent now that he has some overs in his legs.Earlier, Nottinghamshire, 43 for 6 overnight, had recovered a little when Samit Patel (54) and Chris Read put on 72 for the seventh wicket. But their last four wickets fell in the space of eight balls, three of them in one over to Chris Woakes.

Hosein ten-for sets up T&T win

A round-up of the Regional Four Day Competition matches that ended on March 10

ESPNcricinfo staff10-Mar-2014Twenty-year-old left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein picked up his maiden ten-wicket haul to help Trinidad & Tobago comfortably beat Windward Islands in the Regional Four Day Competition. Hosein’s 6 for 33 in the first innings was instrumental in earning T&T a 100-run lead and he backed it up with another strong performance, taking 5 for 34 in the second which gave T&T its first win.Put in to bat, T&T were struck early blows before Adrian Barath and Jason Mohammad stabilised the innings with a 68-run stand for the third wicket. Barath was caught behind for 39 off Delorn Johnson, but Mohammed added another critical 55 with Stephen Katwaroo. The innings though slumped once Katwaroo was dismissed by Alston Bobb. T&T lost four wickets for 13, all to Bobb, including that of Mohammed for 79 and only some late order contributions lifted them to 222.Windward Islands had no answers to the spin of Hosein though as after an opening stand of 38, the team collapsed against his left-arm spin. Apart from Dwayne Smith, who was unbeaten on 48, none of the batsmen offered any resistance and the team was bowled out for 122.Darren Bravo then ensured T&T didn’t lose the advantage by scoring a gritty 69 off 188 balls. He was the eighth batsmen to be dismissed, but by that time, the lead had already swelled to 267. T&T were bowled out for 210 eventually, setting up a 311-run target. Windward Islands did marginally better in their second innings, scoring two more runs than the first, as they crumbled to a heavy defeat. As in the first innings, Hosein, who was playing only his third first-class match, did bulk of the damage and no one except Smith stood up to the challenge.Carlos Brathwaite’s four wickets in the second innings led Barbados’ efforts on the final day that saw them bowl Guyana out for 94 and complete a 136-run win. Brathwaite, who didn’t bowl in the first innings, accounted for four of the first five wickets to fell that reduce Guyana to 43 for 5 in chase of 231. The trend continued as Ashley Nurse and Sulieman Benn shared the remaining five wickets to dismiss Guyana in the 43rd over.In a low-scoring match, only two fifties were scored and none of the team could cross the 200-run mark. One of those half-centuries came from Barbados No. 3 Roston Chase, who revived the team from 58 for 4 to 132 for 6 before falling to Raun Johnson for 55. Veerasammy Permaul picked up three wickets in his 15th over to end Barbados’ innings on 184.Guyana made a strong start to their innings with a 92-run stand for the first wicket between Sewnarine Chattergoon and Tagnarine Chanderpaul. But Nurse cut through the top, picking up the wicket of Chattergoon and Assad Fudadin off successive deliveries. That triggered a remarkable collapse as Guyana lost the whole of the side within 48 runs, handing Barbados a 44-run lead. Benn ran through the bottom half to end up with 5 for 26.Barbados’ second innings response was similar to their first as some useful contributions by the top order ensured they crossed 150 before eventually being bowled out for 186. Devendra Bishoo, the legspinner, was the pick of the bowlers with his 5 for 70, the bowler’s first five-for this season. But on a pitch on which the highest total in the three innings was 186, a target of 231 proved to be too strong.
