How Rodgers could lineup at Man Utd

It appears increasingly likely that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be relieved of his duties as Manchester United manager, with Brendan Rodgers reportedly the frontrunner to replace him.

According to Manchester Evening News reporter Samuel Luckhurst, “key figures at United have privately accepted a change of manager is required” following their dismal start to the campaign.

Crushing defeats to local rivals Manchester City and Liverpool are believed to have played a key role in the Red Devils’ hierarchy’s thinking, although Solskjaer could see out the season while they line up a replacement.

Luckhurst claims that Rodgers is at the top of the Old Trafford outfit’s wishlist, while Ajax boss Erik ten Hag and Spain’s Luis Enrique are also greatly admired.

However, it’s hard to imagine Rodgers turning down the opportunity to take control one of British football’s biggest clubs once again.

With that in mind, here’s how Football FanCast expects the Northern Irishman to lineup should he take charge of the Red Devils in the coming months…

In goal, David de Gea’s recent return to form should be enough to maintain his place between the sticks ahead of Dean Henderson, although the Englishman certainly has the potential to reclaim the No.1 spot.

Ahead of the 31-year-old would likely be a familiar back four, but with one major addition at right-back in the shape of Max Aarons.

The highly-rated youngster has been linked with a £35m move to United and would offer a far more attacking alternative to Aaron Wan-Bissaka. Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire and Raphael Varane would complete the defensive unit.

But it’s in midfield where Rodgers would likely wring the changes. Paul Pogba’s future is far from certain, and the opportunity to sign Franck Kessie on a free transfer could be too good to turn down.

West Ham United’s Declan Rice is believed to be a top target for the Red Devils despite his £100m price tag, and the defensive-minded duo could switch between the No.6 and No.8 roles, providing a solid foundation for Bruno Fernandes.

And the forward line may also encounter some surprising decisions. Rodgers’ preference for a pressing style means Cristiano Ronaldo could find his game time limited, allowing a mobile trio of Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood and Jadon Sancho to thrive.

Sky reporter drops Ndombele claim

Speaking to GiveMeSport, journalist Michael Bridge of Sky Sports has dropped a claim involving Tottenham Hotspur star Tanguy Ndombele.

The Lowdown: Ndombele pushes for move?

After all the drama surrounding Harry Kane and his eventually failed exit from Spurs in the summer, some news then emerged of another big name wanting to leave north London.

Indeed, as per reliable reports, Ndombele told Tottenham chiefs he wanted to depart N17 before August 31 with the club record signing seemingly unsettled.

Now, a few months down the line, Bridge has made a claim whilst urging the Frenchman to do one thing.

The Latest: Ndombele ‘not massively happy’…

Following his stay at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with no exit coming to fruition, Bridge says the 24-year-old is still ‘not massively happy’ as a Lilywhites player.

However, given his move failed to materialise, the reporter has urged Ndombele to knuckle down and play his way back into top form.

“We all know he wanted to go and he’s not massively happy,” the Sky reporter told GMS.

“But he needs to knuckle down, for the benefit of him if he wants to be seen on the world stage.

“He’s not even in the French squad, there’s a reason for that.”

The Verdict: Time to cut losses?

It is pretty apparent from spells of form last year that Ndombele has frightening ability.

At one stage under former boss Jose Mourinho, it looked like the Spurs star had totally revitalised his Premier League career with praise from senior players at the time, like ex-Tottenham man Joe Hart, who apparently called him ‘unplayable’.

He also finished the 2020/2021 campaign as Spurs’ best dribbler in the English top flight, completing 2.2 of them on average per 90 and eclipsing the rest of his teammates (WhoScored).

Ndombele was even hailed by Martin Keown as ‘underrated in what he does’ and a tireless worker out of possession at one point (talkSPORT), which seems unbelievable given his reputation for not running as hard as some Spurs players.

If Nuno Espirito Santo can nurture the very best out of Ndombele and rekindle his happiness at Hotspur Way, there may just be hope for the club record signing yet, but it’s all down to him.

Australia boosted by North's steady approach

Since 2005 Australia have wanted a match-turner at No. 6, but in Marcus North they have an accumulator who is not in a rush to blast bowlers or go fishing. In two of his three Tests, North has made important contributions to boost the team, pushing them ahead patiently and contentedly.Over the past 12 months the side has had to develop a different attitude, engaging in lengthy arm wrestles instead of shoot-outs. Andrew Symonds’ final Test was in the West Indies last year and the departure of Matthew Hayden also forced the team to water down its attacking policy. North is not out of place when he lifts his pace, but Australia have benefited from his measured outlook. Most importantly for the squad, gloomy scenarios don’t bother North. There was a century on debut in Johannesburg, where he picked Australia up from 151 for 4, and here he entered with the side still 104 in arrears. Any slip would have exposed the lower order and threatened the gains made by the impressive centuries of Ricky Ponting and Simon Katich.Instead North remained unflustered during his 54 after joining Michael Clarke in a settling stand of 143 that took Australia towards the end-of-day comfort of 479 for 5. “Northy has played brilliantly again, as he did in Worcester,” Clarke said. “I think he’s looking forward to getting out there tomorrow and getting another big score.”North’s first ball provided a minor scare, when Monty Panesar spun one back and he didn’t offer a shot, and there were a couple of miscued sweeps, but usually he offered a confident bat. This was not the man of two weeks ago who looked so uncomfortable in three tour-game innings. Peace and security came with his unbeaten 191 at Worcester and on the opening two days in Cardiff his offspin was not required, leaving him to concentrate on his batting. No runs arrived for him before lunch, but he drove Stuart Broad for four through mid-on to open his account from his 12th ball. From there he would wait patiently until the boundary ball arrived, striking seven of them during his 131 deliveries. Clarke, Ponting and Katich were more effective, but North played the role of the steady man in the middle order.”Simon and Ricky were unbelievable,” Clarke said. “Marcus and I cashed in on some tired England bowlers. The start we got was fantastic and it was up to Northy and I, first to get into our innings, and then play away.”

Onions and Harmison put Durham on top

Durham 84 for 2 (Smith 21*, Muchall 6*) trail Hampshire 105 (Harmison 4-43) by 21 runs
ScorecardIt was Durham’s day at Riverside, as the reigning champions took advantage of the conditions to roll Hampshire over for 105, and then placed themselves in position to take a good lead on the second day when they finished with on 84 for 2. Graham Onions, playing his first Championship match since graduating to Test cricket, and the opening batsman Mark Stoneman were their best players of the day.Heavy rain for much of the previous day and in the early morning had put the day’s play at risk, but the ground recovered so well that the match was able to start at 12.15. Conditions were good for the bowlers, and Durham gained quite an advantage when they won the toss and put Hampshire in to bat. The pitch was lively, with enough bounce to see eight batsmen out caught in the cordon between wicketkeeper and gully during the day, and there was some movement, though it was never excessive.Durham seized the initiative from the first over, bowled by Onions: without a run yet on the board, Michael Carberry tried to hook a short ball but sliced a top edge to third slip. Jimmy Adams and John Crawley fought their way through the rest of the 45 minutes before lunch, scoring just 16 runs in 11 overs. Onions, often bouncing the batsmen, gave them a torrid time, while at the other end Steve Harmison was less consistent, often wayward in direction. The batsmen failed to take advantage, though, only seven runs coming off his five overs. The afternoon session was a dismal one for the visitors. Callum Thorp replaced Harmison and soon removed Adams (8), squaring him up and having him caught at fourth slip – Durham often employed four or even five in this area, and it proved profitable. John Crawley fell to Onions for 10, the catch bouncing off third slip straight into the hands of his neighbour at second, while Sean Ervine scored only 2 before dabbing weakly at a ball outside his off stump to give the keeper an easy catch. Onions’ excellent opening spell, on either side of lunch, read 13-3-19-3.From 26 for 4, Michael Lumb and Nic Pothas fought back with a partnership of 33, which was to be the highest of the innings. It was ended by the fourth seamer, Matthew Claydon, who bowled a full length, trapping Lumb lbw for 20 and then yorking Liam Dawson next ball. Dominic Cork averted the hat-trick and batted usefully with Pothas for a time. The latter played rather a strange innings, never looking in much trouble and every so often appearing ready to break out and dominate the bowling before apparently thinking better of it.Harmison, changing ends, bowled better from there and finished off the innings, first removing Cork for 13, flashing a head-high catch to second slip, and Imran Tahir, who preferred to play him from the region of square leg, but was bowled. David Griffiths soon fell as well, but James Tomlinson hung in there until Pothas was finally dismissed for 35, caught at third slip. The last pair avoided the ignominy of a double-innings total, the final score being 105. Harmison finished with 4 for 43, but Onions, who shattered the top order, was the best bowler with 3 for 22.Durham also began shakily, with Michael Di Venuto falling to third slip, off Tomlinson, for 7 in the second over. But Stoneman played the most impressive innings of the day, although against a lesser attack than Durham’s; he chose his shots well and in particular made life hard for Imran Tahir as a spin bowler was tried for the first time during the day. The Pakistani got his revenge in the end, though, with a beautifully flighted delivery that Stoneman, on 44, edged into the hands of slip; Durham 75 for 2. But Smith finished on 21 to see out the day in company with Gordon Muchall (6), and the team is well placed to take a firm grip on this match tomorrow.

Multiple-captain idea ridiculous – Vengsarkar

The former Indian chairman of selectors, Dilip Vengsarkar, has ridiculed John Buchanan’s multiple-captain theory and believes Sourav Ganguly should lead the Kolkata Knight Riders during the second season of the IPL

Dilip Vengsarkar: “I want Ganguly to go to Buchanan, whose idea it is, and ask what to do.”•AFP

The former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar has ridiculed John Buchanan’s multiple-captain theory and has said Sourav Ganguly should lead the Kolkata Knight Riders when the second season of the IPL gets underway in South Afica on April 18.”This is ridiculous. It is a mockery of the game with four captains telling the captain what to do and I’ll be glad to see [Sourav] Ganguly back at the helm of the Knight Riders,” Vengsarkar said. “Suppose there is one ball to go and six runs to be scored and then four guys come to advise. It can happen to Ganguly himself. I want Ganguly to go to Buchanan, whose idea it is, and ask him what to do.”Buchanan’s radical theory to have four or five captains leading the side thorugh the tournament was seen as a complete change to the whole approach to captaincy and leadership in cricket. The Knight Riders however put a lid on the controversy by releasing a statement yesterday saying that during a game the team would resort to a group of “strategists” who would report to one on-field captain while making decisions.Despite the latest decision, team sources said a compromise formula could lead to Sourav Ganguly captaining the team in the first five games after which, based on the team’s position, the role will be open to others.

McAtee can be Man City’s next David Silva

James McAtee has started the season in superb fashion for Manchester City’s academy and the 18-year-old could even prove to be the next David Silva in the future.

The attacking midfielder is a regular for City’s under-23 side despite being just 18 and looks set to be a part of Pep Guardiola’s first team in the future if he can maintain his recent superb form.

The playmaker, who is nicknamed the ‘Salford Silva’, attracted heavy interest from Championship clubs during the recent transfer window but City were clearly keen to keep him at the Etihad, with Guardiola suggesting recently: “Liam Delap, Cole Palmer, James McAtee, Luke Mbete, Romeo Lavia. There are five or six guys who will be with us.”

So far this season, McAtee has six goals and one assist in just three appearances in Premier League 2, with new academy manager Brian Barry-Murphy hugely impressed with his performances as he sang his praises recently, saying: “I think there is loads of his game he can still develop, and he’ll know that as he’s a very intelligent player.

“But the way he’s working in sync with the rest of the team is great for me because it’s very valuable.”

“I’m in the very early stages of getting to know James but I think he’s conscious of the fact he wants to get into positions where he can score goals.”

City’s next David Silva?

If McAtee can have anywhere near the influence that Silva had during his time at Manchester City in the future, then he will surely prove to be a hugely popular player at the Etihad Stadium.

The Spanish magician contributed 77 goals and 141 assists for the Citizens in 436 appearances and recently had a statue unveiled outside the Etihad, which literally solidifies his status as a Manchester City legend.

[freshpress-quiz id=“577936”]

Therefore, City fans will be hoping that McAtee can live up to his nickname, and if his performances with the academy continue, they surely won’t have too long to wait before seeing him make his first team debut.

Everton offered Newcastle Holgate

Many Everton fans have been left baffled by some transfer news on Mason Holgate.

As a report from earlier on in the week by The Daily Telegraph, which has since been shared across Twitter, Newcastle United were offered the chance to sign Holgate on loan in the summer window.

The central defender has already played the full 90 minutes in three of the Goodison Park faithful’s four games in total over all competitions so far this season, and even captained the team in the 2-1 away win at Huddersfield Town in the second round of the Carabao Cup (Transfermarkt).

With Ben Godfrey unable to feature yet this campaign as well, it certainly seems strange that the Merseyside club were considering letting him go out on loan, especially to a fellow rival in the Premier League.

These Toffees supporters were left baffled by the news on Holgate as it was shared across Twitter:

“Makes little sense for us to do that doesn’t it? Very odd Unless they wanted him out on loan to push to bring Sarr in from Chelsea on a loan”

“Would make absolutely no sense if true. Could see the benefit in trying to sell one of our centre-backs but not in loaning one out”
