Bowlers and Hodge lead Barisal to win

Barisal Burners remained in the hunt for a final four finish after they secured an upset over Dhaka Gladiators

ScorecardBarisal Burners remained in the hunt for a final four finish after they secured an upset over Dhaka Gladiators. The seven-wicket win was only their fourth win in the competition, and it stopped the Gladiators’ three-match winning run.Alauddin Babu picked up three wickets in his first BPL match while Azhar Mahmood continued to be the team’s most consistent player with three more. It helped the Burners bowl the Gladiators out for just 114 runs in 19.2 overs. It was a poor start from the form team that made all the difference. Mohammad Ashraful, who scored a hundred on Monday, and Tillekaratne Dilshan added 49 for the first wicket but the two aggressive batsmen went against their natural instincts. Their partnership took nearly 10 overs and by the time Dilshan fell, the Gladiators were struggling. It got worse when Shakib Al Hasan fell quickly and two overs later Ashraful’s run-out was another crucial moment.Anamul Haque and Darren Stevens made double figures but the rest folded quickly as Alauddin and Mahmood took control. The Burners reply began at a good rate but they lost three quick wickets. Brad Hodge and Sabbir Rahman then took charge, Hodge in particular as he made an unbeaten 70 off 44 balls with eight fours and three sixes.Their unbroken fourth wicket partnership of 68 runs finished off the match with more than six overs to spare and gave the Burners a very realistic chance of qualification as they still have two matches in hand.

Tahir leads Lions to big win

A collective batting performance and a 12-wicket haul by legspinner Imran Tahir propelled Lions to a 252-run win over Dolphins in Durban. Chasing 416, Dolphins were bowled out for 163 in the morning session on the final day, as Tahir ran through their middle and lower order. Besides Tahir, middle-order batsman Neil McKenzie starred in Lions’ win, scoring a century in the second innings to help cement their dominance in the contest. The seeds of the win were sown by a 93-run lead in the first innings. After scoring 248, a total built around half-centuries from Zander de Bruyn and Brett Pelser, Lions bowled Dolphins out for 155, as seamer Ethan O’Reilly and Tahir took eight wickets between them. Tahir claimed 5 for 42.Lions consolidated their advantage by scoring 322 for 4 before declaring their second innings on the third day. Besides McKenzie, wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock and de Bruyn also played productive knocks. Dolphins were already five wickets down by the end of the third day.Tahir, who had already taken three wickets, struck with the second ball of the final day, dismissing Cody Chetty for a duck. After a slow 42-run stand between Daryn Smit and Khaya Zondo, Tahir took his fifth wicket, trapping Smit lbw to leave Dolphins struggling at 160 for 7. Khayelihle Zondo, who scored 34, was then removed by de Bruyn before Tahir cleaned up the tail to lead his team to the win.The result left Lions in third position in the points table, with Dolphins behind them.

Karnataka debutant Ronit More destroys Goa

A round-up of the action from the first day of matches in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2011-12

ESPNcricinfo staff20-Feb-2012South ZoneMedium-pacer Ronit More grabbed a six-wicket haul on debut and helped Karnataka skittle Goa for 54 at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. Karnataka took just 12.3 overs to chase the total, meaning the match lasted just 33 overs. More, who had not played any first-class or List A game before the match, ran through the Goa line-up, and finished with 6 for 18 in 6.3 overs. Reagan Pinto was the only Goa batsman to reach double figures.L Balaji took a five-wicket haul before Dinesh Karthik and S Anirudha completed an easy win for Tamil Nadu over Andhra Pradesh at the Rajinder Singh Institute Ground in Bangalore. Balaji helped bowl Andhra out for 247, and then Karthik scored an unbeaten century as Tamil Nadu reached the target in just 39.5 overs. Balaji struck two early blows after putting Andhra in to bat. Prasanth Kumar guided the innings with his 73 off 87 balls, and Andhra were steady through the middle overs. Balaji came back to take late wickets and prevent a final onslaught; Andhra were bowled out in the 47th over. Tamil Nadu did not have much trouble chasing the target. Anirudha gave them a quick start with his 94 off 81 balls, and Karthik completed the job with his 103 not out off 83 balls.Hyderabad chased down 267 against Kerala, with two wickets to spare, at the Jain International Residential School Ground in Bangalore. Kerala, after choosing to bat, were propelled by a century from No. 3 Rohan Prem. Prem finished with 113 not out, and the rest of the line-up batted around him to put up a total of 266 for 6. T Suman and Ravi Teja got the chase off to a solid start with a 53-run stand, before four quick wickets put Kerala ahead. However, Akshath Reddy kept the innings going and, with wicketkeeper Ibrahim Khaleel, did enough to steer his side home. He made an unbeaten hundred, while Khaleel made 54, both at better than a run-a-ball, enabling Hyderabad to eventually reach their target with nine balls to spare.North Zone Delhi’s medium-pacers shot Jammu and Kashmir out for 120 to give their side a 125-run win at the Feroz Shah Kotla. Delhi had 245 to defend and Parvinder Awana had J & K* stuttering at 18 for 2 with two early wickets. A wicket from Ashish Nehra and two from Pradeep Sangwan made that 33 for 5. Rajat Bhatia got into the act, taking three wickets to complete the job. Only four J & K batsmen managed to get to double figures, with Hardeep Singh’s 40 the top score. Delhi’s total had been built on a solid performance from the top order. Unmukt Chand scored 46, Mohit Sharma got 36 and Mithun Manhas scored 41 to set a solid base. There was a stutter in the middle overs but Sangwan and Nehra got some late runs to lift the total to 245. It proved to be more than enough.Himachal Pradesh won a hard-fought match against Services by 18 runs at the Model Sports Complex in Delhi. Himachal chose to bat and were off to a rocky start, before Prashant Chopra, Paras Dogra and S Sriram, in combination, put on partnerships of 102 and 98 to take them to 291. Dogra was the top scorer with 114. Services’ chase was built around an unbeaten hundred from captain Yashpal Singh and they looked the firm favourites when he was involved in a 106-run stand with Sanjeev Mishra, scored at almost seven an over. However, three late wickets within the space of 11 balls pegged Services back and they fell just short.A rapid half-century from Amitoze Singh helped Punjab chase down 244 against Haryana at the Palam A Ground in Delhi. Haryana chose to bat and were carried to 243 for 6 on the back of a solid showing from their top order. Opener Nitin Saini and Sandeep Godara put on a century stand, before Sachin Rana scored a quick, unbeaten 59. Punjab’s chase had several contributors. Karan Goel and Gurkirat Ahluwalia made scores in the 40s, Mandeep Singh and Bipul Sharma hit smaller cameos and Amitoze provided the finishing touches with a boundary-studded 76: he hit seven fours and two sixes in his 56-ball knock, ensuring Punjab cantered home in the 47th over, with four wickets to spare.East ZoneTripura never recovered from medium-pacer Arup Das’ early blows and ended up losing to Assam by eight wickets at the Jadavpur University Complex in Kolkata. Tripura were put in, and Das took three wickets to have them struggling at 61 for 4. They ended up being bowled out for 180 and Assam chased the total in just 38 overs. Vinayak Samant’s 45 was the only significant score in Tripura’s innings, and they did not last the 50 overs. Dheeraj Jadhav top-scored in the chase with 75, while Pallavkumar Das also got a half-century.A Sourav Ganguly-led Bengal side put in an all-round performance to comprehensively beat Orissa at Eden Gardens. Bengal’s bowlers maintained a tight grip on Orissa through their innings, and bowled them out for 201. Bengal lost three early wickets in the chase but Wriddhiman Saha and Anustup Majumdar shared a 190-run fourth-wicket stand to take them home in the 35th over. Majumdar scored his third List A century, getting 100 off 93 balls. Left-arm spinner Iresh Saxena was the standout bowler for Bengal, taking three wickets and conceding just 20 runs in his 10 overs.Central ZoneBhuvneshwar Kumar and RP Singh ran through Railways’ line-up, helping Uttar Pradesh successfully defend 186 at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Ground in Nagpur. UP chose to bat** and none of their batsmen other than Mohammad Kaif, wicketkeeper Amir Khan and Bhuvneshwar could really contribute much, resulting in them being bowled out for 186. Krishnakant Upadhyay was the most effective bowler for Railways, taking 4 for 39. Bhuvneshwar and RP Singh then proceeded to tear apart Railways’ top order, reducing them to 27 for 5, before a half-century stand between Faiz Fazal and Ashish Yadav got Railways briefly back in the match. But once the partnership was broken, UP continued to peg away at regular, short intervals to edge home, bowling Haryana out for 169 in 47.2 overs.A team performance helped Rajashtan beat Vidarbha by three wickets at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Jamtha, Nagpur. Rajasthan were asked to field and their bowlers responded, sharing the wickets around in tidy spells to restrict the hosts to 206. Only Urvesh Patel could make a contribution of note for Vidarbha: 72, the highest score in the match. Five of Rajashtan’s top six got into double figures in the chase, which was enough to make sure the moderate target was overhauled. Dishant Yagnik was Rajasthan’s top scorer, putting together a patient 51 to set up the chase, before being run out.*February 21, 18:24: This report originally said Delhi had Assam stuttering.

Room for improvement for both teams

ESPNcricinfo previews the second ODI between West Indies and India in Port of Spain

The Preview by Nitin Sundar07-Jun-2011Match factsWednesday, June 8, Port of Spain
Start time 0900 (1300 GMT)Can Ramnaresh Sarwan roll back the years?•Associated Press

Big PictureThe first ODI epitomised everything that is going wrong with West Indies cricket. It began with the openers: in Chris Gayle’s absence, the uncalled-for timidity from Lendl Simmons and Kirk Edwards ended up giving credence to Sunil Gavaskar’s comparison of Munaf Patel to Glenn McGrath. Once the spinners came on, the middle order shut shop. Nothing captured West Indies’ woes more succinctly than the number 169 – their dot-ball count on Monday.Ramnaresh Sarwan, who has collared better Indian attacks in tougher circumstances in the past, was restricted to poking and jabbing in hope. Marlon Samuels also was a pale shadow of the batsman who thumped a fierce century against India eight years ago. The result was a score as underwhelming as the bowling attack that tried to defend it, and an easy win for India, despite their own skittish approach to the chase. West Indies will need a huge lift in all departments – including their lethargic out-cricket – if they are to match the Indians.Twice in two games on tour, India’s top order has faltered. The depth in their line-up opened up escape routes on both occasions, but Duncan Fletcher will want more application at the top. Parthiv Patel has a wide range of shots, but will be expected to put a bigger price on his wicket, after perishing to a needless run-out in the first ODI. Shikhar Dhawan looked ill at ease against seam and spin, but to his credit he managed to scrap his way to a half-century. S Badrinath knows how long it has taken him to get a second chance in the India side, and will try to make the opportunity count. And despite finishing in sublime fashion, Rohit Sharma will want to revisit his alarming shot-selection early on. In short, there is plenty of room for improvement from both sides.Form guide (most recent first)West Indies: LWWLL
India: WWWWW
The spotlightAmit Mishra goes about his work with such quiet efficiency that he rarely gets noticed. On Monday, he easily out-bowled Harbhajan Singh without getting the reward he deserved. There was loop, flight, drift and variety, and at times the West Indies batsmen were just not good enough to edge him. R Ashwin breathes down Mishra’s neck for the spot of second spinner, but his rhythm on Monday should give him another chance. Mishra now needs wickets to back his case for the rest of the series.Over the past year or so, Dwayne Bravo has struggled to live up to his own standards, especially with the bat. In the first one-dayer, he was beginning to get into his groove when he walked past a Harbhajan drifter. When Bravo is in good form, he is a fine player of spin, and the dominance is founded upon his sure footwork. Will he be able to reprise that fluency in front of his home crowd?Team newsIndia are unlikely to fiddle with the two-seamer, two-spinner combination given the lifeless nature of the pitch at Queen’s Park Oval. Manoj Tiwary might come up in team discussions, but S Badrinath has earned at least a couple of opportunities to fail in the middle order. Ishant Sharma, too, is likely to be eased into action later in the series.India (possible): 1 Parthiv Patel (wk), 2 Shikhar Dhawan, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 S Badrinath, 5 Rohit Sharma, 6 Suresh Raina (capt), 7 Yusuf Pathan, 8 Harbhajan Singh, 9 Amit Mishra, 10 Praveen Kumar, 11 Munaf Patel.West Indies will seriously consider bringing in Kieron Pollard to inject some urgency in the middle order. While Anthony Martin gave a good account of himself with the ball, it is tough to imagine West Indies succeeding against India with two specialist legspinners in their XI.West Indies (possible): 1 Lendl Simmons, 2 Kirk Edwards, 3 Darren Bravo, 4 Ramnaresh Sarwan, 5 Marlon Samuels, 6 Dwayne Bravo, 7 Kieron Pollard/Andre Russell, 8 Darren Sammy (capt), 9 Carlton Baugh (wk), 10 Ravi Rampaul, 11 Devendra Bishoo/Anthony Martin.Stats and trivia This will be the 98th one-dayer between these two sides. India have won 40, and West Indies 54 Among the players in this series, Ramnaresh Sarwan (1319) has scored most runs in India-West Indies matchesQuotes”When you play for India it is a given that fans and media would talk about your performance. I have no problem with it. But yes I have worked extremely hard over my fitness in the last three months and I want this tour to count for me.”

Defiant Glamorgan hold up Surrey

Glamorgan’s batting line-up, notably nightwatchman Huw Waters and Graham Wagg, produced a rearguard action to hold up Surrey’s victory charge on the third day at Cardiff

22-Apr-2011Stumps
Scorecard
Glamorgan’s batting line-up, notably nightwatchman Huw Waters and Graham Wagg, produced a rearguard action to hold up Surrey’s victory charge on the third day of the County Championship Division Two match at Cardiff. By the close Glamorgan had reached 377 for 9 in their first innings, requiring a further 49 runs to avoid the follow-on, after last pair James Harris and Dean Cosker survived the final 11.2 overs.Waters and Stewart Walters had teamed up on 95 for 4, 480 runs adrift of Surrey’s 575 for 7 declared in their first innings – and 331 short of the follow-on target. However, the fifth-wicket pair kept Surrey at bay for most of the morning session.Walters, making his Glamorgan debut against his former county, survived a strong lbw shout from Stuart Meaker on 10 before the Glamorgan pair brought up the 50 partnership. But Walters had his middle stump removed by Meaker for 35 when the Surrey seamer switched ends to take his fourth wicket as they slipped to 158 for 5, ending a fifth-wicket stand of 63.By lunch Glamorgan had crawled onto 169 for 5, with only 74 runs coming in 30 overs and Waters unbeaten on 20 from 116 balls. The 24-year-old continued to be a key man for Glamorgan as he remained unbeaten on 48 from 163 balls in three hours and 16 minutes when the players were taken off the field for rain at 2.35pm, a delay which lasted 75 minutes. The tally beat the 24-year-old’s previous career-best of 34, scored against Kent at Canterbury in 2005, where he batted for three hours and 10 minutes and faced 192 balls.Waters also showed bravery after being struck on the hand, helmet and body several times by Meaker and Jade Dernbach. He needed treatment for knocks to his hand and head in two five-minute breaks in play. There was a dramatic start to the final session. In the first over Waters completed his maiden first-class half-century and in the next he was run out by Tom Maynard going for a risky single. It brought an end to a fine rearguard action which saw him frustrate Surrey forthree hours and 24 minutes, while facing 169 balls. After Waters’ demise there were two more wickets for Surrey – Mark Wallace was caught behind off Batty for 55 and Robert Croft had made 18 when he pushed a delivery straight to cover point off England Lions seamer Dernbach. Ninth-wicket pair Wagg and Harris added two more bonus points, Wagg hitting 48 from 53 balls before falling to Chris Schofield before Harris and Cosker took Glamorgan to the close.
