South Africa have greater bowling depth – Donald

Allan Donald has backed his countrymen to come out on top in the battle of the pace attacks during the Test series against England

Firdose Moonda23-Dec-2015Having come off defeats in spin-friendly conditions, both South Africa and England will feel more comfortable in surroundings where their quick bowlers should prosper. The head-to-head between the two pace attacks will be one of the fascinating contests of the next month but, unsurprisingly, Allan Donald, South Africa’s former bowling coach, is clear which pack he is backing. For Donald, it is the support that South Africa have available to Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel which gives them the upper hand. They are missing Vernon Philander due to injury, but England are also likely to have their depth tested early in the series with James Anderson unlikely to be fit for Durban and Donald believes South Africa have greater firepower below the new-ball pair.”In their own conditions and when they are firing as a unit, the South African attack is the best out there,” Donald told ESPNcricinfo. “It’s not just about what we know, that Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel and James Anderson and Stuart Broad are world-class bowlers, it also about the rest of the attack. Steven Finn, Ben Stokes and Chris Woakes have not played Test cricket in South Africa and so it will be up to them to show what they are capable of in these conditions.”Contrastingly, South Africa’s supporting seamers, Kyle Abbott and Kagiso Rabada have enjoyed significant success in their own conditions. Abbott racked up figures only his franchise coach Lance Klusener has bettered on Test debut when he took 7 for 29 in his first match against Pakistan while Rabada broke the first-class record last season for the best match figures when he took 14 for 105 for Lions against Dolphins.Although Rabada and Abbott have just eight Test caps between them, Donald believes South Africa’s depth will help them dominate. “They will definitely miss Vernon because in home conditions, when there is something in the wicket, he will find it and exploit it but Kyle Abbott has been consistent and applied pressure every time he has played and Rabada looks better every time we see him.”Even outside of the current squad, there are guys putting their hands up. Chris Morris has been good and we should not forget about Hardus Viljoen. He has pace and he a is a big, aggressive boy. There’s a lot of talent in the tank.”But Donald is under no illusions that the bowlers are not the only ones responsible for South Africa’s ability to compete in the series. After the way they were defeated in India, Donald knows that the onus will be on the batsmen to start the redemption. “Whatever England brings, South Africa must respond with the bat,” he said. “We’ve got to score big runs and make England work for every wicket.”That sounds similar to what South Africa did in 2012, when Donald was part of the coaching staff that oversaw the team’s rise to No.1. He revealed that then the idea was to target England’s premier pacemen. “We said we want Anderson and Broad to bowl a lot of overs,” Donald explained. “We want to wear the rest down so that they have to keep bringing their main bowlers back.”England would be wise to adopt a similar mindset in this series, trying to make sure that Hashim Amla has to keep returning to Steyn – who may still have to shake off rush post-injury – and Morkel. Steyn has not bowled competitively since the first week of November, when he sustained groin injury in the Mohali Test. That was the eighth injury Steyn has suffered since June 2013 and the second groin strain and there are fears he may be in decline but Donald does not think so.”I’ve heard some things about how it could be the start of the end and I don’t think that’s true. I think you will write him off at your peril. He will bounce back hard,” Donald said. “As much as South Africa missed him in India, I think it was a blessing in disguise because he is really fresh and hungry now I spoke to him a few days ago and he wants to make this series a big one.”Donald admitted Steyn’s inactivity over the last few weeks is not ideal but said quality would trump quantity of balls bowled. “It is a concern that he has not bowled in a while because you want overs under the belt and miles in the leg but a champion is always a champion.”And that is exactly why Donald thinks the South African team will be formidable foes for England over the next six weeks. “It’s not nice getting thumped 3-nil and they will be carrying scars,” Donald said “That makes it very important how they start because if they start badly it could be a long series but this team is too good not to stand up.”

'Confidence comes from performances' – Misbah

Misbah-ul-Haq, Pakistan’s captain, has said his team is full of confidence after their run of form in 2011

ESPNcricinfo staff12-Dec-2011Pakistan expectedly wrapped up the first Test against Bangladesh on the fourth day, giving them their fifth win in their previous nine Tests – this one by an innings-and-184-runs. That run of form, encompassing the last 12 months, includes series wins over New Zealand, Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka. One of the factors in Pakistan’s consistent run has been the captaincy of Misbah-ul-Haq, who took over in the wake of the spot-fixing scandal in 2010. Misbah, however, chose to give his team the credit after their latest triumph.”I think if the team is doing well then credit goes to everyone, which also includes the captain,” Misbah said. “But the main thing is players are important in the team. If they are not performing, the captain can’t do anything. For which I think the credit goes to every player. They are putting in their efforts and fulfilling their responsibilities. That’s why the team is winning.”Misbah put his team’s determination to win matches down to their reaction to the spot-fixing scandal which could have easily thrown them into disarray. “I think the way we are performing, you can say what happened with Pakistan cricket, the boys have come out really strong and all wanted to do well. It’s the reason behind that. The day controversies hit the team, I think the boys had it set in their mind that they will prove that they are a good cricket team and good players.”While Pakistan’s recent string of results have naturally infused the side with confidence, Misbah said the spark came from their series against South Africa last year, where Pakistan fought to draw both Tests. “The confidence comes from the performances. When you are performing as a team game by game and you are performing well, the confidence is building. This is really helping us as a team. The series against South Africa in October last year was a big test for us. We played really strong against them in the two Test matches and at that time South Africa was one of the best Test sides.”After that the team got the confidence as every player performed in that series which kept on building in every match after that.”Misbah felt that Bangladesh were under huge pressure in Chittagong as they collapsed for 135 in the first innings. Though they made a better fist of it in the second to reach 275, it was mostly a struggle. “In the first innings they got out easily and once you get out easily on a flat track I think it’s difficult to make the comeback. That helped us. They lacked in confidence. A batsmen is helped if he is consistently scoring runs. If you are not scoring runs, it becomes difficult to stand strong as a batsman.”Pakistan’s decision to field was vindicated by the result and Misbah said that it was a strategy they had been employing for some time now. “We managed to exploit the wicket with our bowlers in the first two sessions of the first day. For the last two years we have been doing this and so far we have been able to take good advantage of it. Once we have the target in our mind, the bowlers and the batsmen together performed really well. So if we ever find even a little advantage for the bowlers, we choose to bowl first.”

Mortaza picked for New Zealand one-dayers

Mashrafe Mortaza will only play the limited-overs matches in New Zealand and not the one-off Test

Cricinfo staff27-Jan-2010Mashrafe Mortaza, out with an injury since July, has been included in Bangladesh’s squad for the short series in New Zealand next month but will only play the limited-overs matches and not the one-off Test. He has requested the Bangladesh Cricket Board not to consider him for the captaincy, which means that Shakib Al Hasan will continue as captain.Mortaza, who underwent knee surgery after the tour of West Indies last year, was forced to miss the home Tests against India and the tri-series, also featuring Sri Lanka. He was the officially named captain before the team departed for the West Indies but since the first Test of that tour, when he suffered the injury, Shakib has led the team in his absence. The 15-member squad for New Zealand does not include any new faces. The batsman Shahriar Nafees, who failed in his comeback Test against India in Chittagong, has been dropped and replaced by his former ICL team-mate Aftab Ahmed. The selectors also recalled the left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak to the Test squad, at the expense of Enamul Haque jnr. The fast bowler Mahbubul Alam, who didn’t play the Tests against India, has also been omitted in favour of Nazmul Hossain, who has recovered from a right quadriceps muscle injury which had ruled him out of the tri-series.Junaid Siddique, who replaced Nafees in the second Test against India in Mirpur, will join the team for the Test at Hamilton on February 15. The tour begins on February 3 with a one-off Twenty20, followed by three ODIs.Squad: Shakib Al Hasan (capt), Mushfiqur Rahim (vice-capt/wk), Tamim Iqbal, Imrul Kayes, Junaid Siddique, Mohammad Ashraful, Raqibul Hasan, Mahmudullah, Aftab Ahmed, Naeem Islam, Shahadat Hossain, Rubel Hossain, Abdur Razzak, Nazmul Hossain, Shafiul Islam, Mashrafe Mortaza

Badrinath double punishes Mumbai

For the second straight day Mumbai were tormented by S Badrinath, whose magnificent double-century strengthened Tamil Nadu at the Bandra Kurla Complex

S Badrinath tormented Mumbai for the second straight day, his magnificent double-century strengthening Tamil Nadu’s position at the Bandra Kurla Complex. With the pitch slowing down drastically, Badrinath and his overnight partner C Ganapathy took advantage with a 328-run stand that pushed the visitors past 500.Mumbai’s new-ball pair troubled the batsmen with their movement early on Tuesday and would have hoped for a repeat today. But Badrinath and Ganapathy brought to the crease the same solidity that helped them dominate yesterday, Ganapathy leading the charge while Badrinath played anchor. They were also helped by the low and slow track that gave the batsmen enough time to read the line and play comfortably. Yesterday Ganapathy was happy stealing runs at one end as the Mumbai bowlers tried to hunt down Badrinath. Ganapathy lacks his partner’s flourish but compensated by playing to the ball’s merit. He also showed admirable patience for a bowler-turned-allrounder, enough to exhaust the Mumbai attack. He reached his maiden century with a firm push off Abhishek Nayar to the midwicket boundary, a big moment for the 28-year-old: he went down on one knee and doffed his cap towards the dressing room where his team-mates cheered wildly. The century continues a fantastic season for Ganapathy, the leading Ranji allrounder with 320 runs and 16 wickets. As the day progressed it seemed the only way Mumbai could dislodge the pair was through a run-out. And that’s exactly what happened: a few overs after lunch Badrinath tapped to cover and rushed out for a single, Ganapathy hesitated, though, and his indecision cost him as Iqbal Abdulla came up with a direct hit.But Mumbai’s troubles were far from over as Badrinath’s appetite for runs was huge. For much of the first two sessions he had been content to rotate the strike. His first boundary arrived in the day’s 10th over with a beautifully timed square cut off Malvi. Nayar’s first delivery of the day, short and wide of off stump, was summarily dispatched past point.
Badrinath understood that the only way Tamil Nadu could continue to dominate the game was by extending their stay at the wicket. So he played for time. Between lunch and tea he scored just 37 runs, defending every bowler stoutly.Sadly there was an absence of a contest as the Mumbai bowlers failed to exert any control over their lengths. The only time the ball beat the batsman was when Dhawal Kulkarni got some seam movement early morning. Bowling in the channel Kulkarni, last year’s leading wicket-taker, had tempted Ganapathy to attempt a shot. He nearly succeeded the first time as the outside edge flew to the right of Wasim Jaffer at first slip. Kulkarni repeated the same ball, which missed Ganpathy’s outside edge by inches. But for the rest of the day the Mumbai bowlers just went through the motions. Even the spinners resorted to defensive lines once they realised they were not getting any turn or bounce. It was little surprise then that Badrinath helped himself to his fourth double century, and his first against Mumbai, rocking back to cut Nayar beautifully behind square. After Ganapathy’s exit, he marshalled the tail nicely to push the visitors past 500.But the job is only half done for Tamil Nadu and a challenge awaits their bowlers, who will have to stay patient to prise out wickets. WV Raman, Tamil Nadu’s coach, agreed. “Based on the how our batsmen applied themselves my bowlers would have a tough job,” he said.

Real Madrid finally beaten! Winners, losers and ratings as Champions League winners stunned by Leipzig

The European champions were 2-0 down within 20 minutes as they were bested by the German side in the penultimate game of the group stage.

Real Madrid's unbeaten start to the season has finally come to an end!

RB Leipzig brought the European champions crashing back down to earth with a well-deserved three points.

Vinicius Junior found the net and Rodrygo fired in a very late penalty, but it was not enough against a German side who were more than up to the challenge.

Josko Gvardiol, Christopher Nkunku and Timo Werner were on target to upset Carlo Ancelotti's team who were just too flat and lacking inspiration for too much of this match.

The Spanish champions remain top of the group, however, with just one game left to play.

With Leipzig now a point behind them, they have a battle on their hands for that coveted first place in Group F.

GettyThe Winners

Vinicius Junior:

He pulled a goal back for his side by getting free in the box and sending a fantastic header into the back of the net. More than that, however, the Brazilian was once again all over the attack, always looking for a way to give his side a chance against the Germans. He set up Rodrygo well at 2-0, but his attacking team-mate couldn't get his shot on target – once again showing that he is the man Madrid can rely on while Ballon d'Or winner Karim Benzema is out of commission.

Josko Gvardiol:

There has been growing interest from across Europe in the centre-back and he certainly showed why this evening. He got ahead of Antonio Rudiger to pounce on a great chance and nod his side into the lead to show that he can be a danger up front. He also looked strong in defence, though, and was comfortable on the ball.

Christopher Nkunku:

The best player on the pitch. He was such a livewire against a strong Madrid defence. His goal was well taken but he was a big threat throughout this match. It's no surprise to see so many teams willing to pay big money to sign the France attacker as most defences would find it tough to keep him quiet.

AdvertisementGettyThe Losers

Rodrygo:

Try as he might, he just could not get into this game. The forward must be commended for his determination in dropping back to try and get involved but very little worked in his favour until he won the last-minute penalty that was too little, too late.

Carlo Ancelotti:

He made some questionable choices with his starting XI, lining up with a flat midfield and a lack of attacking inspiration. Ancelotti then waited too long to mix up his midfield, only bringing Eden Hazard on for the last 10 minutes. A match like this will surely have him pushing for new signings in the January window.

Thibaut Courtois:

For the first time this season the Belgian goalkeeper has conceded more than once in a game. Courtois let three goals slip this time around, and while he was not totally to blame for any of them, he will feel he could have done better with Gvardiol's opener and went to the ground too early as Nkunku fired in the second.

GettyReal Madrid Ratings: Defence

Thibaut Courtois (6/10):

The goalkeeper produced some strong saves but he made it easy for Gvardiol to knock in the opener by diverting a save back into the middle of the box. Later in the half, he came too far out, was easily beaten and lucky to see a long-range shot hit the side of the net. There wasn't much he could do about the home team's second goal, though.

Lucas Vazquez (5/10):

Got forward a lot and tried hard to help his team create something from the wing as he took the place of Dani Carvajal, who has underwhelmed so much this season. However, he is clearly not the answer to Madrid's problems on the right. Just not good enough.

Eder Militao (7/10):

Overall he looked good and was once again a wall at the back for Madrid. Saying that, he let Timo Werner go free in the vital moment as the German attacker moved towards the back post and tapped in the goal that made it 3-1.

Antonio Rudiger (6/10):

Quite underwhelming as he did not react to the loose ball that Gvardiol jumped at to open the scoring then failed to stand up to a couple of other Leipzig attacks.

Nacho (5/10):

A third start in the Champions League for Carlo Ancelotti's men this season and while he was not terrible, he did nothing to stand out either before he was replaced by David Alaba with just over 20 minutes left.

GettyMidfield

Eduardo Camavinga (5/10):

You cannot deny his talent but he looked out of place in this team as he was playing high up the field. Madrid missed a player like Luka Modric as the away side were lacking some forward thinking in midfield.

Aurelien Tchouameni (7/10):

The best of the three midfielders for the visitors, Tchouameni did not shy away from digging in with a few tackles but was perhaps let down by the shape of a midfield that lacked a proper creator.

Toni Kroos (6/10):

A classy and comfortable passer of the ball as always but he did not have much of an influence on the game.

Cricket Australia trying to draw T20 fans to Tests

A growing number of people sated by the Twenty20 entree have compelled Cricket Australia to go back to work on the main course. Disappointing levels of spectator “graduation” from T20 to international cricket were a major reason for CA’s decision to significantly cut prices for Test and limited-overs matches ahead of the next summer.A review of ticket pricing and availability was undertaken by CA’s commercial department after a series of disappointing international crowds at various points of the past two summers, a trend in direct contrast to the burgeoning attendances for the Big Bash League.

Cricket Australia’s tickets review

  • Extensive consultation process internally

  • Comprehensive review of ticket prices from other sporting and major entertainment events

  • Market research involving surveying a representative sample of people across Australia to assess propensity to attend cricket at different price points

  • Referred to learnings from other cricket events, including the 2015 World Cup and BBL

Ever since the BBL was ushered into existence at the Australian Cricket Conference in 2010, CA and its chief executive James Sutherland have maintained that the tournament was designed to bring new fans to the game who would ultimately take on a love for Tests and ODIs.However, a call to cut prices significantly – each state will offer general admission tickets at a mere $30 for adults while also scaling back the cost of higher grade reserve seats – has been made out of concern that the BBL’s growth has not caused the sort of “trickle-up” effect CA had hoped for. This is largely because while BBL tickets have been kept affordable – general admission tickets around $20 for adults – despite their popularity, international pricing has reflected an era before the emergence of the T20 competition. This has resulted in vast swathes of empty seats at matches where spectators could be hard pressed to find anything for under $50. Sutherland said the BBL’s success had helped encourage a rethink.”Clearly the reason why we’re breaking records in terms of aggregate attendance is off the back of BBL growth in attendance,” Sutherland said when announcing the price changes. “More people attended the BBL last year than attended the World Cup. Over a million people came through the gates to attend BBL cricket.”International cricket is still really strongly supported. And part of our strategy has been for us to bring new people to the game, through BBL cricket and at the same time graduate their interest into international cricket. And part of our pricing review and our research has been with that in mind, to continue to graduate that interest … into the premium form, being international cricket.”I think we’ve learned a lot from the BBL and I think we’ve taken some of the best parts of that and incorporated that into the review. But it’s also a lot about positioning and ensuring that international cricket is the premium format and we continue to bring the best possible teams into the country to play the game, play international cricket over those three formats.”Since selling the BBL to free-to-air television where it has been a major success for Network Ten, CA has faced a balancing act between its two broadcasters. Nine has been synonymous with the game in Australia for nearly 40 years, and the need to build a more compelling international television spectacle has also played a part – it is felt that empty grounds discourage viewers from tuning in.”Certainly our focus is to get as many people into our grounds as possible – we make no bones about the fact that our desired state is full grounds,” Sutherland said. “We face challenges from time to time, certainly with Test cricket to get people into grounds when people have work commitments and kids are still at school but there’s lots of different ways in which we are trying to change that.”Obviously day-night Test cricket is one of the things but also this pricing strategy is taking a lot of those things into account as well. The backdrop for television is always something that looks better. From our perspective the whole thing is greater fan engagement.”Another factor in the pricing changes is the unknown about how much more the BBL can continue to grow. Recent downturns in T20 competitions in England and India’s IPL have suggested that the more youthful Australian tournament cannot be expected to keep building at its current rate.”We don’t see ourselves as a competitor with IPL. We’ve been very, very focussed with BBL as something which is tailored to the Australian market,” Sutherland said. “Coming off the trajectory we’ve had, it’s going to be always challenging to maintain that growth. To some extent it will be cyclical.”But at the same time we lift our sights high in terms of our aspirations with BBL and see no reason why we can’t continue. We’ll continue to develop our event presentation to ensure those who pay good money to come and watch the cricket are entertained, not just when the cricket is being played but in other aspects of what’s offered at venues.”
