Aaron Judge Injury: Three Ways Yankees Can Deal With Star’s Absence at Trade Deadline

Alarm bells are blaring in the Bronx after Aaron Judge was placed on the 10-day IL with a right flexor strain. While the Yankees were lucky to avoid further injury to their superstar outfielder, the injury couldn't have come at a worse time with the team currently owning MLB's second worst record since June 13.

As the team continues to flounder across virtually every facet of the game, they are also sliding down the standings and find themselves at risk of potentially missing out on the postseason altogether.

As it stands, the Yankees sit in second in the AL East and have fallen 6 1/2 games behind the division-leading Blue Jays. New York has lost seven of its last 10, enabling the third-place Red Sox to narrow the gap between them to just one game. The wild card race is tightening, too, as the Yankees are holding onto the best of the three AL wild card spots by a thread, with their lead shrinking to just one game.

Judge's injury will require some steady navigation from the front office as it reassesses its best steps at the trade deadline. Losing Judge for any period of time will likely see New York slip further down the standings, and they'll also be forced to decide whether Giancarlo Stanton is a viable option in right field given Judge's elbow injury and its impact on his ability to throw when he returns.

We'll take a look at a few courses of action for the Yankees at the trade deadline, discussing what their best moves are following the temporary absence of their leader and AL MVP candidate in Judge.

Remain Buyers, but Focus on Players With Multiple Years of Control

One option for the Yankees is to stick to their guns and remain aggressive at the trade deadline. However, there remains the reality that this team simply might not have what it takes to win a World Series, especially after Judge's injury. If that is the case, their best bet would be to still try to improve the roster this season, but pursue players that going to be pure rentals.

The Ryan McMahon trade is a prime example of that, having brought over a standout defensive third baseman and a left-handed hitter who is under contract for two more seasons. Even if this season falls flat, McMahon's steady glove will be a valuable asset at the hot corner for New York for the next two seasons.

Another name that fits this billing is Mitch Keller from the Pirates, who is under contract through 2028. He's one of the best arms available at the deadline and would command a hefty return, but he's been one of the few bright spots in Pittsburgh this season and could be a significant improvement to the Yankees' rotation both this year and for years to come.

Acquire a Defensive-Minded Outfielder

With Judge set to return as a DH whenever he's activated from IL, Giancarlo Stanton will be forced to play the outfield for the first time in two years. With Jasson Dominguez already providing shoddy performances out in left field, the Yankees would realistically boast the worst defensive outfield in MLB if forced to start both Dominguez and Stanton.

One way to alleviate this would be to acquire a defensive-minded outfielder to put into a platoon of sorts with Stanton and Dominguez. A reunion with a player like Harrison Bader from the Twins would likely be a relatively inexpensive deal that would bring a versatile outfielder back to a team he already has some familiarity with. Bader has appeared at all three outfield positions in Minnesota this year, flexibility which could prove invaluable as the Yankees look to realign their defense in Judge's absence.

Business As Usual

There's certainly still a belief within the organization that the team can compete in 2025, and despite the Judge injury, it's possible the Yankees approach the trade deadline as they otherwise would've with a healthy Judge.

That would entail swinging big in order to buff up the pitching staff, both in the starting rotation and the bullpen. The Yankees have a team ERA of 6.16 over the last four weeks as their pitching staff has faltered massively. Bringing in a quality starter like the aforementioned Keller or one of Merrill Kelly or Zac Gallen from the Diamondbacks could help turn things around. They'd also need to bring in a reliable late-innings reliever, perhaps Pirates closer David Bednar or Ryan Helsley from the Cardinals, with Luke Weaver and Devin Williams also not living up to expectations.

The Judge injury certainly will force the front office to reassess, and precisely what direction the team intends to take is not yet clear, but there are a few options they can look to if they still want to be buyers over the next few days.

Arsenal flop who looks like he belongs in the Emery era must be dropped

Since taking the manager’s job almost six years ago, Mikel Arteta has got a lot right at Arsenal.

The Spaniard has taken a team that felt destined to fall further down the Premier League table and turned them into serious challengers.

Moreover, in addition to overhauling the culture at the club, he also completely revamped the squad, getting more transfers right than wrong.

However, as with all managers, he has also made his share of mistakes in the market, and one of his more recent ones feels like the sort of signing Unai Emery would’ve made.

Emery vs Arteta in the transfer market

During his short 18-month reign at Arsenal, Emery signed just 12 players, with two of those being on loan and one being a free.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Unfortunately, while the likes of William Saliba and Gabriel Martinelli were unquestionably hits, every other signing is either up for debate or an outright flop.

Worse yet, the Spaniard broke the club’s transfer record in his second summer, bringing in Nicolas Pepe from LOSC Lille for a whopping £72m.

The Ivorian would eventually leave the North Londoners by mutual consent, having racked up a middling tally of 27 goals and 21 assists in 112 games for the club.

Other flops signed during that period include Lucas Torreira, Denis Suarez, Stephan Lichtsteiner and Sokratis Papastathopoulos.

Overall, while he did bring in two huge hits and a couple of players on the cusp of being hits, it would be fair to say that Emery didn’t have a great track record when it came to signing players at Arsenal, but what about Arteta?

Well, the former captain has been at the Emirates for far longer, so there are far more players to judge him on, and overall, you’d have to say he’s been more successful than his predecessor.

Yes, there have, of course, been plenty of flops such as Fabio Vieira, Albert Sambi Lokonga, Pablo Mari, Raheem Sterling and Willian, but there have been significantly more hits.

For example, Declan Rice, Jurrien Timber, Riccardo Calafiori, David Raya, Ben White, Gabriel Magalhães and Leandro Trossard are just some of the players who arguably get into almost every other team in the league.

Would Emery have eventually got better at identifying targets if he had been given more time and given in excess of £900m? Possibly, but we’ll never know.

With that said, one of the manager’s recent signings might be heading for the flop pile and feels like someone the club would have bought under the previous regime.

The Arteta signing who looks like he belongs in the Emery era

So far, most of Arsenal’s summer signings have looked good to great this season.

Martin Zubimendi has been pulling the strings from deep, Eberechi Eze got his North London Derby hat-trick, and Noni Madueke has been the most direct attacker in the team.

However, there is one player who arrived to plenty of fanfare, but has so far underwhelmed: Viktor Gyokeres.

Many fans and pundits alike saw the Swede as the goalscoring number nine that the Gunners had been crying out for, but so far, he has looked unconvincing, to say the least.

For example, in 18 appearances, the former Sporting CP “powerhouse” forward, as dubbed by analyst Ben Mattinson, has scored just six goals, and while that is not terrible, it’s not enough from a £63m striker.

Moreover, unlike Gabriel Jesus, or even Kai Havertz for that matter, the former Coventry City star doesn’t offer an awful lot off the ball, nor is he adept at helping craft chances.

In fact, this was something Sky Sports’ Gary Neville picked up on earlier in the season when he called him a “misfit” because, unlike a lot of his teammates, “he’s not technically amazing.”

This dual problem of not getting into goalscoring areas enough and also offering little in build-up play was on show against Brugge, when in 62 minutes of action, he failed to get in on the actiona, took just 12 touches and played four passes.

With all that said, there is clearly a player in there – we saw it for that brilliant goal against Leeds United earlier in the season – but if he doesn’t improve quickly, it feels like a matter of when and not if he falls to third in the pecking order.

Therefore, while it might sound harsh, Gyokeres is looking more like a signing Arsenal would have made under Emery than Arteta.

Rohl's own Maeda: Rangers begin talks to sign "very pacy" sensation

Will Rangers be busy in the January transfer window?

Well, new manager Danny Röhl will certainly demand that they are, having taken over a complete mess, following Russell Martin’s short but ill-fated tenure.

Well, after spending around £30m on 13 new recruits in the summer, Rangers reported annual losses of £14.8m in their latest accounts on Friday, despite seeing revenue increase to £94.1m, a club record.

Despite this, the club are still expected to be busy in the January transfer window, but sporting director Kevin Thelwell will be tasked with finding gems in the market, so has one already been identified?

Rangers' search for a new attacker

One of Rangers’ many issues this season so far has been a lack of attacking firepower.

Across all competitions, only captain James Tavernier and Djeidi Gassama have scored more than three goals, with youngster Findlay Curtis and Danilo the only players on three.

Thus, according to a report in Kazakhstan, Rangers are attempting to sign winger Galymzhan Kenzhebek.

They note that “negotiations began” between his representatives and the Glasgow-based giants, while Dundee United and Aberdeen as well as clubs in Slovakia, Russia, Greece are also in the race.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

So, could he soon become the first Kazakh player to represent Rangers, with Kazakhstan thereby becoming the 67th different nationality represented at Ibrox?

What Galymzhan Kenzhebek would bring to Rangers

Despite the fact he is only 22 years old, Galymzhan Kenzhebek has had something of a journeyman career to date.

After bouncing around various Kazakh clubs including Kairat Almaty, a name that’ll send a shudder down the spine of any Celtic fan, and then did something few of his compatriots do by venturing abroad, enjoying stints with Akritas Chlorakas in Cyprus and Košice in Slovakia.

He did return home in June, joining Yelimay Semey, for whom he was on fire, scoring six goals in his final nine Kazakh Premier League appearances before the season concluded on 26 October, firing his team up to fourth, thereby qualifying for a major UEFA competition for the first time ever.

However, by the time they play that historic Conference League qualifier in August, it seems unlikely that Kenzhebek will still call Semey home.

The Rangers Journal labels him a “very pacy and direct” winger, also praising his “goal-scoring instincts” and outlining that he is a high-volume winger who “loves to just get the ball and commit defenders”.

Meantime, Kai Watson was also impressed, noting that he is a “quality ball carrier” and could add quality to the Rangers squad at a pretty low price.

Well, as well as starring for his club, Kenzhebek has also made the breakthrough at international level this year too.

He scored his first-ever international goal at the Borisov Arena against Belarus in a friendly in June, before netting twice during a 4-0 demolition of Liechtenstein last month, thereby starting each of Kazakhstan’s last six World Cup qualifiers, including Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Belgium, a famous point, a match Nicolas Raskin also started.

So, could Kenzhebek replicate Daizen Maeda’s success from across the city?

Well, when the Japanese international arrived at Celtic from Yokohama F. Marinos on a bargain deal in January 2022, he was a complete unknown, but his skillset sounds very reminiscent to that of Kenzhebek, as a pacey forward who typically operates off the left flank.

While an “inconsistent finisher” right now in the view of Watson – much like the at-times erratic Maeda was when he arrived in Glasgow – Rangers will hope their potential new recruit can go on to eventually prove equally as clinical in Glasgow derbies.

So, while Kenzhebek is not proven at an elite level, he is seemingly worth the risk and, at a low fee, could prove to be a masterstroke in recruitment?

Hale End has given Arsenal a "future captain" who could surpass Wilshere

While Arsenal have signed their fair share of superstars, they’ve also got a proud history of producing them.

The likes of Tony Adams, David O’Leary, Ashley Cole, and Ray Parlour got their start at Hale End before going on to have careers that most players could only dream of.

Even today, the Gunners’ most important player and talisman, Bukayo Saka, is a product of the world-class academy, and Max Dowman looks like he could be the next one up.

However, not every highly rated prospect goes on to fulfil their potential, with Jack Wilshere perhaps being the most unfortunate example of that.

Fortunately, Mikel Arteta has another Hale Ender in his side who could go on to become the player Wilshere was supposed to be.

Wilshere's Arsenal career

Before the likes of Ethan Nwaneri and Dowman, Wilshere held the title of Arsenal’s youngest league debutant thanks to his appearance against Blackburn Rovers in September 2008.

The youngster would go on to make eight appearances that season and then seven in the first half of the next campaign before he was sent out on a short-term loan to Bolton Wanderers, where he scored and assisted a goal in 14 games.

With this vital experience, Arsène Wenger opted to give the teenage talent a significant role in the side the following season, which saw him make 49 appearances across all competitions, scoring two goals and providing nine assists.

It was this campaign that saw him deliver his famous performance against Pep Guardiola’s legendary Barcelona side, in which he practically single-handedly outplayed the Catalans’ midfield of Xavi, Andrés Iniesta, and Sergio Busquets.

It was around this time that the then-England manager compared the Hale Ender to a young Andrea Pirlo, so to say that there were sky-high expectations around him would be an understatement.

It’s easy to see why many thought the Englishman would be an absolute world-beater, though, as he had incredible close control, an eye for a pass, the ability to carry the ball through the middle of the park, and the perfect attitude.

However, not long after his iconic game against Barça, the Gunners’ great hope began to suffer injury after injury, and from the 11/12 season to 16/17, when he left North London, he missed a staggering 228 games for club and country.

Unfortunately, it was this inability to remain fit that utterly derailed Wilshere’s career, as he had all the ability someone would need to become one of the best midfielders in the world.

The only positive for Arsenal fans is that Arteta now has someone in his squad who could become the player Wilshere was supposed to be.

The Arsenal star who could fulfil Wilshere's promise

While fans might immediately think of Nwaneri or Dowman in this situation, the Hale Ender who could end up becoming the player Wilshere was supposed to be is actually Myles Lewis-Skelly.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Yes, the youngster is currently seen as a left-back in Arteta’s squad, and the second-choice one at that, but that is unlikely to be his long-term position.

After all, the Islington-born gem spent most of his time in the academy playing as a central or defensive midfielder, and when he does come into the first team, he does not overlap; he inverts in the central area.

Moreover, his best traits, which he shares with the former Gunners star, lend themselves to becoming a world-class central player.

For example, although he’s still relatively inexperienced, he has consistently demonstrated a brilliant eye for a pass and an exquisite left foot to match.

On top of that, in a similar fashion to Saka, the 19-year-old is far stronger than he appears and consistently wins physical duels against opposition players.

Finally, like Wilshere, the young dynamo is already an excellent carrier of the ball, and is unoutbaly among the best in the squad when it comes to doing it through a congested midfield.

This was on full display against Atlético Madrid last month, when he beat half the side to provide a perfect assist for Gabriel Martinelli to make 2-0.

In addition to all this, the Hale Ender also shares a similar approach and attitude towards games.

For example, his goal and celebration against Manchester City last term more than back up Declan Rice’s description of him as “fearless”, and when you combine that with everything else, it’s easy to see why club insider Hand of Arsenal has dubbed him a “future captain.”

Ultimately, there is still a long way to go, but thanks to his impressive ability, skill set and mentality, there is a strong chance Lewis-Skelly could become the player Wilshere was supposed to be.

Dodgers Adding Yet Another Dominant Pitcher to Their Staff

The Los Angeles Dodgers won the World Series last season and now they're continuing to win the offseason as they have agreed to a deal with another dominant pitcher.

Bob Nightengale reported Tuesday morning that the Dodgers have reached a tentative deal with closer Kirby Yates. The 37-year-old right-hander spent last season with Texas Rangers where he racked up 33 saves. He also had 85 strikeouts in just 61.2 innings of work.

This past Sunday the Dodgers added another stud reliever in Tanner Scott and a few days before that they signed Japanese phenom pitcher Roki Sasaki.

The Dodgers are clearly not messing around as they prepare to defend their title this season.

Smriti Mandhana, ranked No. 1 among batters in the ICC ODI rankings for women, has gone past Tahlia McGrath to move to No. 3 on the T20I table after her match-winning 62-ball 112 against England in the first match of the series. The other big mover after the match was Lauren Bell, the England quick who returned 3 for 27. "Unbelievable" £40k-a-week Newcastle ace may seal last-minute exit abroad

An “unbelievable” Newcastle United player may have played his final game for the club, with a move abroad possible before the league’s summer transfer window closes.

Potential debuts for Newcastle against Wolves

The Magpies return to Premier League action on Saturday afternoon, welcoming Wolves to St James’ Park and looking to kick their season into gear after a relatively slow start.

A frustrating summer window at Newcastle ended positively, despite losing Alexander Isak to Liverpool, with Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa arriving from VfB Stuttgart and Brentford respectively.

The Magpies’ two newest signings will both be vying for a start this weekend, and Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has talked up the idea of Woltemade leading the line.

“Eddie Howe has to start with Nick Woltemade, if not both him and Yoane Wissa together. Wissa hasn’t played a lot of football recently, so I’m not sure if he goes straight into the starting XI. But if you’re those two forwards, there is no better opportunity to get off the mark than facing Wolves at home!

“I always go with the logic that if the best team in the league wants to sign you, then you’re a good player. Bayern Munich wanted Woltemade, so he must know how to play! If him and Wissa can together get the goals scored by Isak last season, it’s a good transfer window for Newcastle in my opinion.”

Newcastle hero could leave before the weekend

Away from incoming signings, it looks as though Jamaal Lascelles could leave Newcastle on Friday, with reliable journalists Craig Hope and Simon Jones of The Daily Mail reporting that Trabzonspor are “exploring a deal” for the centre-back.

The Turkish transfer deadline day is Friday evening, so it would be a last-gasp piece of business if it does go through, with the 31-year-old only having a year remaining on his current deal.

A move away for Lascelles could make the most sense for all parties, considering it would allow him more regular playing time after dropping down the pecking order, as well as meaning Newcastle cash in on him instead of losing him on a free transfer.

If Lascelles does leave, he will be remembered as an excellent servant for the Magpies down the years, captaining them impressively earlier in his career and being showered with praise by Eddie Howe.

“He’s been an unbelievable captain for us. Captaincy doesn’t just exist on the pitch, it has to exist off the pitch. The two things are so intrinsically linked. A lot of our success last year wasn’t just down to the team, it came down to a group of players giving everything on and off the pitch.”
