Aaron Judge Injury: Three Ways Yankees Can Deal With Star’s Absence at Trade Deadline

Alarm bells are blaring in the Bronx after Aaron Judge was placed on the 10-day IL with a right flexor strain. While the Yankees were lucky to avoid further injury to their superstar outfielder, the injury couldn't have come at a worse time with the team currently owning MLB's second worst record since June 13.

As the team continues to flounder across virtually every facet of the game, they are also sliding down the standings and find themselves at risk of potentially missing out on the postseason altogether.

As it stands, the Yankees sit in second in the AL East and have fallen 6 1/2 games behind the division-leading Blue Jays. New York has lost seven of its last 10, enabling the third-place Red Sox to narrow the gap between them to just one game. The wild card race is tightening, too, as the Yankees are holding onto the best of the three AL wild card spots by a thread, with their lead shrinking to just one game.

Judge's injury will require some steady navigation from the front office as it reassesses its best steps at the trade deadline. Losing Judge for any period of time will likely see New York slip further down the standings, and they'll also be forced to decide whether Giancarlo Stanton is a viable option in right field given Judge's elbow injury and its impact on his ability to throw when he returns.

We'll take a look at a few courses of action for the Yankees at the trade deadline, discussing what their best moves are following the temporary absence of their leader and AL MVP candidate in Judge.

Remain Buyers, but Focus on Players With Multiple Years of Control

One option for the Yankees is to stick to their guns and remain aggressive at the trade deadline. However, there remains the reality that this team simply might not have what it takes to win a World Series, especially after Judge's injury. If that is the case, their best bet would be to still try to improve the roster this season, but pursue players that going to be pure rentals.

The Ryan McMahon trade is a prime example of that, having brought over a standout defensive third baseman and a left-handed hitter who is under contract for two more seasons. Even if this season falls flat, McMahon's steady glove will be a valuable asset at the hot corner for New York for the next two seasons.

Another name that fits this billing is Mitch Keller from the Pirates, who is under contract through 2028. He's one of the best arms available at the deadline and would command a hefty return, but he's been one of the few bright spots in Pittsburgh this season and could be a significant improvement to the Yankees' rotation both this year and for years to come.

Acquire a Defensive-Minded Outfielder

Minnesota Twins outfielder Harrison Bader played for the Yankees in 2023. / Brad Rempel-Imagn Images

With Judge set to return as a DH whenever he's activated from IL, Giancarlo Stanton will be forced to play the outfield for the first time in two years. With Jasson Dominguez already providing shoddy performances out in left field, the Yankees would realistically boast the worst defensive outfield in MLB if forced to start both Dominguez and Stanton.

One way to alleviate this would be to acquire a defensive-minded outfielder to put into a platoon of sorts with Stanton and Dominguez. A reunion with a player like Harrison Bader from the Twins would likely be a relatively inexpensive deal that would bring a versatile outfielder back to a team he already has some familiarity with. Bader has appeared at all three outfield positions in Minnesota this year, flexibility which could prove invaluable as the Yankees look to realign their defense in Judge's absence.

Business As Usual

There's certainly still a belief within the organization that the team can compete in 2025, and despite the Judge injury, it's possible the Yankees approach the trade deadline as they otherwise would've with a healthy Judge.

That would entail swinging big in order to buff up the pitching staff, both in the starting rotation and the bullpen. The Yankees have a team ERA of 6.16 over the last four weeks as their pitching staff has faltered massively. Bringing in a quality starter like the aforementioned Keller or one of Merrill Kelly or Zac Gallen from the Diamondbacks could help turn things around. They'd also need to bring in a reliable late-innings reliever, perhaps Pirates closer David Bednar or Ryan Helsley from the Cardinals, with Luke Weaver and Devin Williams also not living up to expectations.

The Judge injury certainly will force the front office to reassess, and precisely what direction the team intends to take is not yet clear, but there are a few options they can look to if they still want to be buyers over the next few days.

Not just Haaland: 110-touch Man City star is in the best form of his life

Manchester City continued to build this season as they defeated Villarreal in Spain to stretch to seven points from three Champions League outings this season.

Pep Guardiola’s side still aren’t at their rip-roaring best, but considering they are now nine matches undefeated across all competitions, they will take plenty of positives back to the Etihad before heading to Aston Villa for a Premier League clash on Sunday.

While the Citizens as a whole are not firing on all cylinders, they are certainly getting there. And when Erling Haaland is in such unstoppable, undefinably brilliant form, it raises the level of the unit and then some.

Erling Haaland's incredible Man City form continues

He can’t stop scoring. How many times have we heard that hackneyed football saying? Well, for Haaland, it’s a truism: the Norwegian striker truly cannot stop finding the back of the net, with his first-half goal against the Yellow Submarine extending his scoring streak to 12 consecutive fixtures for club and country.

With 18 goals from 14 recent Man City games, there’s no doubt that Guardiola wields one of the most devastating strikers in the world. But then we’ve all known that for a while.

Against Villarreal, he was at his trademark best. 12 touches, four successful passes. The 25-year-old lost all three duels (data via Sofascore).

He’s not an expansive striker, and he doesn’t need to be. Haaland is, quite simply, a world-class purveyor of goals.

He is fuelled by a hard-working and dynamic supporting cast, and there was one man in particular who continued his fine form at the Estadi de la Ceramica, surely enjoying his most colourful purple patch in a City shirt.

The Man City star in the form of his career

Guardiola once said Matheus Nunes is among the best players in the world.

He since amended that statement, but there’s no question that the sagacious Spaniard saw something special in the Portuguese talent and signed him when he could.

Refashioned from midfielder to right-back, Nunes has ebbed and flowed in a Manchester City shirt, but he’s been brilliant all season.

After impressing against Everton at the weekend, he put in a stunning showing against Villarreal, with reporter Simon Bajkowski noting he was “outplaying Villarreal every time” down the right flank.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

As per the norm, City dominated the possession, and they made their control count, with Nunes instrumental in the build-up, completing 97 of 99 attempted passes, taking 110 touches and recovering three loose balls. He won four of five duels.

The 27-year-old was handed an 8/10 match rating by the Daily Express, praised for the completeness of his performance. He defended well and combined neatly with Savinho throughout, showcasing a revival of concentration and rarely suffering the defensive lapses that had plagued him and kept him on the sidelines for much of his early Manchester career.

Though there will be some who continue to champion the arrival of a natural right-back in the future, Guardiola has always been an outside-the-box thinker, and he’s finally got Nunes playing to his tune.

Nunes is in the finest form of his Man City career, and with a continuation of this resurgence, he will only strengthen Pep’s fight for more silverware and the wider understanding that, no, in spite of Haaland’s brilliance, City are much more than a one-man team.

Newcastle are brewing the homegrown Elanga in 18-year-old "huge talent"

After two seasons of progress under Eddie Howe, Newcastle United’s 2025/26 campaign has been defined by frustration in the final third.

The Magpies have shown their familiar energy and work rate, but goals have been harder to come by, with the attack often lacking the sharpness that once made them such a threat.

Their defensive stability remains impressive, recording six clean sheets already this season, but that solidity has come at a cost.

The front line, rebuilt after Alexander Isak’s acrimonious exit, is still searching for fluency.

Even with flashes of promise from new signings like Nick Woltemade, Newcastle’s expected goals (xG) numbers have dipped compared to this stage last season – a sign of just how much they’re missing a consistent finisher.

Howe has acknowledged that his side are in transition offensively, and that rebuilding the attack will take time.

Yet, in an attempt to keep up with their rivals, the club are already planning for the future, investing heavily in talented young players who can shape the next generation.

One of those players has become emblematic of Newcastle’s mixed fortunes this season – a symbol of both the problems and the potential within their forward line.

Analysing Elanga's inconsistent start at Newcastle

When Anthony Elanga arrived on Tyneside, expectations were high.

The Swedish winger’s £55m move from Nottingham Forest was seen as a statement of intent – an injection of pace, directness, and work rate into Howe’s pressing system.

Early performances, however, mirrored the team’s inconsistency.

Elanga’s decision-making in the final third has often been questioned, with moments of brilliance offset by stretches of frustration.

His underlying metrics reflect that imbalance: averaging 3.78 progressive carries, but contributing just one assist in ten appearances.

Yet, there are clear signs of improvement. Elanga’s off-ball movement has evolved; he’s now making more runs into the box, and his pressing success rate has risen from last season.

These changes suggest a player adapting to Howe’s demands, refining his raw athleticism into something more structured.

Elanga’s renewed focus has coincided with Newcastle’s gradual tactical shift.

Howe has been experimenting with a rotating front three, giving Elanga license to switch wings or move inside – a role reminiscent of how Miguel Almirón was used during Newcastle’s Champions League campaign two seasons ago.

He might not yet be delivering the consistent end product expected of a starting winger, but Elanga’s improvement represents a microcosm of Newcastle’s broader attacking project: not perfect yet, but clearly heading in the right direction.

And while Elanga continues to evolve in the present, a different player might be the one who defines Newcastle’s future.

Newcastle's homegrown Elanga

At just 18 years old, Trevan Sanusi is already being spoken about as one of the brightest prospects to come through Newcastle’s academy in years.

A quick, direct winger with an eye for goal, Sanusi combines flair with intelligence – a player as comfortable taking on defenders as he is linking play in tight areas.

Born in Birmingham, he started at his hometown club Birmingham City before joining Newcastle in 2024, fending off interest from Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham, and Manchester United in the process.

That level of attention speaks volumes about his talent and potential ceiling.

Sanusi’s rise through the ranks has been steady and assured.

In The Pipeline

Football FanCast’s In the Pipeline series aims to uncover the very best youth players in world football.

He has represented England at every youth level up to U18, making six appearances for the U18s after debuting against Portugal in 2024.

For Newcastle, he made three Premier League 2 appearances this season before heading out on loan to FC Lorient in France for the 2025/26 campaign – a move designed to fast-track his development.

An unfortunate ankle sprain has delayed his debut in Ligue 1, but the experience of training in a new environment is already seen as valuable by Howe’s staff.

Prior to his loan, Sanusi made his first-team debut for Newcastle, coming on as a second-half substitute in the 69th minute against Bromley, showing glimpses of his pace and composure at senior level.

Described by NUFC Blog as a “huge talent,” Sanusi’s strengths lie in his acceleration, close control, and direct dribbling, all traits which Elanga has showcased in his early Newcastle days.

His ability to beat defenders one-on-one has also drawn comparisons to Allan Saint-Maximin in his pomp, though his decision-making is considered more mature.

Howe has already shown he’s willing to trust young players – Lewis Miley’s 26 first-team appearances in 2023/24 proved that – and Sanusi could be the next in line if he continues his trajectory.

For a Newcastle side searching for an attacking spark and long-term identity, Sanusi represents both a reminder and a promise: the club’s future won’t just be bought, it will be built.

If Elanga can rediscover his cutting edge and Sanusi fulfills his potential, Newcastle’s misfiring attack today could soon be their greatest strength tomorrow.

Howe can unleash the next Woltemade in Newcastle's 18-year-old "top talent"

Além de ajudar o clube em campo, o boliviano também deu uma força fora dele. Moreno fez um empréstimo à gestão de Sérgio Santos Rodrigues, quando o Cruzeiro estava com dificuldades para cumprir compromissos. Padres' Mason Miller Makes History With Perfectly Placed Fastball

Mason Miller is bringing the heat in the MLB playoffs.

On Wednesday, during Game 2 of the Padres' wild-card series against the Chicago Cubs, Miller was incredible and made some history in the process.

Miller pitched 1 1/3 innings and struck out the first five batters he faced before hitting Michael Busch's back foot with a wayward slider. One of his strikeout victims was Cubs catcher Carson Kelly, and it was ridiculous.

After Kelly fouled off two pitches, Miller threw a 104.5 mph fastball that was perfectly placed on the low-outside corner of the strike zone. Kelly could only watch it go past as home plate umpire Cory Blaser rang him up.

Video is below.

You can't throw a pitch any better than that.

Sarah Langs chimed in to note that the 104.5 mph fastball was the fastest pitch thrown in the postseason during the pitch tracking era, which began in 2008. It was the fourth-fastest pitch in the regular season or postseason during that time.

What makes Miller so impressive is that despite that incredible fastball, many think his slider is actually his best pitch. Through two games in the postseason, Miller has faced nine batters and struck out eight of them. He hasn't allowed a hit or a walk, just the HBP on Busch.

He's living up to the hype.

Federal Investigators Looking Into Connection Between MLBPA, Youth Baseball Company

Federal authorities are investigating a youth baseball company owned by the MLB Players Association, ESPN reported on Thursday.

The company, named Players Way, was founded by the MLBPA in 2019. In a statement to ESPN, MLBPA executive director Tony Clark said the aim of the company "isn't to become just another cog in the youth sports machinery, putting profits over players. It aims higher: to meet players where they are, teach the game the right way, and to foster lifelong lessons creating lifelong fans."

The federal investigation was launched by an anonymous whistleblower complaint in which Players Way was cited. According to ESPN the complaint accused director Clark of "self-dealing, misuse of resources and abuse of power at the union," and of nepotism in regards to his dealings with Players Way. Additionally, sources told ESPN investigators were asking about "whistleblower allegations of excessive union spending on international and domestic trips for Clark and other senior union executives."

The MLBPA decried the allegations as "without merit" and Clark, who has not been charged with a crime, denied them and said they are "baseless" in a statement to ESPN.

ESPN reports the events Players Way puts on are few and sparsely attended. Consequentially the company has generated "barely six figures in revenue" since its founding. The union has invested $3.9 million into the company, according to the MLBPA's public documents, but the union declined to explain how that money was spent. ESPN further reports the true number is closer to $10 million, and that those funds "largely paid the six-figure annual salaries of its executives and consultants," which include "a handful of former major leaguers, some of whom were simultaneously working other full-time jobs outside the union."

Multiple former union officials said Players Way operates with "no standard accounting practices" and "no annual budget circulated among senior finance officials." Clark was idenitifed as the driving force behind the union's involvement with the company, but a former official said there were no events, actitivies, or partnerships with other youth baseball companies. ESPN sources said Players Way "appeared to be a landing spot for Clark's loyalists," and few players in the union knew about it.

Federal investigators declined to comment. ESPN reports this investigation is part of a larger inquiry into the MLBPA's financial dealings with another company called OneTeam Partners from last spring.

Livvy Dunne Shares Sweet Photo With Paul Skenes Before Going to All-Star Game In Style

Pittsburgh Pirates ace Paul Skenes will be be just the fifth rookie in MLB history to start an All-Star Game in his debut season when he takes the mound Tuesday night in Arlington, Texas. The No. 1 pick in last year's draft has had a stellar first half of the season, racking up a 6-0 record with an ERA of 1.90.

The right-hander is heading to the game with his girlfriend, LSU gymnast Livvy Dunne, who was one of the stars of this year's SI Swimsuit edition. Dunne, who supported the Pirates' decision to pull Skenes from a possible no-hitter last week, shared a sweet photo of the couple before they boarded a private jet for Texas.

The power couple should get a lot of attention once they land in Arlington for the game. And judging from the way he's pitched all year, Skenes shouldn't have a problem rising to another challenge Tuesday night when he takes the mound against the American League.

Gibbs-White would love him: Nottingham Forest looking to re-sign £20m star

Nottingham Forest have begun to see an excellent upturn in their form since Sean Dyche took over the club. He’s won three from his first six games, including Saturday’s exceptional 3-0 win over Liverpool at Anfield. It has certainly been a positive start to his tenure.

Indeed, there have been some excellent individual performances since the Englishman became the Forest manager. Morgan Gibbs-White has been one of the standouts, with three goals in his last three Premier League games. The likes of Nicolo Savona and Igor Jesus have also been in impressive form.

With his side in excellent form, Dyche could well turn to the transfer market as he looks to add more quality to the Forest squad.

The latest on Nottingham Forest's transfer plans

It seems like the East Midlands side are looking to add depth in midfield. Reports in the past few days suggest they are plotting a move for talented Belgian midfielder Nathan De Cat, although the likes of Bayern Munich are challengers for the 17-year-old’s signature.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

However, if that move does not materialise, Forest are also considering Everton midfielder and former loanee James Garner.

According to a report from Football Insider, the club are “looking at him” and could make a move, with his contract up in 18 months.

However, this will not be an easy deal to do. There are a host of Premier League clubs interested in the former Manchester United man, with Newcastle United, Aston Villa and West Ham United all keeping tabs.

As for the price, he could cost upwards of £20m, according to a report in mid-November.

Why Garner would be a good signing for Forest

24-year-old Garner has been pivotal for the Toffees this season. He has excelled as a full-back and in the middle of the park, with Everton gaffer David Moyes relying on that versatility several times this season.

Indeed, Garner has played 11 times in the Premier League, operating in different areas of the pitch. He’s played three games as a left-back, scoring a thunderbolt in one of those, seven times in the heart of the midfield, and once at right-back.

Of course, a move to Forest would see Garner return to the club. He played a historic part during his first stint, a loan from Man United.

He played 69 times in Garribaldi Red, scoring and assisting 18 times, and helping Forest return to the Premier League. Statman Dave described him as a “special” player during his time at the club.

If Garner was to make a move back to the City Ground, and Dyche utilised him in midfield, he might well form a strong partnership with Gibbs-White. Unsurprisingly, the England international is a key player under Forest’s new boss.

The former Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder has been in excellent form under Dyche, with the third of his three goals in the top flight coming last weekend at Anfield. However, he has been a consistent performer in Garibaldi Red his whole time at the club.

He’s recently brought up his 50th goal contribution for the club, and has 22 goals and 31 assists in 135 games. Gibbs-White excels as a number 10, but there are times when he needs to play deeper to help Forest out defensively.

The signing of Garner, however, could change that. The Everton man is someone who could play with Gibbs-White in midfield and take some of the defensive responsibility off the Forest number 10. His defensive numbers are impressive, averaging four tackles and interceptions per game this season, for example.

This sort of defensive nous could make Gibbs-White unplayable for Dyche’s side. With a player like Garner behind him, and Elliot Anderson of course, it might mean he is less shackled defensively, thus being able to be more effective going forward.

This midfield dynamic could hugely benefit Forest, and make them a more potent team in attack. In this market, £20m is a nominal fee for a player who knows the club and can benefit the side.

Dodgers Pitcher Clayton Kershaw Will Retire From MLB After 2025 Season

Longtime Dodgers star Clayton Kershaw is officially hanging up his glove as the team announced on Thursday that the 11-time All-Star and three-time Cy Young winner will retire after the 2025 season.

Kershaw will make his final regular season start on Friday, Sept. 19 when the Dodgers host the Giants at home.

The 37-year-old spent his entire career in Los Angeles since 2008 when the Dodgers first called him up. The Dodgers gave Kershaw a one-year deal back in February to ensure that he would remain with the only club he's ever known. And, now that it was his final season, it was even more fitting for him to be with the Dodgers.

Kershaw's 18th season has definitely been memorable. He made history by joining the elite 3,000 strikeout club, something only 20 pitchers in total have done. MLB commissioner Rob Manfred named Kershaw a "Legend Pick" at this year's All-Star Game, too. Through 20 appearances before his final start on Friday, Kershaw posted a 3.53 ERA with 71 strikeouts and 40 earned runs on him over 102 innings pitched.

The ace started his season on the 60-day IL after he missed most of the Dodgers' 2024 World Series campaign due to left knee and left toe injuries—both of which required surgery. He returned in mid-May and has remained healthy.

It's possible Friday won't be Kershaw's final MLB start, as the Dodgers are expected to clinch a playoff spot for the 13th season in a row. In Kershaw's 18 seasons, 14 of those saw the Dodgers competing in the postseason. He helped lead the Dodgers to their 2020 World Series championship title.
