Leeds news: Paul Robinson raves about Rodrigo De Paul’s potential arrival

Even though Leeds United have essentially surprised the footballing world by registering their interest in Paris Saint-Germain’s Julian Draxler, it’s actually a different player that might be closer to Elland Road at the moment.

Lately, there have been more than just whispers of Marcelo Bielsa chasing Udinese’s Rodrigo De Paul and it seems that the Argentine could indeed be heading to the Premier League.

Of course, provided that Juventus don’t decide to pull the trigger themselves, as was reported earlier as well. The creative midfielder is still waiting for the Turin squad to make up their mind and if they decide to go for him, it’s unlikely the Whites win the race in the end.

However, bringing him in would be an outstanding piece of business according to Paul Robinson. He talked exclusively with MOT Leeds News and discussed the playmaker’s potential arrival.

Here’s what he had to say on the matter: “Hernandez has still got time at Leeds left in him, but the way he plays and what Bielsa wants from that position, it’s important to bring someone else into the club.

“Rodrigo De Paul can play across all of the midfield positions but he’s capable of unlocking doors like Hernandez. He’s a clever player, he can see a pass going forward and it just shows you the level the club are at that they’re going for players like this.

“They’re not afraid to be paying £20m-£30m for these sorts of players. It shows that Leeds are back in the big time and I have no doubt that footballers like De Paul will come to Leeds because of Bielsa.”

Verdict

Of course, eventually replacing Pablo Hernandez should definitely be at the very top of Bielsa’s priorities and with De Paul, he could get an almost perfect alternative.

Robinson believes this signing shows ambition and intent, and it really does feel that way.

Total Duds: Jermaine Pennant was worth nothing to Wolves after loan spell – Opinion

This article forms part of our Total Duds feature series, which is where Football Transfer Tavern takes a look at how a player has fared since being signed or sold, using statistical figures and statements from pundits to prove how bad a deal the club got.

When Jermaine Pennant arrived at Wolverhampton Wanderers on a loan deal from Stoke City on the 12th October 2012, perhaps a lot more was expected of him given that he had played for the likes of Arsenal, Leeds United, Liverpool and Portsmouth.

The West Midlands outfit’s chief executive at the time Jez Moxey even lauded the signing when it happened, describing him as a ‘high-quality’ addition, as per the BBC.

However, the 37-year old was arguably far from that as he only managed to score one goal and make just two assists after featuring in just 15 games in the EFL Championship (via returning back to Stoke after less than three months at Molineux.

Between the period that he was at Wolves, the Englishman’s market value dropped from £3.15 million to £2.25 million, further highlighting his lack of worth at the club.

For a man that was once worth £9.45 million during his time at Anfield, his market value continued to plummet until he retired after further spells at Wigan Athletic and Bury.

The ex-winger made a total of 408 appearances at club level in all competitions in his career, scoring 21 goals and assisting 52 times, as he also managed to win an FA Cup during his time with the Gunners, according to Transfermarkt.

WWFC were eventually relegated from the Championship in the 2012/13 season, finishing second from bottom on 51 points in the table, and it is perhaps safe to say that the former England youth international was no worth to them during his short spell.

Liverpool: Reds’ Kalidou Koulibaly pursuit complicated by Man United transfer offer

Liverpool have suffered a blow in the race to sign Kalidou Koulibaly as Manchester United have made a £71m bid for the Napoli man.

The Reds have been continually linked with an interest in the Senegal international and were even reported to have made a bid for the central defender (Corriere dello Mezzogiorno via TEAMtalk).

Now, the Old Trafford outfit have put their cards on the table according to Sky Sports Italia (via The Daily Mail), with them offering £71m for the 28-year-old.

The Red Devils already spent a lot of money last summer trying to boost their defence, parting with £80m for Harry Maguire, but that has still seen them concede 30 goals throughout the campaign in the Premier League – if they want to catch the Reds at the top, they will need to improve.

Jurgen Klopp’s men, meanwhile, have the best defensive record in the whole division, having shipped only 21 league goals; and Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk appear to have struck up a strong understanding, with the Reds keeping nine clean sheets in their last 12 Premier League matches with the two at centre-back.

£71m is already a huge amount for Koulibaly and if Napoli are holding out for £89m, then maybe the Reds are better off letting United take him. This news should not scare them into making a move as the Premier League leaders are already quite strong defensively.

Liverpool fans, would it be a big blow for the Reds if Koulibaly were to sign for Man United? Let us know what you think by commenting below!

Newcastle fans react to Martin Samuel’s takeover update

Newcastle United’s takeover by a Saudi-backed consortium is edging closer and closer by the day and Martin Samuel of the Daily Mail has fueled further encouragement over the weekend with his comments on the Sunday Supplement.

And it has left many fans at St James’ Park going nuts as a result.

He said: “I don’t see any official objection to [the takeover] whatsoever” before adding: “I began in a sceptical position, but I think this one is genuine. This one goes through. It works as a business proposition.”

Sky Sports believe the deal to take the reigns from Mike Ashley is nearing completion after PCP Capital Partners paid a £17m deposit and exchanged contracts last week.

Man Utd fans want Mauricio Pochettino to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

So despite Ole Gunnar Solskjaer appearing to turn things around at Manchester United, the rumours about managers potentially replacing him haven’t gone away.

The Red Devils endured a difficult start to the campaign, including surprising defeats to sides like Crystal Palace and Newcastle, but have racked up five wins in their last six games across all competitions.

However, The Sun claim that along with Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, United are all keen on now-former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino taking charge at the club. The report revealed that the trio of sides were keeping their fingers crossed hoping the north Londoners end up sacking him, so as to avoid having to pay them a compensation fee, and since it was published Tottenham have indeed done just that.

After hearing the reports, United fans took to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the Argentine potentially taking over the reins at Old Trafford.

Many Red Devils supporters insisted it would be a great decision to bring Pochettino to Manchester, and revealed that he could well be the man to finally deliver them some titles.

Check out some of the reaction of United fans – who we assume are delighted that Pochettino’s now officially got the chop – below:

James Ward-Prowse faces criticism from the Southampton fans

A number of Southampton fans have slammed the performance of James Ward-Prowse in Saturday afternoon’s Premier League clash with Everton.

The Saints recovered from an early setback to level the scores in the 50th minute, with Danny Ings registering against the Merseyside outfit.

Richarlison came up with the winner for the visitors in the 75th minute, though, meaning that Southampton have now lost their last four matches in all competitions.

And a number of the fans took their frustrations out on James Ward-Prowse.

The 25-year-old played the full 90 minutes against Marco Silva’s team, and WhoScored have him down as completing 30 of his 35 passes.

Ward-Prowse only managed one shot, though, and did not make a single challenge during the entire match, which will be a concern to head coach Ralph Hasenhuttl.

It is certainly a difficult time to be a Southampton fan, and a selection of their reaction to Ward-Prowse’s performance against the Toffees can be seen below:

Inter Milan would get missing link in midfield with Man United’s Nemanja Matic

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Manchester United’s Nemanja Matic has once again been linked with a move away from Old Trafford. The Telegraph claim that the 31-year-old midfielder could be heading to Italy and one of the possible destinations is Inter Milan. From the Nerazzurri point of view, this transfer makes a lot of sense.

What’s the word, then?

Currently, Matic is not really enjoying himself over in the Premier League.

Obviously, the Red Devils are not really doing so well as a team at the moment, but the experienced veteran is struggling on an individual level.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer prefers his younger duo of Scott McTominay and Fred so the Serbian has fallen behind the aforementioned duo in the pecking order, which resulted in only 340 minutes of game time across all competitions in 2019/20.

But if the report from The Telegraph is anything to go by, he just might be heading to Italy in the not so distant future.

Both Milan teams were interested before, as the same source states, and a potential transfer would also depend on Manchester United’s ability to find a suitable replacement prior to any deal being struck.

And with the player’s contract running out next summer, it’s the perfect opportunity for Inter to strike.

A much-needed back-up

It would be foolish to think Matic would just slide into Antonio Conte’s gala XI but looking into their squad in more detail, a certain Marcelo Brozovic is on his own in that defensive-midfield position.

Strictly speaking, the Croat is the only natural pivot in the whole team and seeing how Matic has spent the vast majority of his career in that position, according to the games Transfermarkt have in their database, he would be more than a worthy relief option for the Italians.

Not to mention that they could use his experience since their oldest midfielder is actually Borja Valero, but other than him, Matic would represent the next most experienced guy in the middle of the park.

And it’s not like he has lost all of his ability.

Inter Milan of all teams could definitely use him, especially if they have the aspirations for big things this season.

In the limited game time he’s been given so far, Matic has averaged one shot per game, 80% passing accuracy and two tackles per game in the 2019/20 Premier League campaign, which could suggest he still has plenty to give.

Finally, with the Serb’s contract also running out in the summer, a discount of sorts is almost guaranteed.

It’s an opportunity Conte shouldn’t miss.
