A number of Southampton fans have slammed the performance of James Ward-Prowse in Saturday afternoon’s Premier League clash with Everton.

The Saints recovered from an early setback to level the scores in the 50th minute, with Danny Ings registering against the Merseyside outfit.

Richarlison came up with the winner for the visitors in the 75th minute, though, meaning that Southampton have now lost their last four matches in all competitions.

And a number of the fans took their frustrations out on James Ward-Prowse.

The 25-year-old played the full 90 minutes against Marco Silva’s team, and WhoScored have him down as completing 30 of his 35 passes.

Ward-Prowse only managed one shot, though, and did not make a single challenge during the entire match, which will be a concern to head coach Ralph Hasenhuttl.

Manchester United’s Nemanja Matic has once again been linked with a move away from Old Trafford. The Telegraph claim that the 31-year-old midfielder could be heading to Italy and one of the possible destinations is Inter Milan. From the Nerazzurri point of view, this transfer makes a lot of sense.

What’s the word, then?

Currently, Matic is not really enjoying himself over in the Premier League.

Obviously, the Red Devils are not really doing so well as a team at the moment, but the experienced veteran is struggling on an individual level.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer prefers his younger duo of Scott McTominay and Fred so the Serbian has fallen behind the aforementioned duo in the pecking order, which resulted in only 340 minutes of game time across all competitions in 2019/20.

But if the report from The Telegraph is anything to go by, he just might be heading to Italy in the not so distant future.

Both Milan teams were interested before, as the same source states, and a potential transfer would also depend on Manchester United’s ability to find a suitable replacement prior to any deal being struck.

And with the player’s contract running out next summer, it’s the perfect opportunity for Inter to strike.

A much-needed back-up

It would be foolish to think Matic would just slide into Antonio Conte’s gala XI but looking into their squad in more detail, a certain Marcelo Brozovic is on his own in that defensive-midfield position.

Strictly speaking, the Croat is the only natural pivot in the whole team and seeing how Matic has spent the vast majority of his career in that position, according to the games Transfermarkt have in their database, he would be more than a worthy relief option for the Italians.

Not to mention that they could use his experience since their oldest midfielder is actually Borja Valero, but other than him, Matic would represent the next most experienced guy in the middle of the park.

And it’s not like he has lost all of his ability.

Inter Milan of all teams could definitely use him, especially if they have the aspirations for big things this season.

In the limited game time he’s been given so far, Matic has averaged one shot per game, 80% passing accuracy and two tackles per game in the 2019/20 Premier League campaign, which could suggest he still has plenty to give.

Finally, with the Serb’s contract also running out in the summer, a discount of sorts is almost guaranteed.

It’s an opportunity Conte shouldn’t miss.

A few eyebrows were raised when Marcelo Bielsa was given the FIFA Fair Play award last month.

The Leeds United manager has come under fire from his peers for his supposed unsporting conduct when Spygate occurred, and the club was consequently handed a £200,000 fine for the incident, which Bielsa paid off himself.

However, when you look at it closely, it has to be said that the 64-year-old was a worthy recipient of the Fair Play award, and his comments in the media this week back that up even further.

The Argentine spoke about the attitude that he tries to instil in his players.

“I always say to the players that we have to avoid fouling, try to accept all the decisions or mistakes of the referees, even if we think it is good or bad,” he said.

“They have to let the referee decide as he interprets the situation. We have to adapt to the referee’s decision. We don’t have to talk with the opponent or show bad behaviour away from the play.”

The former Chile manager seemingly wants the beautiful game to stay beautiful, and he wants his players to respect the referee’s decision whether they agree with it or not.

This just shows the type of manager Bielsa is. He has the utmost respect for the sport, and the last thing he’d want is to ruin proceedings due to a lack of sportsmanship from some of his players.

Spygate was a rare anomaly but just look at how he reacted when Pontus Jansson attempted to stop Aston Villa from scoring last season.

He wasn’t knowingly bending the rules by what happened with Derby last term and he held his hands up and explained that he was unaware of the culture. The fact that he’s now said this shows that he more than deserved his Fair Play award.

We’re 11 years on from the introduction of the Respect Campaign from the FA, and some managers in the British game seemingly still don’t get it.

Therefore, for a man who has been managing in England for just over a year to immediately try to instil this type of attitude into his players is brilliant to see, and hopefully, these comments resonate with managers at all levels – from the Premier League all the way down to grassroots.

Long gone are the days of Don Revie’s ‘Dirty Leeds’ where the wider footballing community hated the Whites due to their underhanded tactics.

While that crop of stars may have ignored Brian Clough’s instructions to throw all their medals in the bin due to their questionable style, this new generation seem to be well on board with Bielsa’s fair play mantra as they rank 18th in the Championship discipline table.

It’s difficult to make it at Real Madrid.

That much we can all agree on. After all, many big names have tried and failed and many more will surely follow in the future.

At the moment, Thibaut Courtois is in danger of becoming one of those stars that arrived as big reinforcements and a step in the right direction only to trip over their own feet and flop.

With that being said, Real Madrid’s reported interest in buying a potential replacement for the former Chelsea star doesn’t really come as a surprise.

El Desmarque recently came out with a story that Unai Simon of Athletic Bilbao is being studied by Florentino Perez and co. as a possible replacement for their out of favour Belgian ace.

Seemingly, the Galacticos expect much more from the 27-year-old between the sticks and even though nothing is set in stone just yet, he is walking on a tight rope.

But would that really be the right way to go for the Whites?

After all, it very much seems like we haven’t really seen the best out of Courtois but it could yet come his way.

His stellar display against Galatasaray in a do or die scenario – when he recorded three vital saves for the team – is definitely something that can support this argument.

It must be remembered that we are talking about a goalie that was a big name at both Chelsea and Atletico Madrid and still is when playing for his national side, Belgium.

Maybe the pressure of donning the royal white got to him and the fans’ constant outcries and critiques were a bit too much but those things have nothing to do with his ability.

It’s all in the head, isn’t it?

For that reason, parting ways with him should not really be on the agenda for Los Blancos and Zinedine Zidane should put some faith into his man.

With West Brom leading the Championship heading into the international break, the spotlight will quite rightly be on them – will they keep it up going into the festive period, or will they falter?

Their fate may well be out of their control, especially if they continue to dazzle on the pitch – as weird as that sounds.

Grady Diangana has been an integral part of the exciting, pacy, and possession-based brand of football that manager Slaven Bilic wants to play.

The winger has scored four goals while laying on three assists in just six starts so far this campaign, per WhoScored. On two occasions his impact has practically won Albion the game – think of Luton away and more recently against Huddersfield.

He is currently the joint-top goalscorer amongst the squad, but given he is only on loan, a huge problem may arise come January.

The 21-year-old’s rich vein of form could result in his parent club, West Ham, wanting him to contribute to their Premier League exploits this season – that has to be the reason why they installed a recall clause as part of the deal.

If that did happen, it would be an absolutely killer blow to their title hopes considering the impact Diangana has had already in just six starts.

Young Kyle Edwards would have to step up as fellow Albion winger Oliver Burke was sent out on loan while Chris Willock seems to only be an option for the U23 squad as he is yet to feature in the league despite joining from Benfica for a temporary stint of his own.

Edwards has scored just one goal in ten appearances, so there’s nothing to suggest he could fill Diangana’s void.

It would likely also cause unrest amongst the Hawthorns faithful considering a year ago the very same thing happened with Harvey Barnes.

The Leicester City ace scored nine goals and provided six assists in 26 appearances, per WhoScored, before the Foxes recalled him to feature for the senior side.

Ultimately, the point of these loan deals has paid off, but it does still leave West Brom hanging in the mire.

With sporting and technical director Luke Dowling putting a two-year timeframe on the club returning to the top-flight, losing Diangana would only put a dent on such hopes.

Whether the Baggies would have gained promotion with Barnes still at the club post-January remains to be seen, but you’d imagine he would have undoubtedly helped their cause.

Having arrived from Hull in what now looks like one of the best bargain buys in recent memory, Andrew Robertson has firmly established himself as one of the best left-backs in the Premier League.

The 25-year-old enjoyed an incredible campaign last year for Liverpool, racking up 13 assists from 48 games across all competitions.

International duty with Scotland however, has been far less productive in terms of his assists output. The full-back has yet to register a single set-up in any of his 31 caps, and produced a disappointing showing for Steve Clarke’s side on Friday night.

The Scotland captain was unable to prevent the team slipping to a damning 2-1 loss at home to Russia in EURO 2020 qualifying, and fans of the national side certainly didn’t think he did enough to help matters.

Taking to Twitter to vent their frustrations, Scottish supporters revealed their anger at seeing Robertson perform consistently at a high level for Liverpool, but be so abysmal when on international duty.

Some even questioned whether the full-back has ever had a good game for the side, and insisted he is “never a captain in a million years”.

Kieran Tierney has made his goodbyes after signing for Arsenal, but Celtic fans aren’t quite sure how to feel.

Tierney made the switch to the Premier League side just before the English transfer deadline closed on Thursday, and has penned a poignant message to the Hoops supporters after his departure.

Tierney came through the youth academy at Parkhead and won an incredible 11 trophies in the green and white hoops.

The 22-year-old quickly established himself as not just the club’s first-choice left-back but as a fan-favourite upon breaking through in 2015. A fan himself, this departure clearly hurt him as much as it hurt some of the supporters.

There are a few supporters wishing nothing but the best for the Scotland international as he makes the switch to North London. Others, though, would’ve liked him to stay, particularly with the prospect of ten-in-a-row so close.

It’s a transfer that was always bound to leave emotions high as he was, and to many still is, in their hearts as a Celtic hero.
