LFC fans frustrated at Carragher claim

A number of Liverpool fans have been left baffled by Jamie Carragher’s claim that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain could play at right-back next season.

Trent Alexander-Arnold has nailed down the right-back spot at Anfield in recent years, becoming one of the best players in the world in his position.

It has been claimed by The Athletic’s James Pearce that Neco Williams could leave Liverpool for £10m this summer, but a replacement isn’t expected to come in should he move on.

That means Joe Gomez could fill in there on occasion, but someone else who has been tipped to do a job there is Oxlade-Chamberlain.

The 27-year-old continues to have an up-and-down Liverpool career, with injuries often halting his progress, but Carragher has suggested on Twitter that Jurgen Klopp should try him out in the role, saying: “Could the Ox not play there? Got the pace & engine, he’ll be fine on the ball & used to being in crossing areas after spending so long there as a winger.”

Liverpool fans react to Carragher claim

Carragher’s comments haven’t gone down too well with some Reds fans on Twitter, though, with Oxlade-Chamberlain only playing in defence on very sporadic occasions during his career – here are some of the best reactions to the former Liverpool centre-back’s suggestion:

“Or, I know it’s a stretch and might not be the best idea, sign an actual RB to be TAA’s understudy?”

Gerrard handed huge Ianis Hagi boost

Steven Gerrard has been handed a significant boost at Ibrox this week as Rangers star Ianis Hagi has been left out of Romania’s squad for the Olympic Games this summer, which should mean that the winger is available for the start of the new club season.

Rangers were reportedly set to prevent their player from representing his country at the Olympics in Tokyo this summer due to the clash with the Champions League qualifiers.

Whilst Gerrard’s side had no obligation to allow Hagi to leave, there was perhaps a worry among some Ger fans that it would cause a dispute between the 22-year-old and the club at a time when he is attracting interest from abroad.

The likes of Lazio and Sevilla are said to be interested in the former Genk man, who impressed in his first full season as a Rangers player, winning the club’s 2020/21 Young Player of the Season award for his performances.

However, fortunately for Gerrard, Hagi has now been left out of Mirel Radoi’s Romania squad, which should hopefully bring an end to any dispute between Rangers and the winger as he should now be fully focused on the season ahead at Ibrox.

The Gers kick off their Premiership title defence with a game against Livingston on 31 July, whilst their first pre-season friendly sees them take on Partick Thistle on Monday evening, so it is good news for Gerrard that Hagi will be available for selection.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-rangers-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Rangers transfer rumours and news!”]

Last season saw the winger contribute an impressive eight goals and 15 assists in all competitions for the Light Blues, so his creativity will surely be key for Rangers next season if they are to retain the Premiership title and challenge in the Champions League.

Gerrard is certainly a big fan of the youngster, as he sang his praises in the 2019/20 season during his initial loan spell at Ibrox, saying: “Ianis is an outstanding talent and that stage was made for him.”

Therefore, it is a huge boost that the Romanian will now be available for Rangers rather than travelling to Tokyo for the Olympics, and Gers fans will be hoping to see him carry over his form from last season into the new campaign.

Celtic: Griffiths speaks with Postecoglou

Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths has spoken with new Hoops boss Ange Postecoglou ahead of a possible new Parkhead deal.

The Lowdown: Griffiths’ Celtic history

The 30-year-old has been at Celtic Park for over seven years now and has enjoyed plenty of success in Glasgow.

Griffiths, who at this moment in time is out of contract at the end of the month, has scored 123 goals in 262 Hoops appearances, while also chipping in with 51 assists.

He started just nine games last season, though, appearing to fall out of favour under Neil Lennon and John Kennedy.

Griffiths has won 13 major honours with Celtic since 2014, and it seems as if his time at Parkhead may not be up just yet.

The Latest: Forward speaks out

As reported by BBC, Griffiths, on £15,000-a-week at Parkhead, revealed he has spoken with Postecoglou, who has made it clear to him he is keen for the striker to remain at the club.

“To me, it feels like a fresh start with the new manager, whether he brings in new staff or not.

“He phoned me last week and said ‘I am keen to work with you, I know what you can do’. He wants me to get back to the player I once was. We are looking for a deal and hopefully it can be done in the next few days.”

The Verdict: A good move by Postecoglou?

Keeping hold of Griffiths could well be a smart move by Postecoglou. Even though he may not be a regular starter week in week out, he knows just what it takes to succeed at Celtic and still knows where the back of the net is.

It looks set to be a summer rebuild at Celtic Park. Scott Brown has left for Aberdeen, Kristoffer Ajer has shared his intentions to move on, Odsonne Edouard is expected to depart and Ryan Christie has been linked with a move to Monaco.

That could be five experienced players out of the door, so hanging onto an experienced first-team member like Griffiths could be a shrewd decision in Postecoglou’s first campaign in the Parkhead dugout.

Liverpool linked with Philippe Coutinho

Liverpool have reportedly been offered the chance to re-sign Philippe Coutinho from Barcelona this summer.

What’s the story?

According to Spanish outlet AS, Barca are hoping to send the 28-year-old back to Anfield over the coming months in order to avoid paying the extra £40 million they still owe for the attacking midfielder.

Coutinho joined the Catalan giants in a deal worth up to £142m back in January 2018, but after failing to rediscover his best form in Spain, a return to Liverpool could be on the cards if Barca get their wish.

Klopp must stay clear

The Brazilian international’s quality has never been in doubt. An impressive tally of 54 goals and 45 assists in 201 appearances during his five-year stay in England meant few eyebrows were raised when Barca paid such an astronomical fee to secure his signature.

However, things have not worked out the way Coutinho would have hoped in the subsequent years.

A below-par 18 months at the Camp Nou saw the South American shipped out to Bayern Munich on a loan deal, where he enjoyed a relatively successful 2019/20 campaign.

Eleven goals and nine assists saw Coutinho contribute to a remarkable treble with Bayern, and he even bagged two goals in a humiliating 8-2 thrashing of his parent club in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Despite his mini-renaissance in Bavaria, Coutinho couldn’t carry that form back to Barca, and a serious injury picked up in December saw the ex-Liverpool star make just eight league starts all season throughout 2020/21.

His underwhelming campaign appears to be the final straw for the La Liga outfit’s hierarchy, who are desperate to get the Brazilian’s huge wages off their books.

Reports suggest that Barca are keen to return Coutinho to Jurgen Klopp’s charges this summer as they seek to avoid another substantial payout for their transfer flop, and the German manager must avoid the temptation to bring back a player once lauded by the current Liverpool captain, Jordan Henderson.

“He’s a fantastic player, produces magical things at crucial times in the game, and you saw that. He’s been brilliant since he’s come back in,” said Henderson, but it’s been a while since his former teammate has been at his scintillating best.

It’s often said in football that you should never go back, and Liverpool should listen to that old cliche on this occasion.

Klopp needs to spend wisely in the upcoming transfer window in order to return the Merseyside giants to the summit of English football, and taking a gamble on Coutinho is hardly an advisable strategy given his recent injury record and his lack of success in Spain.

-Vou procurar agarrar a oportunidade.

Newcastle must sell Florian Lejeune

Newcastle should consider letting Florian Lejeune leave this summer as a major transfer update emerges on his future at St James’ Park.

What’s the story?

Writing earlier in May for The Athletic, Chris Waugh said: “With Lejeune turning 30 later this month, there has been no indication yet that Newcastle will look to extend his deal and, as things stand, perversely, he actually appears to be the most likely defender to leave. Alaves, who are fighting relegation, are keen to keep him if they survive, and both Lejeune and Bruce may feel it is best for the Frenchman to move on.”

Now, The Shields Gazette claim that the centre-back could be moved on as part of an effort to raise some much-needed funds for Steve Bruce, “with the Frenchman likely to be sold heading into the final year of his Magpies’ contract”.

He was a Rafa favourite

Praised by Waugh as someone who’s got “everything”, the journalist added: “The Frenchman, who is both comfortable in possession and an excellent reader of the game, is arguably Newcastle’s best all-round defender.”

And that belief is something that was reflected by former Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez, who was a big fan of the man he brought to St James’ Park.

In fact, speaking back in September 2018, he said: “Then, in the months after he came back, he settled down because he is strong mentally, and then he was passing the ball and giving confidence to the team and all the players around. He became a very important player for us.

“Florian has been a big miss for us in terms of what he means for us as a crucial member of the team. The style of football he brings and helps us to adapt to is something we have lost.”

The £40k-a-week earning ace’s departure would bring in some much-needed cash, especially with the recent update that Bruce could only have around £10m to work with this summer – an absolute pittance when you consider the kinds of money that get bandied about in transfer windows these days.

The Magpies would then be able to reinvest that into players who they need, perhaps even helping with putting together a package to prise Joe Willock away from Arsenal on a permanent basis.

Whatever the case, it may be the perfect time for Newcastle to wave goodbye to the centre-back this summer.

Meanwhile, Steve Bruce could create a formidable Newcastle duo by signing this “unique talent”…

Manchester City linked with Fabian Ruiz

Manchester City have been linked with Napoli midfielder Fabian Ruiz recently and he could form a superb partnership with Kevin De Bruyne in Pep Guardiola’s midfield should he make the move to the Etihad Stadium this summer.

According to Don Balon, City are in talks with the Spain international after making contact with Napoli ahead of a potential summer move.

The “spectacular” 25-year-old – as hailed by Quique Setien, his former boss at Real Betis – has made 127 appearances for the Serie A side since joining from the Andalucian outfit in 2018, contributed 15 goals and 10 assists in his three years in Italy.

He has continued as a regular at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium this season, making 32 appearances in Serie A, with three goals and one assist to his name, which has helped him average an impressive 6.97 rating from WhoScored.

This is enough to rank him as the fifth-best performer in Gennaro Gattuso’s squad this season, which emphasises that he will surely be highly valued at Napoli this summer and that they won’t be keen to lose him.

Transfermarkt currently values the Spaniard at £39.6m and he is contracted until 2023, which suggests that any potential deal for Ruiz this summer would not be cheap. However, his style of play suggests that he would be a perfect fit in Guardiola’s side next season, and he could compliment De Bruyne excellently in midfield.

According to WhoScored, the 25-year-old’s main strengths are passing, through balls, key passes, long shots and concentration, which immediately suggests that he would adapt well to the demands of playing in a Guardiola team.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-manchester-city-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Manchester City transfer rumours and news!”]

Ruiz’s has registered a 90.5% pass accuracy in the Italian top flight this season, which would rank him as the ninth-best passer in Guardiola’s side this term had he averaged the same rate in the Premier League.

It seems that the Spanish midfielder could fulfil a similar role to Ilkay Gundogan at the Etihad, in the sense that he could help City retain possession and allow De Bruyne to take up a more attacking role, whilst his 1.8 tackles per game in Serie A also demonstrates that he can be solid defensively when required.

[freshpress-quiz id=“577936″]

Therefore, City sporting director Txiki Begiristain should definitely consider a move for Ruiz this summer, as the 25-year-old could prove to be a superb addition to Guardiola’s side next season.

Tottenham could turn to Gareth Southgate

According to a report by Dean Jones, writing for Eurosport, Tottenham and chairman Daniel Levy could turn to England national team coach Gareth Southgate as a genuine target if they do not land prime managerial target Julian Nagelsmann.

Southgate, who guided England to the 2018 World Cup semi-finals in what was a memorable summer, has now emerged as a possible candidate for the Lilywhites as the list of possible appointments grows larger.

Spurs could turn to Southgate

The likes of Nagelsmann, Brendan Rodgers and Erik ten Hag are also viewed within Spurs as potential contenders for the job (Eurosport), but Jones believes that Southgate is likely to be targeted if a move for Nagelsmann fails.

Indeed, the factor motivating Spurs’ relatively new interest in the England boss is apparently the 50-year-old’s relationship with superstar striker Harry Kane. It is understood that the pair get on very well, which could benefit Tottenham during a time where they want to convince the striker to stay in north London.

Transfer Tavern take

Described as a manager possessing a ‘ruthless’ streak by defender John Stones (Evening Standard), Southgate has also earned praise from Spurs legend Paul Gascoigne, who spoke of his pride in the Three Lions boss back in 2018 (Sky Sports).

Gazza also lauded him for getting England to play football ‘the way it should be played’ – and we believe he is another credible dark horse among many.

Both him and Brighton manager Graham Potter have emerged recently as potentially eyebrow-raising names linked with the Tottenham gig, but both men should be considered as Nagelsmann alternatives given their achievements over the last few seasons.
