Pakistan could not handle the pressure

A cricket expert, by definition, knows more about the game than a follower of it

Omar Kureishi21-Aug-2002A cricket expert, by definition, knows more about the game than a follower of it. But cricket is a great leveller for when it comes to pure luck, no amount of expertise can account for it.Inzamam-ul-Haq was on course to see Pakistan home in its crucial match against South Africa. He hit Justin Ontong for a six and momentarily got off-balance and his leg touched one of the wickets, the lightest of touches, and one bail was dislodged. As freak dismissals go, this was the mother of them. But the South Africans can argue that Inzamam was dropped by Allan Donald off Nicky Boje, the most dolly of catches and, therefore, had used up his luck. It is this element of luck that guides the destiny of cricket matches and, looking on the dark side, makes hell for bookies!Pakistan crashed out of the Morocco Cup because, in the end, it couldn’t handle the pressure in a low scoring match and proved yet again that it is a team that has not learnt the fine art of chasing runs. I don’t think that Saeed Anwar should have been dropped and to ask Shoaib Malik to open the innings was asking too much of him in a pressure-cooker situation.Sending Shahid Afridi at number three was the right decision to offset the loss of Imran Nazir who needs a crash course in shot selection. Shahid not only took Pakistan to a stone’s throw from victory but set up Pakistan to get a bonus point. There is no more glorious sight in cricket than Shahid blazing away and clearly he got under the skin of Jacques Kallis who was taken for plenty and his ‘verbals’, his bad-mouthing, were ignored by Shahid and he never took the smile of contentment off his face and there was something of the Tom and Jerry about the thrashing of Kallis by Shahid. To dispel the impression that this was something personal, Shahid also hit Allan Donald for a six. When he was out, one shot too many, he had given Pakistan the platform to waltz the runs required, 105 with seven wickets in hand and plenty of overs remaining. It was from here that Pakistan botched it up. And the good fortune that South Africa had in the manner of Inzamam’s wicket. It was a slow paced wicket but not an impossible track. Pakistan should have opted for grafting rather than stroke-making but it must be admitted that the South Africans bowled brilliantly and the fielding was, as always menacing. A fielding side can exert its own pressure and no one does it better than South Africa.Pakistan had bowled magnificently and had reduced South Africa to 49 for five and Wasim Akram, in particular, was superb. Perhaps, Pakistan should have gone for the kill and kept Wasim on. His coming off after five overs, allowed South Africa to breathe again. But this is hindsight. The bowlers did a fine job in restricting South Africa to 196. Once again, it was the batting that left Pakistan stranded, missing the bus to the final.Much praise has been heaped on Tangiers as a venue and the climate has been particularly praised and also an abundant supply of exotic vegetables. There is no doubt that a wonderful job has been done. But missing has been the buzz that a full house brings to a cricket match. Even John Gielgud and Laurence Olivier would have looked lesser actors had they played to an empty theatre. What we got at Tangiers was ‘made for television’ cricket. Millions watch cricket on television but they too miss the buzz and the production becomes flat and two-dimensional. I don’t think comparisons with Sharjah are apt.At Sharjah and indeed UAE, there is a very large expatriate population. This is not the case in Morroco. It is going to be a very long haul before the stadium at Tangiers will be bustling with avid and exciting fans getting themselves hoarse, cheering for a team of their choice. But it can be argued that sometimes there are fewer people at Test matches than there were at Tangiers. These are early days. The conflict of business interest between the players and the ICC threatens to devalue the Champion’s Trophy in Sri Lanka. The ICC has once again butted in, head first. There are many players who have long-term contracts with sponsors. It is not a case of players versus country. The ICC too is trying to protect sponsors. So it’s money versus money. If some player decides to take the ICC to court, the ICC will lose, as the MCC lost against Kerry Packer. And whatever little authority that the ICC has still got, will go out of the window. Have the ICC lawyers not heard of restraint of trade’? Anyhow, one hopes it will be sorted out and well before the World Cup starts next year and there are only a few months to go.The Packer players too were accused of being unpatriotic. We now know that that was a load of rubbish. Banned, at first, they were reinstated and the cricket establishment ended with egg on its face.

2nd Americas Cricket Championships day six round-up

In what was probably the game of the tournament thus far, at Longchamps, the United States pulled off a thrilling last over victory over a spirited Bermuda to win by 1 wicket off the last ball of the match

Grant Dugmore16-Mar-2002USA WIN THRILLER WITH TITLE IN THEIR SIGHTSIn what was probably the game of the tournament thus far, at Longchamps, the United States pulled off a thrilling last over victory over a spirited Bermuda to win by 1 wicket off the last ball of the match.Bermuda batted first and compiled 140 for 6 in their allotted 40 overs, reduced from 50 due to a delayed start due to early morning rain. Oliver Pitcher top-scored with 43 from 110 balls, while opening bat Aaron Adams made 36. Joy Zinto proved to be the most miserly of the five USA bowlers used, conceding only 12 runs in his 8 overs with one wicket. The Bermudan bowling proved just as effective, and the USA struggled to take control in their run chase of what was a relatively modest target. It was left to tailenders Zinto and Narine and a 10th wicket partnership of 9 runs to see the US team home. Earlier Khan, with 33, Hoilett, 31, and Bacchus with 33, all made important contributions to the cause.Herbie Bascome bowled superbly for figures of 8 overs, 3 for 19, and was well backed up by Durham, 3 for 31, and Leverock, 2 for 21. This win for the USA, coupled with the Caymans loss against Canada, leaves the US clear at the top of the table with only one game remaining, a vital clash against the Cayman Islands, again at Longchamps.BAHAMAS SHOCK HOST NATION FOR HISTORIC WINThe Bahamas pulled off a huge upset at Hurlingham with a 19 run victory over hosts Argentina. Armstrong and Atkinson were the core batsmen to with half-centuries to help the Americas Cup minnows to a respectable 187 all out in 48,1 overs. The two contrasting innings, Armstrong 50 in 90 balls, and Atkinson, 59 in 66 balls, combined for a crucial 72 run fourth wicket partnership.Lucas Paterlini was again the pick of the Argentine bowlers, with 3 for 19 in 9,1 overs, while left-arm spinner Hernan Pereyra took 3 for 38.A disastrous start for Argentina, with star batsman Matias Paterlini dismissed by Garcia Blair off the first ball of the Argentine reply, and the innings stopped and started as the hosts made heavy weather of the run chase to eventually be all out for 148 in 48,5 overs. A lot of starts, with 6 players getting well into double figures but not continuing on as needed. The Ferguson brothers, Alejandro and Paul, both made 28, and Irigoyen 24.Blair ended with 2 for 27, Armstrong 3 for 33 and Bennette 2 for 23, to clinch a historic win against Associate opposition for the Bahamas in their first tournament at this level.CANADA WIN GIVES THEM HOPE OF TITLE DEFENCECanada posted an important 25 run victory over the Cayman Islands to give themselves an outside chance of retaining their Americas Cup title at Belgrano. In a match reduced to 42 overs per side due to early rain, Canada batted first and posted 198 for 9, with Maraj top-scoring with exactly 50 off 86 balls. Samad continued his good form with the bat with a quick 33 in one ball less. For the Caymans, Bovell was again outstanding with 3 for 47, as was Michael Wight with 3 for 32.Due to their slow over-rate, the Caymans innings was reduced to 38 overs. Things looked good with their total at 49 for 1 after 8 overs. Then two unneccessary run outs, and two wickets in two balls by left-arm spinner Kevin Sandher rocked the Caymans to see them slide to 61 for 5 in the 12th over, and eventually reach 173 for 8 in 38 overs.Pearson Best top-scored with 35, Bovell made 25, and David Wight was undefeated on 26. For Canada, the pick of the bowlers was captain De Groot with 3 for 40, while Sandher finished with 2 for 17.All set for the final day of the 2002 Americas Cup, with three teams in with a chance of winning. The USA need to beat the Cayman Islands at Longchamps to win the tournament outright, while should the Caymans win, and Canada beat the Bahamas at Hurlingham, there will be a three-way tie at the top of the table, and most probably the teams will have to be separated by net run rate. In the other game, Argentina will be looking for their first win of the tournament against Bermuda at Belgrano. All games on this final day start at 09h30.

Western Australia Cricket Association19-Feb-2002The WACA ground’s Farley stand is scheduled to be completely demolished later this week, on either Friday or Saturday, when Brajkovich Demolition Contractors bring in the Excavator Machine to take down the remaining walls and roof of the veteran grand stand. The WACA ground’s Farley stand is being demolished as part of the West Australian Cricket Association’s (WACA) refurbishment of the WACA ground. The essence of the refurbishment project is to transform the WACA ground into a stadium that primarily embraces the cricket spectator, and also provides the ability to accommodate other sporting events and a permanent winter tenant.Part of the WACA’s refurbishment plan involves; reducing the size of the ground by 15m on both the east and west sides of the ground, to bring spectators closer to the action; extending the grassed seating and shaded areas, so as to revitalise the ground’s family atmosphere and; raking the perimeter seating around the ground so as to provide better quality spectator viewing from an elevated position.WACA Chief Executive Officer Kath White said, The final demolition of the Farley has taken some time, but finally, the old warhorse will be disappearing. Much of the internal material was salvaged so bits of the Farley stand will find their way into various structures around WA.

Sem Walter, Cássio começou no time.

Ex-Rangers star claims Leeds could attract Ryan Kent - Exclusive

Since being given a chance by Steven Gerrard at Rangers, firstly on loan and then permanently, Ryan Kent has proved himself to be one of the best wingers in the Scottish Premiership but he may be pulled back to the Premier League by Leeds United, according to former Rangers defender Michael Ball.

Kent was brought to Ibrox from Liverpool when Gerrard took up his first managerial role as he knew him through his time at Anfield as an academy coach, and Kent has paid back his faith in him by helping Rangers win the title and reach over 100 points in a brilliant invincible campaign.

However, his performances have started to attract interest from Premier League clubs, mainly Leeds, who also tried to sign him last summer before they decided to make what now looks to be a smart addition in Raphinha.

Despite improving season after season, Rangers may struggle to keep hold of one of their star players this summer as Kent appears to have the ability to perform in the Premier League, something Ball expects to be a cause for concern as he told The Transfer Tavern:

“When you have a good year, you want to capitalise and get better terms and Leeds have shown an interest and it’s a huge pull to come back into the Premier League.”

Kent has gone about his business and proved why Liverpool had him on their books having netted 26 goals and 27 assists in 128 games for the Scottish league champions.

After Raphinha picked up an injury during the back end of this season Bielsa may want to add more strength in depth to his attacking lineup, especially if reports are to be believed and that Tyler Roberts is set to be on the move this summer.

John Percy drops Villa transfer update on Buendia

The Telegraph’s John Percy has dropped a major transfer update involving Aston Villa’s pursuit of Norwich star Emi Buendia.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent weeks and months have suggested that Buendia is a target for Dean Smith’s side in the upcoming summer transfer window, and there’s now a fresh update that should have fans of the club absolutely buzzing.

Percy has revealed that Villa are going head to head with fellow Premier League side Arsenal in the race to sign the Argentine, but it appears it’s the Midlands club who are beginning to steal a march.

It’s claimed that while there has been no formal bid made yet, Villa are keen on getting their business done early, and are understood to be preparing an offer for the Canaries play-maker.

Fans will be buzzing

Given Buendia’s performances in the Championship this season, it’s no surprise to see that Villa are after him, and why Lee Hendrie is desperate for him to join the club this summer.

The former Villa ace told This Is Futbol: “I think a big club will definitely try and take him. I know you can say he’s done it in the Championship, but you could say that about (Said) Benrahma, you could say that about Ollie Watkins.

“I feel that Buendia, I mean we’ve seen him in a very good Norwich side in the Championship, I feel in a Villa side… wow. If I could say or had a big say in bringing players in, he’s the one on top of my list that I would bring into Aston Villa.”

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/villa-dean-smith-transfer-gossip-rumours-news-premier-league-buendia-berge-mcneil-trezeguet-villa-park” title=”Read the latest Villa transfer rumours and news!”]

He provided a whopping 15 goals and 17 assists last season in the Championship, winning the division’s player of the year award and being dubbed as “very special”  by Norwich defender Ben Gibson.

Villa fans will be absolutely buzzing with the news that the club are keen to get their business done as soon as possible, as it will allow Smith to integrate any new signings into pre-season and ensure they can hit the ground running at Villa Park.

Percy’s update is also significant in the sense that Villa are keen to get ahead of the competition, and making a move early to sneak ahead of Arsenal to sign Buendia is the kind of proactive transfer dealing that will stand the club in good stead and will please fans.

Meanwhile, Villa are eyeing up a potential Buendia alternative…

CPFC: Fans react to Loftus-Cheek links

Crystal Palace are reportedly leading the chase for Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek, with the transfer update inevitably having plenty of Palace supporters talking on social media.

According to a report from TEAMtalk, the Eagles are long-term admirers of the 25-year-old, with Aston Villa also in the mix.

Loftus-Cheek isn’t thought to be in Chelsea’s long-term plans, and even though his Stamford Bridge deal still has more than three years left to run, it seems as if a summer exit could be on the cards. A spate of injuries have not helped the England international to truly establish himself at the Blues.

The attacking midfielder has been a regular under Scott Parker at Fulham this season, making 28 appearances for the Cottagers in all competitions. Fulham would like to keep Loftus-Cheek at Craven Cottage, but their chances of signing the Chelsea man depend on their precarious Premier League status.

Palace fans react

@CPFCtransfersHQ shared the update on Loftus-Cheek on Twitter on Saturday morning, and here is what these Eagles fans had to say in reply, with one believing that Eagles sporting director Dougie Freedman could try to pull it off.

Gerrard should unleash Kelly at Ibrox

Rangers youngster Stephen Kelly has spent this season on loan at Ross County and is winning a lot of plaudits for his displays, so Steven Gerrard should consider unleashing him at Ibrox next season.

The 20-year-old joined John Hughes’ side on loan for the season last summer and has been a regular in the side throughout the 2020/21 campaign, making 25 appearances in all competitions, contributing two assists in that time.

The Scotland under-21 international, who is a product of Rangers’ youth academy, has previously spent time on loan with Ayr United in the Championship, where he also impressed, managing six goals and four assists in 33 appearances.

The young midfielder has shown this season that he can cut it at the top level of Scottish football and he could prove to be an important part of Gerrard’s squad next season, especially if we see fellow midfielder Glen Kamara depart as a result of the interest being shown in him by several Premier League clubs.

The Athletic’s Jordan Campbell recently sat down with Ross County manager John Hughes, who waxed lyrical about Kelly’s talent, comparing him to Rangers regular Steven Davis.

The Staggies boss said: “He’s as brave as a lion and has the courage to get on the ball. He’s my type of player: someone who wants the ball and keeps it ticking over. He understands the game. He’ll look at you and say, ‘I don’t quite get that’. He knows if he grasps and implements it, he’ll be better for it.”

Meanwhile, former Ayr manager Mark Kerr was also full of praise for the young midfielder after his excellent performances last season, saying: “I love him to bits. He’s a manager’s dream and (was) one of the best professionals at the club. He wants to be the best that he can be.”

Therefore, after proving himself in both the Championship and the Premiership on loan in the past two seasons, the next natural step for Kelly would surely be to build on the one senior appearance he has managed at Rangers so far in his career by establishing himself in Gerrard’s first team next season.

[freshpress-quiz id=“593776”]

Certainly, if his performances over the last two seasons are anything to go by, it looks as if Kelly could have a bright future at Ibrox.
