Leeds news: Bielsa suffers a big blow as Rodrigo De Paul prefers to join Juventus

If some of the more recent reports are to be believed, Leeds United have taken an interest in Udinese’s playmaker, Rodrigo De Paul. Of course, with Marcelo Bielsa’s crew making a grand comeback to the Premier League, the Whites will need to reinforce their squad.

Some business has already been done as Rodrigo joined from Valencia just recently but it seems Bielsa is still not fully satisfied with the outlook of his squad.

But according to a fresh update from Messaggero Venuto, De Paul himself dreams of actually moving to Juventus and would prefer that transfer over the switch to Elland Road.

The 26-year-old’s stance might indeed put Bielsa’s plan into jeopardy as the Bianconeri clearly have an advantage over their rivals if this is really to become a battle between the two.

De Paul himself is a creative spark and a very talented playmaker so it doesn’t surprise that Udinese are already preparing for his eventual departure. Still, it will be up to him to choose his next destination.

As thing currently stand, Leeds and Juventus could be going head to head to acquire his services in the ongoing summer transfer window. But what chance does Bielsa have against Andrea Pirlo and his crew if that’s really the case?

Only time will tell.

Verdict

While it might be too early to tell if Bielsa should throw in the towel and start focusing on alternative targets, it does seem like Leeds can’t exactly go toe to toe with a giant of European football that is Juventus.

However, the latest reports don’t exactly say how interested the Bianconeri are in the 26-year-old playmaker. If Pirlo decides to go all in, there’s little the Whites can do.

But if they are not insisting on signing him, maybe there’s an opening the newly-promoted Premier League side can explore.

Everton: Fans question former striker’s market value

Plenty of Everton fans have given their thoughts on how much former striker Duncan Ferguson would be worth in today’s transfer market.

Ferguson initially arrived at Goodison Park in October 1994 from Scottish Premier League side Rangers, and he would immediately make an impact at the club, prompting a five-year stay at the club.

Netting an impressive 65 goals in 253 games for the Toffees, Ferguson is fondly admired by their fans for his time spent at the club, and he continues to be a presence on Merseyside as he now has a coaching role which also saw him become caretaker manager earlier this season.

After spending time away from Everton with Newcastle United, the Scottish striker would return to Merseyside in a transfer worth £3.75m which would see him spend a further six years at the club before calling time on his playing career in 2006.

With transfer fees hitting the multi-million pound mark nowadays, Ferguson’s deal at the time of his return to Everton would have been seen as expensive, but fans have now given their opinion on the former player’s worth – if he was playing today.

Reacting to the question posed by Twitter account @thetoffees_com, fans discussed the striker’s worth…

Everton fans, what do you think? Let us know below…

Crystal Palace: Club might struggle to bring in transfer target Loren Moron

Crystal Palace have been linked with forward Loren Moron, via HITC, however the latest reports around the player suggest he might not be going anywhere in the summer.

The earlier reports by HITC suggested he was valued at around £25 million, with fellow Premier League sides Tottenham Hotpsur as well as Southampton interested in the attacker, but he was uncertain about leaving his current club Real Betis who play in La Liga.

The recent news, again from HITC, according to Marca, doesn’t suggest any change in the player’s mind, in fact, it goes on to say Betis want to give the 26 year-old a new contract to hopefully block a potential transfer.

However if the Eagles could manage to persuade the Spaniard to join them, possibly by offering bonuses or a big wage, then it would strengthen their squad massively.

Currently this season, Moron has nine goals and two assists, and this would rank him as top goal scorer if he was at the South London side, via WhoScored. He also averages 1.6 shots per game, which would rank him joint-highest at Palace alongside Jordan Ayew.

With Palace having only netted 26 times this term, which is the second least goals scored in the league this season, via SofaScore, they need as much strength up front as possible. With players like Christian Benteke only scoring five Premier League goals in three seasons, per Transfermarkt, and struggling to find the back of the net, the club should be going all out for a striker like Moron.

Palace fans, what are your thoughts on the lack of goals at the club? Comment below!

Sheffield United fans were annoyed despite George Baldock’s goal

When George Baldock scored Sheffield United’s equaliser against Tottenham Hotspur, he didn’t bother to really celebrate it.It was the 26-year-old’s first-ever Premier League goal, having scored at every other level between the Championship and National League, so it should have been a special moment, especially as it was a well-worked strike that had brought the Blades level. However, VAR overshadowed the occasion, as he was made to wait for confirmation of the goal, just minutes after David McGoldrick was robbed of his season’s first:

While Blades fans were happy to see their team back on level terms, they were still furious with the decision that went against them, as well as how long it took for the goal to be confirmed.

VAR has been a big talking point so far this season in the Premier League, due to the controversy that has often surrounded it, which is the case with this game.

Many at Sheffield United feel they have been robbed of a win, as well as the enjoyment of getting their equaliser.

Barcelona’s Sergio Busquets is slowly getting a smaller role in the team

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Barcelona thumped Sevilla 4-0 on Sunday but one player was surprisingly excluded from the starting lineup, and it just might suggest his time as one of the Catalans’ key men is slowly coming to an end.

On the chalkboard

Sergio Busquets has been a key player at Barcelona ever since he was promoted to the senior team back in the summer of 2008.

A La Masia product through and through, the Octopus of Badia represented the true values of the Catalan giants and year upon year, he featured in all of their major moments.

After all, the 31-year-old already has 544 appearances for the club, winning 31 senior trophies, and while he certainly has more fuel in the tank, there are some early signs indicating that he might not have as big of a role in the future as he used to have.

The end of an era

Saying that Busquets’ career at Barcelona is at the very end would be a bit too much but we’re certainly getting into the latter stages of it, at the very least.

And sure, saying that about a 31-year-old player is not that big of a surprise but considering we’re talking about Busquets of all people, it does sound a bit strange.

But the proof is already here for everyone to see.

Watch Lionel Messi and Gareth Bale answer the internet’s weirdest questions in the video below…

Just the other night, the Spaniard was benched once again, his third omission from the starting lineup in the eight games that Barcelona have played so far in the 2019/20 La Liga season.

Not to mention that he remained on the bench for the entirety of their curtain-raiser against Athletic Bilbao and the clash against Granada. So far, he has tallied a total of 449 minutes in the opening eight games of the campaign while he had a total of 592 this time last season.

Furthermore, he was not once left on the bench in the 35 games played last season; he’s already been named among the substitutes twice this term.

Maybe it was the arrivals of Frenkie de Jong and the emergence of Arthur Melo or maybe it’s just time catching up with the 31-year-old midfielder, but it seems that he is bound to enjoy a much smaller role in the squad this season.

It remains to be seen if that will be to Barca’s detriment or not.

Barcelona’s Clement Lenglet was their unsung hero in Villarreal clash

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Barcelona collected a 2-1 victory over Villarreal on Tuesday evening but they had their defence to thank for picking up all three points.

On the chalkboard

Barcelona’s attack is rarely ever questioned. After all, when you have Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Antoine Griezmann in the team, goals are bound to come sooner rather than later.

But the narrative of the ongoing 2019/20 La Liga season has very much been centred around their defence.

Watch Spanish Football Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

For all the attacking potential, the Blaugrana are rather lacking at the other end of the pitch and that is already showing in their results. After six games played in the new campaign, Barcelona have already conceded a total of ten goals – eight from open play and two from penalty kicks.

The unsung hero

Modern football rarely allows defenders to collect all the praise.

Sure, the recent emergence of Virgil van Dijk at Liverpool might help shift the tides just a little bit but generally speaking, we’re still pretty far away from that.

This only further amplifies Clement Lenglet’s contribution to Barca against the Yellow Submarine.

The 24-year-old Frenchman successfully won his duel with Villarreal’s Gerard Moreno. Moreno has already scored five goals in six appearances in La Liga so far, making Lenglet’s task that much more important.

Blaugrana’s centre-back registered two tackles, two interceptions, one clearance and three blocked shots on the night, matching Moreno’s one dribble and two key passes. He also made sure that Moreno deployed no crosses and managed no shots on target.

Of course, the two did not battle each other exclusively throughout the game but Lenglet’s presence helped nullify Moreno’s usual contribution.

The biggest proof of that might lie in the fact the Spaniard was substituted off in the 67th minute as Villarreal were in need of fresh and more impactful legs.

The goals from Antoine Griezmann and Arthur Melo may have given Barcelona the lead but Lenglet was vital in ensuring they got over the line at Camp Nou.

Real Madrid’s Toni Kroos lost a crucial battle in midfield vs Paris Saint-Germain

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Real Madrid began their 2019/20 Champions League campaign in the worst possible way, with a 3-0 defeat to PSG in France.

The key battle in the game, of course, came in midfield – but Real lost it.

On the chalkboard

It’s true that it was Angel Di Maria who ran the show for Paris Saint-Germain as they hosted the Galacticos in the City of Lights. After all, it was the 31-year-old Argentine winger who scored two goals on the night, completely dominating his opposition.

But how exactly did it come to that? Bad defending? Perhaps. After all, that’s one of the problems this Real Madrid team is facing this season.

They still haven’t been able to keep a clean sheet in the ongoing campaign. But perhaps more concerning was the lack of control in midfield.

Toni Kroos, Los Blancos’ midfield general, lost his battle with ex-Everton star Idrissa Gueye and it immediately meant Real struggled to gain a foothold in the game.

A brilliant display

Zidane really needed his 29-year-old midfielder to best Gueye but it just didn’t happen.

Statistically, the Senegal ace edged out the German in almost all categories, establishing dominance in the centre of the pitch.

He registered 93.2% passing accuracy, while also notching three key passes, three dribbles and three tackles. By all accounts, he was a huge presence in both attack and defence, which can’t really be said for Kroos. The German recorded 93.3% passing accuracy, one key pass, two dribbles and two tackles.

Even though it wasn’t really a horrible night for Kroos, either, it was just not enough to stop Gueye’s dominance in the centre of the pitch.

Of course, Real Madrid were without Luka Modric, who is still recovering from his injury, and that meant that the German simply had to step up.

But he didn’t, he was outmatched, and his team paid for it.
