Dyche may have found Everton’s own Duran in "powerful" secret weapon

It’s been an interesting start to the Premier League season for Everton this year.

Sean Dyche’s side have picked up nine points in as many games, and while there have been some woeful collapses along the way, things are starting to look up, as demonstrated by last night’s hard-fought draw.

The Toffees were not anywhere near their best and, on another day, may well have lost, but as Dyche sides have so often in the past, they just about stayed in the contest and got their rewards with a late equaliser.

They’re not going to fire the Merseysiders to a European place or anything like that, but the club’s attackers are more than good enough to keep them out of a drawn-out relegation scrap, and as last night showed, they may now have their own Jhon Duran-esque secret weapon.

Everton's most important attackers

Okay, so before we get to this new secret weapon, let’s look at a couple of Everton’s most important attackers, starting with the incredible Dwight McNeil.

It’s been an interesting couple of years for the 24-year-old following his £20m move from Burnley, as in his first two campaigns with the club, he could only muster up a mediocre return of ten goals and ten assists in 80 games, equating to an average of a goal involvement once every four games.

However, this season has seen the Rochdale-born dynamo explode, and in his 11 appearances so far, he’s scored four goals and provided three assists, meaning his average has shot up to a goal involvement every 1.57 games, and making his injury-induced-substitution against the Cottagers particularly worrying.

Now, when it comes to the club’s second most important attacker at present, there are two players fans might put forward: Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Illiman Ndiaye. So far, the former has scored two goals and provided one assist in nine centre-forward appearances, totalling 767 minutes, while the latter has scored three goals in 11 appearances, mainly off the left, totalling 825 minutes.

So, when it comes to picking between the pair, the Englishman has a slightly better return of a goal involvement every 255 minutes to the Frenchman’s average of one every 275 minutes, but has so from an area that should see him in more positions to score and assist goals.

Either way, both Calvert-Lewin and Ndiaye are undeniably crucial to Dyche’s starting lineup, and now it looks like one of their fellow attackers could have a vital role to play off the bench, akin to Aston Villa’s Duran.

Why Beto could become Everton's Duran

Yes, the attacker we are talking about is none other than last summer’s £30m man Beto, and no, before the pitchforks come out, we are not trying to say that the Portuguese ace is as good, nor as promising as Duran, that would be ever so slightly reactionary.

Instead, we are merely suggesting that, based on how he has been used by Dyche, the manager’s preference to start Calvert-Lewin ahead of him, and the impact he had last night, he could be used similarly to the Villa ace as a super-sub.

Now, while the Colombian international has been rightfully grabbing headlines all season for his brilliant displays, most of them have come off the bench, and with Ollie Watkins leading the line, it’ll likely stay that way.

Jhon Duran and Leon Bailey

For example, of his 13 appearances for Unai Emery’s side, only two have been starts, and of the seven goals he has scored, only two have come in games he’s started, highlighting that his biggest strength at the moment is being an impact player.

This same tactic could be Beto’s route back into the team as well, as despite coming on for just nine minutes against Fulham, he was the one to head home the equaliser, and given the “powerful” striker’s 6 foot 4 height, as dubbed by Dyche, he could develop into a mightily effective impact player.

The manager could turn to him in moments like last night to come on and use his physical presence to disrupt opposing defenders, and even if he’ll likely never prove as prolific as Duran, he could become a go-to option off the bench for Dyche, just like the Colombian is for Emery.

National media throw dig at star for joining West Ham in scathing verdict

A national media outlet has thrown shade at one West Ham United star after his decision to join the club, delivering a scathing verdict on his transfer to east London.

West Ham endure lacklustre start under Lopetegui

Following a run of zero wins in all competitions since late August, new manager Julen Lopetegui is already under a degree of pressure.

West Ham draw fresh plans to sign £40m star after Lopetegui identifies him

The Spaniard has pinpointed him as a potential new recruit.

ByEmilio Galantini Oct 3, 2024

The Spaniard has been at the centre of an alleged bust-up with star winger Mohammed Kudus as well, which certainly won’t help matters, but this has since been downplayed by media sources close to the club.

“Club sources insist the ‘bust up’ between Kudus and Lopetegui at Brentford has been exaggerated, explaining both men are very passionate about improving things at the club and quickly resolved their differences amicably on Monday,” said Sean Whetstone on X.

Mohammed Kudus for West Ham

“The incident was first mentioned by Tony Gale during commentary of the West Ham v Brentford game followed by a cryptic tweet by KUMB revealing rumours of a bust-up at half-time. Whatever the two said to each other in the heat of the moment, it appears they have both put it behind them.”

West Ham’s only two victories of the campaign – a 2-0 win at Crystal Palace in the Premier League and a 1-0 EFL Cup victory against Bournemouth – came weeks ago, with Lopetegui since overseeing dropped points against Fulham and Brentford whilst also watching his side get hammered by Chelsea, Liverpool and Man City.

The Irons are still prepared to back Lopetegui, as it is still very early days after all. West Ham are planning a move for Omar Marmoush, according to reports, with the Eintracht Frankfurt striker among many targets for technical director Tim Steidten as the transfer chief looks to strengthen Lopetegui’s squad.

They also spent nearly £120 million on nine new summer arrivals in a major restructure of the squad, with former Real Betis midfielder Guido Rodriguez also joining on a free transfer.

National media throw dig at Rodriguez for joining West Ham

The World Cup-winning Argentina holding midfielder has started all six of their Premier League games so far, and his experience will be invaluable for West Ham as they look to climb the table.

Estadio Deportivo don’t share that opinion, though. Indeed, the outlet appears to have thrown shade at the 30-year-old’s decision to make a move to the London Stadium.

Guido Rodriguez

They suggest that Rodriguez made a mistake in leaving Betis for West Ham and refusing to sign a new deal, as they claim that he’s suffered a downturn in form since electing not to sign stay with Betis and leave for the English capital instead.

They back this verdict by calling his snub from the Argentine national squad “one of the worst pieces of news” and a “moral blow” for the South American, saying he was one of the best defensive midfielders in the world at Betis.

Estadio think that Rodriguez’s move to West Ham is a big reason why he hasn’t been selected by Lionel Scaloni for the next international break, but we believe this could be pretty far-fetched and more down to the form of Rodrigo de Paul, Giovani Lo Celso, Exequiel Palacios and Enzo Fernandez.

A defeat to Pep Guardiola’s imperious title-winners aside, Chelsea have performed in brilliant fashion over their trio of other clashes, and were very unlucky not to come away from their 1-1 draw at home to Crystal Palace with all three points.

After sharing the spoils with their London rivals at Stamford Bridge over a fortnight ago, Maresca’s side got back to winning ways in their first game back after the international break – clinching a 1-0 victory away to Bournemouth on Saturday.

Chelsea dominated possession at the Vitality Stadium, but Andoni Iraola’s Cherries gave them a lot of trouble. The Blues were under the cosh for a good portion of the 90 minutes, with goalkeeper Robert Sanchez even saving a penalty. However, Chelsea battled hard for all three points, with Christopher Nkunku sealing all three points through his smash-and-grab winner just before added time.

While Axel Disasi and Pedro Neto were criticised for their Chelsea performances against Bournemouth, with the former playing out of position before he was hauled off just past the hour mark, summer signing Jadon Sancho enjoyed a lively debut and provided the assist for Nkunku’s late winner.

It was a crucial, hard-earned victory for Maresca’s men – who now prepare for a tough to trip to the London Stadium this weekend to face West Ham next.

Chelsea given West Ham injury boost as Romeo Lavia trains at Cobham

A quartet of players missed the game on Saturday, with Malo Gusto out alongside Reece James to leave Maresca’s desperately short of right-backs over the weekend.

Luckily for the Italian, it appears Gusto has returned to training in a real boost for Chelsea, and he isn’t the only one. Midfielder Romeo Lavia missed their trip to Bournemouth with a hamstring injury, but the Belgian is now also back in contention.

As per Standard Sport, Lavia returned to Cobham training as well on Monday, following his recovery from a hamstring problem. He could therefore be available to play West Ham alongside Gusto, but defender Reece James remains sidelined.

Having the 20-year-old back will be a welcome boost for Maresca, despite Moises Caicedo’s excellent performances lately, and supporters will be hoping that Lavia can eventually become the “shining star” he was at Southampton (Sam Tighe).

Nottingham Forest now chasing £16k-p/w ace dubbed "the new Zinedine Zidane"

Nottingham Forest have made contact to sign a new midfielder this summer as they look to bolster their ranks ahead of the new Premier League season, it has been reported.

Nottingham Forest face kind opening fixtures

After facing Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United and Manchester City in their opening run of the 2023/24 campaign, Nuno Espírito Santo's side have been handed much kinder fixtures to kick off the 2024/25 Premier League season.

The Garibaldi kick off the campaign at the City Ground against Bournemouth, who are in the process of selling their star striker to Tottenham. That is followed by a trip to newly promoted Southampton before a Midlands derby against Wolves, who have also sold two of their key figures this summer.

Trips to Liverpool, Chelsea and Brighton follow as well as home ties with Crystal Palace and Fulham, but unlike 12 months ago, there is a chance for Forest to build some real early momentum in the campaign and pull well clear of the drop zone, something that they only managed to avoid on the final day of last season.

The easier start to the season will also give Forest time to assess their squad and add new faces to it between now and the transfer deadline on August 30th, with reports suggesting that several more signings could yet arrive at the City Ground before the window slams shut. Now, they have been linked with a move to sign a man once tipped to be going to the very top.

Nottingham Forest chase £12m Milan man

That comes with reports in Italy claiming that Nottingham Forest are one of a trio of Premier League sides chasing AC Milan midfielder Yacine Adli ahead of the transfer window closing.

The Frenchman came through the ranks at PSG before Bordeaux snapped him up, only for Milan to come calling for his services two years later. Now 24-years-old, he has not lived up to his early potential yet, where he was considered by some to be the next big thing in French football.

Adli’s former Bordeaux Manager Paulo Sousa dubbed him “the new Zinedine Zidane for his technical qualities” during his time with the now fourth-tier side.

But now the Frenchman, who is yet to be capped at senior international level, is down to the final two years of his £16,000 a week deal at San Siro, and has started just one pre-season friendly under new boss Paulo Fonseca, leading reports in Italy to suggest that he is no longer wanted in Milan.

The Premier League is a different matter though; they claim that Brentford have already approached the Rossoneri over a potential deal, while Nottingham Forest and Leicester City have also made contact for his services.

He would not be an expensive risk to take, with AC Milan reportedly setting his price tag at a "negotiable €14m" (£12m), which could prove excellent value for money should any side finally be able to extract his much promised talent out of him.

Southampton agree £7m fee to sign £40k-p/w forward; personal terms close

Southampton are closing in on another new face this summer as they look to avoid relegation from the Premier League during the 2024/25 season.

Busy summer for Southampton

Russell Martin's side edged past Leeds United in the Championship playoff final to earn their place in the top flight for the upcoming campaign, but the transfer window on the south coast so far has been somewhat underwhelming.

Though they have added 10 new faces to their squad, their two major purchases (in excess of £6m) have both been to make last season's loanees permanent residents at St Mary's. Taylor Harwood-Bellis' arrival was confirmed for £20m thanks to a clause in his contract that made the deal permanent if the club achieved promotion, while they also agreed a £15m deal with West Ham United to sign Flynn Downes.

The Saints also added Yuki Sugawara in a deal worth £5.5m, as well as promising young duo Nathan Wood (22) and Ronnie Edwards (21) from Swansea and Peterborough respectively. Beyond that, they have opted to sign five free agents, headlined by former Saint Adam Lallana as they look to blend experience and youth.

Southampton agree £7m deal for forward

That comes with transfer guru Fabrizio Romano revealing that Southampton have agreed a deal to sign Ben Brereton-Diaz from Villarreal.

The Chilean striker spent the second half of the 2023/24 campaign on loan with Sheffield United, where he scored six times in 14 outings but could not prevent the Blades from being relegated.

Returning to Villarreal, he has been deemed surplus to requirements despite still having three years left to run on his £40,000 a week deal with the Yellow Submarine.

Now, Southampton have pounced, with the south coast side agreeing a fee of around £7m to bring Diaz back to England, where he made his name. Romano adds that personal terms are "on the verge of being agreed" with the contract "set to be signed soon" and Brereton-Diaz set to travel to Southampton to complete the move.

Ben Brereton Diaz for Villarreal.

Breaking through at Blackburn Rovers, Brereton-Diaz was hailed as having an "extraordinary" workrate by former manager Tony Mowbray back in 2021.

“He’s working extraordinarily hard tracking full backs – or wing-backs as it was today. So the physical output has been amazing really", the former Ewood Park boss explained.

“I’m just delighted he’s getting the rewards for all the hard work he does, as they all do to be honest. The training sessions are less group training sessions and more individual and the team are seeing the benefit of that.”

Capable of playing on the left-flank or centrally, he will add plenty of options to Martin's attack and brings extra experience of top flight football, which could prove invaluable in their relegation battle.

After slow start, Chepauk pitch likely to take fast turn in second Test

After toiling on a slow and flat surface in the first Test, Indian spinners are likely to get more purchase in the second Test, starting on Saturday, as the pitch is expected to take turn as early as the first day.The key difference between the two surfaces is the nature of the soil. The pitch for the first Test comprised purely of red soil and it did not break until late in the match. However, the surface for the second Test will have a base comprising red soil and a top layer comprising black cotton soil. It is understood that if the conditions are dry, the top layer, primarily made of black clay, will start to disintegrate faster. The red soil in Chennai is different from the Mumbai variant. The Mumbai one stays true through the match, while in Chennai, it usually crumbles quickly if underprepared. However, the pitch was well-bound ahead of the first Test to ensure the match stretched to the fifth day.On the eve of the first Test, Chepauk head groundsman V Ramesh Kumar had told ESPNcricinfo that he would make a surface with an “English look”, to suit all bowlers. But by the time of the toss, Chepauk pitch had been shorn of any grass. Consequently, the pitch was slow. The new ball lost its shine quickly and the leather softened early too, thus hurting India’s fast-bowling duo Jasprit Bumrah and Ishant Sharma. Sharma highlighted the bland nature of the pitch across the opening two days, by saying it resembled a “road”.Even R Ashwin, India’s premier spinner, who is closing in on 400 Test wickets, struggled to find purchase from the surface over the first two days. England took advantage of the bald, hard, flat surface as Joe Root made a double-century and England amassed 578 in the first innings. The one factor in favour of the bowlers still was the bounce, which remained consistent mostly throughout the five days. Gradually, the surface became abrasive and it helped both spinners and fast bowlers, the latter making an impact with the reverse swing as James Anderson showed in a memorable spell on the fifth morning. What India might have a desired in the first Test – a quick turner where they can dominate England batsmen – they are likely to get this weekend.Usually, groundsmen stop watering the pitch two days before the Test match to allow the moisture to be retained. When England arrived for training on Thursday morning, the pitch was left uncovered. Later, it was covered with the hessian cloth to protect against the high temperature, which is in the mid-30-degree Celsius.Another significant difference in the second Test could be the low bounce, as a consequence of the dry pitch. It remains to be seen how much grass is left on Saturday morning. The turning nature of the surface is likely to influence the final XI for India, who face difficult questions regarding their second line of spinners to assist Ashwin. India captain Virat Kohli has already spoken about the lack of contribution from Shahbaz Nadeem and Washington Sundar in the first Test.Axar Patel is likely to make his Test debut having recovered from the knee injury he picked on the eve of the first Test. In case Patel plays, the Indian team management will need to figure out whether they go with Sundar or Kuldeep Yadav as the third spinner.

Top target: Newcastle want title-winning 52 y/o if Howe quits for England

Newcastle United will reportedly "make a move" for a manager who Pep Guardiola thinks is "excellent", should Eddie Howe become England's next boss.

Newcastle manager Howe linked with England job

Gareth Southgate has announced that he is leaving his role in charge of the Three Lions, with the FA now searching to find an ideal successor in the coming weeks and months. The 53-year-old enjoyed an impressive eight years in the role, so his replacement will be under pressure to impress from the off.

Howe has emerged as one of the favourites to take over from Southgate, even long before this week's confirmation, having enhanced his reputation as one of the best English managers of his generation during an excellent spell in charge of Newcastle. He guided the Magpies into the Champions League, and while last season was disappointing overall, he still has more than enough credit in the bank.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe

The likes of Graham Potter and Lee Carsley also appear to be very much in the mix to succeed Southgate, as well as more left-field and unlikely appointments such as Jurgen Klopp and Jose Mourinho, but Howe could arguably be among the front-runners if he wasn't already.

As it is, the Newcastle manager appears to be happy at St James' Park currently, but the lure of taking the most high-profile job could still be looming over him. Should that happen, PIF will need to find a replacement, and it looks as though their priority option has been lined up.

Newcastle line up "excellent" Howe successor

According to a new update from The Mirror, Newcastle will "make a move" for Mauricio Pochettino as a replacement for Howe, should the latter leave for England. It is noted that he has "just lost his two biggest allies in the boardroom, Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi", which could arguably sway his thinking.

The Magpies boss is "believed to be torn between the chance of managing his country and staying at St. James’ Park", and Pochettino is described as the "No.1" target to come in.

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino

Pochettino's stock has fallen a little in recent years, having been an extremely highly-rated manager during his Tottenham days, guiding them into the 2019 Champions League final, which they eventually lost to Liverpool.

The Argentine's time at Paris Saint-Germain wasn't exactly earth-shattering, even if he did still win one Ligue 1 title, and he left Chelsea by mutual consent after less than a year in charge at Stamford Bridge.

Still, Guardiola has described him as "excellent", clearly thinking of him highly as a boss, and it would be unfair to judge his time at Chelsea too harshly, considering the number of managerial changes at Stamford Bridge in recent years.

Pochettino plays a good brand of attacking football, often adopting a 4-2-3-1 formation, and while keeping Howe should be the preferable outcome for Newcastle, he could be a strong option to come in if the current boss opted to take the England job.

Man Utd looking to beat Newcastle in race to sign Premier League wonderkid

Setting their sights on the future, Manchester United are reportedly looking to beat Newcastle United in the race to sign a rising star for Erik ten Hag in this summer's transfer window.

Man Utd transfer news

Even without any confirmed arrivals as of yet, it's been a hectic start to the summer for the Red Devils, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe eventually deciding to keep hold of Ten Hag rather than look towards the likes of Thomas Tuchel and Gareth Southgate. Now, in some twist, the Dutchman is reportedly close to putting pen to paper on a new contract at Old Trafford, as per Fabrizio Romano.

With Ten Hag's future almost sealed, reports suggest that Ratcliffe has now turned his attention towards potential incomings, including one player who the Red Devils must beat Newcastle United to sign this summer.

Man Utd now ready to go above and beyond in £46m move for "fantastic" ace

The Red Devils aren’t messing around.

ByTom Cunningham Jun 28, 2024

According to The Daily Mail, Manchester United are looking to beat Newcastle to sign Yahya Idrissi-Regragui from Chelsea's academy in the coming months. The Blues are, however, reportedly keen to tie the 16-year-old down to a new contract at Stamford Bridge in order to fend off interest from fellow Premier League clubs.

The Premier League saw just what Manchester United's academy can offer last season, as Kobbie Mainoo emerged to become one of few bright sparks in a campaign to forget. Now, Idrissi-Regragui could complete a move to take a similar path, before eventually even partnering Mainoo in midfield.

"Wonderkid" Idrissi-Regragui can follow Mainoo path

Mainoo's recent rise has been quite the watch. From United's academy to then being thrown into Ten Hag's side as the unlikely solution to their midfield problems, the midfielder was called up to Gareth Southgate's England squad for Euro 2024, in which he could still have an important role to play. If any young player at Old Trafford wanted a path to follow, then they should look straight towards the 19-year-old.

Described as a "wonderkid" by The Daily Mail, Idrissi-Regragui certainly has a decision to make this summer when it comes to signing his first professional contract. The young attacking midfielder isn't short on options either, given the interest of Manchester United and Newcastle.

It's those at Old Trafford who will hope to put together the most convincing pitch, however, by using the likes of Mainoo as the perfect example of what they can offer young players. Whilst they have struggled to return to the top of English football in the last 11 years, United, to their credit, have consistently awarded academy graduates with opportunities.
