Tottenham linked with Dutch swoop

Barcelona’s Dutch forward Ibrahim Afellay has been linked with a shock move to north London club Tottenham Hotspur according to The Daily Mirror.

Reports that Spurs chief scout Ian Broomfield attended last night’s Audi Cup match in Germany to run the rule over the exciting attacking winger, as Barcelona took on Internacional of Brazil. Afellay played the entire first half, hitting the woodwork with a curling effort with once chance, giving Broomfield the chance to compile a brief report for Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp.

The Dutch attacking star, who only joined Barcelona in January for a cut-price fee before his contract expired, has so far found it difficult to break into Barcelona’s front three, mainly being used as just an impact substitute or in cup matches. He will find his task even harder this season after the Catalan club’s capture of Chilean attacking sensation Alexis Sanchez, which may lead Afellay, who was once heavily linked with moves to Liverpool and Arsenal, to seek a move away from the European Champions in search of more regular action.

Manchester City back on top after derby win

Manchester City have retaken the initiative in the Premier League title race, after beating rivals Manchester United 1-0 at the Etihad Stadium on Monday night.

A Vincent Kompany header on the stroke of half-time sealed victory for the hosts, and drew City equal on points with the current champions.

However City go back top due to their superior goal difference, and now have their title hopes in their own hands.

Another talking point of the game was a touchline clash between Sir Alex Ferguson and Roberto Mancini, with the United manager accusing his opponent of badgering the match officials.

“He (Mancini) was badgering the referee the whole game, the fourth official and the linesman, and the minute I go out there…” he told Sky Sports.

“He was complaining about referees all week, he can’t be complaining tonight, that’s for sure.”

Despite City now being in pole position to steal United’s crown, Mancini has maintained that the battle is not yet over.

“We are happy, but I think that next Sunday we will have another difficult game,” he stated.

“I think we deserved to win this game. We scored. We played well and had the chance to score the second goal.

“I don’t think that they had the chance to score.

“It was a difficult game, because United are a top team. We know this,” he concluded.

Spurs linked with striking duo

Spurs are closing in on 20-year old Mexican striker Antonio Pedroza Whitham, according to the Daily Mail.

The forward’s contract with club Jaguares is expiring and Spurs have reportedly agreed a fee in the region of £1 million for the player’s services. The young attacker was born in England but moved to Mexico at a young age. Pedroza would become the second player to move to White Hart Lane this summer after the acquisition of veteran goalkeeper Brad Friedel from Aston Villa.

Another young striker linked with the club is 16-year old Caen prospect M’Baye Niang. The France Under-17 striker only made his first team debut in April but enjoyed a fine end to the season scoring 3 goals in 7 games. Spurs boss Harry Redknapp is reported to be willing to offer up to £7 million for the youngster.

Manchester City are also chasing Niang and are rumoured to be willing to offer £10 million for his services. However, Harry Redknapp will hope to tempt to player to White Hart Lane as his side push for a return to Champions League football.

Redknapp is rumoured to be keen to overhaul his striking options with any of Jermaine Defoe, Roman Pavlyuchenko, Robbie Keane and Peter Crouch believed to be available for transfer.

FIVE things we learnt about Man City last night

There were mixed feelings for Manchester City fans last night. The good news that Carlos Tevez withdrew his transfer request quickly turned sour as City lost at home to Everton and missed the chance to go top of the Premier League table.

Manchester City just didn’t get out of the blocks at Eastlands last night, going two down within 20 minutes and then forced to chase the game. City did pull a goal back through a Phil Jagielka own goal on 72 minutes, giving them 20 minutes to try and get an equaliser. Despite plenty of possession it just wasn’t Manchester City’s night, with Mario Balotelli coming closest when he hit the post. To rub salt into the wounds Kolo Toure was sent off late on for two bookable offences, leaving Roberto Mancini to rue a missed opportunity.

So what are the five things we learnt about Everton last night?

Fabrice Muamba back on his feet

Bolton manager Owen Coyle has confirmed that Fabrice Muamba has been back walking again, despite still recovering from health problems.

The ex-England under-21 international collapsed on the White Hart Lane pitch with a cardiac arrest against Tottenham a fortnight ago, but the Scottish manager has stated that Muamba is making steady progress.

“He has done some short periods of walking down the corridor he is in as part of the unit, staying in intensive care,” he told The Daily Mail.

“He is taking steps, talking and has that big smile which we love to see, so he is certainly progressing the right way.

“My chairman Phil Gartside was there on Wednesday with our club doctor Jonathan Tobin, and our club chaplain Phil Mason will be there today to continue the support from the football club.

“A couple of players have been sending him messages and we are keeping in touch. It has been great to see that smile and he continues to get better.

“We have to stress that he still has a long way to go, but the improvement has been remarkable and long may that continue,” the head coach concluded.

Why Barcelona swoop could prove a blessing in disguise for Arsenal

Arsenal may have been handed a life line in their attempts to fend off Barcelona from persistently pursuing Cesc Fabregas. The Catalan giants haven’t been shy in expressing their interest in Fabregas, apparently having bids rejected by Arsenal during the summer. Yet Arsenal’s plight may become easier, as another player has appeared on Barcelona’s transfer radar and that is the PSV playmaker Ibrahim Afellay whose contract terminates in June next year. Afellay has refused to renew his contract, sparking a considerable amount of interest across Europe; with Arsenal being strongly linked and now Barcelona are being reported to have initiated contract talks.

Is this a blessing in disguise for Arsenal? For although they may miss out on a 24-year old prospect, they would retain their much coveted captain. Afellay as an alternative for Barcelona is just that, an alternative, he isn’t quite the real deal, but because they can’t attain it, they’ll settle for something of slightly less quality. This change in concentration comes from the exorbitant asking price that Arsenal has labelled Fabregas with, reported to be in the region of £45 million.

A Barca source was attributed in saying: “The money situation in the club changes the situation and today it is impossible to accept a big expense for the reinforcements.” Therefore if we are to adhere to what is said, Barca can’t afford Fabregas and will settle for Afellay. From the statement, the word ‘reinforcement’ strikes me as significant, for by definition a reinforcement comes after the starting player and acts as back-up effectively. I’m not sure many clubs would class Fabregas as reinforcement to their squad, apart from Barca apparently and even £45 million is too much for that purpose.

With the Spanish media claiming contract talks have been opened for Afellay, it seems that Arsenal may breathe a sigh of relief, in that Arsene Wenger won’t have to convince Fabregas to stay and that venerated pocket of Wenger’s will remain intact. Circumstances of serendipity have transpired to aid Arsenal in what seemed something of inevitability, a matter of when Fabregas would leave for Barca rather than if he would.

But when you require the attention of certain persons to fade away, a diversion is always handy and can be enacted by oneself or come fortuitously, leaving the previous interest to dissipate. It may be suggestible for Arsenal to continue with their interest in Afellay, merely to portray a false competition that will spur Barca on further to capture the player, resulting in the actual goal of Arsenal’s, to keep Fabregas.

I wouldn’t treat Barcelona with too much naivety though, for they won’t forget about Fabregas completely, rather it will just hand Fabregas more time at Arsenal which is a bonus to the fans more than anything. If Arsenal are to attain any success over the next few years than Fabregas will be central to this aim, just how long he shall remain to pursue it, is another matter.

Abramovich set to break bank to secure manager

Roman Abramovich is ready to break the bank to bring former manager Jose Mourinho back to Chelsea this summer, according to The Daily Mail.

The Blues have done well under interim boss Roberto Di Matteo but it is widely believed that the Russian oil tycoon is eager to bring a big-name coach to Stamford Bridge.

The newspaper state that the Blues will offer the Portuguese trainer £9 million a year after tax, and pay current employers Real Madrid £25 million in compensation.

‘The Special One’ is on the verge of sealing the La Liga title after beating Barcelona 2-1 at the Nou Camp on Saturday, and is also chasing Champions League glory with a semi-final against Bayern Munich hanging in the balance.

However, Mourinho has been agitated by the Spanish media, and rumours continue that he could walk away from the Santiago Bernabeu in the summer.

Other candidates for the Chelsea position according to the newspaper are France boss Laurent Blanc, Marseille’s Laurent Blanc and Zenit St Petersburg manager Luciano Spalletti.

Swansea plan move for Senna

Premiership new boys Swansea look set to make an audacious move for Spanish midfielder Marcos Senna, according to The Sun.

The 34-year old is available on a free transfer as his contract with Villarreal expires next month and will not be renewed. The tough-tackling midfielder would be a great addition to Swansea’s side but would have to accept a significant pay cut to move to the Welsh side.

Senna was born in Brazil has represented Spain 28 times and was a key part of the Euro 2008-winning side. However, he was unfortunate to miss out on the triumphant World Cup squad last Summer at the expense of Barcelona’s Sergio Busquets.

Senna first moved to Spain with Villarreal in 2002 and went on to make 228 league appearances. The former club captain also scored 15 times for the club, including a strike from inside the centre circle in 2008.

Senna had been linked with Manchester United in previous summers and Scottish side Rangers look set to also make a move for the veteran midfielder. However, Swansea appear to be in pole position to move for the player as he has stated his desire to play Premiership football before he retires.
