Carter hopes for Scotland swansong

Warwickshire allrounder hopes to represent Scotland after a change in the regulations allowing players to turn out for the country of their parents

George Dobell06-Sep-2012Neil Carter’s career with Warwickshire may be coming to an end, but his international career could be just beginning.Carter, the 37-year-old South Africa-born allrounder who is retiring from county cricket at the end of this season, is aiming to continue his career playing with Scotland after a change in recent regulations. He hopes to start his international career in the World Cup qualifiers in March.”There was a rule change about a month ago,” Carter told ESPNcricinfo. “In the past you either had to be born in the country or spend 100 days a year there. Now if your parent was Scottish – and my mum is – then you can qualify.”Carter, or “McCarter” as his team-mates have started to call him, has struggled to win a place in the Warwickshire team that won this season’s Championship title, but is expected to play in the CB40 final at Lord’s next week.He won Most Valuable Player of the 2010 domestic season and hopes that, by playing international limited-overs cricket for Scotland, he will be considered for short-term spells in T20 leagues around the worldIain Wardlaw, the Yorkshire seamer, is also thought to be considering making himself available for Scotland.

Blackwell strikes takes Durham close

The large gathering of former Sussex players at Hove on Friday would not have been impressed by the efforts of the current crop to stave off defeat by County Championship title hopefuls Durham. The visitors batted on until tea before declaring on 366 for seven with a lead of 520, and at the close Sussex were 119 for 4. The old boys were present for a lunchtime ceremony which involved re-naming the pavilion and most of them stayed for a surreal evening session played mostly in a swirling mist.Durham could have been made to look foolish for batting on so long, but although the umpires consulted once they decided to stay on and the last few overs were played in sunshine. Chris Nash fell lbw to Callum Thorp for four in the second over after tea.In the fifth over Graham Onions pinned Luke Wells in front to make it 25 for two, but Ed Joyce and Murray Goodwin put on 46 with relative comfort before both surrendered to Ian Blackwell. Blackwell came on when the mist was at its worst and struck in his fourth over when he defeated Goodwin’s attempted sweep to gain the third lbw verdict.Six overs from the close Blackwell was handed a second wicket when Joyce pulled him to Scott Borthwick at deep square leg to depart for 57. Nightwatchman James Anyon kept Matt Prior company to the close, although the latter was lucky to survive an airy drive at Borthwick in the final over when on 21.All Durham’s top six, other than the injured Michael Di Venuto, earlier helped themselves to relatively easy runs. Resuming on 93 without loss, they added 107 in the morning and 166 in the afternoon. Although he was on the field throughout both sessions, South African Wayne Parnell was kept out of the Sussex attack as they looked ahead to Sunday’s Clydesdale Bank 40 semi-final at The Oval.Durham face a four-hour trip to Taunton for their semi-final and will hope to wrap things up swiftly tomorrow. Occasional off-spinner Nash got through 27 overs to take four for 103 and Monty Panesar picked up his first two wickets of the match.Opener Will Smith, on 54 overnight, went on to complete his third century of the season off 192 balls. As soon as he reached his hundred he looked to accelerate and in trying to paddle Panesar to fine leg he fell lbw.Paul Collingwood drove Panesar for a big six over long-on, but in going for a repeat he fell slightly short and was caught by Amjad Khan for 51. Blackwell made 61 off 68 balls before he was stumped by Ben Brown off the bowling of Nash.

Sussex sign Amjad Khan from Kent

Sussex have signed the Danish-born paceman Amjad Khan from Kent on a three-year contract.

Cricinfo staff14-Sep-2010Sussex have signed the Danish-born paceman Amjad Khan from Kent on a three-year contract.Khan, 29, had been with Kent since his arrival on the county scene in 2002 but was unable to agree terms with the county for a new deal. He instead joins newly-promoted Sussex as their senior fast bowler, the day after Corey Collymore announced he was leaving Sussex for Middlesex.Khan was granted British citizenship in 2006 and attracted interest from the England selectors three years later, overcoming a career-threatening knee injury to make his Test debut against West Indies at Port of Spain in March 2009.Though he hasn’t played for England since, his reputation for pace and reverse-swing makes him an exciting prospect for Sussex coach Mark Robinson.”Amjad has genuine pace and is a potential match-winner in all formats of the game,” he said. “Having spoken at length with him, one thing that comes across is how hungry he is to re-establish himself as a potential England cricketer, and to make telling contributions to a winning team. His reasons for coming are all those, as a coach, that you want to hear. He will be a good spearhead to complement our other exciting young bowlers.”Khan has missed most of this season with injury and was sad to leave the county that had founded his career but he said he’s looking forward to a new challenge. “My nine years with Kent have been fantastic and it was a wrench to leave, but I have come to the point in my career where I need a new start and a fresh challenge.”Sussex has a great reputation for supporting and developing it’s squad and I am excited about the prospects for the rest of my career as I have no intention of being a one-cap Test cricketer.”

Simples assim.

Joyce's masterful double hurts Derbyshire

ScorecardEd Joyce made Derbyshire pay for an early life•Getty Images

Ed Joyce delivered a batting masterclass as he and Luke Wells enjoyed a record-breaking day at Derby to put Sussex in a position of total dominance over Derbyshire.Joyce, the former Sussex captain, scored 250 from 327 balls, the highest of his first-class career, while Wells made 116 and shared a second-wicket stand of 310 in 85 overs. It was the highest for any wicket by Sussex against Derbyshire with Joyce plundering 34 fours and two sixes before he was lbw to the offspin of Wes Durston who also dismissed Wells but the visitors ended day two on 468 for 5, a lead of 277.Derbyshire knew they had to strike early to get back in the game and the chance came and went in the seventh over of the morning when Joyce was put down in the covers. He was on 47 out of 103 when he mistimed a drive at Andy Carter but Hamish Rutherford spilled a low chance and Joyce made them pay a high price as he and Wells batted through the first two sessions. At least Derbyshire made them work harder for their runs before lunch when they scored only 70 in 32 overs but the pitch had eased considerably and the watchful accumulation in the morning allowed the pair to step on the gas in the afternoon.Billy Godleman used six bowlers before lunch and even turned to the occasional spin of former captain Wayne Madsen but, the occasional false shot apart, there was little to encourage the home side after that early miss. The tone for the rest of the day was set shortly after lunch when a top-edged pull by Joyce off Carter cleared the ropes and he reached his century when he nudged his 180th ball into the covers for a single.Derbyshire claimed the new ball immediately but it made little impression as Joyce pulled and cut Luke Fletcher for boundaries before Wells whipped Andy Carter through midwicket to bring up the 200 stand. There was no sign of nerves as Wells moved quickly through the nineties with two fours from Shiv Thakor and reached his century shortly before the end of the second session which had seen Sussex double their morning’s output. What came after tea was carnage as Joyce smashed Fletcher out of the attack with five consecutive fours before taking another four boundaries from a Carter over.He survived another dropped catch on 170 when Durston could not cling onto a sharp chance at second slip and after pulling Carter for two more fours, raised his bat to acknowledge a superb double century which had come from 286 balls. His fourth fifty came off only 26 balls and although Derbyshire finally broke through when Wells drove at Durston and was smartly taken by Madsen at slip, Joyce passed his previous best first-class score of 231 and scored 107 in gthe evening session before Durston trapped him lbw.Thakor removed Ross Taylor and Matt Machan chaeply but unless rain intervenes, it is hard to see Derbyshire denying Sussex victory.

ICC suspends USACA over 'significant concerns'

The ICC board has suspended the membership of the USA Cricket Association with immediate effect. The ICC made its decision based on the findings of a review group it had constituted to look into the status and activities of the USACA, and after meeting USACA representatives during the ongoing ICC annual conference week.According to an ICC release, the review group “had expressed significant concerns about the governance, finance, reputation and cricketing activities of USACA”.The suspension will cut the USACA off from ICC funding, and rule it ineligible to determine whether events staged in the USA are given approved status or not. As per the ICC operating manual, the ICC will take over that function.Despite the USACA’s suspension, the USA national team will be allowed to take part in next month’s World T20 Qualifier in Ireland and Scotland. The USA Under-19 team will also be eligible to participate in the Americas U-19 Championship in Bermuda.”The ICC Board has made this difficult decision after careful consideration and in the best interest of the game and all cricketers in the USA,” the ICC chairman N Srinivasan said. “The country has tremendous potential but because of governance, financial and cricketing challenges, the opportunity to grow the game is not being properly nurtured.”The ICC Board had put USACA on notice in its January meeting this year and had hoped that it would show some urgency to address and improve in the areas that were identified as weaknesses. Unfortunately, the response to date has been inadequate and it has proved necessary for the ICC Board to take further action.”To have its membership reinstated, the USACA will need to show the ICC board that it has addressed “conditions relating to governance, finance and its cricket activities”, with the ICC chief executive David Richardson – assisted by representatives from the BCCI, ECB, CA and WICB – monitoring its progress.

Chama Milind did most of the damage taking 4 for 24, including the wickets of Brainder Sran and Gurinder Singh off the first two balls of the final over. Punjab needed only two runs to win at the start of the over and they secured a win off the third ball of the final over.Debutant left-arm spinner Shesdeep Patra picked up 5 for 18 in three overs to help Odisha beat Mumbai by 17 runs in a 15-over-a-side game in Cuttack.Chasing 126, Mumbai lost two wickets in the first over – of Akhil Herwadkar and Jay Bista for ducks – to Deepak Behera, leaving the score at 1 for 2. Raut dismissed Arabind Singh in the 12th over, then Rao was run-out by Herwadkar four balls later, for a 34-ball 48, and Raje then cleaned up Biplab Samantaray to leave Odisha at 95 for 5.
