Newcastle plotting David Raum swoop

An update has emerged on the next Newcastle United deal that Dan Ashworth is plotting for the summer transfer window…

What’s the talk?

According to Bild, the Magpies are one of the Premier League teams competing to land the full-back ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.

The Toon are set to challenge a number of clubs in attempting to land the €40m (£34m) Hoffenheim star in the coming weeks.

German podcaster Kevin Bader relayed the news, Tweeting: “Dortmund are getting plenty of competition when it comes to signing Hoffenheim left-back David Raum. The national team defender is said to cost around 40 million€. In addition to BVB, Manchester United, West Ham and Newcastle, among others, are interested.”

Eddie Howe would love him

The Magpies’ head coach would love to have Raum at St. James’ Park next season as he would be an exceptional addition to the team.

Whilst Matt Targett has already been brought in to play at left-back, Ashworth can bring in an alternative option for the club to call upon.

In the Premier League last term, Targett managed one goal and one assist – creating five ‘big chances’ – in 33 games for Villa and the Toon combined.

The Bundesliga’s official Twitter admin dubbed him a “marauding” full-back and his statistics in the Bundesliga certainly back that up as he caught the eye in the final third throughout the campaign.

In 2021/22, the 24-year-old produced three goals and 11 assists in 32 games for Hoffenheim. He provided 2.7 key passes per game and a whopping 19 ‘big chances’ for his teammates in the German top-flight, as he showcased his immense playmaking capabilities.

Along with his ability going forward, Raum also made 2.4 tackles and interceptions and won 4.5 duels per game as he proved that he can excel at both ends of the pitch. He added a huge threat going forward and did not neglect his defensive duties for the team.

Therefore, he can offer more quality than Targett in an attacking sense and this can make him a better option for Newcastle in games where they are expected to dominate the ball. He can break down deep blocks with his ability to create chances from left-back, whereas the former Villa man may be more suited to games against the top teams where he is not expected to be in possession as much.

Howe would love to have two quality options to pick from in this position and that is why he will be delighted by the club’s interest in Raum.

Everton transfer news on Truffert

Everton are reportedly now eyeing up a move to sign Adrien Truffert this summer.

The Lowdown: Impressive season

Truffert has come off the back of a solid season with Rennes, where he was a fourth place in Ligue 1, scoring an impressive three goals and making a further three assists from left-back in the process.

It means that his side will be playing in the UEFA Europa League next term, an upgrade from the Europa Conference League that they played in last term, in which he managed nine total appearances.

The Latest: Everton interest

As per L’Equipe, the Goodison Park outfit are now eyeing a potential deal for Truffert, who has recently changed agents to potentially force a move away from Rennes.

However, they will face competition from West Ham United, Leicester City, Ajax and Hoffenheim for his signature.

The Verdict: Sign

Vitaliy Mykolenko is the only recognised senior left-back in the squad at the moment, and so signing Truffert will provide some nice competition for the Ukraine international.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-news-7/” title=”Everton news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Dubbed a ‘quality’ player with ‘huge potential’ by his former manager Julien Stephan, the Frenchman is only 20 years of age, and the fact that he is already playing regularly in a major league and in European competition backs up Stephan’s praise.

Nonetheless, Frank Lampard will want to get business done early so he can work with his new squad as much as he can in pre-season.

Rangers: Mateo Cassierra not imminent

A big Glasgow Rangers twist has emerged over the Ibrox club’s pursuit of a striker heading into the summer transfer window…

What’s the talk?

According to the Daily Record, ‘club sources’ have denied an imminent swoop for Mateo Cassierra is coming for Rangers.

The report claims that the £8m-rated gem will not be arriving at Ibrox any time soon as there is no deal in place for him to join, despite the player speaking about a potential move to Glasgow.

He was recently quoted as saying: “Personally, the priority is to be in Europe. I’ve been abroad for five years, in different countries and leagues. But as I say, we are in time to rest and now nothing can be ruled out”.

“There was also talk about Rangers. The coach (van Bronckhorst) knows me. There are possibilities.

“River is something that has been talked about a lot at the end of last week. But I don’t know anything, a week ago we finished and the possibilities have to be seen.”

Supporters will be gutted

Gers supporters will be gutted by this news as it does not bode well for the chances of the Premiership side landing the Colombian forward this summer.

Although they have not completely ruled out a future move for the attacker, the club sources have rejected the idea that he is an imminent target. This will give other teams, including River Plate, an opportunity to snap him up whilst the Light Blues decide what they want to do.

Fans will be frustrated if Rangers do miss out on a deal for the 25-year-old as his statistics from the 2021/22 campaign suggest that he would be a terrific addition to Gio van Bronckhorst’s squad.

In the Russian Premier Liga, Cassierra produced 14 goals and four assists in 22 matches for Sochi, averaging a superb SofaScore rating of 7.29.

His goal record immediately stands out but his creativity from a number nine position is also very impressive. He managed to create four ‘big chances’ and provided 1.4 key passes per game as he showed that he can excel as a playmaker whilst also being a predator in the opposition’s box.

This means that he would be a double threat at the top end of the pitch for Rangers with his ability to both score and create goals. Therefore, the fans will be gutted to learn that – despite his comments – the club are not closing in on the striker.

West Ham: Moyes to make major mistake

West Ham United boss David Moyes could be about to make a significant error this summer, according to the latest reports…

What’s the word?

As per Claret and Hugh, the former Manchester United manager is reluctant to ‘spend big’ on a new centre-forward this summer, despite the current dearth of options in that position in the Hammers’ squad.

The report suggests that the Scotsman may once more rely on the services of Michail Antonio to lead the line, with the 59-year-old unwilling to break the bank as he looks to ‘stretch’ his budget as far as possible.

The belief is that Moyes views reported targets Ollie Watkins and Darwin Nunez as simply too expensive, despite having reportedly placed a £60m bid for the latter man back in January.

Supporters fuming

Although the report does outline that a striker may still arrive through the door, the fact that the club are seemingly unwilling to splash the cash on a notable upgrade will come as a real source of anger for supporters, as not securing a top-class striker could well be Moyes’ biggest mistake in the window yet.

At present, the only senior, recognised number nine in the squad is Michail Antonio, with the player himself having even admitted that a new forward could be needed, in order to help shoulder the burden and provide renewed competition.

Perhaps Moyes and co will simply recruit a cheaper, backup option to the Jamaica international, although there are concerns as to whether he is the man to lead the line long-term, despite currently ranking as the club’s top scorer in Premier League history.

A return of ten league goals in the 2021/22 campaign is no doubt respectable, although the Irons undoubtedly suffered when the former Nottingham Forest man hit a dry spell at the turn of the year, netting just three top-flight goals in 2022 – two of which came during the last three games of the season.

The 32-year-old does undoubtedly have his plus points, receiving notable praise from Pep Guardiola after the 2-2 draw with Manchester City a few weeks ago, although the jury is out on whether he can really put a consistent run of goalscoring form together across an entire season.

The prospect of heading into another campaign with the Wandsworth-born colossus as the sole striker will not sit well with supporters, with West Ham still yet to find a replacement for club-record flop Sebastian Haller, despite the Frenchman having departed back in January 2021.

Journalist tips Bassey to leave Rangers

Calvin Bassey established himself as a key player for Rangers in the most recent season and it has been no surprise to Gers fans to see him linked with a move away from Ibrox in recent weeks.

What’s the word?

Journalist Ryan Taylor recently spoke to GIVEMESPORT about Bassey’s future at Ibrox.

It comes with Aston Villa heavily linked with the 22-year-old defender, with former Gers manager Steven Gerrard clearly keen on bringing him to Villa Park.

Taylor said: “Bassey is clearly highly rated by Villa. I think that deal will happen; I can see it happening. Obviously, [Diego] Carlos coming in might change the picture, but it’s clear Villa rate him highly, and for me, it’s just a no-brainer.

“The way he played in the Europa League, he looks like a player that’s just naturally ready to step up and perform.”

Supporters will be gutted

The former Leicester City man won a lot of plaudits for his performances in Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side last season, with his switch to centre-back an inspired decision by the Dutch manager which brought out sensational performances, most notably in the Europa League final against Eintracht Frankfurt.

BT Sport pundit Owen Hargreaves was particularly impressed by the youngster following that game, as he said: “Calvin Bassey, my word, what a performance. That was astonishing, the energy and effort. Everything about his game was fantastic.

“Anyone watching that will be thinking: ‘That’s the kind of player I want in my team.”

With that in mind, it’s hardly a surprise that per SofaScore ratings, he ranks as the club’s fourth-best defender in 2021/22. That perhaps doesn’t do his performances justice with the youngster now one of the best up and coming talents in Scotland.

Since joining from the Foxes in 2020, the Nigeria international has gone on to make 64 appearances for the Teddy Bears, contributing one goal and six assists.

Having become first-choice last season, Rangers fans will surely want to keep the youngster around next season as they aim to reclaim the Scottish Premiership and target another run in Europe.

However, from what Taylor suggests, it seems unlikely that he will still be at Ibrox when the 2022/23 campaign begins, an eventuality that will no doubt leave supporters gutted.

West Ham will make ‘offer’ for Lingard

According to transfer insider Dean Jones, West Ham United look set to ‘make an offer’ for Jesse Lingard during the upcoming transfer window.

The Lowdown: West Ham set to face competition for Lingard

The 29-year-old is a Manchester United academy product and has been at the club since the age of seven, having since gone on to make 232 senior appearances for the Old Trafford outfit.

The 32-cap England international joined the Irons on loan in January 2021 and hugely impressed during his time at the London Stadium.

With his current contract in Manchester set to expire at the end of June, it looks as though David Moyes has reignited his interest in the midfielder after it was revealed earlier this week that West Ham have made initial enquiries about the possibility of re-signing Lingard in the summer.

The Hammers are set to face competition for his signature, though, as Serie A trio Roma, AC Milan and Juventus are all believed to be keen on offering the Warrington native a route out of the Premier League, with the player reportedly demanding a £150k-per-week contract wherever his next destination is.

The Latest: Jones makes Lingard ‘offer’ claim

Jones understands that West Ham are preparing to present an offer for Lingard and thinks that they will still have a go at making a proposal despite the 29-year-old’s hopes of landing a big-money move.

He told GiveMeSport: “They are going to make an offer to Jesse Lingard. They haven’t got around to it just yet, but there is going to be something happening on that front. We’ll just have to wait and see what that Lingard proposal is, first of all.”

The Verdict: Europa temptation?

Lingard was in scintillating form during his half-season at the London Stadium last year, so it comes as no surprise to see that the West Ham hierarchy are now trying to bring him to the club on a permanent basis.

The £18m-rated maestro scored nine goals and provided five assists in just 16 appearances under Moyes (as per Transfermarkt) and played a crucial part in helping the Irons to secure a club-record Premier League points tally and a crack at the Europa League, in which they went all the way to the semi-finals.

West Ham will now be looking forward to yet another season of European football next term after claiming a seventh-place finish in the league table, albeit in the Europa Conference League instead.

Nonetheless, the opportunity of playing regularly on the European stage may be a huge deciding factor when it comes to Lingard choosing where the next chapter of his career will take him.

West Ham: Insider shares major Bowen contract update

West Ham United insider Claret & Hugh have now shared a major in-house update involving star winger Jarrod Bowen.

The Lowdown: Irons eye new deal?

The 25-year-old has been one of manager David Moyes’ players of the 2021/2022 Premier League season, prompting the club and owners GSB to plan a possible new deal.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-developments-5/” title=”West Ham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Football Insider recently claimed that Bowen is set be offered a ‘huge’ fresh contract in east London as West Ham look to secure their star to fresh terms, potentially to fend off his growing list of admirers.

While their club ‘source’ believes the Hammers are planning to open negotiations ‘within weeks’, club insider C&H have now shared a major update to the contrary.

The Latest: C&H share major in-house Bowen update…

The outlet, sharing information from their own ‘key’ source, say that ‘discussions will start’ over a fresh contract for Bowen but Moyes’ side have set a different date.

West Ham have apparently ‘decided’ to hold ‘new talks’ with their star man’s representatives in September as the Irons now map out a crunch time for discussions.

Their source explained:

“He’s got three years to go. In September, once this window is over, discussions will start with his agent for a new deal. Our priority is that all the short term energy goes into signing new players.”

The Verdict: Right move?

While strengthening their position over Bowen comes as important, backing Moyes in the next transfer window to maintain their meteoric rise is surely a priority also.

Averaging the highest match rating domestically out of any West Ham man, standing out as their most valuable player going forward with 22 goals and assists combined (WhoScored), the Englishman could prove deadlier still playing alongside a star striker.

The London Stadium side must finally end their long search for a centre-forward and we believe this should stand out as their first and foremost priority this summer – especially since Michail Antonio remains their only natural, senior option in the position.

West Ham: ExWHUemployee makes exciting Lingard claim

Club insider ExWHUemployee has now shared some exciting transfer news out of West Ham United involving long-time target and Manchester United playmaker Jesse Lingard.

The Lowdown: On the radar…

Irons manager David Moyes has been interested in signing the England international on a permanent deal ever since his phenomenal 2020/21 loan spell.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-newest-updates/” title=”West Ham newest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Lingard shone in east London over the second half of last season, recording nine goals and four assists in just 16 Premier League starts.

The 29-year-old just missed out on a place in Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2020 squad despite his fine form under Moyes, but a lack of opportunities at Old Trafford since then has seemingly motivated Lingard to leave as a free agent.

The Latest: Ex shares exciting update…

Speaking in a Q&A on The West Ham Way website, insider Ex has now confirmed that Moyes and GSB ‘will make an offer’ for the out-of-contract Lingard this summer.

He added that West Ham are ‘definitely’ keen on bringing the 29-year-old back to the capital, explaining:

“David Moyes is a huge admirer of Jesse as we all know. He did so well on loan for us and loved his time at West Ham.

“Yes we are definitely keen to bring him back, and I believe we will be making an offer. Lingard though will have many on the table, with a few Italian clubs in for him too.

It’s my understanding that Jesse will weigh up the offers this summer and make a move, and lets remember this is his last part of his career. The door is certainly not closed on us signing Lingard.”

The Verdict: Get it done…

News of the Hammers’ unwavering interest in bringing Lingard back and their intention to make an offer should come as music to the ears of the club’s supporters.

Lauded as a potentially ‘huge’ and ‘massive’ signing by pundit Paul Robinson, the attacker’s sensational spell at West Ham last year is an indicator that he could be a serious snip on a Bosman deal.

West Ham could have an advantage over other teams in the race to sign Lingard given his great relationship with Moyes and the fact that he already knows the club quite well.

We certainly won’t rule out a move this summer, and this Ex update comes as an extremely promising one.

West Ham: Moyes had nightmare with Hugill

It has become something of a running joke that West Ham United are simply cursed when it comes to signing centre-forwards, with the club having brought in a seemingly endless string of names who have all failed to make the grade over the last decade or so.

From the likes of Mauro Zarate, to Simone Zaza to Sebastian Haller, the GSB era has been littered with costly mistakes, with current boss David Moyes having been left to, albeit successfully, mould the versatile Michail Antonio into his leading man.

Among all the strikers who have come and gone in the modern era, one name arguably stands out above the rest as one of the most head-scratching and bizarre of the lot – Jordan Hugill.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-this-weeks-latest-west-ham-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-more” title= “Read the latest West Ham news!”]

Signing players is always something of a lottery, although in the case of the former Preston North End striker there was always a feeling that he wouldn’t cut it at the elite level, having only plied his trade in the second tier and below prior to his £10m move in January 2018.

After a spate of injuries, Moyes turned to the then 25-year-old as a striking solution, during what was his first stint in charge of the club, although he failed to showcase the cunning market expertise that has become the defining feature of his second spell.

For Hugill, in particular, the former Manchester United manager might as well have not bothered pushing ahead with the deal, such was the entirely forgettable nature of the Englishman’s time at the club.

In fact, the Middlesbrough-born man went on to make just three appearances for the club – costing roughly £3.33m per outing and £2.2m per minute in relation to his transfer fee – with his total competitive playing time reaching just 22 minutes in all.

Unsurprisingly, the arrival of Manuel Pellegrini in the hot seat later that year saw the forward turfed out on loan to the Riverside Stadium for the 2018/19 campaign, before he was shipped out again the following year to Queens Park Rangers.

“leader” by Daniel Farke – he has since again been resigned to temporary moves to both West Bromwich Albion and – currently – Cardiff City for the 2021/22 season.

On a personal note, having risen through the football pyramid from non-league level to the Premier League, the move to the Hammers would no doubt have been a major milestone, even though he failed to have the impact that he would have liked.

For the east Londoners, however, it begs the question of quite why they ever opted to fork out such a sizeable figure for him in the first place – as well as his reported £30k-per-week salary – particularly as they never even handed him the chance to try and make his mark.

At least they managed to recoup a reported figure of £5m when they moved him on to Carrow Road. Every cloud…

Spurs monitoring Atalanta’s Joakim Maehle

Tottenham Hotspur are said to be monitoring Atalanta left-back Joakim Maehle and have identified him as a potential transfer target ahead of the summer, according to The Daily Mail.

The Lowdown: Maehle in demand

The 24-year-old first made the switch to Serie A from Genk in 2020 and has made 59 appearances to date for his current club, scoring three goals and providing four assists during that time, as per Transfermarkt.

The £15.3m-rated maestro is regarded as one of the world’s foremost attacking defenders right now, and with Antonio Conte being unable to nail down a regular left-sided player this season as a result of the injuries to both Matt Doherty and Sergio Reguilon, it’s no surprise that the north London giants are on the hunt for a suitable replacement.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-newest-updates/” title=”Tottenham newest updates…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Paratici eyeing another Serie A raid

In a report published by The Daily Mail, it is claimed that Tottenham are ‘looking at’ Maehle, who has been ‘viewed as ideal’ for the manager’s 3-4-3 formation.

Spurs’ director of football Fabio Paratici already has established connections to Serie A, having signed Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur from his former club Juventus in January, and this report has suggested that he will ‘return there’ to try and complete the signing of the 25-cap Denmark international.

The Verdict: An all-round player

The full-back will have no doubt gained plenty of interest from possible suitors thanks to his impressive performances for Denmark throughout Euro 2020 last summer, where they managed to reach the semi-final stage.

Maehle currently averages 2.21 blocks and 4.33 progressive passes per 90 minutes, via FBRef, showing his ability to impact a game at both ends of the pitch, and he was once hailed as a “fantastic” player by ITV pundit Ian Wright.

If Conte wants to assemble a new squad which has the potential to push for a Champions League place next season – and reports of the Italian wanting six new summer signings hints as such – the defender could prove to be a great addition, and one who could easily slot into that required wing-back position if Spurs can entice him to north London.
