Taijul Islam reminds Bangladesh of his worth

With Bangladesh missing Shakib, Taijul can be an example for the next gen to understand what it takes

Mohammad Isam28-Apr-2025Taijul Islam is that friend you can trust when no one else turns up. He will sit outside the doctor’s room for you; he will bowl your team to a great position when you are in trouble. Taijul has been that sort of friend for Bangladesh cricket. He has quietly taken 224 Test wickets, one among three to have ever done so for the country. Yet, he is far from being the sort of celebrity most cricketers enjoy in Bangladesh. When Zimbabwe were going comfortably on a first-day pitch that offered little to the bowlers, Taijul stepped up with another five-wicket haul. He partnered with offspinner Nayeem Hasan to tie up the visitors for the first 16 overs in the third session, before bagging the wickets. From 200 for 4, Zimbabwe collapsed to 227 for 9 at stumps. It put Bangladesh in the driving seat.Taijul showed them how to grit it out in tough situations. There was some help for the spinners in the latter part of the day, but Bangladesh took a bit of time to get themselves back in contention. Nick Welch retiring hurt shortly after tea was a lucky break. But thereafter, the slowdown of Zimbabwe was all down to Taijul and Nayeem.Related

Nayeem made circumstances easier for the Bangladesh bowlers when he removed captain Craig Ervine and Sean Williams in successive overs. Ervine struggled against offspin operating from both ends before being caught behind off Nayeem. Williams, the most accomplished of Zimbabwe’s batters on the day, struggled with cramps before sweeping hard to debutant backward square-leg where Tanzim Hasan Sakib took a sharp, leaping catch.Having taken Ben Curran’s wicket in his first over of the day, Taijul had to wait for his next. He removed Wessly Madhevere with a left-arm spinner’s stock delivery, that the batter edged to the wicketkeeper. Taijul then took two more with the new ball in the next over, both left-hand batters. Wellington Masakadza was trapped lbw before Richard Ngarava missed a straight one from over the wicket and was bowled. He ran out Vincent Masekesa shortly afterwards before clean bowling Welch, who had come back to bat after the fall of the eighth wicket.Nick Welch scored his second half-century in Test cricket before falling to Taijul Islam•AFP/Getty Images”[Welch retiring hurt] might have been the turning point,” Taijul said. “But you also have to remember we dried up their runs. We bowled maidens on the trot around that time. These things make a difference. Obviously, I am satisfied with my own performance particularly after Sylhet. When you have played 50 Tests and then bowl like I did in Sylhet, it is not great. The most important thing though was to help the team.”Nayeem and Mehidy Hasan Miraz tied down the left-handed pair of Ervine and Williams, which helped Taijul crack open the Zimbabwe lower order.”Bowling in partnerships is important. Sometimes you will see wickets falling on a flat wicket, sometimes it doesn’t on even good wickets,” Taijul said. “When you create pressure, there’s always chance of getting wickets. Of course, there’s a difference between the Sylhet wicket and this one but at the time they were playing very well. Our plan was to remain disciplined and check the runs. We have seen that even after a 100-150 runs partnership, two or three wickets fall [quickly].”

“I am satisfied with my own performance particularly after Sylhet. When you have played 50 Tests and then bowl like I did in Sylhet, it is not great”Taijul Islam makes an honest reflection

Taijul also credited Nayeem for getting Bangladesh two crucial wickets, especially after returning to the Test side following another considerable break. He last played against South Africa in October, and before that, just two Tests in 2023. This is Nayeem’s 12th Test match (all at home) in more than six years since his debut. “It is difficult for a player to come into the team after such gaps,” said Taijul. “Nayeem helped the team a lot today. He gave us two important breakthroughs.”Taijul is also steadily closing in on Shakib Al Hasan’s Bangladesh record of 246 Test wickets. He is also three behind Shakib’s 19 five-wicket hauls. Taijul, though, remains coy about reaching the mark, partly due to his nature of being understated throughout his career.”Every player dreams of becoming the best of the best. A player won’t get satisfaction until he reaches the top. I will try to reach that place, but Shakib has done so many things for Bangladesh. I am sure he will continue to do well, and we can all help Bangladesh cricket.”This is Taijul to a tee: a humble friend of Bangladesh cricket. A steady bowler, a reliable lower-order batter, and a dependable fielder. He doesn’t demand attention. He only wheels away from one end, giving the bowlers at the other end the support they need. With Bangladesh without Shakib now, Taijul can be a great example for the rest of the team to understand what it takes to make it at the highest level.

Cal Raleigh Was Intentionally Walked on Last Chance to Tie Barry Bonds HR Record

History will not be made in Detroit on Sunday, at least not on the Tigers' watch.

Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh entered the team's final game before the All-Star break just one home run short of tying Barry Bonds's record for the most home runs before the All-Star Game.

Raleigh hit two home runs during the Mariners' first game of their series against the Tigers on Friday, bringing him to 38 homers on the season. This left him one short of Bonds's record of 39 home runs in 2001, with two games left before the All-Star break to try and tie and/or break the record.

Raleigh did not manage to hit a home run in Saturday's 15-7 win over the Tigers, leaving him with one last game to tie the record on Sunday. After not recording the record-tying home run through the first eight innings, Raleigh had one more opportunity at the end of the game to try to hit his 39th home run of the season, but the Tigers intentionally walked him instead, keeping him from a shot at the record.

The Tigers were already down multiple runs in the game, but refused to offer a last chance for the record to be broken on their turf. Raleigh was walked three times total in the game, and will fall just one home run short of Bonds's record.

The decision was not received well by many fans, and especially Mariners fans, who wanted to see Raleigh take one more shot at history.

Though it would have been exciting to see Raleigh tie up the record, he still has put in a phenomenal first half of the 2025 season. He is MLB's current leader in home runs, and will shortly be on his way to his first MLB All-Star Game.

Best figures on IPL debut: Ashwani the first Indian with a four-for

There was no looking back after Ashwani struck with his first ball in the IPL

Dustin Silgardo31-Mar-2025

Alzarri Joseph | 3.4-1-12-6

MI vs SRH, Hyderabad, 2019Joseph, then just 22, was not slated to play IPL 2019 and only joined the Mumbai Indians (MI) squad as a replacement for Adam Milne. With Lasith Malinga unavailable because of his national commitments, Joseph got a game and had a dream start, dismissing David Warner in his first over. Vijay Shankar fell in his next, before Joseph dismissed Deepak Hooda, Rashid Khan and Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the space of four balls. He finished things off with the wicket of Siddarth Kaul as Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) were bundled for 96. Three of Joseph’s wickets were bowled as the SRH batters struggled to handle his pace.

Andrew Tye | 4-0-17-5

Gujarat Lions vs Royal Pune Supergiant, Rajkot, 2017Tye got his first IPL contract at age 31. By then, he was already known for his arsenal of slower balls, in particular his knuckleball, from his exploits in the BBL and the T20Is he had played for Australia. On IPL debut, he took four of his five wickets with knuckleballs as he restricted Rising Pune Supergiant/s in the middle and death overs. A hat-trick in the 20th over capped a fine display of his T20 skills. A year later, Tye saw his price tag rise from INR 50 lakh to INR 7.2 crore, as Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) splurged on him.

Shoaib Akhtar | 3-0-11-4

KKR vs DD, Kolkata, 2008Returning from a long injury layoff, Akhtar made a dramatic entry midway through the first IPL season, dismissing the Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) top four within his first 15 balls to derail their chase of 134. He got Virender Sehwag with swing, Gautam Gambhir and AB de Villiers with bounce, and Manoj Tiwary with pure pace. Akhtar would play only two more matches in the IPL, with Pakistan players not picked by any of the teams from 2009 onwards.

Ashwani Kumar | 3-0-24-4

MI vs KKR, Mumbai, 2025Not much was known about the 23-year-old left-arm seamer from Punjab when he made his IPL debut in MI’s third match of the 2025 season. Ashwani had played just a handful of domestic matches but had been part of trials at Punjab Kings (PBKS) before and impressed in the 2024 Sher E Punjab T20 competition. With his ability to skid the ball onto batters and surprise them with bounce, he ripped through Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) middle order on debut. Ajinkya Rahane sliced one to backward point, Rinku Singh was out to a short ball, and Manish Pandey and Andre Russell both lost their stumps as Ashwani became the first Indian to take a four-for on IPL debut.

Kevon Cooper | 4-0-26-4

RR vs KXIP, Jaipur, 2012After impressing in the Caribbean T20 and Champions League T20, Trindiad & Tobago allrounder Cooper was picked by Rajasthan Royals (RR) ahead of the 2012 season. He made an instant impression in the IPL, taking four wickets against Punjab with his combination of full balls and slower ones and helping RR defend 191 easily. He took another three wickets in his next game and remained an integral part of the RR side until 2015.

Man Utd in the NBA?! Red Devils set to launch basketball team as Sir Jim Ratcliffe sounds out additional revenue streams

Manchester United have been tipped to launch a basketball team as minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe explores other revenue streams. United are one of the most lucrative brands in the world and Sir Jim is keen to exploit the club's brand awareness in order to maximise profits having posted record financial revenues last year despite a poor domestic campaign under Erik ten Hag and then Ruben Amorim.

  • Utd posted record financial revenue last year

In September, United announced that they earned record financial revenue of £665.5m ($877m) last year despite the poor performance of the men's team. United finished the season in 15th, marking their worst ever Premier League campaign, and lost the Europa League final to league rivals Tottenham, meaning they wouldn't compete in European competition in the 2025/26 season.

However, last year saw United start their five-year front-of-shirt sponsorship deal with Snapdragon, which saw the Premier League giants post record commercial revenue of £333.3m ($439m). Matchday revenue was also a record £160.3m ($211m) in the year to June 30, 2025.

On the record financials, chief executive Omar Berrada said: "To have generated record revenues during such a challenging year for the club demonstrates the resilience which is a hallmark of Manchester United. As we settle into the 2025-26 season, we are working hard to improve the club in all areas."

The high revenue enabled the club to spend big to sign Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko and Senne Lammens despite a thoroughly underwhelming domestic campaign.

Man Utd have already signed up, claims Italian supremo

However, United aren't ready to rest on their financial laurels as Sir Jim explores other revenue streams. Basketball is among those the club are set to invest in according to Gianni Petrucci, the President of the Italian Basketball Federation.

Petrucci claims that United have agreed to participate in NBA Europe as the National Basketball Association seeks to capitalise on the growing popularity of the sport outside of America. The initiative will see a host of European cities, including Manchester, host at least 10 found franchises, with the Italian telling Corriere dello Sport: "It's a new league that will be good for the system, bringing resources and entertainment. The agreement also notes that registered clubs must participate in their respective domestic leagues.

"In a $50 billion (£37.9bn) market, European basketball has a commercial value of just $200 million (£152m). An NBA league is precisely the opportunity to increase competitiveness and expand the pool. If Manchester United, the most popular football team in the world, has already said yes, there must be a reason."

There are also believed to be plans for a team based in the capital of Italy, Rome, but the exact list of participants remains unclear. "There is no team from the capital in Serie A, but Rome will not be left out. There is a very concrete option linked to a wealthy entrepreneur," Petrucci added.

  • Premier League powerhouse continuing to lose money

United supremo Sir Jim is looking to increase profitability and despite posting record revenues last year, the club continues to lose money. The INEOS CEO sought to cut costs shortly after becoming minority owner through controversial redundancies, and this has seen the United workforce cut from 1,100 to 700 employees over the last two years.

Wages were also cut by over £50m ($66m), though that was in part due to the club's failure to qualify for the Champions League. Yet despite the lack of success, United are still predicting turnover of at least £640m ($843m) to the end of June 2026.

"As we start to feel the benefits of our cost reduction programme, there is significant potential for improved financial performance, which will, in turn, support our overriding priority: success on the pitch," Berrada said earlier this year.

Amorim looking to extend unbeaten run

United are looking to extend their unbeaten run when they take on rivals Everton next Monday. Ruben Amorim has overseen a five-game unbeaten run, rescued by a late Matthijs de Ligt equaliser in a 2-2 draw at Tottenham just over a week ago.

In that time, United have won three and drawn twice, and went into the international break seventh in the table, level on points with defending champions Liverpool. After the welcome of Everton next week, United round out November with a testing trip to Crystal Palace.

Jamie Overton out of Ashes amid 'indefinite break' from red-ball cricket

Fast bowler says he is unable to commit to all formats “mentally and physically” at this stage of career

ESPNcricinfo staff01-Sep-2025Jamie Overton, the England and Surrey fast bowler who was a permanent member of the Test squad during this summer’s series against India, has announced an “indefinite break from red-ball cricket”. The decision effectively rules him out of this winter’s Ashes campaign, a development that has left his white-ball captain and Test team-mate, Harry Brook, “shocked”.Overton, 31, played the second and last of his two Tests at The Oval in July, claiming two second-innings wickets in England’s thrilling six-run loss. His previous match had come at Headingley in 2022, when he made a match-turning 97 in partnership with Jonny Bairstow, in the first summer of Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum’s stewardship of the England team.Despite his infrequent appearances, Overton was a near-certainty to feature in England’s Ashes squad, given his sturdy build, strong action and ability to bowl at 90mph – all attributes that the selectors have been identifying in their bid to win in Australia for the first time since 2010-11.However, in an interview with the Telegraph, he spelt out his reasons for the shock decision, saying that at this stage of his career, it was “no longer possible to commit fully to all formats at every level, both physically and mentally”. He will be in Australia this winter, but as part of Adelaide Strikers’ squad in the Big Bash, a team with whom he has spent the past two seasons, and for whom he was named MVP earlier this year for his haul of 11 wickets and 191 runs at 95.50.Related

“After a great deal of thought, I have decided to take an indefinite break from red-ball cricket,” Overton said. “I feel very fortunate to have played 99 first-class matches, including two Test matches for England. Red-ball, first-class cricket has provided the foundation for my professional career and has been the gateway to every opportunity I’ve had in the game so far. It’s where I learnt the game, and it fuelled the goals and ambitions that have driven me for so long.”However, at this stage of my career, with the demands of cricket across a 12-month calendar, it’s no longer possible to commit fully to all formats at every level, both physically and mentally. Going forward, my focus will be on white-ball cricket, and I will continue to give everything to play at the highest level for as long as I can.”Overton is currently at Headingley, as part of England’s white-ball squad, with their first ODI against South Africa coming up on Tuesday. Speaking on the eve of the match, Brook admitted he was taken aback by the announcement, and its timing.”A little bit shocked to be honest,” Brook said. “I thought he did well in that last Test, he bowled quick. Obviously you’ve got to respect that decision that he’s going to have a little bit of a break from red-ball cricket. Hopefully at some point we’ll see him again in the future.Overton arrives at training ahead of the Headingley ODI•Getty Images

“I’d heard rumours but I hadn’t heard it from him until today. You’ve just got to respect the decision, he obviously doesn’t feel like he wants to play red-ball cricket at the minute and we can’t do anything about it. He’s made the decision now but it’s unfortunate. I thought he did really well in that last Test match and it would have been nice to have him there in the Ashes.”From his perspective as white-ball captain, however, Brook acknowledged that the singular focus could be of benefit to his team. “Absolutely,” he said. “When he is fully fit and firing he bowls thunderbolts and he can whack it out of the park. Hopefully he can upskill even more from what he’s got now and be the best white-ball player he can be.”Overton had only played once in the County Championship for Surrey this season before being recalled to the Test squad. Overall, he has made four first-class appearances for his county since the start of 2024, with injuries limiting his availability.Rob Key, England Men’s director of cricket, said: “Jamie’s news came unexpected and it is sad to see, as he would have been part of our red-ball plans for the foreseeable future. That said, it serves as a reminder of the cricketing landscape we now operate in. We respect his decision and are grateful to him for informing us when he did.”

Spurs have a "Kane regen" out on loan & he can send Kolo Muani packing

Tottenham Hotspur have been hunting for a new talisman over the last couple of seasons, but none have been able to emulate the incredible levels achieved by Harry Kane.

The 32-year-old rose through the ranks in North London, even being sent on numerous loan spells in the EFL, before making himself a fan-favourite in the Lilywhites’ first-team.

He would spend a decade scoring goals for fun in the Premier League, subsequently achieving a total of 280 strikes for the club – the most of any player in their history.

Such a feat highlights his incredible goalscoring prowess, but his ability to score 30+ goals in 50% of his ten years in North London further showcases his eye for the back of the net.

However, after numerous failed trophy attempts, the hierarchy were left with no choice but to sell Kane to allow him to further his career, with the forward subsequently joining Bayern Munich for £82m in 2023.

In the years since his move, countless options have tried to fill the void, but many have failed, leading to one player assuming the responsibility under Thomas Frank in 2025/26.

How Kolo Muani compares to other strikers in the PL in 2025/26

With Dominic Solanke, Spurs’ club-record signing, struggling with an ankle issue, the Lilywhites hierarchy decided to back new boss Frank with added reinforcements in the centre-forward area.

Richarlison assumed the role of operating as the number nine, but the Brazilian’s injury record ran the risk of potentially having to call upon an academy star to fill the void.

As a result, French international Randal Kolo Muani was signed on deadline day, with the hierarchy securing his signature on a season-long loan from PSG.

A loan fee in the region of £5m was forked out for the 26-year-old’s signature, with the deal appearing as a potential risk-free and bargain deal until the end of 2025/26.

Such a deal generated excitement within the fanbase, after the centre-forward netted 10 goals in just 24 appearances during a separate spell on loan at Juventus last season.

However, a little over two months on from his move, Kolo Muani has struggled with the expectations placed upon him, subsequently only featuring four times in the Premier League and failing to score a single goal.

His underlying figures also highlight the struggles he’s endured in North London, with the Frenchman ranking lowly in numerous key figures for a lone number nine.

He’s only registered a total of 0.47 shots per 90 in England’s top-flight – with such a tally ranking him in the lowest 1% of all other attackers in the division this season.

Kolo Muani’s other tallies of 1.4 touches in the opposition box and 0.4 aerials won per 90 also place him in the first percentile – further highlighting his lack of positive impact to date.

He suffered a broken jaw in the draw with Manchester United last weekend, potentially seeing him spend time on the sidelines – which could give the striker a period to reflect on his dismal start in England.

The Spurs star who could end Kolo Muani’s Spurs career

Kane’s departure, coupled with Kolo Muani’s lack of form, has certainly rubbed salt into the wounds of the Spurs faithful, with their loss now Bayern Munich’s gain.

The Englishman has carried on his tremendous goalscoring form away from North London, with the striker reaching the next level in his career after his big-money transfer.

Kane has netted a staggering 108 goals in his 113 appearances for the German outfit, with his numbers this season simply eye-boggling and certainly leaving the fans wishing he was still on their books.

He’s already scored 26 times in all competitions in 2025/26, with the entire Lilywhites senior squad only scoring 29 times combined during the same period.

Players like Kane don’t come around very often, with their Spurs faithful extremely lucky to have been able to witness his goalscoring antics first hand between 2013 and 2023.

Kolo Muani has so far failed to live up to the heights many expected, with his temporary deal in North London not expected to turn into a permanent one, given his recent lack of form.

However, the club appear to already have the perfect solution to their long-term centre-forward issues in the form of academy graduate Will Lankshear.

The youngster only joined the club’s youth setup back in August 2022, subsequently making the move from Sheffield United at the tender age of just 17.

Upon his switch to the capital, he linked up with the U21 side, but rapidly caught the eye with his goalscoring ability – with his 2023/24 campaign his best to date.

He found the net a staggering 32 times in just 35 appearances, leading to his first-team debut under Ange Postecoglou during the injury-hit campaign in 2024/25.

Lankshear managed to appear in six separate matches for the Lilywhites, half of which came in the Europa League, with the 20-year-old netting his first senior goal against Galatasaray.

However, he’s followed in Kane’s footsteps in moving into the EFL for valuable senior minutes to continue his development, with the youngster spending the current season on loan at Championship side Oxford United.

He’s already made an immediate impact at the Kassam Stadium, scoring four times in his 14 league appearances to date – leading to one analyst calling him a “Harry Kane regen”.

Lankshear’s underlying stats from the ongoing season highlight his incredible nature in the final third, which could see him be catapulted into the first-team reckoning in 2026/27.

He’s achieved a 43% shot on target accuracy rate and scoring with 50% of the efforts he’s registered – offering the clinical nature that Kane possessed in London.

The youngster is also keen to get on the ball whenever possible, ranking in the 80th percentile for passes completed, whilst also completing 50% of the dribbles he’s attempted.

Whilst Kolo Muani will need to be cut some slack for his lack of impact, he’s ultimately failed to hit the heights expected of him, with other options needing to be considered.

Lankshear will no doubt be chomping at the bit to make an impact in North London, with Frank desperately needing to hand him the chance to impress upon his return from his loan spell in the summer.

Spurs have "one of Europe’s best finishers" & he could end Richarlison's stay

Tottenham Hotspur can offload Richarlison if Thomas Frank shows faith in one other squad member.
