Bairstow dazzles once more

Another dazzling innings from Jonny Bairstow helped to race Yorkshire Vikings to an unlikely victory over Durham Jets in the NatWest T20 Blast at Headingley

Another dazzling innings from Jonny Bairstow helped to race Yorkshire Vikings to an unlikely victory over Durham Jets in the NatWest T20 Blast at Headingley.Chasing a formidable 192 target, Bairstow instigated a Yorkshire recovery from 66 for 4 with a magnificent 92 from 42 deliveries with eight fours and four sixes as Yorkshire charged home by five wickets with seven balls to spare. The victory boosted Yorkshire’s chances of climbing up the North table and gaining a place in the quarter-finals but it left Durham with still quite a lot of work to do to make sure they make it through to the last eight.Bairstow’s blast overshadowed a rousing unbeaten 91 from Durham Jets 22-year-old rookie batsman, Graham Clark, which looked to have set his side up for a convincing win after they had batted first on winning the tossIt was only Clark’s third match in the competition – he had managed just five runs in his two games in early June – but now he raced to Durham’s highest individual score of the season off 91 balls with 14 fours and a six.Insights

This was a bad weekend for mid-table Durham who lost this match to eighth placed Yorkshire while their rivals in the middle, Lancashire and Nottinghamshire, both recorded victories. Durham are now quite suddenly in a tough struggle to make the quarter-finals, especially as they have only two games remaining. They do, however, play Nottinghamshire and Northamptonshire, two teams also vying for a top four finish, in their remaining two fixtures . Win both and they will be well placed to qualify.

Although he survived two difficult chances on 21 and 38, he still dominated the crease, firstly helping the Jets recover from 49 for 4 and later combining with John Hastings to smash an unbroken 57 in 19 deliveries, Hastings’ brutal contribution being 43 from a mere 12 balls with five fours and three sixes, the last four overs leaking 69 runs. The onslaught raced Durham to 191 for 6 from their 20 overs and Matthew Fisher soaked up much of the punishment, his four overs costing 53 with Clark and Hastings plundering 21 off his final over.Yorkshire chose not to bowl Tim Bresnan but there was a fine debut appearance in front of a 9,536 crowd from 19-year-old paceman, Josh Shaw, the son of former Yorkshire fast bowler, Chris. Sharing the opening attack with off-spinner, Glenn Maxwell, he began with two sharp overs which gave away only ten runs but he suffered a bit later on when Durham pressed hard on the accelerator.Spinners Maxwell and Adil Rashid, released by England for this game and Sunday’s encounter with Derbyshire at Chesterfield, both bowled tidily before the visitors took control, Maxwell finishing with 2 for 28 after dismissing Phil Mustard and Mark Stoneman in his first two overs and Rashid two for 26.Yorkshire’s bid to move clear of their next-to-bottom place in the table appeared to have suffered a massive setback off the first ball of their reply which Aaron Finch hit straight into the hands of Scott Borthwick on the mid-wicket boundary, the Australian having made only 76 in six innings so far this season.Hastings was the wicket-taker and in a splendid all-round performance he had skipper Andrew Gale caught behind in his next over before Alex Lees was also held by Mustard off Usman Arshad to make it 28 for 3.Jonny Bairstow was off the mark with a first-ball boundary and he showed further defiance by smacking Borthwick for a straight six but Yorkshire lost another crucial wicket at 66 when Maxwell was bowled aiming to cut Borthwick. Now Jack Leaning joined the unstoppable Bairstow, who lashed an unbeaten 102 against Durham at Riverside last season, and the wicketkeeper-batsman charged to his 50 from 24 balls with four fours and three sixes to register his first half-century in the competition this summer. The pair had put on 97 from 54 balls and Bairstow seemed to be cruising to his century until he skied Arshad to Paul Collingwood.Yorkshire were 163 for 5 in the 17th over but Bresnan came in to finish the game in brutal fashion with consecutive sixes off Arshad in the penultimate over, Leaning ending unbeaten on 39 from 31 balls with two fours and a six and Bresnan 24 from eight deliveries with two fours and two sixes.Yorkshire captain Andrew Gale said: “I was a bit stunned by the performance and it was a nice way to bounce back after the Roses match last week. It was an outstanding performance but I was a bit disappointed that we gave them 20 or 30 runs more than we should have done. Jonny Bairstow is in the form of his life. We are lucky to have him and it won;t be long before England come calling again.”

ESPNcricinfo staff13-Jul-2015India batsman Ambati Rayudu has been ruled out of the team’s ongoing tour of Zimbabwe because of injury to his right quadriceps muscles. NZ Women fatigued after 'logistical nightmare'

With two wins in two matches, NZ couldn’t have expected a better start to their Women’s World T20 campaign, but a “bizarre logistical nightmare” has left the team exhausted, Haidee Tiffin, their coach said

With two wins in two matches, New Zealand couldn’t have expected a better start to their Women’s World T20 campaign, but a bizarre logistical nightmare has left them travel fatigued.Even as Australia, based in Nagpur for the last four days, enjoyed an off day with a recovery session followed by pool volleyball, New Zealand had to overcome the after-effects of an arduous twelve-hour travel day – the amount of time it would take to fly more than halfway to India from Auckland. Suzie Bates, their captain, summed it up perfectly by calling it an “India tour in one day.”Following an evening game against Ireland in Mohali on Friday, the team had to travel from Chandigarh to Nagpur, with stopovers at Delhi, Bangalore and Mumbai, which involved changing of airplanes twice. “I’m proud of the way the team carried themselves, it was tough,” Haidee Tiffen, their coach, said. “We left the hotel at 6am in the morning and arrived in Nagpur at 6pm in the evening. I don’t know if that was the most efficient or the most economical way that we could have got there. I want to question the logistics.”In saying that, I’ve said to the girls right from the start that attitude is a choice and the way the whole team carried themselves yesterday was tremendous. It was challenging but I want to acknowledge our medical staff, who have played a key role in keeping them in the best condition they can be in. Any team would say that it wasn’t ideal, but that is the reality of the situation. We have to be vigilant around our recovery, which we always are, but we are going in best prepared as we can be.”Tiffen’s concern is a valid one, considering New Zealand would have spent just a little over 24 hours at the venue heading into match day. That they would not get a taste of the conditions at Jamtha despite being in Nagpur since their arrival, has added to the team’s sense of discomfort. But Tiffen insisted they weren’t using it as an excuse, and her team would be ready to face the three-time champions Australia.”That’s nature of the way, even our schedule at home is pretty tight,” she said. “We have had some rain-affected practice games at home, but at the end of the day, the team has to prepare as best as we can in these conditions. Yes, we want more game time, but we are ready for tomorrow.”The girls are professionals, hitting an extra ball at the nets isn’t necessarily going to make them better cricketers. It’s just about having that self-belief and visualizing success, which our team is doing well. We’re under no illusions, we’re up against the world champions, and we have to play at our best to do well against this team.”While New Zealand would bank on the comforting thought of having beaten Australia in a three-match T20I series at home in February, they would also be wary of how they have had a history of letting things slip.”I think every time I’ve come with the White Ferns I’ve felt we have had the team to win this tournament,” Bates said. “We haven’t got past the finishing line, but with this group, I think we have the experience and in the best space to win it this time around.”Bates’ note of caution stems from past experiences. At the 2014 World T20, the side opened their campaign with a win over Australia, before registering two more wins against Ireland and Pakistan. But a meltdown against South Africa in their last league game severely dented their net run-rate, leading to an exit despite dominating the group stages. This time around, however, convincing wins over Ireland and Sri Lanka has given them a significant head start.”We have talked as a group about being billed as favourites, but as far as we are concerned, each game is being treated as a knockout game,” Bates said. “Any team can upset any side, particularly in T20s. We are just going about our business as usual. In terms of preparation, we’ve played them a lot and are comfortable making plans against them.”Tiffen and Bates also hoped having played in India as recently as July 2015 would count for something. Especially in a tournament where the caravan rolls along quickly, unlike the past editions of the Women’s World T20, where the women’s teams were based at the same venue till the semi-finals.”That’s part and parcel of it,” Tiffen said. “We all bring experience, and gain experience. I’ve been fortunate to work with a bunch of players who want to improve and get better, ones who want to push themselves till they succeed. I have a management team that is outstanding. As head coach, I have a collective and collaborative approach to our success.”Suzie and I have played together and share a good working relationship. I’ve had experience playing in India, as most of our girls have had. It’s about sharing our experiences, the good and the bad experiences – things like what we could have done differently – that’s the philosophy of our team. We are headed in the right direction.”

Kings XI seek revival against settled Pune

Rising Pune Supergiants may be the visitors, but they enter this clash as favourites against an underperforming Kings XI Punjab

The Preview by Sirish Raghavan16-Apr-2016Match factsSunday, April 17, 2016
Start time: 1600 local (1030 GMT)Big Picture”Played two, lost two” only scratches at the surface of Kings XI Punjab’s corpus of worries as they head into their third match of the season. The manner of their defeat against Delhi Daredevils at the Feroz Shah Kotla was particularly disconcerting. The middle order looked shaky and David Miller and Glenn Maxwell – on whom the team strongly depends – appeared badly out of form. Chaotic running between the wickets and missed chances in the field rounded off an all-round shambolic performance. Hence, even as they return to Mohali, Kings XI may be forgiven for feeling like they have strayed up a beanstalk and need to steal a win from Rising Pune Supergiants.Supergiants, for their part, will seek momentum with their settled side. Notwithstanding their defeat at the hands of Gujarat Lions, they have most bases covered. The top order is firing, the spinners are playing their part, and captain MS Dhoni played a fine cameo when he got the chance, against Lions. Though Rajat Bhatia and Mitchell Marsh had a poor match against the Lions, they bowled economical spells in the tournament opener against Mumbai Indians. RP Singh and Ishant Sharma may be more of a concern, though, particularly in relation to their struggles when bowling in the end overs.Ultimately, Supergiants seem to have more options and more ways to win a match than Kings XI. The hosts will need a disciplined and gutsy effort with contributions from their key players to register their first win of IPL 2016.In the spotlightMuch attention has been paid to Kings XI’s underperforming big-ticket overseas players, but in the meanwhile, Manan Vohra has scored good-looking, quickfire thirties in both their matches this season. After a quiet 2015, the 22-year-old looks in fine form at the moment and, with many of his team-mates struggling, might be the man to produce a standout performance. In the spotlight for Supergiants will be Ashwin. Both of them. M Ashwin, the young legspinner, has done a good job in the two matches so far and clearly has his captain’s backing. What was particularly noticeable in the opening match was how R Ashwin, senior offspinner and fellow Tamil Nadu player, was guiding the youngster through his spell, even as he himself got just the one over. In the last match, the two Ashwins bowled out their quotas and were their team’s best bowlers. After Kings XI’s capitulation to Amit Mishra on Friday, the Ashwins might have their work cut out.Team newsDespite the batting collapse of the last match, Kings XI might well be tempted to give the top seven another chance. On the bowling front, though, Mitchell Johnson has looked out of sorts, which could leave the door open for Kyle Abbott or Marcus Stoinis.Kings XI Punjab (probable) 1 M Vijay, 2 Manan Vohra, 3 Shaun Marsh, 4 David Miller (capt), 5 Glenn Maxwell, 6 Axar Patel, 7 Wriddhiman Saha (wk), 8 Mitchell Johnson/Kyle Abbott/Marcus Stoinis, 9 Mohit Sharma, 10 Pardeep Sahu, 11 Sandeep SharmaDhoni is known for his aversion to tinkering with his team, but as he strives to hit upon his best XI, he may make an exception. Albie Morkel might be considered in place of Mitchell Marsh, while RP Singh could well make way for Ishwar Pandey or Jaskaran Singh.Rising Pune Supergiants (probable) 1 Ajinkya Rahane, 2 Faf du Plessis, 3 Kevin Pietersen, 4 Steven Smith, 5 MS Dhoni (capt, wk), 6 Mitchell Marsh/Albie Morkel, 7 Rajat Bhatia, 8 R Ashwin, 9 Ishant Sharma, 10 M Ashwin, 11 RP Singh/Ishwar Pandey/Jaskaran SinghPitch and conditionsThe Mohali pitch is generally good for batting, though Lions’ Dwayne Bravo and Ravindra Jadeja showed that quality bowling can reap rewards too. Big boundaries, especially square of the wicket, will test the teams’ running between the wickets and fielding. That test will be all the greater in an afternoon match, with a forecast high of 38 degrees.Stats and trivia Kings XI have a win-loss record of 1-4 in their last five matches in Mohali. Prior to that, they had won six consecutive matches at the venue Kevin Pietersen has two fifty-plus IPL scores in Mohali, in as many matches

Kohli fined INR 24 lakh for slow over rate

Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Virat Kohli has been fined INR 24 lakh for his team’s slow over rate in the game against Kolkata Knight Riders on Monday

ESPNcricinfo staff03-May-2016

One more over-rate offence in this IPL will fetch Virat Kohli a one-match suspension•BCCI

Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Virat Kohli has been fined INR 24 lakh (USD 36,000 approx) for his team’s slow over rate in the game against Kolkata Knight Riders on Monday night. Kohli had already been found guilty of an over-rate offence earlier in the competition, when he was fined INR 12 lakh. Another such instance will fetch him a one-match suspension. The rest of the Royal Challengers team were fined INR 6 lakh each. The IPL has usually been severe on teams maintaining slow over rates. In 2010, Kings XI Punjab captain Kumar Sangakkara received a one-match ban for a third such offence, following fines of USD 20,000 and USD 40,000.Opposition captain Gautam Gambhir also picked up a fine after Monday’s game, for breaching the code of conduct article related to “abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during a match”.Royal Challengers lost the game in dramatic fashion, going down by five wickets after Knight Riders had required 81 off 36. Yusuf Pathan and Andre Russell teed off at the end resulting in the asking rate coming crashing down, before Suryakumar Yadav joined Yusuf to take the team home. When Suryakumar swept chinaman bowler Tabraiz Shamsi for four in the penultimate over to bring the equation to two runs required off eight balls, Gambhir showed his emotions by kicking a chair in the dugout. That reaction, presumably, lost him 15% of his match fee.
