Vettori, Guptill topple Afghanistan

New Zealand bowled Afghanistan out for 186, becoming the first team to dismiss five opposition teams in the World Cup

The Report by Alagappan Muthu07-Mar-2015
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsFive matches. Five teams bowled out. Five victories. New Zealand have been off duty the past week at the World Cup, but their ultra-attacking brand of cricket was as finely tuned as ever. Daniel Vettori made it look even more menacing with a touch of spin and a lot of guile. His 4 for 18 eased him past 300 ODI wickets and left Afghanistan all but out of the World Cup.A target of 187 was not going to be taxing, and it provided opportunity for Martin Guptill to find some touch. A 76-ball 57 included some forceful punches off the back foot and handsome lofts down the ground – both trademarks of the batsman when in full flow. Ross Taylor and Grant Elliott, members of a middle order that had not done much in the tournament so far, too made the most of their time in the middle as the hosts won with 83 balls to spare.Afghanistan’s bowlers were easily handled, especially after Brendon McCullum took the score to 53 in the fifth over, but New Zealand’s were a different story. Trent Boult and Tim Southee had the new ball on a string. As usual. Adam Milne racked his pace up to 150 kph three balls in. Nothing new there. McCullum employed seven catching men when Vettori was on a hat-trick. Yawn. New Zealand have been so intimidating on the field in the World Cup so far that you expected all of that. Afghanistan, having traversed 10,000 kms in the last week, walloped by Australia in Perth and barely surviving a cliff-hanger with Scotland in Dunedin, appeared tired and outclassed. At least until Najibullah Zadran and Samiullah Shenwari used their nervous energy to get a few big hits away and created some breathing space. They came together at 59 for 6 in the 20th over, waited for the swing to fade away, Vettori’s spell to end and the fifth bowler Corey Anderson, to push New Zealand into bowling the most overs they have in an innings in this World Cup.The seventh wicket added 86 runs as Najibullah made a run-a-ball half-century, including a six off Southee that landed on the roof, and Shenwari batted through a nasty blow that left a visible dent on the back of his helmet to make a hard-working 54 off 110. Their application should please Afghanistan as much as the lack of it from the others should displease them.Vettori’s first wicket was a happy accident, although it came off the first ball he bowled. He was sneaked into the attack in the third over to allow Southee and Boult to switch ends and the bonus was Usman Ghani playing down the wrong line to lose his off stump. The delivery, though, was a beauty. Tossed up, drifting with the arm and skidding between bat and pad.But McCullum preferred pace with the new ball. This time Southee and Boult were bowling at the ends that assisted their respective away swingers. Boult heightened his threat by coming round the wicket and his captain encouraged the search for the outside edge by providing two slips and two gullies. But Asghar Stanikzai would feel disappointed that he fell into that trap off a short ball that should have been hammered over Martin Guptill, and not half-heartedly guided into his hands.Vettori returned in the 12th over and squeezed Afghanistan further, not that 35 for 3 needed much work. It was a used pitch at McLean Park. It was dry and expected to play slower than usual. But it didn’t have much turn. Vettori isn’t the kind of bowler who gets the ball to hoop around corners anyway. But Afghanistan’s inexperience meant they kept playing for the ball moving away and were consistently found out. As Nawroz Mangal showed when he was bowled trying to cut an arm ball on off stump.Vettori was nagging, his line barely drifting too far from the stumps, although his pace did flit about between the 80 and the 90kph marks. He dismissed Mohammad Nabi, who was playing his 50th ODI, and Afsar Zazai in successive deliveries to cap off a spell that read 10-4-18-4. It was the first time he’s claimed a four-for since June 2009.McCullum the batsman was smash without substance today, but McCullum the captain might think that a positive – if only in private – considering the middle order got some match practice ahead of the quarter-finals.

Comandado porCarlos Sánchez, o time do Santos teve oportunidades com o próprio uruguaio, Pituca e Soteldo.

Tricolor volta melhor

Renato leva a melhor

O camisa 11 tocou rasteiro, no canto.

Prasanth then compiled 65 with Ashwin Hebbar but fell to Rahul Singh soon after reaching his fifty.Rahul also dismissed the captain Mohammed Kaif for 6, and Akshay Chauhan got rid of Ricky Bhui for 1, but Hebbar remained unbeaten on 44 and saw his side home with four balls to spare.Gujarat beat Jharkand by six wickets in a low-scoring game in Bhubaneshwar in which only five batsmen from both sides put together managed double figure scores.Put in, Jharkand lost Shiv Gautam on the fifth ball of the first over. Tirumalasetti Suman and Tanmay Agarwal put on a 60-run opening stand before Taruwar Kohli picked up Suman for 31 off the last ball of the ninth over. Two balls later, Kaul had Agarwal caught for 22. Andhra lost three more wickets and managed 50 runs in the final five overs.Punjab began their chase briskly making 23 in 2.5 overs before Ravi Kiran had Jaskaranveer Singh caught behind for 7 on the final ball of the third over. Inder Singh and Mandeep added 44 for the third wicket as Punjab went past 50 before the partnership was broken by Akash Bhandari in the 11th over. They soon slid from 114 for 3 to 144 for 9, and Mandeep was one of the batsmen to fall after making 63 off 43 balls, with eight fours and a six. Chama Milind did most of the damage taking 4 for 24, including the wickets of Brainder Sran and Gurinder Singh off the first two balls of the final over. Punjab needed only two runs to win at the start of the over and they secured a win off the third ball of the final over.Debutant left-arm spinner Shesdeep Patra picked up 5 for 18 in three overs to help Odisha beat Mumbai by 17 runs in a 15-over-a-side game in Cuttack.Chasing 126, Mumbai lost two wickets in the first over – of Akhil Herwadkar and Jay Bista for ducks – to Deepak Behera, leaving the score at 1 for 2. Shoaib Shaikh (34) was then part of two 30-plus partnerships which steadied the innings, until Patra struck. He picked three wickets in the 12th over, of Shoaib, Abhishekh Raut and Rohan Raje, reducing them to 85 for 7. Patra then ran through the middle and lower order, as Mumbai were bowled out for 108 in 14.4 overs. Behera finished with 2 for 9 from two overs.Earlier, Odisha chose to bat and raced to 33 in 3.3 overs before Akash Parkar broke the opening stand. Raut dismissed Arabind Singh in the 12th over, then Rao was run-out by Herwadkar four balls later, for a 34-ball 48, and Raje then cleaned up Biplab Samantaray to leave Odisha at 95 for 5. Time da virada!

NO ATAQUE!
Recuar diante do Galo, fora de casa?

In-form RCB still in search of first home win

Royal Challengers Bangalore are still looking for their first home win of the season against a confident Kolkata Knight Riders side, who toppled Chennai Super Kings in their last outing

O’Brien: Toss in Bangalore crucial

Big pictureA power-hitting top order in one corner, and an aggressive fast-bowling pack at the other. It is no Floyd Mayweather Jr v Manny Pacquiao boxing fight, billed as the ‘Fight of the Century’, but Royal Challengers Bangalore versus Kolkata Knight Riders has the making of an action-packed afternoon on Saturday if it lives up to expectations.Chris Gayle, Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers, the backbone of their team’s batting, have all been among the runs and have each played a match-winning innings in Royal Challengers’ resurgence that has seen them string together dominant performances in their last three matches, after three successive home defeats. Another important contributing factor has been the cutting edge to the attack provided by World Cup hero Mitchell Starc, who has effortlessly slipped into the role of the leader of the group. These factors make Royal Challengers a slight favourite against defending champions Knight Riders, who endured a painful defeat at home the last time these two teams met. Royal Challengers were staring at defeat at one stage in that match, after their top and middle order had failed, but ultimately finished winners due to Gayle’s patience and calculated assault in the second half of the chase.India fast bowler Umesh Yadav, who did not play that match, will be the key on Saturday along with South African quick Morne Morkel who sat out Knight Riders’ last two matches. The Bangalore pitch has been one of the most responsive wickets for fast bowlers but the Knight Riders would do well to combine aggression with good bowling strategy to stop the reinvigorated Royal Challengers.Form guideRoyal Challengers Bangalore WWLLL (last five completed matches, most recent first)
Kolkata Knight Riders WLLWWWatch out forGautam Gambhir has hit three fifties this season and remains the lynchpin for Knight Riders. But in the last three matches, he has not had an impact with the bat. But if Gambhir can last beyond the Powerplay, he becomes a dangerous player, especially against the slow bowlers with his ability to pierce gaps and use his feet.Mandeep Singh, the Punjab batsman, has played just one innings of significance this season – the 27 against Rajasthan Royals. But it was a very important innings considering Mandeep’s 74-run partnership for the third wicket with de Villiers set up the platform through which the lower order encashed. But Mandeep has been a disappointment otherwise, scoring just six runs in the two other innings he has played. On Friday afternoon, he had an additional solo session after the team left, getting throwdowns from bowling coach Allan Donald. It will be a test of his character next time he walks in to bat.Stats and trivia Gambhir has made five 50-plus scores against Royal Challengers in the IPL, more than any other player. Chinnaswamy stadium is the only venue where fast bowlers have taken two four-wicket hauls this IPL. The seamers have taken taken 29 wickets here, second-most for any venue, just one behind the Wankhede Stadium and Chepauk.

Cooper's explosive batting thwarted by rain

A brilliant unbeaten 84 from Somerset batsman Tom Cooper proved in vain as Glamorgan won their rain-curtailed NatWest T20 Blast match by two runs via the Duckworth-Lewis method in Cardiff on Saturday

A brilliant unbeaten 84 from Somerset batsman Tom Cooper proved in vain as Glamorgan won their rain-curtailed NatWest T20 Blast match by two runs via the Duckworth-Lewis method in Cardiff on Saturday.Cooper smashed six sixes and five fours in his 40-ball innings and a sixth-wicket stand of 74 from 4.4 overs with Lewis Gregory helped Somerset to 159 for 5 from their 20 overs.Glamorgan had reached 43 for 1 when the rain arrived in the sixth over of their reply, which was enough to give them a two-run Duckworth-Lewis victory.Overcast skies and a damp outfield combined to make scoring difficult inside the Somerset Powerplay and Glamorgan bowlers Michael Hogan and Wayne Parnell were producing swing and seam which made boundaries very hard to come by.At the end of the first six overs Somerset were 19 for 2, having lost both openers. Marcus Trescothick departed in the first over and Jim Allenby in the fifth as Parnell returned figures of 2 for 16 off his full allocation.Hogan was even more economical, conceding 14 runs off his four overs. Craig Meschede, on loan with Glamorgan from Somerset, then picked up with the wicket of Peter Trego who under-edged a ball through to the wicketkeeper. That brought together James Hildreth and Cooper, who put on 47 runs in 5.3 overs. When Hildreth departed having made 28 from 31 deliveries, Cooper played a lone hand at the death as he plundered no fewer than six maximums in his blistering innings.A cameo from Gregory saw him score 16 as he combined with Cooper as they scored freely in the closing stages of Somerset’s innings. It was an incredible display of clean hitting from Cooper who went from 27 to 84 in just 18 balls. He was particularly brutal in his treatment of the bowling of Meschede and Graham Wagg, who could not find a way to keep him from scoring boundaries at will. The fielding from Glamorgan became ragged under this onslaught as Meschede, Hogan and Jacques Rudolph all dropped catches, although the latter two were very tough.Having struggled with the ball and in the field, Meschede managed to make a telling contribution with the bat.Opening the batting with Rudolph, he got Glamorgan off to a flying start with 18 runs off just eight balls before he was caught in the deep off the bowling of Sohail Tanvir. That quickfire innings was enough to see Glamorgan get ahead of the Duckworth-Lewis target and stay there when the rain arrived.
