The second and final Test between Zimbabwe and Bangladesh continues to hang by the proverbial thread. Bangladesh are 272 runs ahead with five wickets in hand, but are some way from dominating the proceedings.Zimbabwe fought back manfully in the second session, taking three quick wickets just before tea and adding two more in the final session. They were lucky too, being on the favourable end of two poor umpiring decisions and Shakib Al Hasan’s appalling shot late in the day.Shakib and captain Mushfiqur Rahim consolidated after Bangladesh had slipped to 65 for 4. The pair added 84 until Shakib got impatient, charged at Hamilton Masakadza’s innocuous medium-pace and edged behind like he had in the first innings. He fell this time for 59 off 104 balls, and had looked mostly in command. He was, however, dropped twice in the same region, behind point, on 45 and 48 but ultimately it was his own poor thinking that brought about his downfall.Mushfiqur remained solid till the end, remaining at the crease on 50 off 85 balls, tight in his defensive play. He was also mindful of variable bounce in the wicket, but took it ball by ball, rather than going after the bowling. It was quite different than the start of the Bangladesh second innings, which was nothing short of frenzy.Tamim Iqbal was the first to suffer at the hands of the umpire. The Shingi Masakadza delivery which rose considerably didn’t touch his bat as replays showed; in fact, the ball was quite far from the edge. But he was given the marching orders by umpire Tony Hill, who had earlier given two poor decisions in the Zimbabwe first innings too.Within a few overs, umpire Ian Gould was in action, adjudging Mohammad Ashraful leg-before to make it 18 for 3 when the Kyle Jarvis delivery looked to be sliding down even on first viewing. The replays confirmed this notion. Jahurul Islam was the second wicket to fall, when he prodded at a ball that was quite away from his body, edging it on way to the wicketkeeper.After tea, Mominul Haque gave away another good start and edged Shingi Masakadza to first slip to make it three for the fast bowler. The edge was easily caught by his brother Hamilton, the first instance in which both brothers were involved. Mominul had survived a dropped catch by Vusi Sibanda on 2 and a run-out in the 13th over, but he couldn’t make that count.Zimbabwe looked to be in the ascendancy with Shingi Masakadza bowling quite well. But they suffered without Keegan Meth’s accuracy and were later stalled by the Shakib-Mushfiqur partnership. The home side had earlier taken some control of the game in the first session with the bat but gave it away soon enough.Robiul Islam took five wickets, being Mushfiqur’s go-to man at every juncture. In the morning session, he broke the vital sixth-wicket stand between Elton Chigumbura and Richmond Mutumbami. He continued to be very accurate, unusual for a Bangladesh fast bowler. The other rare trait in this series for him has been his willingness to keep bowling.He found very little support from the two other seamers, as Mushfiqur insisted on using him in long spells. Sajidul Islam and Ziaur Rahman were hardly used, although the latter had Keegan Meth dropped at fine leg by Robiul.Chigumbura hammered eight fours and a six in his 111-ball 86, but he couldn’t complete the century after Robiul wrecked his off stump with a beautiful delivery. Before the dismissal, he got Zimbabwe past the follow-on mark and gave his bowlers a smaller deficit.He added 85 for the sixth wicket with Mutumbami, who made 42. The pair began slowly, but Chigumbura started to find boundaries regularly. Mutumbami joined in, even hammering a six off Shakib.Zimbabwe had gone off to a poor start to the day when Malcolm Waller holed out at deep square leg to a Sohag Gazi long-hop. It was a lucky day for Gazi who added the wicket of Meth, caught behind down the leg side. Gazi finished with four wickets, while Shakib took one. It was Shakib’s show with the bat, though, that was crucial.

As Ranchi debuted as an IPL venue on Sunday, hosting a low-scoring game in which Kolkata Knight Riders got the better of the daunting Royal Challengers Bangalore batting line-up to register a five-wicket win, it was the pitch that was in the spotlight the most. Royal Challengers managed just 115 for 9, but their left-arm spinner Murali Kartik said his batsmen ended just about 10 short of a defendable total given the conditions. Knight Riders allrounder Jacques Kallis also said batting was difficult on the pitch, which “wasn’t ideal for T20 cricket”.”It looked a bit greenish from far but was slightly on the slowish side and double-paced more than anything else,” Kartik said after the match. “Sometimes you never know what is the best total on this kind of surface. I thought possibly 10 more runs would have been a fighting total. One-twenty-five was what we were looking at.”Knight Riders could never really get going in the chase either, and edged home with just four balls to spare. Kallis, who was named Man of the Match for his 41 off 45 balls and 2 for 17, said: “Probably [a target of] 130-135 would have been tough. It wasn’t an ideal wicket for T20 cricket. But those were the conditions given and I think we played better under the conditions than RCB.”Kartik and Kallis were involved in a bit of an exchange over how much the batsmen were backing up; Kartik warned Manoj Tiwary and Kallis about backing up too much in the 16th over of the chase, but ball after ball they kept inching forward until things got a bit heated and the umpire had to intervene.Talking about the incident, Kartik said: “Look, at the end of the day when we [bowlers] miss even by a fraction of a line, it’s called a no-ball. When the lines are the same and the margins are the same, you can’t be stealing a yard or two. I don’t think such things are acceptable. I don’t know how people accept it, I can’t accept it. When I am supposed to be within the line when I deliver, the batsmen are supposed to be within the crease. And again, the margins there are minimal when you look at direct hits and stuff.”The loss leaves Royal Challengers with 16 points in 14 games, behind Chennai Super Kings, Rajasthan Royals and Mumbai Indians on the points table. They have two matches to go, and it could be a close-run thing whether they make the playoffs even if they win both their remaining games. However both these games will be at home and, despite their ordinary record on the road, Royal Challengers are yet to lose at the Chinnaswamy Stadium this season.”It’s going to be a must-win situation for us now I guess,” Kartik said. “And since no one else is going to do us any favours, we need to take care of ourselves. But we are still in a good position, we are still among the top four and hopefully [will register] a couple of wins at home.”

Apesar da titularidade absoluta na equipe de Osmar Loss, o atacante Diego Cardoso, esteve fora na derrota do Guarani para o Santos, última partida do Bugre no Paulistão. O atleta de 24 anos está emprestado pelo Peixe até dezembro deste ano à equipe de Campinas, quando encerra também seu contrato com o clube santista.

Seu empresário Hamilton Bernard, chegou a fazer contato com o presidente santista, José Carlos Peres, tentando a liberação do goleador bugrino para o jogo como forma de análise do atleta por parte do técnico Jorge Sampaoli. Diego também foi responsável pelo começo da virada sobre o Corinthians. Em entrevista ao LANCE!, falou sobre o seu momento no Guarani.

– Fico feliz ao saber do interesse do Guarani no meu futebol e me senti muito bem desde o primeiro minuto aqui no Bugre. Sigo marcando gols e procurando fazer bem o meu trabalho em campo. Quero seguir nessa batida, sempre honrando as cores do Guarani. Quem ganha com isso é o time, o clube – declarou.

Para você artilharia é uma velha conhecida. Como você lida com essa situação? Tem uma cobrança pessoal?
– É verdade (risos). Meu trabalho é fazer gols e graças a Deus eles sempre me acompanharam ao longo da minha carreira. Não me cobro especificamente pelos gols, mas pelo meu rendimento em cada partida. A gente sempre entra em campo pra vencer. E se pudermos vencer com gols meus, melhor ainda. O futebol é um esporte coletivo. As individualidades muitas vezes decidem um jogo. Mas quem vence o campeonato é o grupo mesmo.

No jogo contra o Santos você não foi relacionado porque é atleta do Santos. Ficar de fora fez você analisar a equipe para o duelo contra o São Caetano?
– Todo jogo é um aprendizado. O professor Loss sempre aponta onde temos que melhorar, como equipe e individualmente. Trabalha muito isso nos treinos. É claro que eu gostaria de estar em campo. Acompanhei o jogo com atenção e torci pelos meus companheiros. Mas é muita aflição. Bom mesmo é estar lá (risos).

Você é um jogador que atua em mais de uma posição no setor ofensivo. É tranquilo isso pra você ou tens uma posição favorita?
– Eu sempre fui um cara de me doar pra equipe. Estou à disposição para ajudar da melhor forma possível o time e jogarei como o treinador entender ser melhor pra equipe. Essa polivalência sempre fez parte da minha realidade no futebol e não me incomodo em ter que jogar por dentro ou pelas pontas.

O que você espera para os próximos jogos do Bugre? Pensa em assumir a artilharia isolada do Paulistão?
– Precisamos manter a equipe forte para jogo a jogo evoluirmos cada vez mais. O resultado é importante no futebol, mas nem sempre mostra a realidade da equipe. Espero que possamos retomar o caminho de vitórias, pois isso dá moral pro grupo e nos fortalece para conquistarmos outros resultados positivos daqui pra frente. Gostaria muito de assumir o quanto antes a artilharia isolada da competição, pois entendo que estes gols ajudariam bastante o Guarani no Paulista. Quem sejam gols de 3 pontos e não de 1 ou apenas para descontar o placar.

Warm sunshine, wonderful setting and a former international batsman making the sure-footed, seldom in doubt century that turned Surrey’s slim advantage into a position of strength. And all Ricky Ponting needed to do for most of the day was watch from the sidelines.At 37, Vikram Solanki is one of those veterans whose move to The Oval has earned Surrey criticism from a number of directions – not because the former Worcestershire player is a poor signing, by any means, but for the fact his arrival, and that of others, may have blocked the progress of home grown talent.Well, whatever the rights and wrongs of Surrey’s recruitment policy, watching Solanki in prime form has never been anything less than a pleasure. And in terms of what the acting captain’s first hundred in these colours could do for his new county, the hierarchy must feel he is worth every penny.Surrey are without a win in the Championship, and the odds are against them breaking their duck here with only a day remaining. But this was the sort of dominating performance which they were expected to produce on a regular basis in 2013 – and it ought to do wonders for their confidence for the rest of the campaign.In fairness to Sussex, who have lost their position as table-toppers to Yorkshire, the visitors enjoyed the best batting conditions of the match either side of tea when there was barely a cloud in the sky. And while the pitch remained slow, with the odd delivery still sticking in the surface, there was a clear invitation for Surrey to take control.Solanki, who played 51 one-day internationals for England and is currently leading this side because both Graeme Smith and Gareth Batty are injured, needed little encouragement. He had to find a supporting act, though, and, crucially, a perfect one presented itself in the shape of another middle order veteran, Zander de Bruyn.The pair added 177 for the fourth wicket, de Bruyn ending the day unbeaten and just one run short of his own century.Six members of the Sussex line-up had passed 30 on the second day of this game but only Mike Yardy reached 50. And when Surrey openers Rory Burns and Arun Harinath both perished when apparently established, the impression that batsmen could never consider themselves truly ‘in’ on this surface was strengthened.What is more, the dismissal of Ponting – squared up by fellow Australian Steve Magoffin and caught in the slips by Chris Jordan – for only 13 left the battle for first innings supremacy in the balance. Or so it seemed.Jordan, playing against his old county, Magoffin and Jimmy Anyon combined to produce a real threat. And had Jordan speared a yorker through Solanki’s defences early on, instead of seeing it dug out, it is anyone’s guess how the third day would have panned out. A partir daí, o time começou a jogar mais, criar mais chances, inclusive a que originou o primeiro gol, anotado por Derlis González. A insistência em querer a bola e a quantidade de jogadores dentro da área foram fatores decisivos na abertura do placar. Isso, porém, não exclui os espaços dados nos contra-ataques do América-RN, problema que tende a piorar contra times mais qualificados.

O volume de jogadas de ataque é impressionante, especialmente com a velocidade de atletas como González, Soteldo e Rodrygo, que no segundo tempo fizeram muita diferença. Quem viu o jogo, tinha a certeza de que os gols sairiam a qualquer momento, mas fica evidente também a necessidade de, por vezes, ter um atacante finalizador na área. Com a quantidade de lances pelas pontas, a impressão é de que muitos mais tentos sairiam, algo que ajudaria em duelos mais duros.

Mesmo com carências sabidas desde o início da temporada, o que traz uma ideia de planejamento deficiente, o repertório e o pensamento ofensivo trazidos por Sampaoli e seus comandados acabam resolvendo os jogos. Contra o América-RN não foi diferente, classificação conquistada com o DNA de uma equipe que não gosta de sair de campo sem vitória e com poucos gols.
