ESPNcricinfo’s preview of the 3rd Test between Australia and South Africa in Perth

Daniel Brettig29-Nov-2012Match factsShane Watson returns at a key moment for Australia•Getty Images

November 30-December 4, WACA ground
Start time 10:30 (02:30 GMT)Big PictureSpent. Exhausted. Drained. Cooked. Though most commonly applied to Peter Siddle, these words were also accurate enough descriptions of players on both sides at the end of an epic draw in Adelaide. A mere three days later Australia and South Africa are at it again, on a ground and a pitch likely to offer up a result after two stalemates in the first two Tests. Australia’s captain Michael Clarke has already labelled the match a ‘grand final’, while Dale Steyn spoke for the tourists when he conveyed their desire not to slink away from Australia with the No. 1 ranking still in their possession via the back-door of three draws.Australia’s challenge appears the most pronounced. Having thrown all they possibly could at South Africa across the first two Tests they have nothing to show for it but injuries and a creeping fatigue across most of the squad. This means the bowling attack that has strived so hard in Brisbane and Adelaide will have a decidedly different look at the WACA ground. Mitchell Johnson and Mitchell Starc can both be expected to play, while Siddle and Ben Hilfenhaus have been rested. Shane Watson’s return from a calf problem is welcome, but it remains to be seen how well grooved he is for a Test match having played only one first-class fixture – in which he was injured – since April. Then of course there is the matter of Ricky Ponting’s last Test. Clarke has the job ahead of him to keep his team focused and efficient despite their trials.South Africa, meanwhile, can style themselves as the boxer who has sat on the ropes and allowed their opponent to punch himself out before launching a definitive counter in the final round. While they lack the depth of bowling reinforcements Australia may call on, the return of Vernon Philander from a back niggle and the extra day and a half of rest afforded by Faf du Plessis’ magnificent rearguard in Adelaide suggest this will be a fresh enough attack to zing the ball around in Perth. Jacques Kallis remains an outside chance of playing as a batsman, having done so well under considerable duress in the second Test. A more accomplished and seasoned side entering this series, the tourists will hope to show their somewhat flat displays up to this point are not a true reflection of their worth. It’s a special Test for South Africa, their 200th since unity.Form guide(Most recent first)
Australia DDWDW
South Africa DDWDWIn the spotlightOne of the more pointed reactions to Ricky Ponting’s poor Adelaide Test match was the posting of a Youtube video overlaying his first-innings dismissal to Jacques Kallis across a Ponting endorsement for Swiss vitamins. No-one was more troubled by the sight of Ponting being bowled twice in the match than the man himself, and on the eve of the deciding Test he announced that he was retiring from international cricket. Ponting will bow out at the WACA ground, the venue of his Test debut in 1995, and he has the opportunity to take Australia where they have been for most of his 17-year career: to the No. 1 ranking in Tests.Operating at something slightly less than top gear for most of the first two Tests, Dale Steyn has so far endured one of the leanest series of his compelling career. Perth will provide an answer to whether Australia have blunted him effectively or whether Steyn has been saving his silver bullets for the series decider. The left-handers Ed Cowan, David Warner and Michael Hussey have helped curb Steyn’s effectiveness, and the return of Watson to the top three may actually encourage the fast man’s outswinger. In Steyn’s own opinion his greatest asset is durability, and he has the chance to prove it by bowling with greater vim in Perth than anyone else to have slogged through the whole of the series.Team newsShane Watson is guaranteed to return and Mitchell Johnson is also expected to be included for his first Test in a year. Both Siddle and Hilfenhaus have been left out of the final 12 because of their huge workloads in Adelaide.Australia (possible) 1 Ed Cowan, 2 David Warner, 3 Shane Watson, 4 Ricky Ponting, 5 Michael Clarke (capt), 6 Michael Hussey, 7 Matthew Wade (wk), 8 Mitchell Johnson, 9 Nathan Lyon, 10 Mitchell Starc, 11 Josh Hazlewood.Faf du Plessis may earn a promotion in the batting order after his Adelaide heroics, while Ryan McLaren’s all-round skills may be utilised if Jacques Kallis is not fit. Kallis, however, trained on the eve of the match and a final assessment will be made on Friday morning. Vernon Philander will return after a back complaint kept him out of Adelaide, and left-arm spinner Robin Peterson is likely to take Imran Tahir’s spot.South Africa (possible) 1 Graeme Smith (capt), 2 Alviro Petersen, 3 Hashim Amla, 4 Jacques Kallis, 5 AB de Villiers (wk), 6 Faf du Plessis, 7 Robin Peterson, 8 Vernon Philander, 9 Dale Steyn, 10 Rory Kleinveldt, 11 Morne Morkel.Pitch and conditionsThis year’s WACA pitch is expected to offer plenty of pace and bounce for the fast bowlers, but a little less seam movement than was available for last summer’s three-day affair between Australia and India. The weather forecast is for cool temperatures and the odd shower.Stats and trivia A victory for Australia would hand them the ICC’s No. 1 ranking in Tests, a position they last held in 2009. South Africa will retain top spot with a draw AB de Villiers is seven runs short of surpassing his coach Gary Kirsten’s tally against Australia, his 1134 runs in 10th place on the list of run-scorers in Tests between the two countries Ricky Ponting’s Test match average at the WACA – 41.43 – is his lowest among all of Australia’s major groundsQuotes”We played our heart out during the first two Tests. Now we have an opportunity to claim a series against the No. 1 team in the world with a winner-takes-all encounter. We’ve got nothing to lose. We win this Test and we become the No. 1-ranked team in the world.”
“We want to win the series. We didn’t come down to Australia to draw. We’ve played below what we are capable of but Australia have thrown everything they can at us and they still haven’t beaten us. If we can play to what our potential is, I think we will go home 1-nil.”

Showpiece for hosts, last chance for tourists

ESPNcricinfo’s preview of the second Test between Australia and Sri Lanka in Melbourne

Daniel Brettig25-Dec-2012Match factsShould Michael Clarke be absent, Usman Khawaja will return to Test match duty•Getty Images

December 26-30, MCG
Start time 1030 (2330 GMT)Big PictureAustralian cricket’s biggest day conjures up plenty of memories for the hosts, but only one painful recollection for the visitors. The MCG on Boxing Day was the scene of Darrell Hair’s fateful decision to call Muttiah Muralitharan for throwing, in a match that finished in a comfortable 10-wicket victory for Mark Taylor’s Australians. Back then, the result was entirely overshadowed by anger surrounding Hair’s decision, and the bitterness it engendered was to infect the rest of the tour. This time around there is no such issue burning away, though the ball tampering allegations that marked the latter stages of the Bellerive Oval match provided a reminder that Australia and Sri Lanka seldom oppose one another without something rancorous cropping up.Pushed into the final hour by Mahela Jayawardene’s tourists before claiming victory in Hobart, Australia seek a series win to conclude a year that has been moderately successful if not overwhelmingly so. They remain a team in development, and will take on an even more transitional look on Boxing Day should Michael Clarke not recover from a hamstring strain in time. His absence would hand the captaincy to Shane Watson, while opening the way for Usman Khawaja’s recall. The bowling attack has already been re-shaped, Mitchell Johnson and the debutant Jackson Bird shuffling into the spaces left by Ben Hilfenhaus (injured) and Mitchell Starc (unhappily rested). The Sri Lankans must defy a history of Test match underachievement in Australia if they are to keep the series alive. They have never won a five-day encounter down under, though in Hobart they came close to securing a stalemate. Melbourne and Sydney will afford the visitors pitches more useful to their cause than Hobart proved to be, with Rangana Herath a considerable threat on surfaces offering even a modicum of turn. The greater question for Sri Lanka will be which pacemen can step up to provide wicket-taking support – the lack of an effective pace spearhead has been the overwhelming reason behind their lack of a victory on these shores.Form guide(Most recent first)
Australia WLDDW
Sri Lanka LLWDDIn the spotlightEven if Shane Watson does not walk out to toss the coin on the first morning, he will be expected to contribute more substantially in this Test than either of the previous two. So far since his return from injury, Watson has looked a little out of sorts as a batsman, yet to go past 30 in four innings and struggling notably with Herath at Bellerive. Nonetheless, there were signs in Hobart that Watson is growing into more of a leader – his longer-than-usual bowling stints after Hilfenhaus was injured were critical to Australia’s ultimate success, even if the wickets column did not suggest it. Having played an undersung role in that result, Watson will now want his name in lights. A Boxing Day century, his first in Tests since 2010, would do that nicely. In his final series as captain, Mahela Jayawardene dearly wants to leave a Test match mark in Australia. The current outfit is doughty and persistent, but require an influential score by their leader in Melbourne to put Australia under the requisite pressure to push for victory. There are suggestions Jayawardene may have been distracted by a board dispute in recent days, while the ball tampering episode in Hobart indicated that this is a touring team that does not wish to go quietly. Having overcome all manner of squabbles and snares over his career, Jayawardene’s capacity to cope is well known. He has the Melbourne Test, and its expected influx of Sri Lankan supporters, to give Australia some headaches.Team newsClarke’s fitness remains the major question for Australia, and it appears more likely he will be saved for future contests rather than carrying a tender hamstring into the Test. Bird is set to debut as the owner of handsome records for Tasmania in Sheffield Shield cricket in general and at the MCG in particular.Australia 1 Ed Cowan, 2 David Warner, 3 Phillip Hughes, 4 Shane Watson, 5 Michael Clarke/Usman Khawaja, 6 Michael Hussey, 7 Matthew Wade (wk), 8 Mitchell Johnson, 9 Peter Siddle, 10 Nathan Lyon, 11 Jackson Bird. The tourists appear likely to enter the match unchanged from their Hobart combination, though Dhammika Prasad is on standby for Nuwan Kulasekara, who is still sore after a blow to the ribs in Hobart.Sri Lanka (probable) 1 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 2 Dimuth Karunaratne, 3 Kumar Sangakkara, 4 Mahela Jayawardene (capt), 5 Thilan Samaraweera, 6 Angelo Mathews, 7 Prasanna Jayawardene (wk), 8 Nuwan Kulasekara, 9 Rangana Herath, 10 Shaminda Eranga, 11 Chanaka Welegedara.Pitch and conditionsMelbourne’s weather is forecast to be pleasantly temperate for the week, while the pitch is also on course to be even tempered, if a little lively early on. The ground’s new head curator David Sandurski has likened the Test strip to that played on by Victoria and South Australia in a November Shield fixture, in which the left-arm paceman Gary Putland plucked 12 wickets but Phillip Hughes cracked 158 on his way back to the national team.Stats and trivia Sri Lanka’s one previous Boxing Day visit to the MCG resulted in a 10-wicket defeat in 1995 – infamous as the match in which Muttiah Muralitharan was called for throwing by the umpire Darrell Hair If passed fit, Michael Clarke needs another 55 runs to better Ricky Ponting’s Australian record for most runs in a calendar year Kumar Sangakkara enters the match 40 short or passing 10,000 Test runsQuotes”It’s improving every day. I did a fair bit of running today in the indoor nets. A decision can’t be made today. I really need to wait and see how I pull up tomorrow morning.”
“I think we’ve been through a lot of hostile things in the past. 1995 was one thing, and even after that. I don’t think it will faze our guys at all. If anything that might give us a little extra.”

Broad 'fit and good' for England return

Stuart Broad has arrived in New Zealand “fit and good” to return to England duty

ESPNcricinfo staff30-Jan-2013

Stuart Broad has been out of action since November•Getty Images

Stuart Broad has arrived in New Zealand “fit and good” to return to England duty.Broad has not played since the second Test in Mumbai in November, where his 0 for 60 was his second consecutive wicketless Test. Broad was subsequently dropped for the second time in his career.A heel problem prevented his return as captain for the T20 series, which England drew 1-1 with Eoin Morgan leading the side, before snow denied him the chance to re-join his colleagues in India for the final two matches of the ODI series. The poor weather has hindered Broad’s training programme, so he is glad to be back in warmer climes, arriving a few hours ahead of the rest of the squad who travelled direct from India following Sunday’s final ODI.”I have not done any outdoor running because it has been a bit hazardous at home,” Broad said. “But I feel pretty good and look forward to getting going and excited to be here. With the snow back home it has been tricky to really test anything.”It was disappointing not to get out to India and do some outdoor bowling ready for this tour but we have plenty of time to do some work here leading into the warm-up games and the first Twenty20.”England play two warm-up matches on February 4 and 6 before the first of three T20s on February 9 in Auckland. It will be the first time Broad has captained England since they tumbled out of the World T20 at the Super Eights stage in October.Broad will be hoping for a return to form after averaging 39.72 with the ball and 14.00 with the bat in his last full Test series – against South Africa in July and August. He has also been short of one-day cricket having missed the ODI series with South Africa in September. His overs at the World T20 were taken for 7.42 runs each.Short of match-practise, Broad’s first task is to feel satisfied that his heel injury has recovered. “When you’ve not played cricket for five or six weeks, I suppose you go into a game a little bit unsure,” he said. “I have done quite a lot of treadmill running, and a lot of spinning, so I’m fit. I just need to test out the impact of it.”We’ve got well over a week till the first Twenty20 game, and that should be plenty to get it right.”Broad travelled to Adidas headquarters in Germany to have his boots moderated to help ease the strain. “I have had a bit of adjusting to the foam inside the boot and we will see how that goes outside,” he said. “But I have bowled five or six spells of six or seven overs indoors, which felt good. And you’d have thought indoor bowling would be as big a test on the heel as anything.”I feel fit and good, so where I am at now I feel ready to go.”Longer term for Broad there is the challenge of trying to regain his Test place in what is likely to be a three-man pace attack alongside James Anderson and Steven Finn. It was Finn who initially replaced Broad in India and then Tim Bresnan played the final Test although he is absent from this tour.Broad began 2012 in impressive form with consistent performances against Pakistan in the UAE and then claimed 11 wickets against West Indies at Lord’s before having less of an impact against South Africa and conceded being dropped in India was the right decision.”I’m quite relaxed, and I know that if I bowl well and hang in there and do the right things in training, then wickets come your way,” Broad said. “I had a really good start, first half of the year, and was the leading seamer in the world.”Then I went three innings without taking a wicket in India and lost my place. That happens and it was probably a good decision, looking back, to leave me out.”Finny came in and bowled really nicely. Then I picked up that little injury before the final Test match. Personally, the tour didn’t go ideally to plan. But we won the Test series and left happy.”

Surpreso com titularidade, Jean Mota quer ficar no Santos: 'É time grande'

– Surpreendeu (a titularidade). Ele chegou e confiou no meu trabalho e isso me deixa feliz.

Procuro dar meu máximo no Santos. Deixo para meu empresário resolver essas questões. Meu desejo é ficar no Santos, time grande, time que briga por títulos.

The battle for the final

Sylhet Royals and Chittagong Kings will battle it out in the semi-final to decide the finalist who will play against Dhaka Gladiatiors

Mohammad Isam16-Feb-2013Match factsFebruary 17, 2013
Start time 1800 (1200 GMT)Ryan ten Doeschate’s form will be crucial for Chittagong Kings•Bangladesh Cricket Board

Big PictureSylhet Royals would take heart from the gumption they have shown against Dhaka Gladiators. After Chris Gayle had flattened them with a century, it would have been easier to fade into the background of such a performance. Instead, they took the fight right till the end. It gave them the momentum to take on Chittagong Kings, who beat Duronto Rajshahi to make it to the second semifinal. The Royals would like to continue to play as the underdogs. It is a tag that has suited them so far, although a team that has Dwayne Smith and the marauding Mushfiqur Rahim alongside Elton Chigumbura has enough firepower to knock over a big total. They have some runs due from Paul Stirling, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Mominul Haque. The composition of their bowling attack would once again hover around who they pick between Dirk Nannes and Sajidul Islam. Common sense on a wicket like Mirpur would urge the Royals to pick all their overseas batsmen but leaving aside Nannes hardly makes sense even though Sajidul, his replacement, took three wickets.Kings’ win in the elimination match over Rajshahi would give them enough reason to believe they can knock out the Royals. But they were not tested enough to feel the need of Brendan Taylor, their in-form batsman who left for Zimbabwe. They are likely to pack the team with allrounders, but ultimately a lot will depend on Ryan ten Doeschate and Mahmudullah with the bat. Form Guide(Most recent first, completed matches)
Sylhet Royals LWWLW
Chittagong Kings WLWLW In the spotlightMushfiqur Rahim will again be in the thick of things whether with the bat or behind the stumps for the Royals. His brilliant 86 against the Gladiators showed he usually has the measure when the team is chasing. His captaincy will be tested too, particularly after some of his bowling changes completely backfired against Gayle.
The knockout match would be a huge test for Kings’ pace bowler Rubel Hossain for whom bowling at the death has been quite a struggle. He has done well in one game out of three when they were defending a total, so if such a situation arises in this game, Rubel’s over could be the clinching factor. Team newsPaul Stirling and Dwayne Smith have been passed fit for the game, Smith however will not be able to bowl. The Royals could still go with Sajidul as the left-arm seaming option, despite having Nannes around.
Sylhet Royals (probable): 1 Shivnarine Chanderpaul, 2 Paul Stirling, 3 Dwayne Smith, 4 Mushfiqur Rahim (capt & wk), 5 Mominul Haque, 6 Elton Chigumbura, 7 Mohammad Nabi, 8 Nazmul Hossain Milon, 9 Suhrawadi Shuvo, 10 Sohag Gazi, 11 Sajidul IslamShaun Tait has been ruled out of the match with a groin injury which means Kings are unlikely to break the winning combination from the previous game.Chittagong Kings (probable): 1 Jason Roy, 2 Nurul Hasan (wk), 3 Ravi Bopara, 4 Ryan ten Doeschate, 5 Mahmudullah, 6 Ariful Haque, 7 Jacob Oram, 8 Kevon Cooper, 9 Rubel Hossain, 10 Taskin Ahmed, 11 Enamul Haque jnr Pitch and conditionsA sudden cold spell in Dhaka could reduce the amount of dew during the second innings, though the wicket will still benefit the batsmen. Stats and triviaSylhet captain Mushfiqur Rahim is the third batsman to score more than 400 runs in this edition of the BPL. Quotes “It is certain that the match will be highly challenging for both the sides but I’m confident that our boys would give their best effort in tomorrow’s match.”

“We have to be a lot more positive against Sylhet Royals, particularly with the bat. I think that’s the only change in approach we need to make.”
