Morkel and Steyn exact a carefully planned revenge

On Thursday, at SuperSport Park in Centurion, Morkel and Steyn exacted a carefully planned revenge for the pain inflicted on them by the Indian batting in Kolkata earlier in the year

Firdose Moonda at SuperSport Park16-Dec-2010Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel must remember Kolkata 2010 the same way the United States remembers Vietnam. That’s where they thought they had a chance to defeat an opposition that looked beatable, and that’s where they misjudged badly. They were wounded from all fronts, their morale was broken and in the end, they lost the battle. After their victory in Nagpur a week earlier, South Africa had an ideal opportunity to win the series in the subcontinent. That never happened. They collapsed to 296 on a turning track at Eden Gardens and conceded a massive 643/6 to lose by an innings and 57 runs. Dale Steyn bowled thirty overs and Morne Morkel 26, both conceding 115 runs apiece. Virender Sehwag, in particular, treated the pair as though they were nothing more than cheap rag dolls. Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman followed, although in less manic fashion, and then MS Dhoni joined the party. Steyn and Morkel were left hurting. On Thursday, at SuperSport Park in Centurion, they exacted a carefully planned revenge.”It’s the most important thing not to forget your aggression,” Morkel said after the first day when a mixture of that attacking instinct and ingenious strategy helped South Africa seize the advantage. The match was being billed as a contest between South Africa’s bowlers and India’s batsmen, in particular the openers on both sides, and it did not disappoint. Steyn versus Sehwag was considered the heavyweight fight but it lasted just three balls. The first two were regulation Steyn balls, shaping away outside off and Sehwag dutifully left them. In his next over, Steyn began with a similar delivery, moving away just a touch. Sehwag could not resist. He didn’t care that Hashim Amla was positioned at short third-man for in case he gave in to the temptation. The urge to hit on the up was too tempting and Sehwag went for it. In doing so, he scooped it off the outside edge to Amla giving South Africa immediate reward, even though they were prepared to wait. “We knew we would have to stay calm and patient and that he would give it away,” Morkel said. The middleweight clash lasted a few more rounds. Morkel was unrelenting as he banged in short balls by the half-dozen to Gautam Gambhir, but mixed them up well. He topped 151 kph at times and sent the ball whizzing around Gambhir’s ears in the first over. In the second over he bowled to Gambhir the real crux of the strategy emerged. Two short balls, followed up by a fuller one, and then another. When Morkel, elegant as a giraffe, reached down to save four off his own bowling from the second fuller ball, it was as though he was prophesising his own victory. He almost had his man in the next over when a nasty bouncer took something on the way through to Mark Boucher. Umpire Steve Davis thought it shaved something other than the glove. Morkel did not relent and gave Gambhir no scoring opportunities as the pattern of short, short, full continued. Gambhir survived Morkel’s first spell but just as he was relaxing, Morkel returned from the other end and continued the same trend. Two more short balls, and then Gambhir perished to the follow-up. He was too late on the full ball and the outside edge was comfortably taken by Paul Harris at first slip. The way Steyn and Morkel varied their lengths was crucial to their success. “They weren’t sure whether to go forward or back,” Morkel said. Steyn used the seam movement in exemplary fashion, particularly as he got the ball to go away from Rahul Dravid and in to Gambhir. Morkel’s height allowed him to extract the spongy bounce but he managed to mix the short balls with a range of deliveries that landed on a good length and ones that were full enough to tease the batsmen’s toes. It was that assortment that got Dravid out as he was hit on the pads by a delivery that stayed lower than expected.Steyn came out spitting venom after tea. The over he bowled to Tendulkar immediately after the break covered an entire spectrum. It contained a delivery that moved away, one that straightened, one that moved in, a bouncer and an over-pitched ball. In the next over, Steyn left Laxman aghast by getting right through him and pegging back his middle stump. He also got rid of Tendulkar, who was looking strong in the battle against Lonwabo Tsotsobe, with a ball that straightened.South Africa’s opening bowlers, who have been labelled the most fearsome in world cricket, out-thought the Indians with their follow-up balls. The straighter or fuller deliveries were proving to be the wicket-taking ones but they didn’t forget that the ball India have always been vulnerable against on tour was the short one.The pair has always been revered because of their styles complementing each other and Morkel said they aimed to exploit the variety to their advantage. “Myself and Dale are different bowlers. I’m six foot five but he is a bit shorter. I need to use my strength which is my bounce. I don’t get a lot of swing and shape off the wicket, but Dale does.”While they were dismantling the Indian line-up, some luck also went their way. Suresh Raina, who was considered a target for short balls, ended up edging a length delivery from Jacques Kallis to third slip. After his dismissal a recovery seemed imminent. Even the South African bowlers expected it. “They have a quality top six or seven and we were lucky that Harbhajan was run out today,” Morkel said. Harbhajan appeared confident before he was caught short of his crease by an underarm throw from Mark Boucher.South Africa will be aware that is still plenty of movement left in the pitch, but an Indian attack without Zaheer Khan is a far less scary prospect than one with him. Morkel has some advice for his batsmen when they get they turn out tomorrow. “You need to leave well. It nips about but it’s a touch slow.” First, South Africa have one more wicket to claim but they must sense that the end is close with a debutant and a captain struggling for form at the crease. Then the revenge will be complete.

Woakes slots straight in to England's winning unit

Chris Woakes proved another perfect call-up from England as he hit an unbeaten 19 from No. 9 to secure a one-wicket victory at Adelaide

Paul Collingwood, the England captain, had never seen Chris Woakes bat before his match-winning innings against Australia in the opening Twenty20 and went on the advice of coach Andy Flower as to which position the debutant should take. It proved another perfect decision from Flower as Woakes hit an unbeaten 19 from No. 9 to secure a one-wicket victory at Adelaide.Woakes, 21, earned his chance in the Twenty20 and one-day squads after Stuart Broad’s stomach injury picked up during the second Ashes Test ruled him out of action until at least the World Cup. It wasn’t expected that Woakes would play a major role but he was given an outing against the Prime Minister’s XI in Canberra then preferred to Chris Tremlett in the Twenty20 side. Now he could yet be making a late bid for World Cup selection. His batting talent has been evident in county cricket where he averages 27.24 in first-class cricket with two hundreds and holds a Twenty20 strike-rate of 146.15. However, it was a supreme effort to pull his fourth ball in international cricket from Shaun Tait, the fastest bowler in the world, for six then hold his nerve in the final over. To make it even sweater for Woakes, the six had followed a few verbals from Tait who had tried to unsettle the new kid.”It was incredible,” Collingwood said. “Tait had given him some jip the ball before and he’s just said he was expecting it to be a bit short and he got it out the middle. He thinks about the game as well and that’s crucial.”It was a fantastic performance by him. To be honest I hadn’t seen much of his batting, Andy Flower said he was a serious batter. Graeme Swann was a bit disappointed he was ahead of him but as soon as he hit that six off Tait, Swanny just doffed his cap at Andy and understood why he was behind him. He looks a serious batter as well, you can say he’s a true allrounder.”To have a youngster come in a lead us home like that, I don’t think we should be leaving it up to him. We never like to leave it up to the bowlers. It’s great the bowlers can bat like that, but it’s up to one of the batsmen to see the team home.”Cameron White, Australia’s new Twenty20 captain, found a succinct way of describing Woakes’s hit off Tait. “It was a hell of a shot,” he said. “When England needed a big shot they found it.”Woakes is the latest example of a player slotting seamlessly into this confident England unit and it shows the benefits of having a cohesive unit. In the Test series Tremlett and Tim Bresnan were drafted in with immediate results, while over the last 12 months Steven Finn and Eoin Morgan have also made impressive Test debuts. There was no hiding from the action in the field, either, with Woakes given the first over the match by his captain. He conceded just four but was taken for 14 off the next by Shane Watson and David Warner, yet returned to bowl the 13th and 15th overs for a total of 16 and take the key wicket of Cameron White.”There was a lot of pressure. Even though you only have 24 balls to bowl you have the likes of Shane Watson trying to smack you out the park,” Collingwood said. “I thought when he came back for those couple of overs he was superb at a critical moment. It looks as though he enjoys the pressure.”The victory gave England their eighth Twenty20 success in a row which set a new world record and one that Collingwood believes won’t be touched in a long time. “It means a lot. We always say we want to create history, it’s a new form of the game but, let me tell you, eight wins in this form of the game is something very special,” he said. “It only takes one performance to take it away from you like Shane Watson nearly did tonight. I can’t see many teams getting close to that in the future.”

Format designed keeping top teams in mind – Ratnakar Shetty

The 2011 World Cup’s format was designed keeping in mind the commercial significance of the top teams making it to the knock-out stages

Filling up Indian grounds for non-India games will be tournament director Ratnakar Shetty’s biggest challenge•AFP

The format for the 2011 World Cup was designed to give the top teams the best chance of qualifying for the knockout stage, tournament director Ratnakar Shetty has said.”Economically, we all know that India is the financial powerhouse of cricket,” Shetty said in an interview with . “The exit of India and Pakistan from the 2007 World Cup was a disaster for the tournament. The sponsors, broadcasters, tour operators, West Indies board – all lost a lot of money. The format was changed in such a way that it gives all the top teams a chance to compete. We have gone back to the same format that was used in 1996.”Shetty was satisfied with the improvements at the Wankhede Stadium, one of the four World Cup venues that were running behind schedule. Talking about the Eden Gardens fiasco, he said the BCCI and ICC could not have averted the situation by being more involved. “Unlike in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh where the Boards run the show completely, in India, the BCCI doesn’t run daily cricket. In our case, the stadia are completely managed by the state associations. The ICC has documented the progress of each venue. The BCCI monitored the reports of the venue, but to ensure that the work is completed was the responsibility of the state association.”Apart from security, Shetty identified filling up Indian grounds for non-India matches as the biggest organisational challenge posed by the tournament. “We have directed all the state associations to throw the gates open to the school children to enjoy a good day out. The tickets have been very reasonably priced too. The ICC is running a lot of contests, and free tickets will be issued to the contest winners, so in our capacity we are doing the best to ensure that the stadia will not see empty stands.”Shetty also stressed that the Indian board made a conscious effort to make the Indian grounds more spectator friendly, something that hasn’t been a concern in the past. “To a large extent, the BCCI have taken the spectators for granted, because irrespective of who India plays, the crowds turn up,” he said. “There was a serious discussion in the board to make the stadiums spectator-friendly. We didn’t want to go by just the numbers. Wankhede’s capacity could have been increased, but we have reduced it from 45,000 to 32,000. Similarly the Eden Gardens capacity has been reduced to 65,000. There is more space between the seats.”The toilet facilities, food courts and the media facilities have all been given a massive facelift, so I am sure people will not complain this time. The IPL has brought a lot of female fans to cricket. Female following has tremendously increased, so we have taken all this into account before redeveloping the stadia.”

Pakistan bowlers seal quarter-final qualification

Pakistan made the most of Elton Chigumbura’s generous offer to bat first to secure a seven-wicket victory in a rain-reduced fixture at Pallekele

The Bulletin by Sahil Dutta14-Mar-2011Pakistan 164 for 3 (Shafiq 78*, Hafeez 49, Price 2-21) beat Zimbabwe 151 for 7 (39.4 ov) (Ervine 52, Chigumbura 32*, Gul 3-36) by seven wickets (D/L method)

Pakistan made the most of Elton Chigumbura’s generous offer to bat first to secure a seven-wicket victory in a rain-reduced fixture at Pallekele and rubber-stamp their quarter-final place. The dank skies delivered two huge downpours that meant Duckworth-Lewis made its first appearance of the tournament in another one-sided Group A fixture. With the damp pitch and heavy cloud cover Pallekele resembled an early-spring Headingley and Pakistan’s bowlers thrived in the helpful conditions. They entered the game on the back of a 110-run hammering on the same ground by New Zealand, but rediscovered their focus to reduce Zimbabwe to 157 for 7 when a second rain delay brought a premature end to the innings. Asad Shafiq then helped himself to an unbeaten 78 in his first World Cup match to steer Pakistan to an easy victory.Shoaib Akhtar was dropped after his shambolic showing in the previous match and, having struggled for new-ball scalps through the tournament, the opening pair of Umar Gul and Abdul Razzaq made three inroads in the first six overs which set the tone for the remainder of the day.Razzaq, who was flogged for 49 in four overs against New Zealand, landed the key blow in the first over when he had Brendan Taylor caught behind for 5. Taylor would be forgiven for thinking himself unlucky because it was Pakistan’s calamitous wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal who held chance. Kamran had put down an almost identical one off Ross Taylor last Tuesday but here, to the palpable relief of all his team-mates, he made no mistake. If that was impressive enough, Misbah-ul-Haq’s catch at slip to remove Vusi Sibanda, demonstrated a rare sharpness in the field as he moved swiftly to his right to pluck the sharp chance out the air. With the ball darting around and Gul generating good pace it looked as though Zimbabwe would subside swiftly, but Craig Ervine resisted with a gutsy half-century, finding support from Greg Lamb and later Chigumbura, who made his second-highest score in 19 matches as captain with an unbeaten 32.Ervine was the most assured of the Zimbabwe players but was gifted a life on 13 when Misbah undid his earlier good work by fluffing a simple chance off Razzaq. The dark clouds had threatened all afternoon and finally let rip in the 28th over with a tropical downpour. On most grounds it would have been enough to end proceedings for the day, but a collection of huge covers and an army of groundstaff combined to get the entire outfield protected and play resumed after 90 minutes. The delay freshened up an already sprightly surface and Ervine fell five balls after completing his fifty. It left Chigumbura to try and atone for his earlier decision to bat and he was looking in good order when rain returned to close the innings prematurely, setting a modest target of 162 from 38 overs.Pakistan laboured somewhat early on in a straightforward chase before Shafiq took control. Ahmed Shehzad’s miserable tournament continued when he ran past a flighted Ray Price delivery to fall for 8. He now has a highest score of 13 from five knocks this World Cup which, after starring in Pakistan’s 3-2 series victory in New Zealand that preceded the tournament, is a major disappointment.Instead it was his Mohammad Hafeez who steadied the early innings with 49. After Hafeez fell, Shahid Afridi promoted himself up the order but his search for batting form continued as he landed a couple of sweeps before missing a cut to give an ecstatic Price his second wicketShafiq, in the side head of Umar Akmal, began very quietly and had 5 from 26 deliveries before finding the boundary for the first time. He added 41 from his next 49 balls to bring up a composed half-century and ensure no alarms. After Afridi’s predictable blow-out Younis Khan partnered Shafiq to guide Pakistan over the line and into the quarter-finals with a 54-run stand. It means Group A’s qualifiers are settled and the ICC can only be thankful Group B has been exciting enough to keep the elongated opening phase interesting.Match Timeline
