Liverpool’s Jota disappointed vs Benfica

Liverpool secured their place in the semi-finals of the Champions League last night following on from their 3-3 draw against Benfica at Anfield.

Ibrahima Konate opened the scoring for the home side after 21 minutes, only for Goncalo Ramos to equalise just after the half-hour mark. Two goals from Roberto Firmino in the second half restored the Reds’ lead before Roman Yaremchuk and Darwin Nunez found the back of the net to level things up on the night.

Having secured a 3-1 win in Portugal in the first leg, Jurgen Klopp’s side will now take on Spanish club Villarreal in the next round after they overcame Bayern Munich to secure their place in the semi-finals.

Despite the overall positive result, one figure in a Liverpool shirt who had a fairly underwhelming display last night was Diogo Jota.

With 57 minutes played before being replaced by Mohamed Salah, the 25-year-old had 42 touches of the ball in total, which was significantly fewer than goalkeeper Alisson Becker (61). Even though he got the assist for Firmino’s first goal of the evening, this was the only real positive about his performance.

With 21 goals to his name in 43 appearances across all competitions so far this season, the Reds dynamo failed to even have one shot at goal on Wednesday night.

During the recent international break, the winger was slammed by The Athletic journalist Tim Spiers for an “awful” miss he had in one of Portugal’s games, showing that he isn’t always clinical in front of goal.

Having lost possession 12 times in total last night, the Portugal forward also lost 92% of his duels, gave two fouls away and was dribbled past on one occasion. He also failed to make even one tackle for his team, showing just how ineffective he was off the ball.

This display ultimately earned the former Wolves star an underwhelming overall match rating of 6.6/10, making him one of the lowest-rated Liverpool players to start the match according to SofaScore. Jota’s second-half replacement even racked up a higher match rating than him, despite only playing for just over half an hour.

Taking all this into account, it was undoubtedly a below-par performance from Jota, who may now have put his place in the starting XI to take on Manchester City at the weekend at risk.

'Estou pronto', diz Matheus Matias, atacante apresentado no Corinthians

-Dentro do tempo comum eu espero achar meu espaço. Estou pronto.

Northants ease to comfortable total

Former Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan took three wickets for Worcestershire on the third day of their County Championship match against Northamptonshire at Wantage Road

27-Aug-2010
Scorecard
Former Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan took three wickets for Worcestershire on the third day of their County Championship match against Northamptonshire at Wantage Road.Stephen Peters, Rob Newton and Northants captain Andrew Hall all made half-centuries for the home side, who batted through the day in posting 385 for 9 declared at the close, with the game surely destined to be drawn.Peters top-scored with 75, with Shakib taking 3 for 75 and Alan Richardson claiming overall figures of four for 83 with an anti-climactic final day seemingly on the way tomorrow. After two days ruined by rain, Northants resumed their first innings on 96 for three, with opener Peters on 38 and youngster Newton yet to score.Peters went on to complete a patient half-century off 123 balls as the home side made a confident start. 20-year-old Newton reached his 50 in a more explosive fashion, smashing it off 59 balls including one superb six pulled over mid-wicket off Richardson. He added six more to his tally before his aggression proved to be his undoing when he launched Gareth Andrew to Richardson at deep square leg to end a fourth-wicket stand of 80 with Peters. Peters made it to 75 before being pinned lbw by Shakib in the last over before lunch. Richardson, who took two wickets on the first day, then dismissed Zimbabwe’s Elton Chigumbura (nine) when the seamer forced him to edge to Worcestershire wicketkeeper Ben Cox in the third over after the second new ball was taken.Hall then became the third batsman to make a half-century for the hosts when he clouted his 129th ball, delivered by Jack Shantry, behind square leg for four. He and James Middlebrook survived until tea, with the pair completing a 50 partnership in the first over of the evening session.Hall had reached 65 before he feathered a Shakib delivery to Cox in the following over before Middlebrook, who had made a competent 40, saw his leg stump taken out by the same bowler. However, the ninth-wicket pairing of Northants wicketkeeper David Murphy and Jack Brooks made the visitors attack toil after that in producing a 50 stand of their own.Richardson ended their entertaining partnership of 68 when he comprehensively bowled Brooks, who had blasted 34 off 46 balls. Murphy stayed put for the rest of the day and finished on 36 not out, with Lee Daggett unbeaten on six at the other end as the hosts declared.

Tottenham: Source makes big Di Maria claim

Tottenham Hotspur have moved for Paris-Saint Germain forward Angel Di Maria as an opportunity opens up, according to reports.

The Lowdown: Paratici eyeing free deals…

The Daily Mail, recently lifting the lid on Spurs managing director Fabio Paratici’s transfer plans, claimed that the Italian is eyeing players on ‘dwindling contracts’ for manager Antonio Conte.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-newest-updates/” title=”Tottenham newest updates…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

As the Italian sets his sights on the 2022 free agent market, there is no shortage of potential options for Bosman summer signings, with West Brom keeper Sam Johnstone and Juventus star Paulo Dybala among the players attracting interest.

Conte allegedly wants as many as six fresh faces through the door at N17, as per The Telegraph, so post-contract moves may well be a fruitful source of talent for Tottenham in the upcoming window.

The Latest: Tottenham ‘movement’ recorded for Di Maria…

Calciomercato.it, sharing news on Paratici’s plan, now claim that there has been ‘some movement’ recorded from Tottenham’s side as they eye a move for PSG’s Di Maria.

The Argentine’s deal in Paris is set to expire in June as things stand with this report stating his contract situation ‘becomes an opportunity for everyone’ – including Spurs.

The Verdict: Right man?

Di Maria, who has racked up an impressive career total of 152 goals from out wide, isn’t exactly short of quality – but is he right for Conte’s side?

His regrettable stint at Manchester United highlighted an arguable attitude problem, at least according to their ex-boss Louis Van Gaal, who claimed back in 2016 that he had ‘no self-criticism’ – shifting blame on to management rather than looking inward.

However, former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino did label Di Maria a ‘genius’ just last year, with the 50-year-old clearly being a fan.

According to WhoScored, the 34-year-old has also averaged more key passes per 90 (2.1) over his PSG appearances than any of Conte’s men have managed in the Premier League.

As well as this, only Son Heung-min (2.4) and Harry Kane (3.3) better Di Maria in terms of attempts at goal (1.9) – backing his obvious attacking threat.

On a free deal, he could be a credible candidate, at least for the short term – but it remains to be seen whether Spurs would be willing to match or better his reported £138,000-per-week wages.

John Hastings win ODI call-up for India tour

The allrounder John Hastings could be set for an ODI debut after he was called up to replace his Victoria team-mate James Pattinson in Australia’s squad in India

The allrounder John Hastings could be set for an ODI debut after he was called up to replace his Victoria team-mate James Pattinson in Australia’s squad in India. Pattinson, who was already on tour with the Test side, will fly home due to a back injury that has ended his immediate hopes of joining his brother Darren in the ranks of international cricketers.”During the past week, James has complained of some back stiffness during preparation for the second Test of the VB tour of India in Bangalore,” Australia’s physio Kevin Sims said. “James’ symptoms were consistent with a low back-bone stress injury and scans have confirmed the early stages of a low back stress fracture.”He has therefore been withdrawn from the one-day squad as he will require a period of rest from bowling. He will be closely monitored by Victorian and Cricket Australia medical staff to determine his return to cricket.”The injury is a major blow for Pattinson, 20, who had jumped into Test contention when he was called in to cover for the injured New South Wales fast man Josh Hazlewood in India. However, it has opened the door for Hastings, 24, who was Victoria’s leading wicket taker in all three formats last season.A tall right-arm fast-medium bowler, Hastings is also a powerful striker of the ball in the lower order and has thrived since moving from New South Wales three years ago. The chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch said Hastings, who won last summer’s Bradman Young Cricketer of the Year award, was “a very exciting prospect”.”John Hastings performed very well at interstate level last year across all formats of the game,” Hilditch said. “It is disappointing for James Pattinson to suffer an injury at this stage however it does present a great opportunity for John to show his potential at international level prior to selection for the 2010-11 ICC Cricket World Cup on the sub-continent.”Australia play three one-day internationals following the ongoing Test in Bangalore. The series begins on October 17 and the squad is already without several first-choice players after the selectors decided to rest Ricky Ponting, Mitchell Johnson and Shane Watson ahead of their busy summer.

Man United reignite Issa Diop interest

Manchester United have reportedly reignited their interest in signing West Ham United’s French centre-back Issa Diop.

What’s the word?

That is according to a fresh report from Foot Mercato, who claimed that Ralf Rangnick is keen to acquire the 25-year-old’s services on behalf of new Red Devils boss Erik Ten Hag.

David Moyes’ side would reportedly be prepared to let Diop depart in the summer for around €15m (£13m).

Upgrade on Maguire

United have struggled in all areas this season, although it is their defence which has perhaps let them down the most.

With 52 league goals conceded this season, averaging a total of 1.5 conceded per match, the Red Devils have the sixth-worst defence overall in the current top-flight campaign.

Unsurprisingly, no defender has stood out for United, although Harry Maguire has been isolated for his performances by the media this season for some high-profile mistakes.

It is no wonder that Rangnick, who is set to take up a consultancy role with United next season, is eyeing up a move which would offer great value towards the club’s ambition of bolstering their defensive depth.

Diop, who has been described as a “rock” by Sam Tighe on Twitter, is not as tried-and-tested as Maguire when it comes to receiving the ball under pressure, although he does boast a record of zero errors per 90, which highlights his quality on the ball in stark contrast to the £80m liability.

The French centre-back has become something of a forgotten man when it comes to the Premier League, starting just 29% of West Ham’s top-flight games this season, although it is worth pointing out that injuries have played a massive part in him missing so much action.

As such, it may leave some of the United fanbase wondering exactly why Rangnick want to sign the £13m-rated Diop.

His performance in the Europa League clash against Lyon demonstrated exactly what the 6 foot 4 talent is truly about. He played an outstanding game at left centre-back which saw him make six clearances and three recoveries, all whilst maintaining his composure in possession as he achieved a respectable 86% pass accuracy.

Most importantly, he played a vital role in West Ham’s clean sheet in the second leg of that Europa League quarter-final in France as the Irons advanced to the last four of the tournament.

He could well prove to be a more reliable upgrade on Maguire at United, as evidenced by his lack of errors, although Ten Hag may prefer a left-footed centre-back.

Roach ready for Sri Lanka challenge

Kemar Roach, the West Indies fast bowler, is ready to battle the tough conditions of Sri Lanka and lead his team’s attack during the three-Test series

Kemar Roach is the spearhead of the West Indies attack in Sri Lanka•Associated Press

Kemar Roach, the West Indies fast bowler, is ready to battle the tough conditions of Sri Lanka and lead his team’s attack during the three-Test series. West Indies arrived for their tour on Sunday, having prepared at a training camp in Barbados, and Roach is eager to build on the promising start to his international career. He made a name for himself by roughing up Ricky Ponting during last year’s tour of Australia, particularly a head-to-head during the Perth Test when Ponting had to retire hurt, and Roach has taken 26 wickets at 29.69 in his seven Tests to suggest he can be a fixture in the West Indies side for a long time. However, pitches in Sri Lanka can often be hard work for the fast bowlers and the home side boast a powerful batting line-up including Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawaradene and Tillakaratne Dilshan while they will also be on a high after a successful tour of Australia. The pressure will be on Roach because he has inexperienced support in the shape of Nelon Pascal and Andre Russell with Jerome Taylor and Fidel Edwards still sidelined. Roach, though, is not perturbed by the challenge ahead.”The pitches in Sri Lanka are quite flat but ball tends to swing a bit,” he said. “If you can get it right as a fast bowler, you can be quite successful. I have been working on swinging the with the coach. I still have a little bit of work to do on my lengths, but I’m satisfied with what I got out of the camp. It will be challenging but I’m willing to take on the challenge and do what the captain wants me to do and what is required to help the team.”The West Indies squad has been put through their paces ahead of the trip with an intense training camp and now have a three-day match starting on Thursday to prepare for the Test series.”I believe I have prepared well and I’m excited about the possibilities as I look ahead to this tour. We had a good camp in Barbados and we did some hard work,” said Roach. “It was a lot of hard work but I enjoyed every moment of it. It was good preparation, the ideal kind of preparation, for a tour like this.”The series begins in Dambulla on November 16 followed by two Test matches in Colombo before a five-match one-day series and one-off Twenty20.
