Kervezee sets up rout of Kenya

A round-up of the second day’s action of the World Cricket League Division One in Netherlands

Kenya were no match for Netherlands as the hosts stormed to a 117-run win in Voorburg . A century stand between Alexie Kervezee and Tom Cooper set Netherlands to 229 before a combined effort from the bowlers sunk Kenya to 112 within 30 overs.Kervezee and Cooper came together after Thomas Odoyo struck in the fifth over, and the pair added 123 for the second wicket. Kervezee progressed at more than a run-a-ball, hitting 11 fours and a six before he was trapped in front by a delivery from James Ngoche which turned in sharply. Kervezee, unfortunately, fell eight short of his century. Ngoche struck again soon after when he sent back the captain Peter Borren. Cooper and Wesley Barresi then added 53 to lift the hosts but the lower order failed to put together partnerships as Kenya struck quickly. Jimmy Kamande ran through the lower order to finish with 4 for 36.The chase got off to a rocky start as Kenya lost their top three for 32. The fourth wicket pair of Collins Obuya and Rakep Patel added 48, but that was the best stand Kenya could manage. Obuya’s dismissal in the 20th over, bowled by Cooper, sparked a collapse as Kenya lost their last six wickets for 23 runs. Netherlands recorded their first win after losing narrowly to Scotland on Thursday.Rain in Rotterdam forced the game between Afghanistan and Ireland to be pushed to the reserve day after Ireland completed their 50 overs. Andrew Poynter top scored with 78, supported by useful contributions by Kevin O’Brien and Trent Johnston to push the score to 237 before rain intervened.Afghanistan held the initiative initially as their seamers, Khaliq Dad and Shapoor Zadran, made early inroads to reduce Ireland to 27 for 3. But Ireland recovered via two seventy-plus stands spearheaded by Poynter. Kevin O’Brien departed for 44 before Andrew White joined Poynter to add a quick 73 in 12 overs. Johnston then made a cameo unbeaten 42 off 28 balls to lift the score to 237. Hamid Hassan, who claimed the wicket of Poynter for 78, took 3 for 53.Scotland and rain were the victors in Amstelveen as Canada fell short by 69 runs by the Duckworth-Lewis Method. Chasing 237, the Canada batsmen weren’t quite up to the mark, losing wickets at regular intervals and by the time rain forced a long interruption, they were well behind the par score. The win was set up by half-centuries by Richie Berrington and Neil McCallum, who became Scotland’s most-capped player. Umar Bhatti bowled a tight spell of 2 for 29 in ten overs to keep the top order in check before Berrington and McCallum took the initiative away. The pair added 124 for the third wicket before Rizwan Cheema bowled Berrington for 67. McCallum remained unbeaten on 89, hitting seven fours and four sixes.Early strikes by the Scotland seamers put Canada on the back foot when they began their chase. Rain intervened after ten overs with Canada 49 for 2. They stumbled further on resumption as the seamer Gordon Goudie removed Hiral Patel and Geoff Barnett in one over. When rain intervened for the second time, after 21 overs, Canada were in deep trouble at 79 for 6. They were already 80 behind the par score and Scotland had all but sealed the game. Just when it seemed as if the umpires would call it off and award the victory to Scotland, the rain stopped and the covers were off. The match was reduced to a 26-over contest and the target revised to 196. Canada had just five overs in which to get an improbable 117 and the lower order, led by Calvert Hooper did the best they could to narrow the deficit. On his record, McCallum said: “I don’t play for records and I wasn’t aware of it until I was told after I batted. If you play for any length of time then those things will follow and it’s gratifying. But the main thing is that the team is playing well.”On the match, he added: “We knew Canada would be a difficult game and by deciding to bat first we knew we had to give ourselves a chance by getting a total to defend. Myself and Richie Berrington managed to put a partnership together. In the dressing room we always talk about getting 100-plus stands and it was good that we did just that.”It was a totally different surface from the one we played against the Dutch on Thursday. We knew it wouldn’t be easy up front but we still opted to try and put a total on the board and all the batsmen did well in tough conditions. The top order had to work so hard to take the shine off the ball and keep wickets intact and Richie and I took advantage when the hardness went off the ball.”Scotland take on Ireland on Monday. “We’re very pleased with the way things are going at the moment. We took a lot of confidence from the way we played against India A last week and although the Dutch game on Thursday could have gone either way we’ll take that win, and this performance against Canada sets us up nicely for our match with Ireland,” McCallum said. “It’s a cliche but we’ve not looked beyond this match at this stage. We’ll just take each game as it comes, do the basics well if we can, and if we can do that then the rest should take care of itself.”

Age does not worry Katich and Co

Simon Katich turns 35 on Saturday but believes age will not be a factor as long as he continues to play well

Simon Katich turns 35 on Saturday but believes age will not be a factor as long as he continues to play well. Katich has been Australia’s most consistent batsman over the past year, but he, Ricky Ponting and Michael Hussey will all be in the old-age category for the India and Ashes series.”There’s a fair bit being made of that and you can’t hide from the fact that there are going to be three of us over 35 in the top four or five,” Katich told the Australian. “From my point of view I know I’m older but at the same time I’m as hungry as I’ve ever been. I’m enjoying playing cricket again and my attitude has been the same for the last two or three years.”Katich, who came back to the team in 2008, said he didn’t look too far ahead. “But at the same time I’m not going to think ,’just because I’m 35 it’s over’, because the last three years of my career have been the best,” he said. “As soon as you start assuming things because of your age you start worrying about the wrong things.”Since his recall in the West Indies, Katich has scored 2721 runs at 54.42, with eight centuries, in 29 Tests. In the nine matches before the Leeds game against Pakistan, he posted at least 50.He has two Tests against India to prepare for the Ashes, the main event of the Australian summer. “I’m confident with us playing in Australia, we know our conditions well and we’re looking forward to playing at home,” he said. “Hopefully that will hold us in good stead, but anything can happen.”Doug Bollinger is another player who has performed well in the Test side, taking 42 wickets in his past nine appearances, and he has supported Ricky Ponting’s push for a 5-0 Ashes victory. ”That is the benchmark we can set ourselves and if we can achieve that it would be brilliant,” he said in the Sydney Morning Herald. “Winning 5-0, especially at home, you wouldn’t see me for a couple of weeks, that would be awesome.”After becoming a regular in the team, Bollinger said he felt like part of the squad, although he struggled in the series against Pakistan. ”During the England tour, I was thinking one too many things, certain things crept into my game that shouldn’t have,” he said. ”I probably wasn’t getting as many wickets as I wanted, but that’s what happens in sport.”

Conte makes big Royal decision at Spurs

According to reports out of Spain, Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte has now made another player exit decision amid all the noise surrounding Tanguy Ndombele.

The Lowdown: Conte already assessing exits…

The Italian, currently overseeing Spurs’ meteoric return to form and their chase for 2021/2022 Champions League qualification, is also already assessing the Lilywhites players he wants out the door this summer.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-newest-updates/” title=”Tottenham newest updates…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

As things stand, Conte is set for his first full season in charge over 22/23 and the next window could prove pivotal as Chelsea’s ex-boss looks to reshapes the Spurs team.

The 52-year-old, according to reliable reports, has already made a decision on club-record signing Tanguy Ndombele with journalist Dan Kilpatrick claiming Conte sees ‘no future’ for the Lyon loanee.

Following a latest Spurs development, it appears the Lilywhites head coach has now made another exit decision – this time surrounding defender Emerson Royal.

The Latest: Conte makes major Royal call…

The Brazilian, signed just last summer by transfer chief Fabio Paratici, has actually featured regularly over the last fortnight – starting Spurs’ last two Premier League games and even getting on the scoresheet in a 5-1 win over Newcastle United.

Despite this, Conte has now made his decision, with Spanish sources claiming Spurs and their manager are ‘not happy’ with Royal’s performances.

The report adds that Tottenham’s right-back ‘is going to be one of the players who leaves’ this summer with Paratici’s 2021 acquisition set for an exit.

Spurs are set to demand €25 million (£21m) – the same amount they paid to Barcelona for Royal’s services – with suitors Atletico Madrid, as per this update, actually willing to pay it.

The Verdict: Right call?

The South American, still only 23-year-old, has drawn comparisons to some of Brazil’s greatest ever defenders – including a certain Daniel Alves.

Royal’s potential is arguably still there and his performance against Newcastle comes as a fine example of just how he could still improve under Conte.

Alas, the former Inter Milan manager is apparently keen to sign a more attacking wing-back for his system, as also backed by a January report in The Athletic.

La Liga expert and former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell, speaking to Football Insider after Royal signed for Spurs, claimed Paratici had brought in a ‘perfect’ and ‘relentless’ full-back.

Conte, as per the latest, really doesn’t seem to agree with the former Real Betis star now allegedly closer to leaving north London after just one year.

Newcastle handed Dean Henderson boost

A big update has emerged on Newcastle United transfer target Dean Henderson…

What’s the talk?

According to reports, Manchester United have made the decision to send the shot-stopper out on loan for the 2022/23 campaign.

The report claims that they are willing to contribute to his salary in order to find him a new club for the season, due to his £120k-per-week wages.

A number of sides are said to be interested in the Englishman, with Newcastle, Bournemouth and Fulham all mentioned as possible destinations for him.

Newcastle can get rid of Dubravka

The Magpies must now act on this update by snapping the England international up this summer to bolster their goalkeeping options.

He must be brought in to compete with Martin Dubravka for the number one spot. Karl Darlow averaged a dismal SofaScore rating of 6.47 in his eight Premier League appearances earlier this season, suggesting that he is not fit to push the Slovakian for his place in the starting XI.

This means that Eddie Howe can benefit from signing another shot-stopper to create a competition between the goalkeepers – pushing each other on to improve.

Henderson can be the ideal player to bring in as he has a different set of skills to Dubravka that can make him a useful alternative, whilst he also has caught the eye playing in the Premier League for Manchester United and Sheffield United.

Alan Shearer previously dubbed the £40m gem as a “star in the making”, whilst his ex-teammate Sander Berge once lavished him with praise as he said: “He’s insane. I’ve never been with such a good goalkeeper. One thing in matches, he is almost a defence alone at times, and you feel so secure with him.

“But people have to see him at training. It’s crazy. He saves balls from one yard. Sometimes I am completely speechless by how good he is. It’s like having two goalkeepers in goal with him. He’s awesome.”

These comments show that he has been able to impress in the top-flight, which means that he would not be coming in as an unproven quantity.

He would be an upgrade on the £80k-a-week earning Dubravka in the way he sweeps up at the back. As per FBRef, Henderson ranks in the 95th and 96th percentiles for the percentage of crosses stopped and defensive actions outside the box per 90 over the last year in Europe’s top five leagues.

The Toon number one, meanwhile, ranks in the 64th and 9th percentiles respectively for those two statistics. This shows that the Englishman would be a major improvement on him in that area of the pitch and that is why PIF must bring him in to give Howe an alternative option between the sticks.

Leicestershire edge thriller

A valiant 71 not out from Australian Adam Voges was not enough to prevent Nottinghamshire Outlaws from slipping to their third Clydesdale Bank 40 defeat to dampen their hopes of reaching the semi-finals

29-Aug-2010
ScorecardA valiant 71 not out from Australian Adam Voges was not enough to prevent Nottinghamshire Outlaws from slipping to their third Clydesdale Bank 40 defeat to dampen their hopes of reaching the semi-finals. In a nail-biting finish, Voges could only drive the last ball from Josh Cobb weakly to mid-on for none as Leicestershire sealed a four-run win at Trent Bridge.Voges received little support from his Nottinghamshire team-mates, with captain Chris Read (32) the only man to offer more than a cameo, while Leicestershire captain Matthew Hoggard led the visitors’ bowling attack in picking up 3 for 43. Matthew Boyce’s 60 and 58 from James Taylor had helped Leicestershire to reach 219 for 7 from their 40 overs, with England Under-19 seamer Jacob Ball picking up 3 for 32 in his first appearance of the season. After Luke Fletcher had made the early breakthrough with James Benning caught at cover, Ball picked up two wickets in his second over, with Jacques du Toit playing on and Cobb bowled by a beautiful off-cutter. And the Notts Academy graduate’s day got even better in his following over when Greg Smith chased a wide delivery to edge behind to wicketkeeper Read. But a partnership of 114 in 21 overs between Boyce and Taylor recovered the situation as the pair worked the field and scampered singles, hitting only seven boundaries between them. The batting powerplay yielded 45 of those runs and also saw Boyce dismissed lbw by Samit Patel, while an unbeaten cameo 33 from Tom New, featuring four fours and a six, provided a timely boost at the death, with Taylor yorked by Ryan Sidebottom and Jigar Naik run out.Voges only arrived from Australia at 7.00pm yesterday but seemed free of jet-lag when he arrived at the crease in the 15th over, after Alex Hales, Akhil Patel and Matt Wood had all fallen. And while Samit Patel also returned to the pavilion two overs later, clipping a full toss from James Benning to a diving Naik at midwicket, Voges found the gaps with nudged singles in accompaniment with Read to keep Notts in sight of the required run-rate.Benning’s medium-pace proved particularly hard to get away, and with Notts forced to up the pace in the last 10 overs, wickets began to fall. Read pulled Hoggard to deep square leg and Steven Mullaney edged behind in the former England star’s next over to expose the tail.Despite Voges’ best efforts, his bowlers were unable to contribute with the bat, Graeme White bowled by Naik, Fletcher lbw to Hoggard and Ball stumped off Cobb in the final over. Notts will now need to win both their remaining group matches – concluded by a trip to Edgbaston next weekend – to overtake Warwickshire and claim a semi-final spot.
