Rana Naved-ul-Hasan, the Pakistan allrounder, has filed an appeal against the one-year ban from the national team, and the Rs. 2 million fine imposed on him by the PCB.Naved is the third player after the Akmal brothers – Kamran and Umar – to file an appeal, following the punishments meted out by the board following Pakistan’s disastrous tour of Australia.”What I was told by the cricket board was that my performance in the Twenty20 match against Australia was not up to the mark,” Naved told reporters. “I don’t think it is such a big crime and I hope I will get justice. Performing well in all the matches is not in the hands of a player.”Naved scored one run off nine balls and played out a maiden over from Mitchell Johnson in the closing stages of that match, as Pakistan fell short by two runs.Naved’s appeal will be scrutinized by the three-member appellate tribunal appointed by the PCB, which comprises two retired supreme court judges, Munir Sheikh and Jamshed Ali Shah, and former high court judge Irfan Qadir. PCB has set Apr. 16 as the deadline for all the players to file appeals.Meanwhile, Shoaib Malik, who is in India for his planned wedding, sent a legal notice to the PCB but he is also likely to be asked to lodge a formal appeal. Younis Khan and Shahid Afridi have previously sent letters to the PCB inquiring about their punishments but have been told by the board to lodge formal appeals. “All the penalised cricketers have already been informed in detail under which rules and laws they were penalised. Now they can appeal against the punishments, in the way to challenge the verdicts and pray to waive it,” PCB’s legal advisor Tafazzul Rizvi told .

Kiwis seek another semi-final

Cricinfo previews the Super Eights match between England and New Zealand in St Lucia

The Big PictureThe team who perpetually punch above their weight in global competitions versus the most notable under-achievers of the lot. This is a contest that – barring disasters – should count for little for one of the protagonists, England, but for the other, New Zealand, it will make or break their progression to the semi-finals.The Kiwis know all about the last four – it’s their spiritual home in ICC events, having reached those heights in five World Cups, three Champions Trophies and the inaugural World Twenty20 to boot. And, having recovered from a sound thrashing at the hands of South Africa to squeak past Pakistan in a one-run thriller on Saturday, they will hope they have enough momentum to notch up a second victory, and keep their noses in front of both South Africa and Pakistan, whose earlier clash will have spelt out their exact run-rate requirements before the toss.It promises, however, to be a tall order against a team that (astonishingly by their usual standards) are shaping up as the wild cards of the competition. After their soggy start in Guyana, England have put together two seriously impressive victories in the Super Eights, not least Saturday’s 39-run trouncing of the much-fancied South Africans. With a wide array of attacking batsman, a battery of seamers who use the short ball well, and two canny spinners in Graeme Swann and Michael Yardy, they have men for all occasions, and the confidence that comes with success. If England are ever to break their duck in ICC events, they will surely never have a better balanced unit than the one they currently boast. But for this particular fixture, they’ll be missing Kevin Pietersen due to the birth of his child, and whether they admit it or not, the near-certainty of their progression is likely to dent their competitive edge just a touch. New Zealand know they couldn’t hope for more favourable circumstances as they take on the group leaders.Form guide (most recent first)New Zealand WLWWT
England WWNLLWatch out for…Craig Kieswetter has been a busy second fiddle in the tournament to date. In a measure of the effectiveness of England’s new-look batting line-up, his figures of 105 runs in 100 balls have come at the second-slowest strike-rate of anyone in the top six, but he’s done his job admirably nonetheless, biding his time when both Michael Lumb in Guyana and Pietersen in Bridgetown were batting at full throttle. He’s got his eye in now, however, and as he showed in his debut ODI series in Bangladesh, when he’s gauged the conditions, he can be unstoppable.England know all about Jesse Ryder. Until he put his arm through a toilet window on their tour of New Zealand in 2008, he was the talk of the series, as he and Brendon McCullum linked up in an irresistible partnership at the top of the ODI order. He’s been his country’s top-scorer in the Caribbean as well, although that’s not saying much – his tally of 84 runs at 21 barely sneaks him into the tournament’s top 20. But if his muscle memory serves him well, he’ll recognise and enjoy the offerings of Sidebottom, Broad et al.Team newsIan Butler’s inclusion against Pakistan proved a masterstroke, as he kept his nerve in a fraught final over to deliver victory with final figures of 3 for 19 in four overs. His pace and height proved naturally suited to the lively Barbados surface, so it will be instructive to see how the St Lucia conditions compare. But he’s done more than enough to justify another appearance.New Zealand (possible) 1 Brendon McCullum, 2 Jesse Ryder, 3 Martin Guptill, 4 Ross Taylor, 5 Scott Styris, 6 Gareth Hopkins (wk), 7 Daniel Vettori (capt), 8 Nathan McCullum, 9 Kyle Mills, 10 Ian Butler, 11 Shane Bond.England have been unchanged throughout the tournament, but that now has to change, with their star batsman, Pietersen, returning to the UK for the birth of his son. Ravi Bopara is the natural stand-in at No. 3, while Ryan Sidebottom has cemented his place ahead of James Anderson following his three-wicket haul against South Africa.England (probable) 1 Michael Lumb, 2 Craig Kieswetter, 3 Ravi Bopara, 4 Paul Collingwood, 5 Eoin Morgan, 6 Luke Wright, 7 Tim Bresnan, 8 Graeme Swann, 9 Michael Yardy, 10 Stuart Broad, 11 Ryan Sidebottom.Pitch and conditionsBeausejour proved to be a high-scoring surface during the Group stages, with India tonking South Africa for 186 and Australia taking 191 off Pakistan’s bowlers. Sunny conditions are forecast, albeit with the occasion threat of showers, but it looks like being another venue for winning the toss and batting.Stats and trivia These two teams have previous in Beausejour, for this was the venue of their opening fixture in the 2007 World Cup. New Zealand won the contest by six wickets, but England stole the headlines, thanks to the post-match pedalo exploits of a certain Andrew Flintoff … England have enjoyed the better of their meetings with New Zealand in Twenty20 cricket … but not in the matches that matter. Despite winning three of their four encounters to date, they lost by five runs in Durban in the inaugural World Twenty20 in South Africa, a result that lifted New Zealand towards the semi-finals, and sent England towards an early exit.Quotes”It’s not all hot air and bluster. I genuinely think, for the first time looking at a team, we can actually win this.”
Graeme Swann is rarely short on confidence, but he’s liked what he’s seen from England so far

“We knew we were a little under par but we back ourselves as a bowling and fielding unit, that has always been our strength in any form of the game.”
Daniel Vettori reflects on the gritty display that earned New Zealand a vital one-run win over Pakistan.

Celtic: Postecoglou drops Ideguchi update

Ange Postecoglou has revealed that Celtic have been dealt yet another injury blow, this time concerning Yosuke Ideguchi.

What’s the latest?

In recent comments cited by the Glasgow Evening Times, the Bhoys boss revealed that, despite stating after the 2-1 win over Alloa Athletic last weekend that the central midfielder’s injury was not too severe, the 25-year-old is still in a considerable amount of pain from the horror challenge of Mouhamed Niang.

Speaking about the current condition of Ideguchi, Postecoglou said: “[He’s] not great. I think I said after the game that it didn’t look too serious but I didn’t really get a good look at him. It was a terrible tackle and one that should’ve been addressed by the referee on the day. He hasn’t come out of it too well and he’ll be missing for a little bit.

“He’s still pretty painful. Again, I know the kind of character he is so for him to stay down and have come off I knew it was significant. I was optimistic it wasn’t anything too bad but, as everyone saw from the footage, it was a tackle that should never have happened and should’ve been addressed on the day.”

Postecoglou will be seething

With Celtic having brought in three central midfielders this winter – in order to provide greater depth in the position ahead of the second half of the Premiership campaign – the fact that both Callum McGregor and Ideguchi have already been sidelined as a result of injury after just two games since the conclusion of the winter break is sure to have left Postecoglou seething.

Indeed, with David Turnbull still out with a hamstring injury and Tom Rogic being called up to international duty with Australia, the 56-year-old Hoops manager has been left considerably short in the middle of the park once again, with only James McCarthy, Nir Bitton and Ismaila Soro – none of whom have been first-team regulars under Postecoglou – in addition to winter signings Matt O’Riley and Reo Hatate, currently being available for selection.

And, with some extremely challenging fixtures coming up for the Bhoys in the next 14 days, including the Old Firm clash on February 2, the fact that Celtic are still short of options in central midfield despite their transfer business this month will undoubtedly come as a gutting blow to the Greek-Australian manager – who must be cursing his bad luck regarding injuries.

West Indies crash out to ruthless Australia

West Indies saved their worst for last as they were knocked out of their home tournament with a crushing six-wicket defeat by Australia

West Indies saved their worst for last as they were knocked out of their home tournament with a crushing six-wicket defeat by Australia. The hosts were in trouble as soon as the captain Chris Gayle fell second ball and flopped to 105, which their unbeaten opponents eased past in 16.2 overs.Australia’s next engagement is Friday’s semi-final against Pakistan while Sri Lanka, who qualified in the first game of the day in St Lucia, face England on Thursday. Sri Lanka’s five-wicket victory over India left West Indies needing to win by 24 runs to reach the last four ahead of Kumar Sangakkara’s side, but that quickly proved impossible. All Michael Clarke’s men needed to do to qualify on top of Group F was avoid a heavy loss. Instead they produced another muscular performance as they chase their first global Twenty20 title.David Warner blasted four boundaries and a huge six over long-on in 12 balls to kick-start the pursuit. He fell for 25 when edging Jerome Taylor and when Shane Watson (5) played-on to Sulieman Benn in the next over the hosts started to wonder. The slim hope was brief as Brad Haddin took over once he got comfortable to secure the result and give Australia their fifth win in the tournament. Haddin finished with 42 off 46, departing a ball before Gayle delivered five wides to end the match. David Hussey was 10 not out as the tourists finished at 109 for 3.The only worry for Australia entering the next stage is the ability of Clarke to lift the pace when required. Given a risk-free opportunity to show some muscle, he chipped the ball around in his usual style to collect 16 from 24 before being run-out by Dwayne Bravo’s direct hit from backward point.West Indies did not recover after losing Gayle, who played on to Dirk Nannes, and Australia’s well-rounded attack picked off his team-mates with ease as the innings ended six balls early. West Indies slumped to 60 for 5 in the 10th over as they were out-gunned, with Mitchell Johnson collecting 2 for 22, before the legspinner Steven Smith snuffed out any chance of a revival. Smith was on a hat-trick when he removed Kieron Pollard and Darren Sammy on the way to an impressive 3 for 20.Ramnaresh Sarwan, the No. 3, tried to hold the innings together with 26 off 32 balls, but there was too much damage at the other end and he exited in the 15th over. Nikita Miller (10 not out) and Benn (9) were left to add 20 for the last wicket to take West Indies to triple figures. The other opener Shivnarine Chanderpaul (24) raised the rate after Gayle’s exit before attempting to force Johnson down the ground, where David Hussey dived for an athletic take at mid-on. West Indies were 52 for 3 when Bravo was unlucky to be run out for 6 after Sarwan drove back to Johnson and the ball brushed the bowler’s fingers to ricochet on to the stumps. An over later Narsingh Deonarine hadn’t scored as he found Michael Hussey at deep square leg to give Smith his first wicket.Johnson’s second came with Denesh Ramdin’s edge behind on 1 and Pollard was stumped from a beautiful ball from Smith, who confused the batsman with a drifting legspinner. Smith then caught-and-bowled Sammy and when Sarwan fell to David Hussey (2 for 3), West Indies’ chances of a home success were gone.

ENIC source makes Spurs sale claim

Speaking to The Athletic, a ‘source close’ to Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy and majority club owner Joe Lewis of ENIC has made a possible Lilywhites sale claim.

The Lowdown: Tottenham takeover debate…

After Levy played host to entrepreneur Forrest Li back in December, rolling out the red carpet at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, many people within the club have apparently been wondering whether he could be about to become their ‘new boss’ (The Athletic).

The Singaporean entrepreneur was Spurs’ esteemed guest at the end of last year, even meeting both senior Lilywhites staff and players at Hotspur Way after attending a home game.

After Li’s attendance at Spurs, prompting debate as to whether both Levy and the ENIC group could sell Tottenham eventually, a source close to them has now commented on exactly that.

The Latest: Source close to ENIC makes claim…

Speaking to The Athletic, the source says that it is a ‘question of when’ – citing that Levy ‘has said’ he is building Spurs to eventually sell it, even despite the fact Spurs would not describe themselves as a club for sale.

“It has always been a question of when,” said the source apparently close to both Levy and ENIC founder Lewis.

“Daniel has said that he is building this to sell it. But there’s hardly a club in the Premier League that isn’t for sale at the right price.”

The Verdict: Promising message?

Despite this message, The Athletic go on to state that ENIC’s sky-high valuation of Tottenham is estimated at around £3 billion, which is £2.3 billion for the shares plus the extra £700 million of total club debt.

These numbers, despite Li’s $8.5 billion (£6.2 billion) net worth, would most likely deter an outright takeover bid and instead result in the purchase of a minority Spurs stake.

However, after this source’s claim from a reliable outlet, a gradual investment into Spurs which could eventually result in a full sale surely can’t be ruled out in years to come.
