Crystal Palace linked to Zambo Anguissa

Crystal Palace manager Patrick Vieira is reportedly plotting to hijack midfielder Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa’s move to Napoli.

What’s the story?

The 25-year-old moved to the Italian giants on loan for Fulham with an option to buy over the summer amid interest from the Eagles, but Vieira is hoping to persuade him to join the capital club at the second time of asking.

According to The Sun, the French tactician is still frustrated at his failed attempts to sign Anguissa in the previous window, although he hasn’t given up hope of adding the Cameroon international to his ranks.

The report states that: “The Eagles boss is still smarting that he failed to land Anguissa, 25, last summer when Serie A Napoli stepped in to take him and also offered an option to buy from Fulham.

“However, Vieira hopes he can persuade his money men to go big next time and land the powerful all-action star.”

It goes on to state that Fulham are hoping to receive a £20m fee for Anguissa’s services, although with his contract set to expire in the summer of 2022, they could settle for significantly less.

Vieira plots Crystal Palace move

Since moving to the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona in June, Anguissa has been one of the standout performers in Sere A, playing a pivotal part in Napoli’s rise to the top of the table.

As per WhoScored, the tough-tackling midfielder has averaged two tackles per league game, 1.1 interceptions and 1.3 clearances for Luciano Spalletti’s charges.

But he’s also heavily contributed to the Azzurri’s attacking play as well. In his ten top-flight appearances, Anguissa has averaged 0.9 key passes, a whopping 2.3 dribbles and a 91.5% passing accuracy.

His eye-catching displays on Italian shores have caught the eye of several impressed onlookers, including his manager.

“That kind of physicality and stamina is normal in the Premier League, whereas in Italy we tend to favour other characteristics. We were lacking that aspect at Napoli, so he stands out here,” said Spalletti.

“He always comes into the locker room and talks about what happened in the first half, what was going on around his position, paying close attention to the movements that the opposition do. He is very tactically intelligent.”

With on-loan midfielder Conor Gallagher potentially departing at the end of the campaign in order to return to parent club Chelsea, the £47,000-per-week Anguissa could be the ideal replacement. With that in mind, they must secure his services.

Agarkar and Kartik dropped

The Indian board has named a 14-member squad for the Asia Cup that contains no surprises

The Indian board has named a 14-member squad for the Asia Cup that contains no surprises. The only decision that was remotely arguable was the inclusion of Parthiv Patel as a specialist wicketkeeper, at the expense of a back-up batsman. The team management has recently emphasised that Rahul Dravid will keep wicket in one-dayers, which means that if any of the seven batsmen get injured, there will be no replacement, and either Patel or an extra bowler will play. Hemang Badani, Rohan Gavaskar and Ramesh Powar, the contenders for that slot, have all been omitted.Badani, Gavaskar and Powar do have the consolation of having been named in the India A squad set to tour Zimbabwe later this month. But Ajit Agarkar and Murali Kartik have not even got that, being left out of both the senior and A squads. Explaining this decision, SK Nair, the board’s secretary, said: “They [Agarkar and Kartik] have got enough opportunities, and are part of the national set-up. We wanted to give newer players a chance in the India A side.” Kartik, who is hardly any more established than the likes of Badani, Sairaj Bahutule and Aakash Chopra, may not be too impressed by this explanation. The India A squad will be captained by Bahutule and coached by Sandeep Patil and includes, among a host of promising players, the Tamil Nadu wicketkeeper, Dinesh Karthik, Delhi’s prolific opener Gautam Gambhir, and Mumbai’s tearaway fast bowler Munaf Patel.Indian squad for Asia Cup

Is there cause for English pessimism?

Six sessions remain in which the destination of the Ashes will be decided, and England must surely believe that the litany of surprises that have been strung out across this summer have finally run their course

It’s happening again. That nagging, gnawing, pit-of-the-stomach doubt that only the most gripping Test series can serve up. Six sessions remain in which the destination of the Ashes will be decided, and England – with every single historical precedent weighted in their favour, including one from their most recent victory at Lord’s – must surely believe, deep down, that the litany of surprises that have been strung out across this summer have finally run their course. But where there is uncertainty, English pessimism is sure to take root, and having watched their own lower-order tee off to contemptuous effect on a pitch supposedly prepared by Doctor Faustus, the sight of Australia’s openers following suit to the tune of 80 runs in 20 overs was all too much for the umbrella-chewing fraternity of English sports-fans.The 2009 Ashes has lacked the class, the 24-7 tension, and, yes, the unfettered jingoism that made the 2005 summer so unforgettable, but the peaks and troughs on display have, if anything, been all the more marked. Which is all the more reason to wonder if a world-record chase – another 466 required in a minimum of 180 overs – could somehow prove attainable. They thought it was possible back in July after all, when Australia were set a hefty 522 to extend their 75-year hegemony at Lord’s, and thanks to a battling partnership from Michael Clarke and Brad Haddin, reached 313 for 5 at the close of the fourth day before Andrew Flintoff stormed in on the fifth to up-end them 115 runs short. But Flintoff has not been the same force since – his only subsequent wicket in nearly 50 overs was the No. 11, Ben Hilfenhaus, in Australia’s first innings on Friday – and 233 runs per day is not a big ask in any version of international cricket.Jonathan Trott has done an astounding job at dispelling the doubters this week – nobody in their wildest imaginations could have predicted he would exactly maintain his season’s average of 80 in his maiden Test performance – but when he was asked if an England victory was in the bag, all of his soothing powers had clearly been expended at the crease.”Until you’ve taken the tenth wicket in the second innings it’s always a game of the unknown,” he said. “There are so many variables in the game of cricket, it’s never a foregone conclusion at all. We want to do as well as we can, break it down, and have a good first hour tomorrow to set the game up from there.”To be fair, England as a unit were not especially downcast as they left the field on Saturday evening. Seeing as Steve Harmison had bowled a grand total of four overs in the first innings, the shiny hard new ball was never likely to be their most incisive weapon, especially when Stuart Broad beat, and then found, the edge with a brace of offcutters in his first over. Australia survived all the same, but as Marcus North – the unlikely star of their bowling performance – admitted, they had seen little to suggest that they’ve got the measure of the conditions.”History is against us,” said North. “It’s too early to look that far ahead, because there’s a lot of cricket to be played. What you’ll see tomorrow is 11 guys who have got a lot of character to show, and they are going to give everything for every contest for every over. Hopefully that can lay the foundation to give us a chance.”The first objective was to get through tonight unscathed and Simon and Watto did that superbly,” he said. “To walk off at 0 for 80, it’s the position we needed to be in, if we can start well tomorrow, get to lunch, and reassess things from there. It’s a massive target to get, but the best thing we can do is not look too far ahead. We’ve given ourselves the opportunity to have that target in sight at some stage.”As for Lord’s, that performance will doubtless weigh on the minds of England’s fans on a packed fourth day at The Oval, but can Australia go one better than that heroic endeavour? “We can take a lot out of all our innings through the series,” said North. “We batted well at Lord’s with some big partnerships, and laid some foundations to give us some opportunity to chase that target down.”But this is a different Test, different conditions, and again we’ll have to show some character,” he said. “Clarke and Haddin did that in that Test, and we’ll have to show some of the same courage and determination tomorrow. Everyone has got the same attitude that I’ve got. The guys are as positive as they can be. It’s a huge task ahead. It’s small steps at a time.”But if omens are what Australia seek – and frankly, in the circumstances, why on earth wouldn’t they – then they can turn for inspiration to two first-class fixtures of contrasting fortunes. In the former, in February 1992, Australia’s current chairman of selectors, Andrew Hilditch, hit a century, and their coach, Tim Nielsen, shared in the winning stand, as South Australia chased 506 to beat Queensland in the Sheffield Shield. And then, 12 years later in Gurgaon, England A failed to defend 501 against South Zone in the Duleep Trophy. Kevin Pietersen was a member of that beaten team, as was England’s current wicketkeeper, Matt Prior. It’s all stacked up, but is it ready to topple?

Casos de Alan Cardoso (lateral-esquerdo), Andrey (volante), Caio Monteiro (atacante), Evander (meia), Mateus Vital (meia), João Pedro (goleiro), Ricardo (zagueiro), Bruno Cosendey (volante), Paulinho (atacante) e Paulo Vitor (atacante).

Confio bastante no potencial desse grupo – afirmou o técnico Marcus Alexandre.

Tottenham want Everton ace Pickford

Many Everton fans have been left erupting as some transfer news emerged on Jordan Pickford.

As per The Daily Telegraph, Antonio Conte now wants to sign the goalkeeper for Tottenham Hotspur, and sees him as the ideal successor to Hugo Lloris.

Of course, Pickford would be a difficult player to replace, given that he is very much Rafa Benitez’s number one and has not missed a minute of Premier League football so far this season when he has been available (Transfermarkt).

It would not be ideal either to sell him to a rival in the top flight, and moving to Spurs would not exactly be a big step up for Pickford, given that there are only two places between them in the league at the moment.

Nonetheless, as a full England international as well, the Goodison Park faithful should be demanding a huge transfer fee for him, otherwise opting not to sell him at all.

Crystal Palace: Fans react to pre-Villa travel update

Crystal Palace shared important travel details for supporters ahead of Saturday’s clash with Aston Villa on their official Twitter channel on Thursday evening, and the club’s post has duly had plenty of Eagles and Villa fans talking.

The Eagles are yet to lose at Selhurst Park under Patrick Vieira and will be hoping to continue that run when they host Steven Gerrard’s side on Saturday afternoon. A win could lift Palace up into sixth in the Premier League on 19 points, with referee Michael Salisbury set to take charge of his first top-flight fixture.

However, the club have urged fans to arrive at the stadium with plenty of time to spare, as train disruptions are expected. Trains to Selhurst and Thornton Heath stations will be limited prior to the game due to engineering works, and they will be shut following the fixture.

Palace fans react

Palace posted all the essential information on their website and shared details on Twitter. Here is what these disgruntled Eagles supporters had to say in reply, with one labelling it as ‘important news’ for those whose travel plans could be disrupted.
