Wayne Parnell, the left-arm fast bowler, has become the youngest player to be handed a national contract by Cricket South Africa (CSA). Parnell led the Under-19 team to the final of the World Cup in Malaysia last year and was fast-tracked to the national team during the one-day portion of the tour of Australia this season.Parnell is the 17th player to be handed a central contract – which runs till April 30, 2010 – by the board. Fellow left-arm seamer Lonwabo Tsotsobe was also contracted when CSA announced its list of 16 players last month.”Wayne has come through the CSA structures since he played Bakers Mini Cricket as a 10-year-old, and has always shown that he is capable of converting his considerable talent into results,” Gerald Majola, CSA’s chief executive, said. “He has continued to impress since being included in the Proteas’ ranks this season. His fast left-arm swing bowling, very useful lower-order batting and excellent temperament will make him a Proteas’ asset for years to come.”Parnell has played one ODI and two Twenty20 internationals for South Africa. In five SuperSport Series matches for the Warriors this season he has taken ten wickets. He said he was delighted with his rapid rise.”I was still at school 15 months ago and, although I have always had ambitions of playing for South Africa somewhere down the line, I never imagined that it could happen so quickly,” Parnell said. “I am deeply indebted to Ashwell Prince and Robbie [Robin] Peterson for the help they have given me at the Warriors to get my professional career off to a sound start. Since I have been part of the Proteas squad, Vinnie Barnes has also helped me a lot with my bowling.”

O restante do time é sem surpresas: Cássio; Fagner, Balbuena, Pedro Henrique e Guilherme Arana; Gabriel e Maycon; Marquinhos Gabriel, Rodriguinho e Clayson; Jô.

Eze ‘ahead of schedule’ on injury recovery

Crystal Palace attacker Eberechi Eze could be set to return to action quicker than first anticipated, according to journalist Tom Barclay.

The Lowdown: Out since May

The 23-year-old enjoyed a brilliant maiden season at the Eagles with 10 goal involvements in his debut Premier League campaign following his move from QPR for £19.5m. However, the player suffered a serious Achilles injury in training back in May and hasn’t played since, with scans revealing that he could face between six to eight months of rehabilitation.

It has been reported that Eze was in Gareth Southgate’s plans for his England squad for the European Championship before he got injured in training.

The Latest: Eze ahead of schedule for a return

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Barclay has suggested that Eze’s return to action may not be too far away, but advised caution over reintroducing him to the fold due to the nature of the injury.

The journalist said: “I’m told there is a good chance that there’s a good chance actually that he’s ahead of schedule on his return. Achilles injuries are bad injuries, they can keep you out for a long time and they can affect you going forward.”

The Verdict: Great news but don’t rush him back

Right now, rushing Eze back is something Viera should avoid given Palace’s decent start to the season. They currently sit 14th in the Premier League table but have taken points off Brentford, West Ham United, Tottenham Hotspur, Brighton and most recently Leicester City.

Summer signings Odsonne Edouard and Michael Olise have already made their mark, whilst Chelsea loanee Conor Gallagher has caught the eye as Viera’s number 10, with two goals in the 2-2 draw with West Ham in August.

If Palace are to remain in the Premier League and potentially flirt with the top half or even the European places, having their best players available for selection is a must. Eze’s return will obviously be most welcome given his impact last season but, as Barclay has warned, the Eagles must not rush him back prematurely and risk aggravating the injury again.

Newcastle weighing up manager options

Keith Downie has provided a fresh, exciting Newcastle update regarding the potential appointment of Paulo Fonseca…

What’s the talk?

The Sky Sports journalist sent out a tweet stating that “the consortium” have not decided on the Portuguese head coach as of yet.

Steve Bruce was relieved of his duties earlier this week and PIF have held talks with Fonseca over a potential move to Tyneside, although Downie has now revealed that they are yet to conclude their search.

The journalist tweeted on Thursday evening: “Newcastle’s new owners held talks with Paulo Fonseca remotely yesterday, but the consortium also want to speak to further candidates before deciding who will replace the departed Steve Bruce.”

Buzzing

This exciting update on the club’s plans will surely leave Newcastle fans buzzing as it shows that PIF are going with a measured, calculated approach instead of rushing into all of their decisions. They have not arrived at St James’ Park with no football knowledge to make quick changes all over the place as if they are playing Football Manager.

PIF are willing to take their time and ensure that they make the best possible appointment. With Newcastle currently 19th in the Premier League, they need to focus on avoiding relegation before thinking about pushing on to the next step and climbing towards the top of the table.

This is why the selection of Bruce’s replacement is crucial for the club as they need to bring in someone who can get the best out of the current squad to lead them into a position where they can potentially attract a higher grade of player in January, which Newcastle fans would surely love.

Whether Fonseca is the man for that job remains to be seen, but Magpies fans will be buzzing that the owners are not just going with the first manager they’ve contacted. It makes sense to weigh up all the possible options before making a final decision and it will be interesting to see who else is considered in regards to the vacant position.

This will hopefully mean that PIF do not make the wrong call as they are set to collect as much information as possible. Therefore, Newcastle fans will be buzzing with this approach from the owners as it shows that they are doing their due diligence and leaving no stone unturned to make sure the club has the best possible tools to avoid playing in the Championship next season.

Full statement of PCB chairman Ijaz Butt

Full statement of PCB chairman Ijaz Butt on the removal of Pakistan as co-hosts of the 2011 World Cup

09-May-2009STRIPPING PAKISTAN’S RIGHT TO CO-HOST ICC CRICKET WORLD CUP, 20111.On 17 April 2009, a meeting of ICC Executive Board was convened at Dubai wherein being a Full Member, PCB was also invited. The Agenda of the meeting consisted inter alia Management Reports/Items including Lahore Incident, Incident Report, Security Issues for International Cricket and other Issues arising from the Lahore Incident. Along with some other points, the agenda of this meeting consisted “Safety and Security – Post Lahore Incident i.e. Liberty Chowk attack on Sri Lanka team”, Issues (other than security) arising from Lahore Incident.2.Foreseeing that the Executive Board Meeting was being convened after the unfortunate and tragic incident of Liberty Chowk, PCB sent a working paper to be placed before the Meeting.3.During the meeting, when security and safety issues regarding CWC 2011 was being discussed in the light of Lahore incident, views of Captain of Sri Lanka Team Mahela Jayawerdene and ICC official Chris Broad were presented; both of them were part of the team and officials who were attacked in Lahore. Unfortunately, the interview CD of the bus driver of Sri Lanka team that PCB had sent to ICC was never presented at the meeting. Rather, its transcript was circulated by e-mail to members after the meeting.4.PCB did not get an opportunity to explain its position and in a slip shod manner, a decision was passed by at the Executive Board meeting whereby PCB was stripped off its right to Co-host CWC 2011. As claimed the basis of this decision were the safety and security concerns.5.It is very surprising that this decision was passed in a meeting which was not even authorised to do so. As per procedure, it is the IDI Board and not the Executive Board that is only authorized to make recommendation to the Meeting of Members of ICC which is the Annual Conference and which is alone authorized to take decision on it. The ICC Executive Board in which this decision was made on 17th April, has purposed to exercise a power which vests only in IDI.6.PCB has not yet received the minutes of the said meeting of Executive Board, therefore the exact tenure of the decision is not known. But in reality, the decision of ICC is actually being acted upon. We can see that the Central Organizing Committee (which originally comprised of representatives of all 4 Co-hosts) convened its meeting in Mumbai wherein PCB was not invited.7.The Executive Board, while taking this decision, completely failed to take into account that the law and order situation in the entire sub-continent is not exemplary;a.Bangladesh recently faced mutiny by its armed forces and refused to host Pakistan on accounts of security concerns which resulted in cancellation of Pakistan Series in Bangladesh in March 2009.b.Sri Lanka is embroiled in a long standing civil warc.India due to law and order situation had to relocate IPL Series to South Africa although the official reason given is IPL schedule clash with the national elections. Recently Australia refused to send its Tennis Team to India for Davis Cup which was due to be held in Chennai, India. If security and safety was the only reason, no security assessment of the other three co-hosts has been done.8.Under the Host Agreement, prior to taking any decision on relocation of matches, PCB should first have been given an option to remedy the situation. This was never done.Pakistan Cricket Board has yesterday 08 May 2009 issued a Legal Notice to President ICC through Mr. Mark Gay of DLA Piper, London who is well known in the field of sports legal issues and has also previously represented PCB. He is being assisted by PCB’s Legal Advisor Mr. Taffazul Rizvi. In the Legal Notice ICC has been asked to rescind the decision of the Executive Board being ultra vires and void. We have also informed ICC that we will be shortly referring the matter for determination by an arbitral tribunal appointed in accordance with the Rules of the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, Switzerland under the ICC Dispute Resolution Committee.

Bad omens and false dawns for England

Andrew Miller presents the plays of the day as South Africa crushed England at Trent Bridge

Andrew Miller at Trent Bridge11-Jun-2009

Roelof van der Merwe celebrates the catch of the day to dismiss Kevin Pietersen•AFP

Bad omen of the dayRavi Bopara and Luke Wright have very different approaches to top-order biffing. One is all culture, the other agriculture, but between them they’ve managed to provide England with something resembling a platform in the competition so far. Today, however, it all went wrong with disturbing predictability. Bopara was suckered by Dale Steyn’s slower ball and chopped onto his stumps; Wright whooshed with woolly abandon at anything outside off, and eventually feathered his sixth delivery to the keeper. Two wickets down inside two overs. Whoops.Catch of the dayAnd yet, incredibly, salvation seemed to come striding out of the pavilion. There are some days when it’s hard to see how Kevin Pietersen can possibly be stopped. This was shaping up as one of them. He flicked his first ball dismissively through midwicket, then drove his second crisply down the ground, before welcoming Jacques Kallis with two more fours in his first over of the match. By the end of the fifth over Pietersen had scored 19 of England’s 25 runs, with the promise of many, many more. But then, up popped Roelof van der Merwe at mid-on, stretching in mid-air to intercept a scuffed drive off a low full-toss, and England’s momentum was never able to recover.Over of the dayOver of the tournament, for that matter. In the sixth over of the 14th match, and with some 450 overs already delivered since last Friday’s curtain-raiser, Albie Morkel put a seal on England’s Powerplays by sending down the first maiden of the tournament. Having extracted Pietersen with his second delivery, Morkel merely pitched it up and invited the new batsman, Paul Collingwood, to bosh him back over the top. Unsurprisingly, Collingwood declined, and chose instead to get his eye in, as England dribbled to 25 for 3 after six overs – the lowest Powerplay total of any side so far.Bowler of the dayBy rights that honour should have gone to Morkel, but Graeme Smith obviously saw something amiss in his six deliveries, because he was promptly retired to the outfield with the improbable analysis of 1-1-0-1. Instead it was over to Wayne Parnell to destroy England. In one delivery shy of a full quota, he claimed 3 for 14, including two timber-rattlers in consecutive deliveries to end the aspirations of Stuart Broad and James Anderson. In 24 deliveries (including one wide) he conceded a solitary boundary, and that too would have been caught on the rope had Smith had an extra metre in which to operate. Zipped down from a great height onto a full length, and from an unfamiliar left-arm line, it was unplayably effective stuff.Ignominy of the dayAs if being bowled out inside 20 overs wasn’t embarrassing enough, England achieved a raft of lows in their pitiful batting performance – their score of 111 was the lowest first-innings total in the tournament so far (not including Scotland’s seven-over slog against New Zealand last week), and England’s worst effort in 18 T20Is dating back to June 2005. Perhaps the single most damning indictment of their efforts, however, came down at Taunton, where England’s women were set a target of 112 for victory against India … and achieved it with ten wickets and 26 balls to spare.False dawn of the dayIn reply, England opened up with Dimitri Mascarenhas, and – shock horror! – South Africa were briefly becalmed. His first five deliveries were all patted back by Smith, giving rise to the prospect of a second maiden in as many innings. That was scotched when Smith worked the final delivery to square leg for a single, but nevertheless, England appeared to be putting up a fight, especially when Smith went cheaply in Broad’s first over. But then, inexorably, the South African machine, aka Jacques Kallis, ground into motion. And nothing in his path stood a chance.

Noa Lang: West Ham eye new Dimitri Payet

West Ham United have been told exactly how much it’ll take to secure mooted transfer target Noa Lang in January…

What’s the word?

According to Belgian outlet Voetbal Belgie, the Irons will need to pay in the region of €40m (£34m) to land the Club Brugge attacker as they anticipate a bidding war ahead of the upcoming transfer window.

Premier League rivals Arsenal and Leeds United are also said to be keen, along with Serie A giants AC Milan and German outfit Borussia Monchengladbach.

A fee in the region of £34m would be a record in Belgium and the Jupiler Pro League club are in no position to sell as Lang is contracted until 2025.

Shades of Payet

It’s no wonder the Dutch winger has become hot property in recent months as he has continued his remarkable form for both club and country this season.

The 22-year-old, who stands at 5 foot 10, delivered 17 goals and 11 assists as Brugge clinched the Belgian title last term with a whopping 16-point margin, with Lang evidently playing a major role in the attack.

That form has extended into 2021/22, where he has already bagged four goals and provided five assists in 17 appearances, via Transfermarkt, including a ‘Man of the Match’ showing against French giants Paris Saint-Germain – a really encouraging sign to his true potential as he clinched the award over the likes of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.

“Lang is without a doubt the best player in the league, I think. Pure class,” suggested Belgian football pundit Filip Joos explained to Extra Time. “His technique is not normal. Lang is constantly on the move, he glides across the field, he likes to dribble, but he will always play at the right time.”

The young dynamo, valued at £22.5m by Transfermarkt, has also been dubbed a “phenomenon” by journalist Peter Vandenbempt for his achievements in Belgium.

Now capped twice by the Netherlands, Lang’s career trajectory is only going to go up, and given everything mentioned above, he could well become the most exciting and biggest signing since Dimitri Payet at the London Stadium.

Evidently, the 22-year-old gem has the flair and skillset to replicate the Frenchman’s thrilling exploits at the Hammers. Lang likes to cut inside, with dribbling and passing two key attributes of his, as per WhoScored.

That only further suggests he could become the next Payet in east London.

With everything in mind, West Ham’s new head of recruitment Rob Newman must do all he can to land Lang for manager David Moyes.

AND in other news, Moyes may have another Antonio in West Ham’s “hard-working” 17 y/o who “loves to score”…
