Rangers transfer claim on Kent

Paul Robinson has claimed that Glasgow Rangers will now be able to keep Ryan Kent away from the clutches of Leeds United.

The Lowdown: Leeds interest

Leeds United have previously been linked with a move for Kent, although the summer window is now shut.

However, after they announced the signing of Dan James from Manchester United on Transfer Deadline Day, it is not clear whether they would still revisit their interest in the Englishman in January.

The Latest: Robinson on Kent

Speaking to Football Insider, former Whites and Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper now pundit Robinson has claimed that any potential move for Kent to his old team is now dead and buried after the arrival of James to Elland Road:

“I always knew it would be a difficult one for Leeds to pull off.

“Rangers under Gerrard are a different prospect to what they were, they have the potential to compete and fight on all fronts.

“Leeds would probably have been priced out of a move. Now Dan James has come I think that one is dead in the water.

“He hasn’t started the season particularly well. Now with the window shut hopefully that gives him some stability and he can turn that form around.”

The Verdict: Keep

The Ibrox faithful must look to keep hold of their best players for as long as possible, and Kent is certainly one of them.

Described as ‘fantastic’ by former Light Blues right-back Alan Hutton, the winger scored an impressive 13 goals and supplied a further 15 assists in 52 games in total across all competitions across the 2020/21 season (Transfermarkt).

Nonetheless, he still has potential to develop even more at just 24 years of age, and will only get better under the management of Steven Gerrard.

Thus, the Gers need to stand firm with a huge valuation, in case Leeds do end up revisiting their interest despite James’ signing.

Teams yet to train in new stadium

Australia’s preparations for Thursday’s must-win fourth Test have been disrupted due to last-minute touches to the brand new ground in Nagpur

Australia’s preparations for Thursday’s must-win fourth Test have been disrupted due to last-minute touches to the brand new ground in Nagpur. The Vidarbha Cricket Association’s stadium, which has hosted a couple of trial matches, was only approved for Tests on Tuesday morning after an inspection from the match referee Chris Broad and the practice facilities are not ready. The tourists, who trail India after their victory in Mohali, trained at the old ground on Tuesday and will do so again on the eve of the game. Michael Hussey, Australia’s most successful batsman of the tour with 285 runs at 57.00, likes to make sure his preparation is perfect before a match, but was trying not to let the unusual situation bother him.”We’ve had to do it many times before, you fly into locations to play one-day internationals the day before and you have to cope,” he said. “It’s played in the head, so if you do let those things worry you then you will probably be affected, but we’ve got very mentally tough cricketers in the side. So I’m sure we’ll be able to put those things aside and concentrate on what you have to do.”The visitors have so far relied on local information about the pitch, although senior members of the side are expected to inspect the ground in the lead-up to the match. Last time Australia were in Nagpur, when they won in 2004, the surface suited the fast bowlers, but there is little chance of a repeat.”I’ve been told that it’s a beautiful green, grassy square, but there is one strip that’s not got a blade of grass on it,” Hussey said. “That’s just what we have been told from afar, so we don’t know.”Australia have been preparing for a slow, low wicket that should suit the spinners, which increases the chances of offspinner Jason Krejza coming in for Cameron White. Although White is not a full-time legspinner with Victoria he has done an admirable job in capturing five wickets at 60.60 in the opening three matches. However, with the series on the line, Australia may look to a more attacking option and pick Krejza. “Jason has been bowling well in the nets and he’s been working very hard,” Hussey said. “It would be a huge test for him to come in, but what better way to find out if a guy can sink or swim.”Krejza, from Tasmania, has taken 43 wickets at 50.09 in 24 first-class games, but was pushed below White after match figures of 0 for 199 in a lead-up fixture. Australia will also consider rearranging the quick bowlers after they were unable to take more than 14 wickets in the series. The support staff of Peter Siddle, who played in Mohali, and Doug Bollinger should come into contention for the vital contest.

Blitz Colorada

No foreign team will participate in the Duleep Trophy this season. The concept, first applied in the 2003-04 season, has seen England A (twice), Sri Lanka A, Zimbabwe President’s XI and Bangladesh A compete in India’s zonal first-class tournament. With the Australian, New Zealand and South African domestic seasons clashing with that of India’s, it was always going to be difficult for the BCCI to get foreign teams to play this year. However, the board clarified that the unwillingness to come was not due to security issues. “There are no issues at all about security or anything like that,” Ratnakar Shetty, the BCCI’s chief administrative officer, told Cricinfo. “We have not got confirmations from any team, and that is why we decided to go ahead.”In the absence of a sixth team, this season’s Duleep Trophy will be played on a knock-out basis. South Zone and Central Zone, the teams placed at the bottom of their respective groups last season, will play a qualifying match in Bangalore from January 22. The winner will take on defending champions North Zone in the first semi-final, while East Zone clash with West Zone in the second. The final, scheduled to begin on February 5, will be played in Chennai. There was a slight change made to the Ranji Trophy schedule as well. With the Champions League postponed indefinitely, the BCCI has decided to give some more breathing space between the knockout matches. There will be now a four-day gap between the last league match and the quarter-finals (as opposed to three days in the original schedule), and a six-day gap between quarter-finals and semi-finals (two days originally). The venues for the quarter-finals and semi-finals were also finalised: Ahmedabad, Mumbai (Brabourne Stadium), Vadodara and Bangalore will host the quarter-finals, while the semi-finals will be played in Chennai and Nagpur. The venue for the final, which will now start on January 12 as opposed to January 7, is yet to be decided.

Southampton eyeing Steve Cooper

An update has emerged on free-agent manager Steve Cooper, regarding Southampton’s interest in his services.

What’s the talk?

According to Alan Nixon of The Sun  (12.09.21, pg. 64), via The 72, former Swansea head coach Steve Cooper is Southampton’s number one choice to replace Ralph Hasenhuttl.

The report claims that the Saints have identified Cooper should they need to replace the Austrian, whether that be because they decide to relieve him of his duties or because another club comes calling for his services.

Nightmare

Southampton owner Gao Jisheng must avoid a nightmare scenario by forgetting about any move for Cooper. The Saints chief must veto any deal for the ex-England youth head coach as it would be a terrible decision by the club, given how things went for his Swansea team last season.

His Swansea team rarely left fans excited as they went for a pragmatic, defensive, approach to Championship football. They ended the 2020/21 campaign in fourth place, but only scored 56 goals in their 46 league matches – compared to Brentford’s 79 and Norwich’s 75.

This ultimately played a hand in their failure to secure promotion, with his side winning just four of their last 14 matches – including a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Brentford in the play-off final as they failed to lay a glove on the Bees.

So, why would Southampton want to bring in a manager who was unable to produce good football in the second tier and is unproven as a coach at the top level? It could be a disaster situation for the Saints and one they must avoid, although it must be stressed that there is no suggestion Hasenhuttl will be going anywhere any time soon.

Hasenhuttl has averaged 1.31 points per game across 118 Premier League matches in charge of the Saints, compared to Cooper’s 1.61 points-per-game across 105 Championship games.

Given the gulf in quality between the two divisions and with Southampton battling relegation whilst Swansea fought for promotion, these statistics do not suggest Cooper would be an upgrade on the Austrian.

Hopefully, Hasenhuttl will remain at the helm for the foreseeable future and Gao will not need to be in a position where he needs to make a decision.

However, if such an occasion does arise then they could benefit from looking elsewhere instead of going for Cooper.

Predicted Spurs XI v Chelsea - team, injury news

Nuno Santo is dealing with further injury woes as his Tottenham Hotspur side look to bounce back against Chelsea in the Premier League this afternoon.

The north London outfit have endured a tough week, seeing their unbeaten record in the top-flight come to an end at the hands of then-winless Crystal Palace before they had to settle for a point against Rennes in the UEFA Europa Conference League.

Now they face the small matter of the Champions of Europe at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in a bid to get back on track.

But what sort of XI could we see from the Portuguese head coach? Here’s what we are predicting…

Nuno has been without the services of no fewer than six first-team players this week and on Thursday, their mounting problems got worse as both Steven Bergwijn and Lucas Moura picked up knocks – neither could feature here.

Eric Dier is also likely to still be on the treatment table.

However, it’s expected that Heung-min Son will be able to make a much-needed return after picking up an issue during the international break, whilst the South American trio of Giovani Lo Celso, Davinson Sanchez and Cristian Romero are finally available for selection, having returned to the UK on Saturday.

We expect club captain Hugo Lloris to take up his usual spot between the sticks, replacing Pierluigi Gollini from midweek, whilst it could be an entirely different back four, with Japhet Tanganga absent through suspension.

Sergio Reguilon and Emerson should come in for both Ben Davies and Matt Doherty – the 29-year-old struggled against Rennes – on the flanks, whilst the aforementioned central defensive duo of Sanchez and Romero could well be thrown straight in, given the club’s threadbare options in the role.

In midfield, Tanguy Ndombele should keep his place after making an impressive statement on his first start of the season in France and he could be joined by Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Dele Alli in the engine room, meaning there is no place for Oliver Skipp.

Should Son return, then he may well have to be joined by summer signing Bryan Gil, whilst Harry Kane will undoubtedly lead the line.

Predicted Spurs XI vs Chelsea (4-2-3-1): Lloris; Reguilon, Romero, Sanchez, Emerson; Hojbjerg, Ndombele, Alli; Son, Gil, Kane.

Daminda fires Ragama CC to top spot

A round-up of the seventh-round matches of the Premier League Tournament in Sri Lanka

Ragama CC roared back into contention in Premier League Tier A when they pulled off a stunning three-wicket win over Bloomfield at Reid Avenue to regain top position, as the race for the championship hotted up.In a top-of-the-table clash, Ragama were indebted to a magnificent bowling spell by 25-year-old right-arm seamer Dinesh Daminda and seasoned campaigner Indika de Saram for steering them to an important victory.Daminda returned the season’s best figures for an innings and for a match, to sink the table toppers who had held the upperhand throughout the match until the final day. He picked up 8 for 51 in the first innings, and then added a further three in the second innings to end with match figures of 11 for 77 – bettering the 11 for 123 by Saracens SC left-arm spinner Malinda Pushpakumara against Lankan Cricket Club last month.Bloomfield struggled to 218 despite having Sri Lankan batsmen Chamara Silva and Saman Jayantha in their ranks. However, despite Daminda’s outstanding bowling, Ragama’s batting failed as they managed only 142 in reply. But they fought back to dismiss Bloomfield for 159 in the second innings and leave themselves with a target of 235.Going into the third day, Ragama were rather shakily placed at 164 for 6, requiring a further 71 for victory with only four wickets intact. The final day was poised for a tense finish, but Ragama had an ace up their sleeve in the in-form de Saram, who resumed from his overnight innings of 75. The 35-year-old Saram forged match-winning partnerships of 70 for the seventh wicket with Kaushalya Weeraratne (42) and an unbroken 53 for the eighth with Malinga Bandara (31 not out) to see Ragama through.de Saram scored 102 off 118 balls – his third century in four innings – which included 11 fours and a six, making him the leading run-getter for the season with over 500 runs.Defending champs Sinhalese SC moved to their highest position for the season with their first win – a crushing innings and 32-run victory over newcomers Army SC who are struggling at the bottom of Tier A with no wins in five matches.SSC’s win was fashioned by captain Tharanga Paranavithana who scored his second hundred of the season to enable them to get to 355, a total which proved to be a match-winning one as the soldiers were bundled out for 193 and 130, succumbing to SSC’s bowling line-up comprising Shalika Karunanayake, Sachitra Senanayake and Thilina Kandamby.Sri Lanka’s Under-19 World Cup captain Ashan Priyanjan distinguished himself in the domestic club circuit with a splendid batting double to steer Tamil Union to a six-wicket win over Colombo Colts at Havelock Park. Priyanjan made a compact 88 to guide Tamil Union to a narrow first-innings lead of 12 and followed it up with another impressive knock of 58 not out during Tamil Union’s 192-run chase. In a high-scoring game at Braybrooke Place, Moors SC drew with Badureliya CC despite a 223-run stand by Nadeera Nawala (142) and Wesley Fernando (68).Three centuries were scored at Maitland Crescent where the match between Colombo CC and Chilaw Marians ended in a stalemate. For CCC, Charith Sylvester scored 111 in the first innings and Bathiya Perera slammed a hundred off 82 deliveries in the second. Janaka Gunaratne ensured that Marians, who conceded a first-innings lead of 127, did not lose the match as he stroked an unbeaten 122, after Marians had lost half the side for 101 while chasing 327.In Tier B, Seeduwa Raddoluwa Cricket Club were the only club to emerge victorious in a high-scoring weekend of matches, defeating Sebastianites by two wickets to keep their title ambitions on course. They lie second behind Saracens SC who were held to a draw by Air Force but managed vital first-innings points. Seeduwa’s match-winners were offspinner Umesh Karunaratne, who picked up nine wickets in the match, and batsman Buddhi Samarawickrema who top scored with 113.Two centuries from Heshan Tillekaratne and Raju Gayashan could not help Lankan Cricket Club to a win against Singha Sports Club at the Premadasa.Police Sports Club were lucky to escape with a draw after Burgher Recreation Club had held the upper hand for most of the clash at the Police Park Ground. While captain Gihan Perera scored a composed 122 in the first innings, it was the bowlers, Romesh Eranga and Charith Keerthisinghe who nearly pulled it off for Burgher. An unbeaten 98 from Milinda Sepala ensured Moratuwa Sports Club avoided defeat against Panadura Sports Club at the De Zoysa Stadium. His fighting knock which came off 143 balls, ensured the few points for the hosts after Amila Perera’s spell of 5 for 45 in the first innings had swung the momentum towards Panadura.Player of the Week – Dinesh Daminda
Five years ago Dinesh Daminda would have given up hopes of continuing his career as a cricketer when he suffered a nasty knee injury at practice and was confined to crutches. The incident occurred at the Bloomfield nets when Daminda, bowling with a pair of rubber soled boots, slipped and fell twisting his left knee. He had screws inserted in his knee to keep it intact and through a six-month period of rehabilitation recovered remarkably well to be ranked among the ten best fast bowlers in the country clocking speeds at around 135 kph. However last season, he had a recurrence of the injury which again pushed back his ambitions of playing for his country. Thankfully he recovered and went to England to play in the Lancashire league but had to fight for his place in the Ragama team as they had already found suitable replacements. Daminda missed the first few matches at the start of the season but in his third game produced a superb piece of seam bowling. His career and season’s best figures helped Ragama regain the top spot in Premier Tier A. “That nasty knee injury was a definite setback to what would have been a promising career for Daminda,” said Ragama CC president Roshan Abeysinghe. “If not for the injury he would have been among the top flight fast bowlers in the national squad.”Points tableTier A
