Drakes faces a dilemma

Vasbert Drakes is facing his second career decision within a week

Tony Cozier12-Sep-2002Vasbert Drakes is facing his second career decision within a week. After deciding to put his contract with South African province Border on hold and accepting selection to the West Indies team to the ICC Champions Trophy here as a replacement for the injured Cameron Cuffy, the 33-year-old all-rounder now has to resolve whether to wait for another call-up for the seven One-Day Internationals on the tour of India in November.Drakes, whose commitment to Border for the last five years made him ineligible for the West Indies, was picked after the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) changed its rule so that qualification was dependent only on availability for the preceding regional tournament. His performances in the Red Stripe Bowl gained him Cuffy’s position for the Champions’ Trophy but he was omitted from the 16 announced Monday for the three Tests in India that follow the Champions’ Trophy (October 9 to November 3).His experience and ability as fast bowler and capable lower-order batsman make him a near-certainty for the limited-overs team, especially for the World Cup in South Africa next February 9 to March 23.If chosen, his selection would further restrict his appearances for Border, who might be inclined to seek a replacement.Along with all the other players here, Drakes learned of the composition of the team for the India Tests from a phone call for home.Manager Ricky Skerritt said yesterday it was "an unsatisfactory way" of communicating."It is nothing new but, by now, we should have a procedure in place by which the players don’t have to find out where they stand from a call or an e-mail from friends or through the Press or the radio," he said."They should be told first by the board and, when on tour, through the manager," he added. It is a sentiment that has been repeatedly echoed over the years but still not heeded.

Pundit says new deal may persuade Jack Grealish to stay at Villa

Jack Grealish could be persuaded to snub a move to Manchester City and remain at boyhood club Aston Villa, according to former City star Paul Stewart.

Grealish is among the Premier League champions’ top transfer targets, with Pep Guardiola looking to land the creative midfielder and Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane in a double deal worth £225million.

However, Villa are in a strong negotiating position as their captain still has four years remaining on his £120,000-per-week deal.

Villa boss Dean Smith is desperate to see Grealish remain at the club and reports suggest his current employers are readying a club-record £200,ooo-per-week contract offer in a bid to persuade him to stay.

Grealish, who was England’s poster boy during their run to a first ever European Championships final earlier this month, came through the ranks at Villa Park and has made 213 appearances for the club he supported as a boy.

Stewart, who featured for Manchester City during his playing career, would not be surprised to see Grealish remain at Villa beyond the closure of the transfer window next month.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, he said: “Jack is Aston Villa through and through. If they offer him the money, that might just give them the edge to make him want to stay for another season.”

Journalist shares Alfredo Morelos update

There is still a lot of doubt surrounding Alfredo Morelos’ future at Rangers as we enter the final month of the transfer window, with Porto reportedly keen on adding to the Colombian to their squad, and it would be a huge blow for Steven Gerrard if he were to leave Ibrox.

What’s the word?

The Portuguese side have regularly been linked with the 25-year-old forward throughout the transfer window and following the signing of Fashion Sakala, it seems as if Gerrard already has his replacement ready should he depart.

In a recent interview with The Transfer Tavern, Sky Sports journalist Michael Bridge claimed that:

“I think Porto are the club that still want him.”

Rumours have died down in recent weeks, perhaps due to Morelos’ involvement in the Copa America earlier in the summer but from what Bridges suggests, Rangers should be expecting another bid from Porto for their star striker in the near future.

Would it be a blow if Morelos were to leave Rangers?

Since joining Rangers in 2017, Morelos has gone on to make 182 appearances for the Gers, contributing an impressive 94 goals and 43 assists in that time, whilst he also played a key part in their title success last season.

The Colombia international also became Rangers’ top scorer in European competitions when he broke Ally McCoist’s record last year, so Gerrard will surely want to keep him around as they prepare to feature in the Champions League, with their qualifying campaign beginning against Malmo tomorrow evening.

Morelos has regularly been dubbed “outstanding” by Gerrard during his tenure at Ibrox and he is much more than just a goalscorer in this Rangers side, so it would be a huge blow to lose a player of his quality.

However, he has less than two years left on his contract at Ibrox and is currently valued at £10.8m by Transfermarkt, so this summer might be the best time to sell him from a financial perspective, although Rangers are pretty much guaranteed to make a significant profit on the £1m they reportedly paid to sign him from HJK Helsinki.

[freshpress-quiz id=“593776”]

Rangers’ attack would look considerably weaker if he were to leave, so Gers fans will surely be worried that Porto reportedly retain an interest in signing Morelos this summer.

If they do come in for him, given his contract situation, Rangers may decide that the time is right, from a business perspective, to cash in.

From a financial viewpoint, that makes sense, but it would still be a blow for Gerrard to lose the club’s best-ever European goalscorer in a season where he wants his side to compete in Europe’s elite club competition.

And, in other news… Wilson should seal Rangers swoop for “exceptionally good” beast

Vital two months ahead for New Zealand World Cup hopes

Smarting from their failure to get past pool play in defending their ICC Champions Trophy prize in Sri Lanka, New Zealand’s leading players have been told the next two months could be the most important two months in their careers

Lynn McConnell25-Sep-2002Smarting from their failure to get past pool play in defending their ICC Champions Trophy prize in Sri Lanka, New Zealand’s leading players have been told the next two months could be the most important two months in their careers.TelstraClear Black Caps coach Denis Aberhart said on the team’s arrival home today that the unbroken period from now until the start of the Indian tour of New Zealand was vital to team hopes for the World Cup in February/March.”Of course we are disappointed with our results. We prepared and planned well for the tournament but Australia played very well and were on top at the start of their batting and bowling and they never let us in with a chance.”We were short of our own game.”Against Bangladesh the side had done what it had to do. However, its problems with its batting approach had been seen even against such lowly-rated opposition.”But it is better to find these things out now rather than at the World Cup,” he said. The New Zealand players will be on individual training programmes aimed at sharpening their skills, their physical fitness and techniques.”It is a pretty important two months, for some of them the most important two months of their careers. They will have to work on their game and do all the things they know they have to do to be ready by the time the Indians arrive,” he said.No pre-season team camps are planned at this stage as most players will be working with their respective first-class associations. All teams are taking part in pre-season camps at New Zealand Cricket’s High Performance Centre at Lincoln University starting in the first week of October.Aberhart said there were still concerns over the application in batting, at the top of the order and through the middle stages of the innings.”Batting-wise, we didn’t apply ourselves,” he said. That stemmed from the poor starts and which put the pressure on the remaining batsmen, a situation exacerbated through the absence of Craig McMillan and Chris Cairns.Despite the lack of success enjoyed by the opening pair of Nathan Astle, and skipper Stephen Fleming, Aberhart said the side was committed to having them open the innings.Mathew Sinclair had shown enough with his batting to warrant more consideration in the one-day side while he was very happy with Lou Vincent’s wicket-keeping, although not so pleased with his batting. The short-orders for the team in their World Cup preparation will be to work on batting techniques individually, developing the ability to construct an innings once individuals have got a start and more accuracy from the bowlers. These were predicated by the always obvious need to do the basics well.”The right players are there if you add McMillan and Cairns,” Aberhart said, it was just a case of ensuring they were all at peak readiness for the Indians and the World Cup.

MCC to tour Germany

An MCC side is heading to Germany for a four-match tour which includes a match against the national XI at the Olympic Park CC

Cricinfo staff12-Jun-2008An MCC side is heading to Germany for a four-match tour which includes a match against the national XI at the Olympic Park CC. Other games, at the same venue, are against Germany A, Germany Under-19s and a Berlin Select XI between June 16 and 19.Germany are one of 30 European member countries of the ICC and have recently returned from the 12-team ICC World Cricket League Division 5 in Jersey – a step on the road to qualifying for the World Cup. Their team features Abul Bhatti, the highest run-maker in German international cricket and Eshan Latif, a young left-arm bowler who won two Man of the Match Awards for his recent bowling performances in Jersey. MCC’s team, managed by ex-Ireland International Ross McCollum, will also be on hand to coach some of Berlin’s junior players and introduce one of the city’s schools to cricket.John Stephenson, head of cricket at MCC, said: “MCC is committed to developing cricket all over the world. In 2008 we have already toured in countries as far afield as Uganda and Argentina and will be making another visit to Europe later in the summer when we go to Denmark. We hope that providing both coaching and good opposition for the German teams we will both help with their preparation for Division 2 of the European Championship in July and encourage more youngsters to take up the game.”In its 20-year existence the German Cricket Board (DCB) has established more than 50 senior teams in five regions – Bavaria, Hessen, North Rhine Westphalia, Hamburg and Berlin – as well as women’s and youths’ sides. The ‘Cricket to German Schools Project’ won an ICC-Europe Development Award in 2008 for bringing the game to youngsters and the DCB’s women’s cricket initiative also won a 2008 ICC Global Award. This year sees the start of a national Twenty20 Championship.Bringing the game to more young players and developing the game nationwide is a top priority for MCC and the ICC. MCC will leave a grant of $2500 (€1594) and the ICC will donate $1250 (€797) to develop facilities and coaching programmes in the country.Brian Fell, president of the DCB, said: “The visit of a touring side representing the most famous cricket club in the world can help German cricket both by increasing interest in the existing cricket community – the chance to play against the MCC is seen as a great honour – and also by publicising cricket to a wider audience through the involvement of local government and sports authorities and the media. The matches against the German ‘A’ and U19 teams will be especially good for our programme.”Richard Holdsworth, the European Development Manager at ICC said: “MCC’s support for the Associate and Affiliate country development programmes is extremely important and provides quality opposition for countries to test themselves. Their coaches’ support for community coaching programmes taking place in those countries and their experienced umpires’ expertise mean MCC tours are very valuable.”

7,5
Jadson
Grande partida do meia corintiano.

Ajudou a controlar o jogo no meio.

6,5
Romero

Terminou compondo a lateral esquerda.

5,5
Thiago Mendes

7,0
Pratto
Quando a bola chegou redonda, ele levou perigo. Um chute perigoso no início e um gol no fim. Saiu da área, lutou, incomodou a zaga. Foi bem.

5,5
Chavez

Aston Villa: Fans react to Evans’ claim on Ings

Aston Villa paid Southampton £30m for striker Danny Ings, according to reliable reporter Gregg Evans.

And a number of Villa supporters have been sharing their negative thoughts at the figure on social media.

The 29-year-old was announced as a Villa player on Wednesday evening out of nowhere, penning a three-year deal at Villa Park.

Both Sky Sports and BBC believed a deal cost in the region of £25m, however, Evans, who writes for The Athletic, claimed a move cost Villa £30m.

Ings became Villa’s fourth summer signing after moves for Emiliano Buendia, Ashley Young and Leon Bailey and bolsters Dean Smith’s ranks going forward with Jack Grealish now a Manchester City player.

Villa fans react

Well-known Villa page @villareport shared Evans’ claim on Ings on Twitter on Wednesday evening.

This is what these Villa supporters had to say in reply to the post, with one describing a fee as ’embarrassing’ with a number of fans not exactly thrilled at the fee.
