Johnson could be Leeds long-term Pablo heir

Leeds United have been tipped to sign Brennan Johnson from Nottingham Forest and if he joins, he could be the long-term heir to Pablo Hernandez in Marcelo Bielsa’s side at Elland Road.

The Athletic reported earlier this year that Leeds, along with Leicester City and Brentford, were looking at the Nottingham Forest man after his impressive performances on loan with Lincoln City in League One, with a later report claiming that he would cost around £10m this summer.

Former Sunderland striker Kevin Phillips has recently tipped Leeds to make a move for him this summer when speaking to Football Insider, saying:

“He impressed me when he played in the playoff games against Sunderland.

“Especially in that first game. He looked very direct and got the goal so he’s not afraid to get forward.

“He travels well with the ball and he’s only young. From a Leeds point of view, can you sign him then loan him out?

“He’s definitely got a lot of talent. If he goes to Leeds he won’t be in the first-team plans, I’m sure of it.

“Bielsa can get the best out of players like that, watch this space with that one.”

Last season saw the 20-year-old Johnson play a key role for Lincoln City in League One, as Michael Appleton’s side fell one step short of promotion to the Championship after losing in the playoff final against Blackpool.

He would make 43 appearances in the third tier, contributing an impressive 11 goals and five assists, which helped him average an impressive 6.90 rating from WhoScored for his performances.

WhoScored suggests that Johnson’s main strengths lie in his finishing and dribbling ability, whilst also claiming that he loves to cut inside and offers a counter-attacking threat, which immediately marks him out as someone who could fill the boots of Hernandez at Leeds United in the future.

The experienced Spaniard established himself as a fans favourite during his time at Elland Road, making 175 appearances, in which he contributed an impressive 36 goals and 41 assists, before departing on a free transfer this summer.

If Johnson were signed by Victor Orta this summer, then he would perhaps be sent out on loan, but given time, there seems no reason why he couldn’t become a regular in Bielsa’s side and replace the threat that was offered by Hernandez at Elland Road over the last few seasons.

And, in other news… Bye-bye Raphinha: Orta should seal Leeds summer swoop for “very talented” wonderkid

Expert on why Perraud arrival should worry Southampton fans

A French football expert fears Southampton’s first signing of the summer may struggle to adjust to the pace of the Premier League after a dip in form at the end of last season.

Romain Perraud, who has been monitored by Get French Football News features writer Adam White, has joined Saints after penning a four-year contract.

Perraud made 37 appearances for Stade Brest last season and also contributed three goals and seven assists as he added another attacking dimension to the French side.

The former France under-21 international full-back was named in France Football’s Ligue One team of the season and helped Brest to stave off relegation from the top flight by just one point.

However, Brest’s fall towards the dreaded drop coincided with Perraud’s loss of form in the second half of the season.

White feels the 23-year-old needs to improve his consistency levels if he is to make a name for himself in the Premier League.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, he said: “The only worry for Southampton fans is he was pretty average in the second half of the season as Brest dropped towards the relegation zone.

“I really like him as a player but the end to the season is a little bit of a worry.”

India outpace England in spectacular run chase

India have beaten England by six wickets with seven balls to spare in the second match of the NatWest triangular series at Lord’s

Stephen Lamb29-Jun-2002India have beaten England by six wickets with seven balls to spare in the second match of the NatWest triangular series at Lord’s. A fifth-wicket partnership of 131 between Rahul Dravid and Man-of-the-Match Yuvraj Singh held the key to India’s win at the end of an immensely entertaining day. Bat held sway over ball almost throughout, with Virender Sehwag and Marcus Trescothick also playing starring roles. After England had posted 271, India began their reply in fine style, with Hoggard, shorn of rhythm, taken by Sehwag and Ganguly for 19 off his first two overs. Although Kirtley was more economical at the outset, he couldn’t contain Sehwag either, as the flamboyant Indian opener followed a mid-wicket four with two backward of point. India’s fifty came up off as many balls. more quickly than England’s, and Hoggard was taken off after conceding 32 runs in his first four overs.Ganguly had a life on 16, when Thorpe couldn’t quite hold on to a fierce drive at short extra cover, but there was no stopping Sehwag as Flintoff was dismissed with awesome ease through mid-wicket. With India’s grip on the game tightening by the over, Kirtley was dispatched through backward point by Sehwag and long-off, fiercely, by Ganguly. Sehwag completed a magnificent 50 by clattering Flintoff through the covers. When Giles replaced Kirtley at the nursery end, his first ball was dispatched magnificently by Sehwag into the Compton stand for six. Four more off Flintoff raised India’s hundred from just 88 balls.Irani had Sehwag missed on 70 in his first over, a sharp, low but catchable chance to the diving Collingwood at backward point. Fortunately for Collingwood it didn’t matter; in the next over Sehwag hit Giles high to deep mid-wicket, where Trescothick did marvellously well to take a running catch close to the rope. Sehwag’s 71 had come off just 65 balls, with a six and nine fours, and he and Ganguly had put India on course for victory.Mongia was bowled for just one, playing crookedly at Giles, bringing in Sachin Tendulkar to the kind of ovation he is used to at home. But the little master was unusually subdued, making just one from nine balls before Irani trapped him lbw hitting across the line. India had lost three wickets for nine runs in 31 balls. England’s hopes were raised further when Kirtley took a truly breathtaking catch to dismiss the Indian captain. Ganguly had come down the wicket to hit Giles wide of mid-on, from where Kirtley ran round to take a thrilling, sprawling catch in the fingertips of his left hand. If a better catch has been taken in the deep in any form of cricket, I’m not sure that I’ve seen it.Dravid was joined by Yuvraj Singh, who traced Irani delightfully through the covers to reassert India’s challenge. Dravid was missed on 24 by Stewart off the returning Hoggard – a low, diving effort which Stewart couldn’t quite hold in his right hand. Yuvraj then brought up the 200 with a drive so fierce that hoggard was wise to take evasive action. Despite persevering bowling from England, Yuvraj and Dravid guided India inexorably towards their target. After Yuvraj completed an excellent 50 off 54 balls, Dravid reached the landmark with a pulled boundary off Flintoff. With the rate mounting Dravid cut loose with a stunning array of strokes to keep India in touch, and when he clouted Hoggard through extra cover in the penultimate over, the writing was on the wall for England. The last ball of the over (a no-ball) was hit to long-off for the single India needed to take the match. The way England batted in the first half of their innings, they would have been disappointed not to set India a target in excess of 300. In the first over, bowled by Zaheer Khan, Trescothick took two behind square leg and four down the hill to the extra cover boundary. He then hit Agarkar’s first two balls imperiously for off-side boundaries, before pushing Khan backward of cover point with the same result. After the fifty came up in the tenth over Knight, hesitant at the outset, cast off the shackles, lacing Agarkar first through extra cover and then straight for boundaries. With England relishing the field restrictions to the tune of more than six an over, a double change was inevitable. It came in the form of Harbhajan at the pavilion end, whom Knight immediately swept to the rope backward of square leg. Kumble replaced Agarkar at the nursery end, and this time Trescothick cashed in with four through extra cover. It took a run-out to part the two openers, when Trescothick played Kumble out to Tendulkar at deep mid-wicket. Knight called for a doubful second run and was narrowly beaten by a fine throw to the bowler’s end. England were 86 for one, with Knight gone for 31. After the helmetless Hussain had flirted with disaster with an airborne chip to extra cover off Kumble, the rampant Trescothick went through to an excellent 50 off 48 balls. A swept boundary followed off Harbhajan, bisecting the two fielders on the mid-wicket boundary. Another single brought up England’s hundred off 103 balls in the 17th.The introduction of Yuvraj prompted the first six of the day, swung gleefully into the mound stand by Trescothick. But it was the last hurrah for the Somerset left-hander, who got a thin edge to Dravid as he tried to steer Ganguly to third man. Trescothick had made 86 off just 78 balls with nine fours as well as the six.The in-form Flintoff, promoted to number four, immediately swung his former Lancashire team-mate through mid-wicket. When Harbhajan returned, a reverse sweep to the rope gave Hussain four more, and when Harbhajan over-compensated a wide went for four more to fine leg. Impishly, Hussain reverse-swept to the rope again and another over had gone for 15 runs. As Ganguly switched ends Flintoff smote him successively to the rope at mid-wicket and deep extra cover. With England still scoring at close to a run a ball, Flintoff’s innings ended with the return of Yuvraj Singh driving to short extra for Mongia to take a smart catch.Hussain and Thorpe exchanged regular singles, one of which completed the captain’s 50. After a perfectly-placed chip through mid-wicket, Thorpe was caught by Sehwag at backward point off Yuvraj. As the tempo slowed, Hussain charged down the wicket to play a dreadful swish at Yuvraj and was stumped by the proverbial yard. With the initiative slipping away from England, Stewart grasped the nettle by hitting Yuvraj back over his head for four. When Zaheer returned Stewart swatted him to the Grand Stand boundary before bring up the 250 with a single to mid-off. Irani sacrificed his wicket in the quest for quick runs, but Collingwood briefly made his presence felt at the eleventh hour, whipping Zaheer delightfully through mid-wicket.Agarkar and Zaheer both bowled well at the death, with a succession of yorkers, and Collingwood perished caught behind off a skier. In the end England had fewer runs than they had hoped for at the half-way stage of their innings, and not quite enough to win a scintillating match.

Another injury setback for the Cidermen as Francis breaks a finger

Richard Walsh04-Jul-2002A lot will be expected of the Somerset batsmen when they resume their innings in the morningThe first target for the not out batsmen Mike Burns (51) and Keith Parsons (13)will be 458 to avoid the follow on, but knowing that they will be without the services of paceman Simon Francis for the Surrey second innings they will be hoping for a lot more.Early on this morning Mark Ramprakash brought up his double century, before he was out to Steffan Jones after giving an impressive demonstration of his batting talents, that had spread over four sessions of play.Ricky Clarke and Ed Giddins then took the Surrey score onto 608 for 6 until just before lunchtime, skipper Adam Hollioake called it a day to post a massive challenge to the Somerset batsmen. At the declaration Clarke had made an unbeaten 153, his maiden century in the championship.During the morning Somerset had lost the services of paceman Simon Francis, who damaged a finger fielding a shot from Ricky Clarke off his own bowling. Anx-ray of his injury has revealed that he has broken his finger and will be out for three weeks. In reply the Cidermen’s openers Piran Holloway and Matthew Wood made a superb start and put on 202 for the first wicket, with the Devon youngster scoring the second championship century of his career, before being bowled by Jimmy Ormond for 106.The opening partnership was a new Somerset record against Surrey at the County Ground beating the previous record of 184 that was set in 1925 by Jack MacBryan (109) and Tom Young (71).The diminutive Cornishman Holloway also demonstrated an array of attacking shots to announce his arrival back on the first class scene this season, before he too became another victim of Ormond’s when with the score on 271 he was caught at slip by Hollioake for 77.By the close of play the ever dependable pairing of Mike Burns and Keith Parsons had taken Somerset onto 304 for 3 wickets, but there is still a lot of hard work needed from them on Friday. After the game Kevin Shine told me: “I’m very pleased with the way that things went for us today. We made a great fightback. Going in on a good wicket chasing a big total I’ve seen it all go downhill, but we batted very professionally.”He continued: “Piran Holloway and Matthew Wood set us off really well, and Woody’s century was excellent. He seems to bat better everytime that he goes to the wicket.”Regarding Simon Francis he told me: “He is incredibly unlucky to get an injury. Even this morning he was still beating Mark Ramprakash and was showing his real potential. He is the real thing, and then this happens, we don’t need that kind of luck.”

Spurs should replace Sanchez with Demiral

Nuno Espirito Santo could make measures to solve one of Tottenham Hotspur’s biggest problems amid emerging reports…

What’s the word?

According to Tuttosport, Spurs are among the clubs interested in Juventus centre-back Merih Demiral, and the Serie A outfit are prepared to sell him if their €35m (£30m) asking price is met.

The north Londoners face competition from Premier League rivals Everton, as well as Italian side Atalanta.

Bye-bye Sanchez

Nuno has a mighty task on his hands if he’s to clean up the mess at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. He has inherited a squad which has underachieved in the past 18 months, resulting in their worst-placed league finish in over ten years.

Many of their issues boil down to their problems in defence. A combination of an abundance of individual errors and a lack of leadership resulted in Spurs conceding more goals than any of the other traditional ‘big six’ in 2020/21.

Some could argue that Jan Vertonghen was never replaced last summer, whilst the performances of regulars like Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez were way below par – especially the latter, who could be forced out before next month’s transfer deadline.

The Athletic believes that the club will listen to offers for the £42m flop, and his agent Nestor Villarreal remained coy on his client’s future in north London when speaking to Colombian outlet Gol Caracol.

Throughout the 2020/21 campaign, Sanchez was described as a “real liability” and was dubbed as part of the worst central defensive partnerships in the league, so clearly that’s the big issue that Nuno needs to remedy.

He could do just that by signing Demiral, who has been touted for some big things. The 23-year-old, who is currently valued at £26m, is said to be in similar stature to former Premier League beast Nemanja Vidic, a player on whom he has modelled his game.

“The Turkish international towers above most players, is physical, strong in the air and surprisingly technical with the ball for such a big man. He is a natural leader and cool under pressure,” claimed Turkish-football.com founder Emre Sarigul.

Demiral is the perfect combination of brute force, intelligence and deft touch, having averaged 2.8 aerial duels won, 4.2 clearances, 1.6 interceptions, 1.4 tackles and an 87.4% passing accuracy per game throughout his career to date, as per WhoScored.

Also lauded as an “absolute beast”, the 6 foot 3 titan would surely be a considerable upgrade on Sanchez and would arguably be one foot in the right direction in fixing Spurs’ long-standing defensive issues.

For £30m, it has to be done.

AND in other news, Spurs could swoop for £16m-rated “leader” who bullied Kane at Euro 2020…
