Resuming at 99 for two, Orissa enjoyed a fruitful day. First, RR Parida (75) and Sanjay Satpathy (41) added 75 runs for the third wicket off 16 overs. Veteran left arm spinner Sunil Subramaniam broke the stand by having Satpathy leg before. Satpathy faced just 39 ballsand hit six fours. Parida fell a little later. He faced 151 balls and hit six fours and a six. Mullick (5) did not last long and suddenly Orissa had slumped to 198 for five.However, Sanjay Roul (45) and P Jaychandra (13) initiated a recovery process by adding 37 runs for the sixth wicket off 12 overs. Roul, who made a valuable 45, was seventh out at 264. He faced 66 balls and hit five boundaries. The rest of the day belonged to Gautam Gopal who cracked an unbeaten 53 off just 36 balls with nine fours and two sixes. He dominated an unbroken eighth wicket partnership of 38 runs off 8.1 overs with Debasish Mohanty (7) to push the Orissa score past the 300 mark by close. Ganesh Kumar was the pick of the bowlers with three for 64 off 17 overs while Subramaniam picked up two for 90 off 18 overs.

Former Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez is ‘willing to talk’ to Everton about the vacant managerial post at Goodison Park, according to Patrick Boyland and Greg O’Keeffe.

The lowdown

Everton are looking to secure a new manager ahead of the summer transfer window after Carlo Ancelotti left to return to Real Madrid last week.

Benitez has been out of work since January after leaving Chinese Super League club Dalian Yifang. The Spaniard led Liverpool to the Champions League and UEFA Super Cup in 2005, as well as the FA Cup a year later.

Benitez is a decorated coach, having also won a pair of La Liga titles at Valencia early in the millennium and a Europa League crown with Chelsea, with the 61-year-old having 12 trophies to his name during his career in management.

The latest

It seems as if Benitez would entertain interest from Everton despite his association with Liverpool. However, Boyland and O’Keeffe noted for The Athletic that those links with the Anfield club continue to ‘make him a tough sell’ to some members of the board.

Meanwhile, there is said to be a willingness to bring back current Belgium boss Roberto Martinez in some quarters. Another former manager in David Moyes has also been considered, but there are ‘question marks’ over whether he would consider leaving Europa League-bound West Ham United and returning to Everton.

The Scot was ‘swiftly un-offered’ the job in 2019 when the club were presented with the opportunity to hire Ancelotti instead.

The verdict

Benitez is one of the most successful managers of his generation but you’d never want a manager to take a job under an immediate cloud, as Everton fans would probably be very quick to turn on him during a tricky run of form given his previous alliances with Liverpool.

It’s a good sign that a figure of his calibre is open to negotiations, but the Toffees hierarchy should look for a separate project given how fragile this one could be.

In the presence of Matthew Hayden (119), who appliedhimself with determination, Gilchrist (122) cut loose. Incidentally,Gilchrist’s 100 off 84 balls is the fastest century by any batsman ina Test against India, the previous best being 85 balls by Clive Lloydof West Indies at Bangalore in 1974-75. Pundit Kevin Campbell believes Newcastle United will win the race to sign Celtic defender Kristoffer Ajer this summer, as reported by Football Insider.

The Lowdown: Newcastle’s interest; Ajer’s comments

The Magpies were first linked with a move for Ajer back in March, where they were thought to be preparing an £8m bid.

Reports at the end of May went as far as saying a transfer was close in a fee worth £6m, but as we know, there has been no confirmation as of yet from either club.

Ajer, who can play as a centre-back or as a right-back, confirmed last weekend he wanted to leave Parkhead this summer. He has just 12 months on his Hoops deal and would like to join a top-five league.

The Latest: Campbell reacts

Campbell, who has appeared as a pundit on Sky Sports, was talking to Football Insider about Ajer and a possible move to Newcastle, to which he said:

“That is going to happen.

“The lure of Newcastle, who are a big club, is going to be a bit too strong I think. Ajer, like the majority of players out there, wants to play in the Premier League. It is a big draw.

“I am pretty sure that one is going to happen. From what I hear from people in the game, he has made his intentions quite clear.”

The Verdict: Should be of interest to Postecoglou

Campbell is clearly confident Ajer is heading to St James’ Park, and that should be of interest to new Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou.

The 55-year-old was announced as Neil Lennon’s successor on Thursday morning, and if Ajer departs for Newcastle, that will leave him with just Stephen Welsh as the only fit senior centre-back due to Christopher Jullien’s injury.

Postecoglou, who will assess targets during his 10-day isolation period, may well want to act fast in the transfer window when it comes to signings, and he may well need more than one central defender if Campbell’s claims come to fruition.

Going into the European qualifiers with just one fit senior centre-back would potentially be a disaster, so this is one deal Postecoglou will surely be keeping a very close eye on.
