Mishra's five helps India dominate

Handed a Test debut ahead of Munaf Patel after Anil Kumble was ruled out by injury, Mishra picked up five wickets and spun Australia out for 268, handing India a 201-run lead

Amit Mishra had to wait six years for his second call-up to the Test squad but the timing was nothing short of perfect and his performance the definition of heart. Handed a Test debut after Anil Kumble was ruled out by injury, Mishra, the 25-year-old legspinner from Haryana, picked up five wickets and spun Australia out for 268 to give India a 201-run lead. Shane Watson batted superbly for a career-best 78, the highest score in a disappointing Australian innings, but couldn’t take his team past the follow-on mark. India chose not to enforce it, however, and their openers rattled off 100 in 23 overs, extending the lead to 301.If India go on to win this Test their think-tank should pat itself on the back because the decision to play Mishra, plucked out of relative obscurity, paid off spectacularly. India bowled with determination and resolve through the day but Mishra was the pick of the lot. Short and stocky with an easy action, he bowled the ball slow and that earned him the massive wickets of Simon Katich and Michael Clarke yesterday. The remaining three came either side of a 73-run partnership for the eighth wicket between Watson and Brett Lee, and proved crucial in strengthening India’s position.India gained the early advantage by removing Michael Hussey in the first session, but Watson and Brad Haddin looked to be settling in when the persevering Harbhajan Singh struck. He bowled Haddin with an offbreak that went through the bat-pad gap before Mishra doubled India’s joy by sneaking a googly through Cameron White.Smart statsAmit Mishra became the sixth Indian bowler to take five wickets in his debut Test, the first since Narendra Hirwani. This is the third time in 96 Tests since 2000 that Australia have conceded a first-innings lead in excess of 200. India didn’t enforce the follow in Sydney in 2004; the Test was drawn. The highest fourth-innings target successfully chased in India is 276, by West Indies in Delhi in 1987. The most number of overs a visiting team has played out in the fourth innings in India is 135, by New Zealand in Mohali in 1999.Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir were involved in a century stand for the first time in India’s second innings in Tests. They have four century partnerships in all.India were made to toil for over two hours during the one period Australia can claim to have dominated. Watson played a positive innings and remained in control throughout, timing the ball superbly through the off side. He leant into his drives and caressed the ball- six of his fours came on the off side.Watson batted with composure despite the ball turning enough to beat the bat or strike the pad. He walked in after lunch on 39 with the responsibility of lifting Australia from 174 for 7, and was fortunate to be given not out by Rudi Koerzten, when the first ball of Ishant’s post-lunch spell swung in and struck him plumb in front. With a couple to long-leg in the same over, Watson equaled his highest Test score of 41, and bettered it with a pull for six when Mishra dropped short. His fifty came with a cut behind point for four and the Australian dressing room voiced its appreciation.Watson and Lee batted out the first hour after lunch, scoring 47 runs, and were nine minutes away from tea when Harbhajan was rewarded for tight bowling when Lee pushed hard and edged low to Rahul Dravid at slip.Mishra was immediately called back into the attack, and he ended Watson’s resistance on 78, trapping him on the back foot with a slider. Soon after, the flight did it for Peter Siddle, who failed to get his back foot down before Dhoni completed a smart stumping. Mishra’s 5 for 71 was the best return for an Indian bowler on debut since Narendra Hirwani’s 8 for 61 against West Indies in 1988. Fittingly, the camera panned to a beaming Hirwani, now a selector, in the pavilion. Plenty had been written about India’s persistence with two spinners, and Mishra stepped up commendably. He didn’t get a lot of turn, but got enough, and his fearlessness to toss the ball up was refreshing.Expectedly, Mahendra Singh Dhoni did not enforce the follow-on. Australia needed wickets but Ricky Ponting spread the field and started with one slip. Gautam Gambhir survived a vociferous leg-before shout off the first ball from Lee and opened up with a pleasing square drive. Virender Sehwag batted aggressively and received support from Gambhir who played a couple of superb drives either side of the pitch. India’s 50 was up in 12 overs and, soon after, Siddle pitched the ball up and Sehwag slammed him over extra-cover. Sehwag’s fifty took 68 balls and he promised much more on day four. The day began with Australia in difficulty at 102 for 4 and ended with them facing the prospect of chasing a gigantic target.

Rangers transfer claim on Kent

Paul Robinson has claimed that Glasgow Rangers will now be able to keep Ryan Kent away from the clutches of Leeds United.

The Lowdown: Leeds interest

Leeds United have previously been linked with a move for Kent, although the summer window is now shut.

However, after they announced the signing of Dan James from Manchester United on Transfer Deadline Day, it is not clear whether they would still revisit their interest in the Englishman in January.

The Latest: Robinson on Kent

Speaking to Football Insider, former Whites and Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper now pundit Robinson has claimed that any potential move for Kent to his old team is now dead and buried after the arrival of James to Elland Road:

“I always knew it would be a difficult one for Leeds to pull off.

“Rangers under Gerrard are a different prospect to what they were, they have the potential to compete and fight on all fronts.

“Leeds would probably have been priced out of a move. Now Dan James has come I think that one is dead in the water.

“He hasn’t started the season particularly well. Now with the window shut hopefully that gives him some stability and he can turn that form around.”

The Verdict: Keep

The Ibrox faithful must look to keep hold of their best players for as long as possible, and Kent is certainly one of them.

Described as ‘fantastic’ by former Light Blues right-back Alan Hutton, the winger scored an impressive 13 goals and supplied a further 15 assists in 52 games in total across all competitions across the 2020/21 season (Transfermarkt).

Nonetheless, he still has potential to develop even more at just 24 years of age, and will only get better under the management of Steven Gerrard.

Thus, the Gers need to stand firm with a huge valuation, in case Leeds do end up revisiting their interest despite James’ signing.

'Ponting's poor record is an advantage for us' – Zaheer

Indian fast bowler Zaheer Khan feels Ricky Ponting’s poor record in India, where he averages 12.28 in eight Tests, could prove decisive in the outcome of the four-Test series next month

Zaheer Khan, the India fast bowler, believes Ricky Ponting’s miserable record in India could prove decisive in the four-Test series that starts next month. Ponting averages 12.28 in eight Tests in India, making it by far his least productive venue in a career during which he has averaged 58.37.”Ponting’s poor record is an advantage for us,” Zaheer told the Indian news channel NDTV. “This could be his last series as a captain, [and] if you see his statements in the press you can make out he is under pressure.”Ponting had earlier said he was desperate to improve his average in India, his lowest in any country. His aggregate of 17 runs in the three Tests in 2000-01 is his worst in any Test series. When Australia last visited India in 2004-05 the visitors won 2-1 – their first series win in India for 35 years – but Zaheer said the past did not matter. “We have been playing very good cricket lately, and we have to play very good cricket to beat Australia. We are playing to our strengths and are not bothered about what they [Australia] are doing.”We are just thinking about what we have to do over the coming one and a half months. The Australian team relies a lot on [Matthew] Hayden and it will be good to get him out early.”Zaheer, currently playing for Rest of India in the Irani Cup, hoped to use the match as practice for Australia. “The Irani Cup will definitely help me get into that match fitness mode,” he said. “We are looking to get some good match practice and this [Irani Cup] has definitely helped us.”Zaheer also had words of encouragement for fellow new-ball bowler Ishant Sharma, who has recovered from an injury sustained in Sri Lanka. “He’s running in, he’s fearless and he’s learning and it’s better he’s left alone,” Zaheer said. “We are moving forward as far as fast bowling is concerned. There was a concern in the past, but now we have so many fast bowlers it’s a great help for the Indian team.”

Shreck named as Notts player of season

The Nottinghamshire seamer, Charlie Shreck, was crowned Player of the Season at the club’s annual awards dinner at Trent Bridge on Tuesday

Cricinfo staff01-Oct-2008The Nottinghamshire seamer, Charlie Shreck, was crowned Player of the Season at the club’s annual awards dinner at Trent Bridge on Tuesday. Shreck was the club’s leading wicket-taker in 2008, taking 76 wickets in all competitions, 58 of them in the County Championship.”It’s an honour and a surprise to win the award because a few of my team mates would have been considered worthy winners,” said Shreck. “Mark Wagh scored 1,000 runs, Samit has been exceptional, Darren Pattinson has done very well and Chris Read has proved to be an excellent captain.”It has been a good season for the club and although we were disappointed to miss out on the LV County Championship in the final game of the season, we have finished second which is a great achievement.”The Notts squad travel to Guernsey today to take part in benefit events for AJ Harris and Shreck believes that the club can mount a serious challenge for silverware in 2009.”We’ve had a good experience this year and we know what we’ve got to do to win it in 2009,” said Shreck. “Durham came second in 2007 and won it this year. We’ll have broadly the same squad and we’ll all be more even determined because we came so close.”We’ve got a couple of dinners, a golf day and some cricket lined up in Guernsey and it will be a good chance to relax after a long season.”Test Match Special broadcaster Jonathan Agnew was the guest speaker at the awards dinner with speeches from Notts Chairman Peter Wright, Chief Executive Derek Brewer and Director of Cricket Mick Newell.Alex Hales was named Second XI Player of The Season for the second successive year and Sam Kelsall picked up the Academy Player of the Year Award.

Sheff Utd tipped to make ‘huge’ signing

Former Sheffield United hero Paddy Kenny has urged the Blades to complete a summer loan move for Manchester United youngster Amad Diallo.

The Lowdown: Diallo shines for Man United

Diallo made the move to Old Trafford back in January, joining from Serie A side Atalanta and scoring once in eight appearances.

The 19-year-old has impressed when given the chance – his goal was a superb headed effort against AC Milan in the Europa League –  but he has been linked with a loan move to Bramall Lane this summer.

The Latest: Blades urged to sign youngster

Speaking to Football Insider, Kenny talked up the idea of Diallo joining the Blades over a Premier League club, saying it is a deal that could suit all parties:

“It would be a big mistake. He’s 19 years old and he hasn’t played many games at a senior level. Why not go out and ply your trade at a massive club like Sheffield United?

“They haven’t had the best of starts but they will still want to be pushing for promotion. It would be a great opportunity for him and huge for Sheff U.

“They paid ridiculous money for him. He wants to play in the Premier League but he’s only played seven or eight games in his career.

“Get him out there, go an let him express himself and give him a chance to prove himself before he goes back Man United.”

The Verdict: Would be a huge addition

United have made a disappointing start to the season under Slavisa Jokanovic, but Diallo is someone who could help turn their Championship season around.

He has been hailed for playing ‘like Messi’ by former Atalanta teammate Papu Gomez, which speaks volumes about the talent he possesses.

If the Blades could get a deal over the line it could have the potential to ignite their promotion push and help Diallo mature as a player.

In other news, Sheffield United have rejected a bid for one player – find out who it is here.

Slavisa Jokanovic drops transfer claim

Slavisa Jokanovic has dropped an update on Sheffield United’s remaining summer transfer business.

What’s been said?

In recent comments cited by The Star, the Blades boss revealed that he would like to make another four or five signings between now and the closure of the summer transfer window next Tuesday.

The report goes on to mention the fact that United’s only signing since the 53-year-old manager’s arrival at Bramall Lane has been the addition of Liverpool centre-back Ben Davies on a season-long loan deal, while the Serbian has also seen a move for Sampdoria midfielder Ronaldo Vieira fall through.

Addressing the remainder of Sheffield United’s transfer business, Jokanovic said: “I want four or five new players. It’s not important if it’s close or not because we’re [only] days until the end and we urgently need new faces, fresh blood. We need more confidence to be competitive for everything that is ahead of us.”

Music to the ears of fans

Considering just how poorly United have started their 2021/22 Championship campaign, picking up just one point and scoring a single goal over their opening four fixtures of the season, it is indeed evident that the Blades are in need of further additions to their first-team squad ahead of Tuesday’s transfer deadline.

And, considering the fact that Jokanovic recently sanctioned the £24m sale of Aaron Ramsdale, the Serbian manager’s comments suggesting that he is looking to reinvest this money in the current market are sure to be music to the ears of the Bramall Lane faithful.

Indeed, the Blades squad appears to be lacking depth in a number of areas of the pitch, with the signing of a new first-choice goalkeeper, a central midfielder and at least two wingers looking to be the priority positions for the 53-year-old in the coming days.

As such, if the United boss can indeed plug these particular gaps in his squad prior to the closure of the summer transfer window next week, it would undoubtedly be a huge boost for the Blades, who are very much in need of a spark to kickstart their Championship campaign.

Flintoff breaks his losing streak

Plays of the day from the final day of the fourth Test at The Oval

It was a tough day for Morne Morkel as he struggle to find his line…except to first slip © AFP
Luck of the dayAndrew Strauss had yet to settle in an arduous first hour, and had inched along to 4 not out from 30 balls when he shuffled across his crease to clip Morne Morkel firmly off his hip … and straight into the hands of Ashwell Prince at leg gully. It was a perfect plan, perfectly executed – Prince had only moved to that position one delivery earlier – but Morkel’s galumphing front foot ruined the moment. He had overstepped by several inches, and as the moment went begging, so too did South Africa’s attacking intent.Single of the dayIt was a fairly unremarkable moment, which came 47 minutes into the day’s play. Another leg-stump delivery from Morkel, and another deflection off the hip from Strauss – although this time he managed to avoid any fielders. As he and Cook jogged through for a single, however, it was the first time in 66 deliveries that the two batsmen had switched ends. Up until that point they had traded exclusively in boundaries – three for Cook, and a solitary clip through midwicket from Strauss.Delivery of the dayIt wasn’t quite as high-profile as the one that Steve Harmison winged down at Brisbane, but the delivery was almost as awful. Bowling around the wicket to the left-handed Cook, Morkel pitched his delivery way outside off stump, found enough swing to take it even further out of the batsman’s reach, and Smith at slip cupped his hands to take a screamer high above his head.Statistic of the dayHe is renowned as a matchwinner, but Andrew Flintoff has been anything but in recent matches. In an injury-affected run that dates back to the third Test against Sri Lanka at Trent Bridge in June 2006, he had taken part in eight consecutive defeats – including five in a row in that winter’s Ashes, and back-to-back reversals at Headingley and Edgbaston in this series.Shot of the dayIt was something of a cathartic moment, therefore, when Flintoff strode down the wicket to Paul Harris with five runs required for victory, and launched him high and handsome towards the pavilion for the 80th six of his 70-match Test career. It was a blow that brought him level with Matthew Hayden in fifth place on the all-time six-hitters’ table, and he’s now only four adrift of the Master Blaster, Viv Richards, in fourth place, with Brian Lara (88) and Chris Cairns (87) also in his sights. Adam Gilchrist’s record of 100 maximums might take a few more years to overhaul, however.
