Jacques Kallis appears to be winning his fitness battle to play some part in the first Test against England although he remains extremely doubtful to bowl at Centurion Park. Kallis had another lengthy net on the final day of South Africa’s camp in Potchefstroom and will now travel with the squad back to Johannesburg.It seems likely that Kallis will take his place as a specialist batsman on Wednesday with South Africa shaping up to have a four-man attack. Dale Steyn bowled at full tilt on Sunday and barring any late reaction to his hamstring problem is ready to be unleashed on England’s batsmen.”The position is that everyone is on track to be fit for the Test,” said a South Africa team spokesman. “Kallis has had two lengthy nets, yesterday and today, and will continue to build up as we get nearer the time. Dale is bowling full out and everyone else is where they should be.”The spokesman confirmed that Kallis hadn’t bowled during the training camp, but couldn’t elaborate on the chances of him playing as a full allrounder next week. However, team sources have indicated to Cricinfo that this remains a distant prospect.Sunday was billed as d-day for Kallis, but given that he is due for another session in an oxygen chamber on Monday it was always unlikely that South Africa would have made a drastic decision three days out from the Test, unless he had broken down again in Potchefstroom. Also, heading into such an important series, there is the possibility of some mind games over what role Kallis will play. South Africa don’t need to give England any extra boost by putting out too many negative ideas.While Steyn’s recovery is also crucial for South Africa, the most eye-catching bowling effort during the two days of skills practice was that of Morne Morkel who extracted considerable bounce from a centre-wicket session. A recall for Morkel, who was dropped for South Africa’s last Test against Australia in March, would keep Wayne Parnell out of the final XI.When Morkel was brought back for the one-day series he made life uncomfortable for a number of England batsmen, notably Andrew Strauss when he came round the wicket at the England captain. There have been questions asked recently about the potency of South Africa’s attack, with Steyn having had a dip in form and Makhaya Ntini’s productivity decreasing, so Morkel will be needed to add another edge. Paul Harris, the left-arm spinner and fourth member of the probable four-man unit, can expect an increased workload if Kallis is unable to bowl.Both teams have lingering injury concerns heading into Centurion with England keeping close tabs on James Anderson’s knee after his workout in East London. It isn’t an ideal way for teams to prepare and the final answer on both fronts probably won’t be 100% clear until Wednesday morning.

Following Newcastle United’s first league win of the season last weekend against Burnley, Magpies boss Eddie Howe will be keen to have a fresh bill of health as they travel to face a Leicester City side who may be short on confidence on Sunday afternoon.

Newcastle defender Fabian Schär set up Callum Wilson’s winner against the Clarets as well as keeping a clean sheet in a 1-0 victory. However, the 29-year-old required treatment during the game and missed training earlier in the week.

When speaking ahead of the trip to the King Power Stadium, Howe stated that there were a “couple of knocks and niggles” in the squad and that Schär “had a rib problem earlier in the week and missed a bit of training” but “hopefully he’ll be ok.”

The Swiss international has started all four of Howe’s games in charge of the Toon Army thus far, having previously not featured since late August, and has already proved to be a key asset for the new manager.

Granted, the defender had a quiet game against Burnley, making three clearances and blocking one shot according to SofaScore. Schär may have had an assist but also posted a passing accuracy of just 42% and lost possession 20 times in what was a mixed performance.

However, having played just six times this season, Schär is still bound to be rusty and could well be a key player for Howe once he reaches his peak form.

United are also set to welcome back Ciaran Clark from suspension after the Irishman was sent off early in the 1-1 draw with Norwich City, further boosting Howe’s defensive arsenal this weekend.

With Jamaal Lascelles also fit after his recent return from suspension, Howe suddenly has the welcome luxury of deciding which centre-back out of the three now available will be dropped, with the formation of a strong defensive partnership key to United’s survival hopes this season.

Either way, the Toon Army will be surely buzzing to hear that Schär could be good to go this weekend, especially given his recent resurgence under the new manager.

Glen Batticciotto posted his maiden first-class century and had solid support from Chris Hartley as Queensland set up a terrific lead over Tasmania. At the close of the second day, the Bulls’ advantage had swelled to 226 thanks to late runs from Chris Swan, who was on 82, while Scott Walter was yet to score.It was a tough day in the field for Tasmania and while Brett Geeves finished the day with 5 for 106, the dismissals were too infrequent for the Tigers’ liking. Batticciotto and Hartley combined for a 176-run partnership that took Queensland past Tasmania’s total of 156.Hartley was dropped twice in his 85 before he was caught behind off Geeves. Batticciotto, who was playing his second first-class game at the age of 28, registered 101 from 241 deliveries before he was bowled by Jason Krejza with the Bulls already enjoying a 100-plus lead.The late runs from Swan were a bonus as he scored at nearly a run a ball and he will be eyeing a potential maiden first-class hundred on the third morning. His runs capped off an excellent day for the Bulls, who lost only five wickets after an opening day on which the bowlers collected 14 dismissals in swing-friendly conditions.

Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa has suffered a fresh injury blow with Rodrigo now ruled out for the Premier League clash against Chelsea this weekend.

A statement from the club read: “Rodrigo has been suffering from bilateral heel pain for some time. The player and medical staff have deemed it necessary to reduce his activity for the time being, in order to aid his long-term recovery.”

Bielsa will be worried

If you thought things were just beginning to ease up slightly for Leeds on the injury front with the returns of Luke Ayling and Patrick Bamford last weekend, think again.

The Whites’ disastrous luck with injuries has struck again, and not only will they be without talisman Kalvin Phillips for an extended period of time, their club-record signing in Rodrigo is set to be missing for a while too.

The Spaniard has scored just twice in 15 games in all competitions this term, and what has been particularly disappointing is that he has been given a runout as the sole centre-forward in Patrick Bamford’s absence.

The former Valencia man has shown flashes of his ability, and it was a particularly impressive performance against West Ham which really caught the eye of The Athletic’s Phil Hay.

Writing on Twitter, he said: “I thought Rodrigo’s false nine performance on Saturday was worth another look. Lots to admire and ponder in his positioning, movement, interplay and switches of position with Raphinha. More displays like that could spark Leeds United into life.”

With Rodrigo now out for the foreseeable future, even more of the goalscoring onus is placed on the shoulders of Bamford, who could really do with some help having just returned from injury himself.

This latest update on Rodrigo is sure to have Bielsa worried.

بينما كانت بداية دي بروين في نادي جينك قبل الانتقال إلى تشيلسي والرحيل فيما بعد إلى الدوري الألماني.

Era tudo muito novo porque nunca tinha saído do Santos. Foi a primeira vez que vesti outra camisa. Não sabia como seria e resolvi arriscar esse desafio. Foi bom para mim, para o amadurecimento, importante.

-Na minha passagem pelo Red Bull joguei bastante lá, é um estádio que conheço, não é um estádio que tem a qualidade como a da Vila, de gramado, como estamos acostumados. Com contrato até o fim de 2018, o campeão da Copa São Paulo de 2013 será um dos próximos a renovar com o Santos até 2022.

Você procurou saber por que o Dorival Júnior não te dava muitas chances?

No futebol é assim mesmo. O treinador tem as opções e cada um tem sua preferência. O mais importante é saber respeitar. Claro que é complicado não jogar, mas o importante é ter cabeça boa e saber respeitar. Fui profissional e soube respeitar o momento. O ponto é esse. O Dorival tinha opções e eu respeitei.

Como você lidou com as lesões e com o empréstimo até ser titular hoje?

Desde 2011, quando sofri a primeira lesão, passei por muita coisa difícil. E fui amadurecendo como pessoa e profissional. Tenho uma cabeça boa e estou mais maduro. Sei que o momento ruim não dura para sempre. Futebol é assim. Quando está passando por um momento difícil, tem que seguir trabalhando porque no futebol as coisas mudam muito rápido. Eu não jogava e depois de dois meses, estava sendo titular na Libertadores.

Você chegou ao Santos ainda criança logo após a conquista do Brasileirão de 2004. Chegou a ter algum contato com aquele time?

O time era muito falado, mas não acompanhava de perto porque o meu treino era em São Vicente, na Ferroviária. Esse contato com o time profissional não tinha, era pela televisão.

Como foi quando conheceu Robinho e Renato?

São situações que o futebol nos proporciona. Quando somos mais novos, só vemos pela televisão e eu tive oportunidade de conhecer Robinho, Renato, Neymar, Ganso, Elano. Todos esses jogadores tive a felicidade de jogar. Pra minha carreira é importante.

Na Copinha de 2013 você era um dos líderes do time, pedia a palavra antes dos jogos e motivava os companheiros. Planeja colocar essa liderança em prática agora que tem uma sequência jogando?

A liderança é uma coisa natural. Hoje temos vários líderes, Ricardo Oliveira, Renato, David Braz, Vanderlei, Victor Ferraz. Eu sou mais um. Na Copinha pediam para eu dar uma acelerada na rapaziada. Por isso eu tomava a palavra. Acho que no profissional tem grandes líderes, o Ricardo é o principal. Estou tranquilo.

Despite this, the West Midlands club sit just one point off of the top-six, largely down to their solidity at the back. In fact, only Chelsea (6) and Manchester City (8) have conceded fewer goals than Wolves (12) this term.

However, their attacking woes are certainly a cause for concern. Together, Hwang Hee-Chan (4) and Raúl Jiménez (3) have scored over half of Wolves’ Premier League goals with three coming from defenders, one from a midfielder (Ruben Neves) and the other an own-goal.

The attacking trio of Daniel Podence, Francisco Trincão and Adama Traoré are all yet to score in the Premier League this season, despite a combined 1,954 minutes of action, which begs the question: what must Bruno Lage change?

It’s clear to see that a change of personnel in the Wolves forward line would do no harm and 19-year-old Fábio Silva could be the man to turn to.

The Portuguese forward was purchased for £36m from Porto last summer by previous manager Nuno Espirito Santo, having been dubbed as “the new Cristiano Ronaldo”.

However, Silva’s fellow countryman Lage has offered the youngster very few opportunities, with the striker playing just 36 minutes of Premier League football this season.

Furthermore, it appears that Silva is yet to win over Wolves fans, with journalist Tim Spiers claiming that the 19-year-old has taken “enormous stick”.

Nuno certainly showed faith in the Porto academy product, handing him 32 league appearances last season, in which he scored four goals. It wasn’t the best goals return, but for a then 18-year-old, there was certainly promise on display.

Despite the current first-choice striker at the club being Jimenez, whose place in the side looks all but certain, there is an opportunity for Silva to feature more regularly under Lage; he will have to improvise though.

With the 45-year-old manager regularly deploying a 3-4-3 formation, Silva would have to operate as a winger to get into the side. This is a task the youngster should grab with both hands.

Despite Hwang, none of the wide men at Wolves have impressed, particularly Adama Traore who, once again, has proven frustrating for the Molineux faithful with little end product offered this term.

Ahead of Wolves’ next game against Liverpool, Lage said: “Fabio is important for us. He’s a young talent. Me and my staff have a pathway for the youth. Luis (Nascimento) worked with Fabio before so we see potential in him.

“He needs to continue to work and wait for that chance. He needs to work for today and work for tomorrow.

“He’s doing well and we are happy with him, but sometimes I prefer to take different solutions to protect the result.”

The Portuguese manager has also denied claims that Silva could be loaned out in January so, with a busy festive period to come, now is the time to unleash the £22.5m-rated Silva and for the 19-year-old to secure a regular place in the Wolves setup.
