No domingo, o time carioca recebe o Corinthians na Ilha do Urubu.

Kallis likely to play at Centurion

Jacques Kallis appears to be winning his fitness battle to play some part in the first Test against England although he remains extremely doubtful to bowl at Centurion Park. Kallis had another lengthy net on the final day of South Africa’s camp in Potchefstroom and will now travel with the squad back to Johannesburg. It seems likely that Kallis will take his place as a specialist batsman on Wednesday with South Africa shaping up to have a four-man attack. Dale Steyn bowled at full tilt on Sunday and barring any late reaction to his hamstring problem is ready to be unleashed on England’s batsmen.”The position is that everyone is on track to be fit for the Test,” said a South Africa team spokesman. “Kallis has had two lengthy nets, yesterday and today, and will continue to build up as we get nearer the time. Dale is bowling full out and everyone else is where they should be.”The spokesman confirmed that Kallis hadn’t bowled during the training camp, but couldn’t elaborate on the chances of him playing as a full allrounder next week. However, team sources have indicated to Cricinfo that this remains a distant prospect.Sunday was billed as d-day for Kallis, but given that he is due for another session in an oxygen chamber on Monday it was always unlikely that South Africa would have made a drastic decision three days out from the Test, unless he had broken down again in Potchefstroom. Also, heading into such an important series, there is the possibility of some mind games over what role Kallis will play. South Africa don’t need to give England any extra boost by putting out too many negative ideas. While Steyn’s recovery is also crucial for South Africa, the most eye-catching bowling effort during the two days of skills practice was that of Morne Morkel who extracted considerable bounce from a centre-wicket session. A recall for Morkel, who was dropped for South Africa’s last Test against Australia in March, would keep Wayne Parnell out of the final XI.When Morkel was brought back for the one-day series he made life uncomfortable for a number of England batsmen, notably Andrew Strauss when he came round the wicket at the England captain. There have been questions asked recently about the potency of South Africa’s attack, with Steyn having had a dip in form and Makhaya Ntini’s productivity decreasing, so Morkel will be needed to add another edge. Paul Harris, the left-arm spinner and fourth member of the probable four-man unit, can expect an increased workload if Kallis is unable to bowl. Both teams have lingering injury concerns heading into Centurion with England keeping close tabs on James Anderson’s knee after his workout in East London. It isn’t an ideal way for teams to prepare and the final answer on both fronts probably won’t be 100% clear until Wednesday morning.

A gente sente falta.

Fabian Schär available for NUFC V LCFC

Following Newcastle United’s first league win of the season last weekend against Burnley, Magpies boss Eddie Howe will be keen to have a fresh bill of health as they travel to face a Leicester City side who may be short on confidence on Sunday afternoon.

Newcastle defender Fabian Schär set up Callum Wilson’s winner against the Clarets as well as keeping a clean sheet in a 1-0 victory. However, the 29-year-old required treatment during the game and missed training earlier in the week.

What’s the latest?

When speaking ahead of the trip to the King Power Stadium, Howe stated that there were a “couple of knocks and niggles” in the squad and that Schär “had a rib problem earlier in the week and missed a bit of training” but “hopefully he’ll be ok.”

The Swiss international has started all four of Howe’s games in charge of the Toon Army thus far, having previously not featured since late August, and has already proved to be a key asset for the new manager.

Granted, the defender had a quiet game against Burnley, making three clearances and blocking one shot according to SofaScore. Schär may have had an assist but also posted a passing accuracy of just 42% and lost possession 20 times in what was a mixed performance.

However, having played just six times this season, Schär is still bound to be rusty and could well be a key player for Howe once he reaches his peak form.

United are also set to welcome back Ciaran Clark from suspension after the Irishman was sent off early in the 1-1 draw with Norwich City, further boosting Howe’s defensive arsenal this weekend.

With Jamaal Lascelles also fit after his recent return from suspension, Howe suddenly has the welcome luxury of deciding which centre-back out of the three now available will be dropped, with the formation of a strong defensive partnership key to United’s survival hopes this season.

Either way, the Toon Army will be surely buzzing to hear that Schär could be good to go this weekend, especially given his recent resurgence under the new manager.

West Indies look to upset England in final ODI

The West Indies women’s team is confident of beating England in the final ODI to clinch the series 2-1

Cricinfo staff07-Nov-2009West Indies women have fancied their chances of winning the final ODI against England in St Kitts and taking the series 2-1. Their coach, the former opener Sherwin Campbell, said the team was upbeat ahead of the final match at Warner Park and were confident of an upset.”We now have the final ODI on Saturday and I believe we have a realistic chance of beating England and winning the series,” he said. “There is self-belief in this team and a lot of confidence.”West Indies won the first ODI by 40 runs and narrowly lost the second by 13 runs. The loss on Thursday led England to level the series one all. Rainford-Brent made 72 opening the batting and had solid support from Jenny Gunn, who was promoted to No. 3 and scored 57, as England reached 232 for 5 having chosen to bat first. Stafanie Taylor proved a handful with the ball, collecting 3 for 29 from her ten overs, but she was unable to carry that momentum into the West Indies innings when she was the first out for 2.West Indies were unable to chase despite a cautious 57 from opener Pamela Lavine. Merissa Aguilleira kept the scorecard ticking with her 44 but was run out by Holly Colvin in the 46th over.Campbell was pleased with his team’s effort despite the loss. “On Thursday we could not complete the job but I thought we played well,” he said. “There was a bit of panic there at the end and I felt our inexperience at this level is what beat us.”

Bowlers keep Yorks title march on

An emphatic a win as Yorkshire could have imagined over a Nottinghamshire side that ought to be higher in the table took them 33 points clear in Division One

This was as emphatic a win as Yorkshire could have imagined over a Nottinghamshire side that ought to be higher in the table but the notion that the race for the title is as good as over can be dismissed as premature.Yorkshire have a 33-point lead as things stand, at least over Sussex and Middlesex, but the margin may well be cut by Durham before the weekend is complete, unless the weather has a major say at Chester-le-Street. Durham, with a match in hand, are next up for Yorkshire at Scarborough, followed by Sussex at Hove and Middlesex at Headingley. The title may be Yorkshire’s to lose – but one sub-standard performance might give the table a different look quite quickly. This is the thought in Martyn Moxon’s mind at least. “I think we’ve shown we’re capable of winning [the title],” Yorkshire’s director of cricket said. “If you take the first game of the season against Sussex out of it, we’ve played some fantastic cricket for the last 11 games.”But we have to close it out. We’re trying not to get too far ahead of ourselves. We know we have some tough games and we have Durham, Sussex and Middlesex – the top teams – all to play yet, and Surrey in the last game are going to be scrapping as well.”We’ve won nothing yet and over four games a lot can happen, with a lot of points available. We’re enjoying the wins as everyone does but the first words the captain said in the dressing room after the game were ‘let’s just keep doing what we’re doing and not get carried away’.”It might be an idea to summon Mick Newell to deliver a few words ahead of the Durham match if they want to give some context to this performance, impressive though it was at times, especially when Ryan Sidebottom and Steve Patterson were taking it in turns to make batsmen of international pedigree seem relatively ordinary. The two seamers shared 12 wickets in the match, with Sidebottom’s seven a painful reminder to the Notts director of cricket that his bowling resources need a fair amount of rebuilding yet to restore the standards that prevailed before Sidebottom left two years ago, in search of a longer contract than Notts were prepared to offer.”Over the first two days we were really outplayed by Yorkshire but our bowling in the first innings allowed Yorkshire to dominate the match,” he said. “We have not taken 20 wickets in a match since May and if you don’t take 20 wickets you don’t win. It is an area we need to strengthen.”We have been criticised in the past for not having a strong enough spin-bowling attack but when our seam bowling has been as disappointing as it has been in this match we have an issue there too, certainly since this is a wicket we would have wanted to bowl on.”Over the last few years we have lost Ryan, Darren Pattinson, Charlie Shreck and Mark Ealham and we have been trying to be competitive in Division One while having a big turnover, particularly of fast bowlers. In Luke Fletcher and Harry Gurney we have two lads who have potential but are inexperienced, while Andre Adams is not quite on his game. So we looked a bit lightweight there compared to an attack like Yorkshire’s, full of experience, who have come down here and bowled very well.”There was never much doubt that Yorkshire would win from the moment Nottinghamshire slumped to 65 for 8 on day two, in reply to a Yorkshire total of 407 that can rarely have been bettered here by a side invited to bat first. They followed on 257 behind and while there was some improvement on the third morning, when Nottinghamshire progressed from 118 for 4 overnight to 217 for 7 at lunch, it was merely delaying the inevitable. Chris Read, whose lack of form with the bat this year has been another factor in his side’s modest season, completed his first half-century this year. Not since 2003 has the captain and wicketkeeper completed a first-class season without a century, or contributed between 700 and 1200 runs.In the event, they obliged Yorkshire to bat again, thanks to Read and another lively thrash by Adams, his second in the match, but three boundaries in five deliveries by Adam Lyth, whose 95 was the highest score in the game, completed the job without fuss.Sidebottom’s seven wickets neatly took him to 597 in his first-class career, one more than his father, Arnie, achieved and from 43 fewer matches.”I suppose it’s an honour and a privilege really to go past dad,” he said. “He had a fantastic career himself and to follow in his footsteps was something I’ve always wanted to do.”I’ll give him a buzz in a bit with a beer in my hand and I might buy him a bottle of whisky to say I’ve gone past him. But I’ve still got a few years left in me yet and I’d like to go way past him if I can. I think 700 would be nice before I finish. I don’t know if that will be achievable, but it would be a nice little swansong.”
