Tillakaratne Dilshan, the explosive Sri Lanka batsman, has signed with New South Wales for next summer’s Twenty20 domestic competition. New South Wales won the Champions League Twenty20 last year but did not requalify for the lucrative tournament and have wasted no time in securing a big name to partner the likes of David Warner and Phillip Hughes.Dilshan is currently with the Delhi Daredevils in the IPL, is signed up with the English county Sussex, and has also played for New Zealand’s Northern Districts this season. Dave Gilbert, the New South Wales chief executive, said Dilshan was one of the world’s most destructive batsmen in the format.”We look forward to him playing a leading role in helping New South Wales win next season’s Big Bash and thereby qualifying for the Champions League,” Gilbert said. Dilshan, 33, has played 60 Tests, 174 ODIs and 23 T20 internationals for Sri Lanka.

NUFC: Target makes key decision on move

A major update has emerged on Newcastle United’s pursuit of Manchester United’s Donny van de Beek…

What’s the talk?

According to The Telegraph, the Magpies made contact with the midfielder to speak about a potential loan deal and were met with a firm decision in response – no.

The report claims that he told the club that he does not want to arrive at St. James’ Park on loan and part of his reasoning is their battle against relegation at the bottom of the table.

Gutted

Nick Hammond is facing his first blunder of the January transfer window for Newcastle by missing out on a deal to sign van de Beek as fans will be left gutted.

The report indicates that discussions were had between the two parties leading up to the player’s final decision and this suggests that the transfer chief did not do enough to convince him.

Newcastle’s pitch was not tantalising enough to tempt the Dutchman into ditching Old Trafford to join the Magpies and this could be an error as he could have been an excellent addition to the squad. Although he has struggled for game time at Manchester United, he has previously proven his quality for Ajax in the Eredivisie and the Champions League.

Back in 2020, Scott McTominay praised his character and believed that his game time would increase. He told Sky Sports:

“Donny van de Beek is a great lad and a brilliant football player. I’m sure, the way he is working in training and how hard he’s working, his time will definitely come to get more minutes on the pitch.”

However, that has not been the case and he has played 69 minutes of Premier League football for the Red Devils this season. This comes after he made 19 appearances last term, four starts, and played 515 minutes in the English top-flight.

In the 2018/19 campaign, he produced 12 goals and 12 assists from midfield in the Eredivisie and Champions League combined. He averaged a WhoScored rating of 7.16 across 12 matches in the latter, showing that he can produce quality displays on a regular basis at the top level, which is why Newcastle fans will be gutted that he has decided not to join the club.

It is now down to Hammond, Eddie Howe and PIF to either change his mind and seal a transfer or identify alternative targets who can come in and have an impact on the side.

AND in other news, “They’d like to sign..”: Reporter delivers big NUFC transfer claim, it’ll excite Howe…

Everton can axe Seamus Coleman

Everton have made their second signing of the transfer window, with Nathan Patterson joining the club in a deal worth £16m, as Rafa Benitez continues to put his stamp on the struggling side.

The 20-year-old right-back has been making a name for himself in Scotland, with an incredible performance in the national team scoring a goal and assisting teammate Che Adams against Moldova in a World Cup Qualifier that secured Scotland a play off place for the Qatar World Cup.

He also made five appearances in Steven Gerrard’s invincible title-winning Rangers side last year in the Scottish Premiership and scored one goal in their Europa League game against Young Boys too.

With the signing secured, it could be an opportunity for Rafa Benitez to finally axe Everton veteran and current club captain, Seamus Coleman, from the side, with the Irishman now 33-years-old, Patterson could be integrated into the starting team over the next few months to replace him.

Coleman signed for the Toffees back in 2010, offering up 364 appearances, 26 goals and 32 assists during his time with the club, becoming skipper in August 2019, following Phil Jagielka’s departure, but whilst currently in his 13th season for the club, his time could be coming to end.

Former sporting director, Marcel Brands, had already begun putting into place a plan for the right back to stay with the club in a role off the pitch when he decides to retire from playing in the side, speaking last year at an Everton USA live event:

“I’m now already in talks with him to get him involved in, let’s say, things off the pitch. He’s definitely someone I really want to keep in the club after he finishes his career. He’s a great example for everyone.”

The £68k-per-week gem who was hailed the “full package” by former Toffees boss, Sam Allardyce, has not had the best season in the Everton side so far, according to SofaScore the defender has lost the ball on average 17.3 times per game, and has only made 1.3 interceptions on average over his last 14 appearances in the Premier League.

It will be interesting to see how Benitez will handle the task of phasing out Coleman whilst integrating Patterson into the side, whether he will just drop the Everton captain or ease the young new addition in the side over the last 18 months of his predecessor’s contract.

Celtic plotting swoop for Martin Boyle

Celtic are interested in a deal to bring Martin Boyle to Parkhead in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by The Times (via the Glasgow Evening Times), who claim that Ange Postecoglou’s Celtic side are keeping a very close eye on the Hibernian winger ahead of a potential swoop this month.

The report goes on to state that Hibs will demand a fee in the region of £3m in order to part with the 28-year-old, with a number of Middle Eastern clubs also reported to be keen on the Australia international.

Speaking about Boyle earlier this season, Postecoglou said: “I know Martin really well. I was pretty pleased when he chose to play for Australia because there was a bit of an arm wrestle when it came to who he was going to play for.

“He’s done really well for the national team so I’m well aware of him. He’s a good player and it’s not easy playing for Australia. Unlike other national teams, he’s got to do long-haul travel and getting back to this part of the world isn’t easy. So he’s handled that really well.”

Postecoglou could repeat Stokes masterclass

Considering just how impressive Boyle has been for Hibs so far this season, it is unsurprising to learn of Postecoglou’s interest in the forward – particularly considering the pair’s link via the Australian national side.

Indeed, over his 19 Premiership outings in the current campaign, the £2.25m-rated man has already scored a very respectable seven goals, registered three assists and created six big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 2.4 shots and making 1.6 key passes per game.

These returns have seen the player who Neil Lennon dubbed an “outstanding” talent average a SofaScore match rating of 7.12, ranking him as Hibs’ best performer in the top flight of Scottish football this term.

As such, considering his impressive eye for goal and the fact he plays his football at Easter Road, Potecoglou could go on to replicate Celtic’s masterclass of the £1.31m signing of Anthony Stokes back in 2010 – a player who went on to score a whopping 76 goals and provide 64 assists over just 192 appearances for the Bhoys.

Indeed, should Celtic manage to prise Boyle away from Hibs this January, we would not bet against the winger having a similar impact to that of the former Republic of Ireland international, with the 28-year-old appearing to be a superb candidate to add further depth to the Bhoys’ wide attacking options ahead of the second half of the season.

Batsmen lead UAE to victory

Qadar Nawaz celebrates David Obuya’s dismissal on the way to UAE’s shock victory•International Cricket Council

Scorecard
The UAE batsmen continued a day of upsets at the World Twenty20 Qualifiers, by setting up an unlikely victory against Kenya in Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.Following on from USA’s victory over Scotland and Ireland’s defeat to Afghanistan, the home captain Khurram Khan won the toss and chose to bat. On a flat pitch the openers made light work of the Kenyan bowlers, coasting to 35 inside four overs before Mohammad Iqbal was defeated by Lameck Onyango for 20. Wicketkeeper Abdul Rehman fell soon after to the medium-pace of youngster Nelson Odhiambo. It brought Saqib Ali to join Arfan Haider at the crease and the two calmly put on 61 in eight overs for the third wicket. Left-hander Haider flayed five fours and two sixes on his way to 59, his first Twenty20 International fifty before he was eventually dismissed by the impressive Nelson Odhiambo, caught by Hiren Varaiya. With the total at 103 for 2 off 13 overs, his dismissal could have sparked a Kenyan revival. Instead Khan came out and clubbed four boundaries from his 19 balls, sharing a 41-run stand in 25 balls with Ali. They fell in quick succession to leave UAE 144 for 5 with 11 balls to go. Naeemuddin Aslam and Shadeep Silva scampered 21 runs to leave UAE with a competitive 165.Given the form of their top-order in the recent matches, Kenya would have fancied their chances of chasing down the total against an inexperienced team but dangerous opener David Obuya couldn’t get away as he was caught by Qasim Zubair off Qadar Nawaz for 2 in the second over.Steve Tikilo, one of the most gifted and experienced batsmen in Associate cricket, then looked to arrest the momentum stroking four quick boundaries. Having raced to 25 from 18 balls he was trapped lbw to Silva’s left-arm spin. Silva struck again in his next over, removing Alex Obanda in the same fashion for 13, to leave Kenya facing a daunting 116 from 11.5 overs.Captain Maurice Ouma and Collins Obuya did their best in a 69-run partnership for the fourth wicket, but couldn’t score at the rate required. Given the situation they were strangely becalmed and by the time Ouma was dismissed for 39 by Ahmed Raza in the 18th over 47 runs were still needed. Jimmy Kamande and Collins Obuya upped the scoring rate but it wasn’t to be. Kenya finished 15 runs short to give hosts UAE a chance of causing a major upset in the tournament and progressing to their first global tournament since the 1996 World Cup..Speaking after the game Khurram Khan said that the Twenty20 format is one that suits his side. “Everything went right for us today. Batting first, we set ourselves a good target and then bowled and fielded well to restrict Kenya. We’re very good at Twenty20 cricket and it’s something we do well at. It’s really a game where two overs can change everything, whether you’re batting or bowling.”

Spurs: Conte must axe Ndombele vs Saints

Antonio Conte’s Tottenham Hotspur side head into Tuesday afternoon’s Premier League fixture against Southampton in an excellent run of domestic form, with Spurs yet to suffer defeat under the management of the 52-year-old on English soil.

The latest fixture in this run was the highly impressive 3-0 win over Crystal Palace on Sunday afternoon, a game in which almost every Tottenham player on the pitch enjoyed a fine performance.

However, there was one Spurs man who did not enjoy the finest of displays against Patrick Vieira’s side, something which has become a bit of a theme in recent weeks, in the shape of Tanguy Ndombele.

Conte must not start Ndombele

While the £34.2m-rated midfielder only featured for 11 minutes at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium at the weekend, he failed to make any impact on the game whatsoever – something which could cost Conte and his side dearly if he is given the opportunity to start against Southampton this afternoon.

Indeed, the France international who Tim Sherwood dubbed a “maverick” had just 11 touches of the ball, completed a mere nine passes, lost all three of his attempted duels, gave away possession of the ball once, was dribbled past by an opponent once and conceded one foul.

These returns saw the £120k-per-week midfielder earn a disappointing SofaScore match rating of just 6.3, by far and away ranking him as Tottenham’s worst player on the day.

As such, with Spurs facing what is sure to be a challenging test against a team coming into today off the back of an impressive 3-2 win at West Ham United, Conte simply cannot afford to start Ndombele in the middle of the park, as a repeat of his performance against Palace could well cost Tottenham dearly.

Indeed, when taking into account that the club’s £63m record signing has averaged a SofaScore match rating of just 6.58 over his nine Premier League outings this season – ranking him as Spurs’ sixth-worst performer in the league – it is clear to see why Graham Roberts stated his belief that Ndombele is turning into something of a “joke” in north London.

No domingo, o time carioca recebe o Corinthians na Ilha do Urubu.
