Injuries to Sehwag, Zaheer not serious – team managements

A day before India select the squad for the first Test against England, they received two minor injury scares in Ranji Trophy matches

A day before India select the squad for the first Test against England, they received two minor injury scares in Ranji Trophy matches.Virender Sehwag stayed off the field and batted at No. 6 because of a cut on his right index finger, but when he did bat he provided good support to Mithun Manhas in an unbeaten stand for 61 minutes against Uttar Pradesh. Zaheer Khan pulled up sore during his 21st over against Railways in Mumbai, pointed towards his groin, and walked off after a brief chat with two of his team-mates. Both players have 11 days to recover as the first starts on November 15 in Ahmedabad. Both the players’ respective team managements have said that the injuries are nothing to lose sleep over. Vijay Dahiya, Delhi’s coach, told ESPNcricinfo that Sehwag’s X-ray, done on Saturday, revealed no break. Sehwag, he said, had received “one or two stitches on the cut this morning” and had batted at No. 6 as a precautionary measure. “We wanted to give it as much of a rest as possible in the day” But as Delhi began to run out of specialist batsmen, trying to save a match against Uttar Pradesh, Sehwag put on his gloves and walked out. With Manhas, Sehwag added 51 for the fifth wicket. He remained unbeaten on 21 off 44 balls, and is expected to bat on the fourth morning.Mumbai’s captain, Ajit Agarkar, told reporters at the end of the day that Zaheer’s problem was just a cramp. “He should be okay, he should be on the field tomorrow morning,” Agarkar said. “He was just cramping badly. It suddenly got a little humid, the last couple of days, probably dehydrated a little bit.”However, when the incident occurred, Zaheer was just coming back from a five-over period spent off the field. “Sometimes you want to hold back a little bit instead of doing any damage,” Agarkar said. So did he stay back after tea because of the cramp? “Obviously, yes,” said Agarkar.Zaheer, who had had a catch dropped off his bowling on the second day, now has figures of 20.5-5-41-1. Agarkar qualified Zaheer’s effort as impressive and just the workout that he needed. The news, when it trickled in, caused plenty of concern among Indian cricket followers because both Sehwag and Zaheer have been a long history of injuries. They both missed large parts of the series when India were whitewashed 4-0 in England last year.

Peters ton sets Northants tone

Stephen Peters added another century to keep alive Northamptonshire’s slim hopes of clinching promotion to Division One

A week after registering his first century of a season that has seen him short of runs, Stephen Peters added another to keep alive Northamptonshire’s slim hopes of clinching promotion to Division One.Time is running out and Derbyshire, the leaders, look out of reach but a victory in this match combined with a couple more in the final quarter of the season might yet put them in contention for second place. After the psychological damage left by last season, when they appeared to have the prize in their grasp only to let a big lead evaporate, they should need little motivation. There is a new man providing it now – or rather newish. David Ripley, who joined the club as a player in 1984 and has never left, has been on the coaching staff for more than a decade, took charge of the first team temporarily last month after the sacking of David Capel, another long servant, and was told the job was his permanently earlier this week. There had been suggestions that a fresh voice might be needed to bring renewed vigour to the dressing room but the move has been a popular one among the players. Oddly enough, Peters offered his personal support for the appointment on the eve of this match. If form reflects contentment, then this innings was a further endorsement. He rarely put a foot wrong, sharing an opening stand of 126 with Niall O’Brien, who was back in the side after his latest tour of duty with Ireland, and one of 139 with Andrew Hall that re-established Northamptonshire’s grip after an afternoon session in which Leicestershire had mounted a fightback. Now 33, Peters has become a solidly dependable opening batsman, blessed with superlative powers of concentration. Yet in full flow he is an attractive strokemaker who can easily switch to attacking mode. His unbeaten 137 would have looked better still, though, had Hall not been out to what became the last ball of the day, driving loosely at a ball from Nathan Buck that provided a catch for wicketkeeper Ned Eckersley. Nonetheless, with a third batting point in the bank and some capable batting to come, Ripley will feel it has been a satisfactory opening day.Leicestershire are bottom of the table, which has become a sadly familiar position for them. However, they are not so far behind that what remains of the season is meaningless. Indeed, the gap between themselves and Northamptonshire at the start of this match was only 20 points.Yet for the most part they were disappointing. Josh Cobb, taking charge of his second Championship game after Matthew Hoggard left himself out in favour of Robbie Joseph, chose to bowl first on a grassy wicket on winning the toss but was probably regretting the decision fairly quickly.None of his bowlers seemed capable of finding anything in it to help their cause and the Northamptonshire openers made the most of a rare opportunity to bat in sustained warm sunshine, finishing the morning session 95 to the good. The afternoon was much more productive for Leicestershire, albeit within the space of 11 overs. The seamers bowled what you might refer to politely as a mixed bag. There were a few too many easy boundaries, and a bit too much work for Eckersley to do on the leg side of the wicket, yet from time to time there would be a ball that flew past the edge or had the batsman in two minds. Wickets went begging a couple of times for want of an extra slip fielder.Wayne White, in particular, offered a threat. He has some pace and hostility in his armoury and took two wickets in two balls towards the end of his second spell, breaking the opening partnership when O’Brien, a little flat-footed, edged a drive. The Irishman had looked impressive in reaching 70. Two balls later, David Sales, struggling for runs, edged low to first slip. He did not walk immediately, but after a consultation between the umpires had to accept that the ball had been taken cleanly. When Shiv Thakor, the 18-year-old allrounder for whom Leicestershire have great hopes, then removed Alex Wakely and Rob Newton within the space of four deliveries, across two overs, Northamptonshire were 161 for 4.White’s third spell deserved more success but Hall and Peters steadily reasserted themselves. Peters reached his century by cutting Claude Henderson, the left-arm spinner, for his 12th boundary and followed it immediately with another. He had increased his tally to 16 by the close.Whatever else happens in Northamptonshire’s season, it will not involve Chaminda Vaas. The 38-year-old former Sri Lanka fast bowler, who was the county’s player of the year in 2011, has been released from what remains of his contract after a season dogged by injury problems.

Michael Hogan, the Western Australia fast bowler, will quit Australian cricket after one more season in order to take up a contract with Glamorgan which had been due to start later this year.Hogan, 30, was due to link up with Glamorgan for the last two months of the 2012 English season but will now see out his Warriors contract before switching. Hogan holds a British passport so will not be classed as an overseas player, but regulations mean he has to stop playing Australian domestic cricket.”He has recently announced that he will retire from playing cricket in Australia at the end of March 2013,” a Glamorgan statement said. “He will then join up with his new team-mates ahead of the start of the new season and will play for Glamorgan for a minimum of two seasons.”Hogan has played 27 first-class matches and taken 100 wickets at 28.46 with a best of 6 for 70.

Pietersen knock entices England

Kevin Pietersen, with a double-century of the highest class for Surrey at Guildford, did not so much nudge the England selectors as grab them by the throat and roar ‘pick me’ in their faces.

Kevin Pietersen, with a double-century of the highest class, did not so much nudge the England selectors as grab them by the throat and roar ‘pick me’ in their faces. The selectors meet this weekend to pick the 30-man preliminary England squad for September’s World T20. This squad must be submitted to the ICC on July 18 and, while Pietersen had previously announced his retirement from limited-overs international cricket, all the evidence of recent days suggest he is having second thoughtsWhile Pietersen and Co. may hope to persuade the ECB to rethink their policy of insisting that players must be available for both forms of limited-overs cricket to be considered for either, there seems little chance of that happening. Andy Flower refused to back down when confronted by Robert Mugabe; he is most unlikely to back down now.It is hard to see a middle course, a course where Pietersen is rested for more ODIs than his colleagues, but perhaps it may be found. His Test career and his IPL future seemingly remain assured. There may be other doubts. There may be doubts over whether his teammates want him back; whether his request for a somewhat easier schedule should be heeded and whether it is fair for the likes of Alex Hales, Ravi Bopara and Ian Bell – the men who have flourished in his place – to potentially make way for his return. There may be doubts, too, over whether England need such a distraction just as they begin an important Test series against South Africa. But there should be no doubting Pietersen’s class. He was, after all, man of the tournament when England won the World T20 in 2010 and, since returning to form in the ODI series against Pakistan, has produced some of the finest performances of his life. This, by any standards, was an extraordinary innings. It was not just that Pietersen hit the fastest first-class century of the season – 93 balls with 13 fours and three sixes – or that he went on to hit the fastest double-century of the season – 170 balls, 25 fours and seven sixes – but that he bullied the bowling – the bowling of the county champions, no less – with a dominance rarely witnessed in the professional game. It was an innings that would have made Sri Viv Richards proud. And there really isn’t higher praise than that.Indeed, in years to come, those lucky enough to have been at Guildford for the third day of this game may reflect that they were blessed to witness greatness in action. Pietersen, in compiling the seventh double-century of his first-class career, a chanceless affair, provided a medley of his greatest hits: the ferocious cut shot; the impudent scoop; the outrageous switch-hit; the murderous pull; the dismissive slog-sweep and the gentle sweep; the magical flick through mid-wicket and, most of all, the thundering drive over the bowlers’ heads that brought majority of his sixes. And, it was interspersed throughout with quick singles and deft touches that spoke volumes for his fitness and his hunger for runs. Some of us are fortunate to watch many fine innings and many worthy centuries. This one, for its range of stroke and its complete mastery over decent opposition, stood out. It really does not get any better.Poor Simon Kerrigan bore the brunt of Pietersen’s assault. Kerrigan, a left-arm spinner of unusual skill and promise, was the victim of seven of Pietersen’s eight sixes and conceded 152 in his 23 overs. Only late in the day did Kerrigan allow the assault to affect him. For the most part he bowled well, but was unfortunate enough to come up against a great batsmen in murderous mood. Even Pietersen admitted that this innings was “right up there” among his best”Simon has bowled at a very good international cricketer on a tough pitch with short boundaries,” Lancashire coach Peter Moores said. “It won’t be the first time KP’s attacked a spinner. Simon’s had his days. He got his nine-for against Hampshire, but you’ve got to take both sides as a cricketer.”Some perspective is probably required. The pitch was flat, the bowling decent, though far from exceptional and the outfield is both short and fast. But Surrey were actually under some pressure when Pietersen walked to the crease and, bearing in mind the traumatic events of recent weeks, this was an important innings. Bearing in mind he remains unbeaten, Pietersen may even be able to build a match-winning lead on the final day.”It’s been a very traumatic time for the management and everyone at the club,” Pietersen said afterwards as he reflected on the death of Tom Maynard. “Today was a day that the boys needed. I said that I wanted to come back and put smiles on the guys’ faces. The boys have gelled real tight in the dressing room, some of them will be lifelong friends after all the stuff that they’ve been through and this was just a good day for Surrey.”It was, oddly enough, only Pietersen’s second championship century since his Test debut in 2005. He has made 20 Test centuries in that time, but his last in the championship came on May 7, 2008 at Taunton. It is his 43rd first-class century, but his first for Surrey.Pietersen’s brilliance utterly overshadowed several other worthy performances on an enjoyable day’s cricket. Not only did Zander de Bruyn make a splendid 94 in helping Pietersen add 181 in 35 overs, but Steven Croft extended his overnight total to the highest score of career in the morning session. Croft added 50 in 35 balls with six fours and a six as Lancashire scored 60 in 37 minutes to set up their declaration. It left Surrey requiring 336 just to avoid the follow-on. And, after Rory Burns, having fielded for two-and-half days, was bowled first ball, leaving one that turned out to be very straight, that looked some way distant. But, on a wonderful day of almost 500 runs, everything else seemed trivial compared to the excellence of Pietersen.

Apesar do resultado negativo, o goleiro destacou a atuação do Botafogo, principalmente no segundo tempo.

É trabalhar durante a semana e pensar no América – afirmou.
