Botha gets go-ahead for Big Bash

Johan Botha has been released to play for Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash League, and been asked to return to South Africa in time for the ODI series against Sri Lanka

Offspinner Johan Botha has received official notice that he is not part of South Africa’s plans for the Test series against Sri Lanka. He has been released for two and a half weeks to play for Adelaide Strikers in Australia’s Big Bash League, and been asked to return to South Africa in time for the ODI series against Sri Lanka, which starts on January 11.”Right now, we would not need his services in Test cricket,” Andrew Hudson, the national convenor of selectors, told ESPNcricinfo. “I wouldn’t rule him out totally, but we are comfortable to release him for this period. I’d say that if we need him, something drastic would have to happen to the other guys.”South Africa’s first-choice Test spinner is Pakistan-born Imran Tahir, who made his debut against Australia in November. Left-arm spinner Paul Harris is the official back-up, having been included in the squad against Australia, although he did not play a match. Harris was left out of the squad for the first Test against Sri Lanka, but is part of the SA Invitation XI that is playing a warm-up match against the visitors. Botha played five Tests for South Africa but is behind in the spin queue, which prompted his decision to take part in the BBL.”Gary [Kirsten] was involved in the decision and spoke to Johan about what his role is in the ODI and T20 formats, and where he is in terms of Test cricket in South Africa,” Hudson said. “We are happy for him to learn and develop his skills elsewhere.”The Warriors franchise, to which Botha is contracted, also had to agree to his release, which they did. Botha will miss three of the franchise’s first-class fixtures while he is in Australia, a loss to the team, which is struggling at the bottom of the SuperSport Series table.Questions were raised about the decision Botha made to leave a domestic competition at home to play a lucrative event in a foreign country. “It is a little bit concerning because it opens the door for other players to do the same,” Tony Irish, chief executive of the South African Cricketers’ Association, said. “As long as these decisions are taken with cricketing facts in mind, for example, Herschelle Gibbs is also playing over there, although he is not really in the international frame anymore.”Hudson agreed that the era of the T20 professional could pose problems for less glamorous domestic competitions and even national teams. “What CSA will have to do is understand what this concept of ‘a free agent’ means,” he said. “Some players who don’t play in all the formats might request that they are not bound by certain clauses of a national contract. There needs to be some way forward and it brings into the spotlight the structure of a national contract, which may have to have different terms in future.”

Sri Lanka Women booked their place in the Women’s World Cup after comprehensively beating hosts Bangladesh Women in Mirpur. After restricting Bangladesh to an exact 100, Sri Lanka made light work of the target, reaching home within 27 overs. Shashikala Siriwardene had a hand with both bat and ball, taking 2 for 23 and scoring an unbeaten 22 to guide her side home. Sri Lanka’s Udeshika Prabhodani struck early after Bangladesh opted to bat, reducing them to 13 for 3. Salma Khatun resisted with 32 but she didn’t get enough support as Bangladesh were restricted by tight bowling and fielding. Bangladesh exerted pressure when they took the field but Inoka Galagedara and Sandamali Dolawatte ensured Sri Lanka didn’t stutter towards their target.”We knew today that if our bowlers restricted the side to below 200 we would do well and the best score Bangladesh have against us in 190 which was in Sri Lanka,” Dilani Manodara, Sri Lanka’s captain, said. “I do think they are a much improved side but today was our day in the field. It was disappointing that we lost wickets again early on but this can only be improved upon. We knew that it was a slow wicket and coming out second to bat it would only get slower and would take turn, but we finished the job and secured our win and a place at the World Cup.”Bangladesh meanwhile will head to the play-offs for ODI status. “Today our batting didn’t perform and we should have made more runs but once again the Sri Lankans were very tight in the field against us,” Khatun, the captain, said. “We should have batted better out there today, their bowling was good but runs were there to be scored and we didn’t make them. The biggest difference I have found playing against the stronger sides in this tournament has been the fact that they have played a lot more cricket than we have, some of the sides here have had well established women cricket for over 20 years, whereas we have only been playing regularly for about five years.”Pakistan Women too sealed their berth in the World Cup with a massive 193-run win against Netherlands Women in Fatullah. Fiftes by Nida Dar, Bismah Maroof and Javeria Khan took the score to an imposing 277 for 4. Maroof and Dar were amongst the wickets as well, taking three wickets apiece to send the opposition crashing to 84. Their captain Sana Mir missed out on a fifty, falling just one short, but her knock set the platform for the middle order to build on. Javeria top scored with 67 while Maroof wasn’t too far behind, at 66.Only two Netherlands players managed to go past double figures. The batsmen were rocked by the spinners and were no match for the Pakistan attack.”Today’s performance was great, we wanted to make at least 250 and we did that, with three of the team making half-centuries too,” Mir said. “There was some good bowling which was really tight, the only thing I would like to improve upon ahead of our match against South Africa is the amount of extras that we bowled.””After we won gold at the Asian Games recently, women’s cricket has really taken off in the media in Pakistan and increased in popularity.”It was a much closer affair at Savar, as Japan Women sneaked home by six runs against Zimbabwe Women. Ema Kuribayashi played a captain’s knock of 47 but lacked support from the rest as Japan were bowled out for 152. They had Extras to thank – 25 of those runs came off wides. Kuribayashi played her part in the field as well, taking a wicket, two catches and effecting a run-out. Japan’s fielding was impressive and that played an important part in restricting Zimbabwe. Modester Mupachikwa was the top scorer with 32. Japan too were generous with extras – they conceded 30 wides. However, it didn’t hurt them in the end as Zimbabwe ran out of overs and lost despite having two wickets in hand.

Confira:

England retain Ashes on rainy day

England will keep the Ashes for the next five months at least after Manchester’s weather proved a far more impassable barrier to Australia’s bowlers than the hosts’ top order batting on a grey final day at Old Trafford

England will keep the Ashes for the next five months at least after Manchester’s weather proved a far more impassable barrier to Australia’s bowlers than the hosts’ top order batting on a grey final day at Old Trafford. The retention of the urn arrived formally via the underwhelming circumstances of an announcement that play had been abandoned at 4.39pm local time, due to a solid belt of rain that could delay its arrival no further than three balls into the afternoon session.By that time England had lurched to 37 for 3, Ian Bell stung on the thumb by a prancing delivery from Peter Siddle that rather summed up the danger posed by a committed and skilful Australian attack, who have grown increasingly confident in their ability to snip the top off their opponents’ batting. Confounded by the rain in Manchester, they will look back ruefully on the failure of Australia’s batsmen to provide them with anything to bowl to at Trent Bridge and Lord’s, where England established their decisive advantage. This is not to say that Old Trafford will be a source of entirely happy memories for Alastair Cook’s men nor completely forlorn ones for Michael Clarke’s. Australia have broken a streak of six consecutive Test match defeats, and in the final two Investec Tests have the chance to press for parity in this series and a platform from which to regain superiority at home in the southern summer. England by comparison have appeared to lose steam, their bowlers decreasing in threat while the batsmen grow increasingly dependent on the middle and lower orders to bail them out.A Test match at Durham in four days’ time will provide plenty of questions for both sides, not least whether the admirable Ryan Harris will be able to back up without the benefit of the break he had between Lord’s and Old Trafford. Harris and Siddle were the outstanding performers in the 20.3 overs of play that were possible, finding life in the air and off the pitch to dispose of Cook, Jonathan Trott and Kevin Pietersen before the showers set in.It might have been even worse for England, had Clarke held onto the sort of slips chance he would usually claim when Joe Root snicked Siddle. Pietersen looked distraught to be given out, though a noise at precisely the moment the ball passed the bat backed up Tony Hill’s call and that of the third umpire Kumar Dharmasena.Rain overnight and this morning left many pessimistic about the chances of any resumption at all, with England needing only a draw. However the skies cleared enough for a concerted cleaning and drying effort from the ground staff, starting at around 10am, and following an inspection at 10.45 Hill and Marais Erasmus informed the captains Clarke and Cook of their plans to resume.Clarke immediately declared, and threw the ball to Harris when play began at 11.30. As he has done repeatedly when called on, Harris responded with a spell of heart and skill, picking up the two early wickets that his captain required. Cook was drawn across his crease by balls angled towards the slips and then pinned lbw by an inswinger. He referred even though the ball was curling in to hit middle stump, the loss of a review adding to the gravity of the blow.Trott has looked out of sorts in this match, and Harris worked him over in similar fashion, moving outswingers away then arrowing the odd ball back in. Harris’ first attempt at the plan resulted in an awfully close lbw shout declined by Hill. Australia’s referral was lost as the ball was hitting less than half of leg stump, but in Harris’ next over Trott again fell across his crease, this time glancing straight into Brad Haddin’s gloves.Pietersen announced his arrival with a pull shot that signalled Harris’ withdrawal. In Siddle’s first over replacing him, Root was squared up by a ball angled in and seaming away, but Clarke surprised everyone in attendance by dropping the chance. Australian heads were not to be bowed for long however, as Siddle appeared to extract a fine edge from Pietersen as he prodded forward.Hill’s finger was raised, an upset Pietersen referred, and Dharmasena upheld the on-field call after a sound could be heard at the moment ball passed bat. Pietersen walked off muttering, and minutes later Australia followed him with a spring in their step. They returned with hope as the afternoon began, but within three balls were shuffling back to the pavilion, where a few hours later England had cause for celebration, acknowledging the commitment of a small, soggy crowd from the Old Trafford balcony.

Board promises BPL player payments before Eid

The BCB has vowed to pay local players their dues from the 2013 Bangladesh Premier League before the Eid-ul-Fitr holidays

Mohammad Isam29-Jul-2013Other decisions at the BCB ad-hoc committee’s meeting

Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League will now begin on September 3, and the players’ recruitment will take place on August 25. It is the fifth such date given by the BCB.

Umpire Nadir Shah’s mercy plea will only be considered after a year of his 10-year suspension is completed.

BCB will seek councillors’ names from all districts and clubs on August 12, and give them 10 days to select the councillors (who will vote to elect BCB directors). In the meantime, they will ask the National Sports Council to set up an election commission and begin the process to elect a BCB president.

Quick bowler Abul Hasan will be sent abroad to seek treatment for his back injury, pending a medical committee’s recommendation.

The BCB has vowed to pay local players their dues from the 2013 Bangladesh Premier League before the Eid-ul-Fitr holidays. The decision was taken at a BCB ad-hoc committee meeting as several franchises have not yet completed payments to the players or the board, after the board conditionally terminated the contracts of some franchises. The BPL’s schedule for the next season is still unclear, and it may even be held before the end of the year if a slot is available in the domestic calendar.”Many of the domestic and foreign players are still unpaid, because the franchises didn’t make payments after the first 25% was cleared,” BCB media committee chairman Jalal Yunus said. “The board has decided to pay 45-50% to the domestic players before Eid-ul-Fitr. According to the tripartite agreement, the board has to pay the players if the franchises fail to make payments.”Before BPL’s second season began, it was announced that player payments would be completed in three instalments. It has now changed to four instalments: the first being before the tournament started, the second during the tournament, the third within three months after the tournament and the last of which is on August 19, six months after the 2013 edition ended. The BCB’s role as guarantor has meant that it has to make payments when the franchises default, according to the three-way agreement between the BCB, players and the franchises. The players who have been paid 25% will receive a further 25%, while those who have already been paid 50%, will have to wait for the rest of the money. Those present in the press conference however could not clarify when the next stage of payment after the Eid one will be. “We will settle what we owe, and look into the future when the time comes,” Mahbubul Anam, another member of the BCB ad-hoc committee said. “We have to clear the due first, and the last payment is at the end of August.”The board is also hopeful that it can have a window for BPL-3 as early as December if the 2012-13 Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League is completed by October. Their hope lies in the promise made by the Dhaka Premier League clubs who have apparently assured BCB chief Nazmul Hassan that they will play the league from September and continue to do so in October without the national players.”Since the Dhaka Premier League clubs have said they are willing to play without the national players, we can hold the league in October too,” Yunus said. “In that case we can hold the BPL after the two first-class tournaments – the National Cricket League and Bangladesh Cricket League.”
