The hosts are 13 points clear at the top of the Championship standings. They just require nine points from as many matches to secure a return to the top flight but Vincent Kompany must be careful to not allow any form of complacency to creep into his side.

Meanwhile, Sunderland are in the 11th spot with 53 points from 38 matches. They are seven points adrift of a playoff spot and must pull up their socks at the business end of the campaign to squeeze into the top six. Since a draw to Bristol City at home in February they have struggled to trouble their opponents, picking up just five points from seven matches.

Victorious Windies offered place at WICB table

West Indies’ breakaway Twenty20 players may have finally won themselves the place they have been seeking at the WICB negotiating table

Nagraj Gollapudi04-Apr-2016By claiming their second World Twenty20 title in dramatic circumstances, West Indies’ breakaway T20 players may have finally won themselves the place they have been seeking at the WICB negotiating table.Reacting to the strong criticism thrown at him and his board, the WICB president Dave Cameron announced that he would meet the players after the IPL at the annual review in June to find a “common ground” where the “best” players can represent the region in all formats.Cameron was reacting strongly to the critical remarks made by West Indies captain Darren Sammy immediately after becoming the first team to be crowned World T20 champions twice. In his acceptance speech Sammy said it was “very disappointing” to not hear from the WICB on the team’s triumph against England on Sunday evening in Kolkata. While expressing his disappointment at Sammy’s “inappropriate” comments, Cameron delivered his most conciliatory message to the players for some time. Previously, he has refused to speak with the group, insisting they must deal with the players association WIPA, whose president Wavell Hinds fell out with them when he agreed to a vastly inferior pay deal in 2014, leading to the disastrous walkout from that year’s ODI tour of India. Cameron has now changed his tune.”Coming up in May this year, the Board will host its annual review (retreat) with the players, WIPA, selectors and the technical team to review player, management and technical plans. We want to see how we can find common ground in ensuring that the best players in the region are available for selection for West Indies teams,” Cameron said in a statement delivered hours after Sammy and his men stunned England in a dazzling last-over finish.According to Cameron, the reason the meeting with the players, which would also involve selectors, team management and the West Indies Players Association (WIPA), was planned in June was because many of the senior Caribbean players like Chris Gayle, Dwayne Bravo, Kieron Pollard and Carlos Braithwaite would be busy with the IPL which will be played between April 9 and May 29.The board and selectors have omitted big names like Bravo, Sammy, Pollard from the ODI squads ever since West Indies abandoned the India tour. Bravo and Pollard were not considered for last year’s World Cup by the Clive Lloyd-led selection panel and have not played any ODI since October 2014. This January, when the WICB announced annual retainer contracts for 15 players, it said that the short list was arrived at by keeping only the Test players in mind. One of the major stumbling blocks for the players is WICB’s insistence that they play in the regional tournaments consistently in order to be eligible for the international engagements in all three formats. The WICB has said that the players who travel around the world playing in the T20 franchise-based tournaments, cannot expect to be picked solely on their experience and stature.Although Cameron has extended an olive branch, he highlighted that the WICB approach is hardly going to change going forward. “We are fully aware of the financial rewards on offer in the lucrative international T20 leagues, but we believe deeply in the importance of cricket to the people of the region and of West Indies cricket’s place in world cricket. It is therefore a priority to have all of our players competing and available for selection. We will also engage the ICC on this so that we protect not only the rich heritage and legacy of West Indies Cricket, but also its future. “Incidentally, the WICB release was titled ‘WICB President has high praises for World Twenty20 Organisers’. The only word of praise for Sammy and co came indirectly when Cameron described the WICB was “overjoyed” by the fact that two West Indies teams – women and men – had won the WT20 titles. But Cameron did not waste the opportunity to remind the players who was still in charge. Cameron “pledged” to address the issue of Sammy’s outspokenness and take any necessary action.”The President would like to however apologise for what could be deemed inappropriate, comments made by the West Indies’ male captain, Darren Sammy in a post-match interview and would like to apologize on behalf of the WICB, to the millions of fans who witnessed,” the statement said. “The President has pledged to enquire the reason and will have the matter addressed.”In an earlier media release the WICB had sent a thank you note to all the three teams – men, women and Under-19 – for emerging as the champions this year. “The men, women and Under-19 teams within the last three months have made the West Indies a region worthy of tremendous attention by being the best at the international level in World Cricket. We are indeed a proud set of people today and we want to thank ALL OF YOU for your tremendous support,” the release, titled ‘From the desks of the CEO (Micheal Muirhead) and President (Cameron)’, said.”The men’s team has been electric and exciting in their performances during the tournament and we are all PROUD. This is a defining moment for Cricket and we ought to thank each and every one of our Directors, Management, Staff and supporters for the support West Indies Cricket has received. This is a truly ecstatic moment and we are indeed proud of this momentous achievement.”The T20 format is a springboard to the other formats and we will use this as an opportunity to continue the development work we have to do to make the overall cricket product better. The men executed their comprehensive plan and we are pleased with the results. We salute the entire delegation on the hard work and commitment showed. We congratulate the team and management.”For the full coverage of the West Indies payment dispute, click HERE.

Hopes counterattack lifts Queensland to lead

James Hopes, coming in at No.8, blasted 94 off 60 balls, guiding Queensland to an innings lead against Tasmania in Brisbane

Tasmania, who began the day at 9 for 269, lasted just five overs in the morning, as Mitchell Swepson quickly bowled the last batsman Sam Rainbird.Queensland, though, began their reply poorly, as the opener Matt Renshaw was run out in the sixth over. The team was dealt another blow when Charlie Hemphrey was trapped lbw, but Marnus Labuschagne and Chris Lynn led a recovery, putting up 71 runs for the third wicket. Both batsmen eventually fell in the space of four overs, but Sam Heazlett kept the runs flowing, his 56 taking the team over the 200-run mark.Tasmania might have had one eye on an innings lead when Hamish Kingston dismissed Heazlett to leave Queensland six down and still 91 runs away from parity, but Hopes quickly helped his team regain the advantage by smashing 16 fours during his blast, and stringing together 128 runs for the seventh wicket with the captain Chris Hartley. Hopes scored at a strike-rate of 156.66, and though he fell just short of what would have been a sixth first-class ton, his blitz gave Queensland a lead of 43. Hartley was unbeaten on 47 when stumps were called.

Footitt frustrated as Ingram recovers Glamorgan

Derbyshire’s England fast bowling hopeful Mark Footitt endured a frustrating day in front of National Selector James Whitaker as South African batsman Colin Ingram led a Glamorgan recovery at Chesterfield

ScorecardColin Ingram made a steady half-century after the rain•Getty ImagesDerbyshire’s England fast bowling hopeful Mark Footitt endured a frustrating day in front of National Selector James Whitaker as South African batsman Colin Ingram led a Glamorgan recovery at Chesterfield.Whitaker would have been impressed by the ball that removed Ben Wright for a duck but Footitt lacked the consistency that earned him a place on England’s recent pre-Ashes camp in Spain and ended with figures of 1 for 65 from 11 overs which included eight no balls. With Ingram counterattacking to score an unbeaten 73 with 16 fours , Glamorgan closed an opening day in which 64 overs were lost to rain and bad light on 167 for 3 with their hopes of winning five consecutive championship games for the first time still very much alive.Footitt had destroyed Glamorgan’s batting at Derby last season and the visitors must have feared the worst when Wayne Madsen won the toss and gave his attack first use of a green pitch on an overcast morning. The conditions looked ideal for bowling and Glamorgan were soon in trouble as Tony Palladino and Footitt reduced them to 10 for 2 in the third over. Jacques Rudolph played defensively at the ninth ball of the day only to see it spin back into his stumps and Whitaker’s journey to Queen’s Park was rewarded when Footitt had Wright caught behind off a rising ball.It was his 40th championship wicket of the season and his 165th victim in an unbroken run of 40 first-class matches since early May 2013 but his chances of adding to that were ended by the first of four stoppages which allowed only nine overs to be bowled until the light improved late in the afternoon. When play did finally resume, Bragg and Ingram took the total to 73 before Bragg lost his off stump to a ball from Taylor that nipped back but also kept low and Mark Wallace was forced to retire hurt when he was struck on the left hand in the seamer’s next over. But Ingram was playing with growing authority and when Footitt switched to the Pond End for one over, he cut him for successive fours before driving Shiv Thakor down the ground for another boundary.Footitt reverted to the Pavilion End and was driven past mid-on by Ingram for his 12th four which took him to a 64 ball 50 which was an impressive effort in the conditions. With Craig Meschede also profiting from some loose bowling, Ingram was able to look back on a good day for the Welsh county. “It was a tough one going on and off but I was really excited with the way the guys played positively. We did well to put runs on the board today and if we can come out tomorrow and bat well, we can seize the opportunity because if you bowl a good line and length, there’s enough for the bowlers.”Madsen admitted he was disappointed with the way his team ended the day. “We got off to really good start this morning but it was a very poor last session when he bowled too many boundary balls. I know it’s a quick scoring ground but we were poor in our execution and gave them too many boundaries.”

Euro U-17 stars today, African superstars tomorrow?

Which of the wonderkids featuring in Israel could become big names for African national sides?

Getty ImagesEl Chadaille Bitshiabu

The towering centre-back will be the rock at the heart of the France backline during the U-17 Euros, where he’ll be keen to bring his outstanding form from Paris Saint-Germain’s Youth League campaign to bear in Israel.

He’s already featured for Mauricio Pochettino’s side at senior level, although with his route to more playing time with PSG’s first team arguably blocked, the likes of Bayern Munich, ManchesterCity and RB Leipzig are all understood to be monitoring his services.

With experience already of having played with Portugal’s U-19 team, Essugo has the potential to dominate contests at the U-17 Euro.

He’s already become Sporting Lisbon’s youngest ever player—a remarkable achievement at such an institution—and the youngster, who’s also eligible for Angola, should impress with his defensive qualities and work with the ball.

Son of French footballing royalty, Zinedine’s son Elyaz certainly has some high standards to live up to, although having progressed through the ranks at Real Madrid, he’s well used to demanding environments.

Eligible for both Algeria and Spain, Zidane jr is turning out for France at the U-17 Euros, and while he’s the youngest of Zidane’s four boys, he may turn out to be the most exciting.

Antoni Milambo

Feyenoord’s youngest ever first team player, Milambo made his debut for the Dutch giants only four months and nine days after his 16th birthday—testament to his maturity and his raw ability.

Eligible for the Democratic Republic of Congo, but featuring for the Netherlands at the U-17 showpiece, Milambo has the quality to hurt teams between the lines, and there won’t be too many players at the tournament who already have experience of playing in senior level continental club competitions.

Want to brush off India loss – Amla

Hashim Amla has urged South Africa not to overreact after their defeat to India on Sunday and pinned their uncharacteristic blow-out at the MCG on “a few mistakes” from which they could “move on” fast.

Firdose Moonda in Sydney25-Feb-2015Hashim Amla has urged South Africa not to overreact after their defeat to India on Sunday and pinned their uncharacteristic blow-out at the MCG on “a few mistakes” from which they could “move on” fast.”Everybody in the team has played enough to know that you do win and lose games. There can only be one winner and one loser. So, let’s not get too dramatic about it,” Amla said in Sydney, where South Africa are preparing to face West Indies. “We didn’t play good cricket, but we take the knock on the chin. We know we have a few more games in the round-robin phase, and guys have been playing well. So we don’t want to dwell too much on it. But going into the next game we certainly know we’ve got to perform better.”South Africa’s 130-run loss on Sunday was their worst at a World Cup, while batting second, but it is not likely to have a significant impact on whether they qualify for the knockout stages. At worst, it could impact where they finish in the group and who they face in the quarter-finals, but for Amla that does not really matter.”You want to finish as high as possible but if you qualify for the quarter-final, so be it,” Amla said. “If you want to win a World Cup you’re going to need to play the best teams to win it. There’s no trying to avoid anybody.”Instead of focusing on opposition they will face only in three weeks’ time, South Africa are concentrating on the aspect of their game they need to improve now: top-order batting. It’s a concern South Africa seemed unlikely to have, especially with the likes of Amla and AB de Villiers in their ranks, and one they tried to brush off as nothing serious after the showing against Zimbabwe. In the aftermath of that game, where they thundered to 339 after being reduced to 83 for 4, de Villiers was right to defend his frontmen. He reminded critics that the top four were precisely the reason South Africa had won matches in the past and if the sometimes soft middle order had hardened up enough to make up for it when they didn’t, there was actually a lot to be pleased about. All that was reversed against India, when South Africa recovered from a stumbling start but were then shot out for under 200 and lost 7 for 44 along the way. Amla called it a one-off.”We didn’t manage to string enough big partnerships closely together and we lost wickets at key times. Things like that happen,” he said. “You don’t want it to happen, and fortunately over the last few years it hasn’t happened to us too often – getting bowled out for 150 or 160. We just want to brush it off, take the knock on our chin, and get our heads up for the next game.”That change will have to stem from the top, where the partnership between Amla and de Kock is yet to show what it is capable of. In 32 innings together, Amla and de Kock have scored 1551 runs at an average of 48.46; at the World Cup, they have managed just 10 and 12 with de Kock appearing out of touch and Amla fumbling instead of playing fluently. Both problems, Amla hopes, are temporary.”I’d love to score runs every game but I don’t think it’s possible. It’s been a slow start and hopefully it gets better. I’m feeling good. Everybody goes through a few games in which they don’t score runs,” he said. “Quinny is striking the ball really well. On any given day, he can kick into first, second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth gear. Although he hasn’t got many runs I don’t think anybody in the team is too concerned with him not getting enough batting time because he does hit a lot of balls in the nets and he does put a lot of care into his batting.’Since his comeback from an ankle ligament tear, which was expected to keep him out for up to three months and two games of the World Cup but healed in a month, de Kock has only had one score over 20 in seven innings. That came in a warm-up game against Sri Lanka in Christchurch, when he made 66, and Shaun Pollock believes de Kock could still be working through the lack of match time in his own mind.”Quinton would have loved to have a nice series against West Indies before coming to the World Cup. He is probably a bit short on match time. It’s more from a mental perspective because technically we know what he can do,” Pollock said. “It’s about trying to get into the rhythm.”Luckily for de Kock, and for South Africa, there is still some time to do that. “The round-robin phase does allow you, if you do have a hiccup like we did on Sunday, some time to get back and align everything in the right way,” Amla said. “But it’s still early in the competition.” So, as they say in Australia, for Amla there are “no big dramas at the moment.”
